Experimental design offers an elegant model of many problems where one navigates within a vast search space seeking data points with certain characteristics. A multitude of applications in science and engineering fall under this umbrella, with drug and materials discovery being prime examples. The experimental design approach maintains a probabilistic model of the search space, and uses Bayesian decision theory accounting for this model to guide the accumulation of observed data to maximize an experimentation objective of interest. In this thesis we develop tools for carrying out computer assisted proof of the stability of traveling wave solutions of the spatially one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with an ideal gas equation of state. In particular, we obtain rigorous, tight error bounds on a high-accuracy numerical approximation of the traveling wave profile for parameters corresponding to air, and we obtain rigorous representations in a neighborhood of positive and negative infinity of the solution to the first order ODE associated with linearizing the PDE equations about the traveling wave solution. We also develop supporting tools for rigorous verification of wave stability.

Design And Implementation Of Truly Random Number Generation Using Memristors For In-Memory Computing, Nick Felker

This paper proposes a new security module based on non-volatile memory. The module uses a memristor-based true random number generator to generate random numbers which can be used for cryptography. The module is implemented in software using a modified RISC-V instruction set architecture. The paper evaluates the performance of the module using the RISC-V simulator Gem5. The results show that the module can generate random numbers at a rate of 63 microseconds per number, which is faster than the standard C library’s random number generator. It is now recognized that the energy released by accreting supermassive black holes observed as Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is integral in shaping the dynamics of baryons on up to cosmological scales, and AGN thus play a significant role in regulating the formation and evolution of galaxies. Studying the clustering properties of AGN reveals which environments they release this feedback energy into, testing models of AGN-galaxy coevolution and AGN structure. The southeastern United States is a critical biodiversity hotspot once covered in prairie grassland ecosystems and now facing significant threats due to urbanization, habitat destruction, over-exploitation, biological invasions, pollution, and climate change. This study analyzes the response of Alabama’s native prairie ecosystem to climate change. We used open top chambers (OTCs) to simulate climate change-induced warming. We assessed the response of ecosystem function and structure to higher temperatures (1-3oC). This dissertation comprises three essays that investigate the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in business.

Chapter 1 investigates the fundamental issue of how integrating AI within R&D activities influences a firm’s market value. We developed an "AI Index" using patent data and textual analysis. Interestingly, empirical results indicate a negative correlation between AI integration and market value. However, this does not suggest that AI is an unviable avenue for exploration. Further analysis of the boundary conditions reveals that complementary assets are crucial for successful commercialisation, highlighting that while AI adoption is costly, these assets significantly enhance its market value. …

Although LLMs have demonstrated promising as evaluators for certain text generation tasks, there is still a gap until they are used as reliable text evaluators for general purposes. The synthesis of two cobalt(II) complexes: the novel complex [Co(phen)₃]₂[Co(pytc)₂]•16.25H₂O 1 and the previously reported [Co(bpy)₃](OH)₂•7H₂O 2, along with a cobalt(II/III)-containing MOF, Co-PPF2, previously reported as well, was achieved. These complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray crystallography, microscopy, conductivity measurements, TGA, SEM, CV , and UV-visible , and FTIR spectroscopies. From the CV scan rates, diffusion coefficients for complexes 1 and 2 were determined to be 1.0 × 10−6 cm2 s−1 and 4.8 × 10−7 cm2 s−1. The f1(1285) meson is commonly understood to belong to the axial-vector nonet as the low-mass isoscalar partner to the f1(1420) but has been suggested as a candidate for a KK+c.c molecule. A nearly mass-degenerate 0 −+ state has been observed in πp scattering that calls into question the established branching ratios of the f1(1285) decays. Recently, the differential cross-section for the photoproduction of f1(1285) was measured by the CLAS experiment and the results disagreed with theoretical predictions. This dissertation is concerned with the Landau equation, an integro-differential equation that models the particle density of a plasma as it evolves in phase space. The main topic is the (large-data) local existence of classical solutions to the Landau equation in the case of hard potentials (γ ∈ (0, 1]). Solutions have previously been constructed by Chaturvedi [SIAM. J. Math. Anal., 55(5), 5345–5385, 2023] for initial data in an exponentially-weighted Sobolev space of order 10, but it is not a priori clear whether these solutions have more regularity than the initial data. Radiosondes are balloon borne atmospheric instruments that are a critical tool for understanding dynamics in the lower layers of the atmosphere. The low-cost radiosondes developed in the Space and Atmospheric Instrumentation Lab have been further developed to improve the system's use as a science-quality atmospheric instrument that is unique in its ability to simultaneously track multiple sondes with a single ground station. Scientific computing applications that simulate complex phenomena may require the solution to numerous multi-variate integrals. However, functions that have features such as sharp peaks or oscillations in high dimensional spaces, can result in an exorbitant number of computations. Historically, hydrogen sulfide was considered unimportant in the open ocean since it has primarily been associated with anoxic environments. Yet, in the late 1980s it was suggested that this sulfur gas is also being produced in the oxic, surface ocean through the hydrolysis of carbonyl sulfide (OCS). Since then, several studies have demonstrated that hydrogen sulfide is indeed found in oxic seawater at pico- to nanomolar concentrations due not only to carbonyl sulfide hydrolysis, but also assimilatory sulfate reduction by phytoplankton. A notable portion of these methods draws upon principles of cooperative game theory (CGT), with the Shapley value emerging as a widely used solution concept. This dissertation presents experimental results of coherent backscattering of light in an ultracold ensemble of rubidium atoms confined in a magneto optical trap under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a cascade-type system. Electromagnetically induced transparency was investigated experimentally in both a counterpropagating and orthogonal laser geometry and compared to theory. The experimental results were largely in good agreement with theory. Coherent backscattering was then measured with and without an EIT control field present to investigate the modification, if any, that EIT has on the enhancement of the coherent backscattering cone. This dissertation presents results of an experimental investigation of the time resolved fluorescence from a cold and dense ensemble of 87Rb atoms after the sample is illuminated by a short probe pulse. The goal of the experiment was to investigate cooperative subradiant behavior, characterized by a much longer decay time compared to the natural lifetime, induced in an off resonant probe regime. The aim of this dissertation is to outline important considerations for the Louisiana Sugarcane Variety Development Program (LSVDP) as it pertains to historical progress, impact, goal setting, and new strategies for continued genetic gains. Industry progress was evaluated with robust regression models to quantify rates of productivity gains. Over the last 50 years, statistically significant productivity gains were identified in sucrose content (45%), cane yield (32.2%), and sugar yield (93%) while pairwise comparisons of decades showed that progress was incremental rather than rapid and sustained once achieved.
