A Model For X-Ray Scattering From A Free-Volume Liquid, Charles A. Hewett Jan 1954

A Model For X-Ray Scattering From A Free-Volume Liquid, Charles A. Hewett

Masters Theses

"Investigation of the diffraction of x-rays by liquids was begun soon after the well-known work of Friedrich, Knipping, and Laue proved to be of value in supplying information as to the arrangement of atoms in crystalline matter. Friedrich in 1913 reported x-ray diffraction patterns of Canadian Balsam, paraffin, and amber; three years later Debye and Scherrer, in their work on benzene, (among other liquids investigated) showed that the diffraction phenomenon exhibited was one of interference. Still later, in 1922, Keesom and de Smedt reported similar investigations carried out on argon, nitrogen, and oxygen in the liquid state, the results of …

The Electrolytic Reduction Of Osmium Tetroxide In Perchloric Acid Solution, Donald Lloyd Brunner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This is a study involving some of the chemistry of osmium tetroxide in perchloric acid solution. The research was originally instigated from a seminar report on the ruthenium III thiocyanate complex ion which was studied in perchloric acid solution. The seminar report given by Craig Townsend discussed how a spectrophotometric study by Yaffe and Voight (1951) was made of the ruthenium III thiocyanate complex ion, Similar possibilities were recognized as being possible in attacking the problem of an osmium thiocyanate complex or complexed. Some of the chemistry involved in the study of the ruthenium III thiocyanate complex will be discussed …

A Study Of The Emission And Absorption Spectra Of Nacl And Kcl Between 100 A And 1000 A, Paul Henry Blackmon Jan 1954

A Study Of The Emission And Absorption Spectra Of Nacl And Kcl Between 100 A And 1000 A, Paul Henry Blackmon

Masters Theses

"This investigation was begun with the idea of obtaining the emission and absorption spectra of NaCl and KCl in the region between 100 A and 1000 A. From these data, it is hoped that useful information concerning the energy levels of these two substances may be obtained.

The vacuum ultraviolet region is rather difficult to investigate because of the necessity of removing all air, lenses and other absorbing material from the light path. Many writers have enumerated the problems involved and some have indicated that much work still needs to be done in the vacuum ultraviolet.

In order to do …

The Velocity Of Ultrasonics In Liquids, Mack A. Breazeale Jan 1954

The Velocity Of Ultrasonics In Liquids, Mack A. Breazeale

Masters Theses

"In acoustics the term ultrasonics is used to refer to those frequencies which are above the range of human hearing; that is, frequencies above approximately 20,000 cycles per second. Since the laws of sound which are valid for the audible range are also valid in the ultrasonic range and since the wave length of ultrasonics is much shorter than that of audible sound, ultrasonic has proved very valuable in the calculation of both the velocity and the absorption coefficient of sound in various media. This is especially notable in the case of liquids, where the velocity of sound is much …

The Mineralogy Of The Grassy Creek And Saverton Formations, Dirk Pieter Van Duym Jan 1954

The Mineralogy Of The Grassy Creek And Saverton Formations, Dirk Pieter Van Duym

Masters Theses

"A study of the mineralogy of the Grassy Creek and Saverton formations of Northeast Missouri was undertaken to determine whether a division is justified, as proposed by some stratigraphers, of these argillaceous beds into two formations. The formations were sampled systematically at surface exposures on the northeast limb of the Lincoln Arch in the vicinity of Hannibal and Louisiana, Missouri. The samples were investigated mineralogically in the laboratory. Previous studies showed that the fossils of the Grassy Creek and Saverton beds were virtually identical. The present study demonstrates that the Grassy Creek and Saverton beds are too near alike in …

Coloration Of Glass By High Energy Radiation, Thomas L. Nickens Jan 1954

Coloration Of Glass By High Energy Radiation, Thomas L. Nickens

Masters Theses

"Purpose of Investigation: One of the objects of this investigation is to determine the amount of CeO2 required to prevent the discoloration of glass when exposed to gamma radiation. By discoloration, it is meant that there has been a change in the absorption bands of visible light. Another objective is an attempt to prevent the coloration by the introduction of two oxides not previously used. Finally, a theory is presented which could explain why glass containing CeO2 does not change color upon irradiation by gamma rays"--Introduction, page 1.

Determination Of The Thermal Conductivity Of Sodium Chloride At Elevated Temperatures, Harold Robert Weisbrod Jan 1954

Determination Of The Thermal Conductivity Of Sodium Chloride At Elevated Temperatures, Harold Robert Weisbrod

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this research is to investigate possible methods of determining the thermal conductivity of small poorly conducting samples at elevated temperatures, and, further, to assemble a suitable apparatus, followed by measurement of thermal conductivity of one or more cubic lattice samples.

Basic requirements of the apparatus are few. It is first required that the measurement of thermal conductivity be made over a considerable range temperature. It is also preferred that the basic apparatus be placed in a vacuum where undesirable heat flow by convection is eliminated and air corrodible samples are preserved.

The apparatus must use only the …

A Colorimetric Coulometer, Clayton C. Roth Aug 1953

A Colorimetric Coulometer, Clayton C. Roth

Master's Theses

In the study of many electrochemical processes, such as, surface adsorption on electrodes, a simple, rapid, and relatively accurate coulometer that will measure .01 to 1.0 coulombs, would be extremely useful. This project was commenced to investigate the feasibility of an entirely different approach for coulometric analysis for application in this range.

This new type of coulometer utilizes a colorimeter for determining the amount of coulombs passed through coulometer cell. Consequently, any electrode process which of its own nature is color-producing, or a process which, in turn, can actuate a color indicator, is a potential reaction for this colorimetric couloumeter.

A Statistical Evaluation Of Various Determinations Of Germanium, Kenneth William Bartz Aug 1953

A Statistical Evaluation Of Various Determinations Of Germanium, Kenneth William Bartz

Bachelors’ Theses

Germanium first came to the author's attention under the heading of "A Study of the Excited States of Matter." The various and diverse, not to mention peculiar properties of this element aroused my interest. But upon further studying of this unusual element my concern switched from its properties to the methods of analysis. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss and correlate the numerous and varied analytical determinations. However, actual determinations are limited to instrumental procedures only.

For the evaluation and interpretation of the date, Statistical Analysis is used. The author's qualification in Statistical Analysis include a year …

Mechanism Of Adsorption Of Cations By Silicate Minerals, Milton Glen Armstrong Aug 1953

Mechanism Of Adsorption Of Cations By Silicate Minerals, Milton Glen Armstrong

Theses and Dissertations

Adsorption of cations by clays has been a subject of investigation for many years. Many proposals have been advanced to explain this process of adsorption. Two proposals have been prominent in recent years. The Marshall "charged lattice" theory attributes adsorption of cations by clays to an electrostatic attration of the clay particles for cations. This charge on the clay particles is attributed to various isomorphic substitutions in the lattice of the clay which result in an unbalanced charge on the particle. This isomorphic substitution can take place either in the silicon-oxygen tetrahedra of the silicate structure or with the aluminum …

The Characteristic Roots Of Certain Real Symmetric Matrices, Joseph Frederick Elliott Aug 1953

The Characteristic Roots Of Certain Real Symmetric Matrices, Joseph Frederick Elliott

Masters Theses

The main purpose of this thesis is to collect and coordinate some known results in the study of characteristic roots of certain real symmetric matrices. Specifically, most of the matrices considered have their elements aij = 0 except for I i - J I < 1 and are known as Jacobi matrices. The thesis fills in the details of two papers by D. E. Rutherford [12; 13]1 , with some translation of his results for determinants to the problem of finding characteristic roots of matrices. Some of the results obtained are briefly discussed relative to certain theorems on bounds for characteristic roots.

The first part of the paper is an attempt to show some of the physical sources of the problem …

Szilard-Chalmers Reactions, Anita Camilli Mewherter Jun 1953

Szilard-Chalmers Reactions, Anita Camilli Mewherter

Honors Theses

Since discovery of radioactivity at the turn of the century, the use of radioactive isotopes has become increasingly significant to research in the fields of chemistry, biology, botany, and medicine. An important use of these radioactive isotopes is the tracer or indicator method. For example, a portion of radioactive potassium may be added to a sample of of stable potassium to be studied. The fact that a given isotope is radioactive does not, in most cases, affect its chemical properties. The presence of the active isotope allows the potassium now to be followed through a chemical or biological process. This …

The Catalytic Vapor Phase Alklation Of Phenol, Robert Andrew Clendinning Jun 1953

The Catalytic Vapor Phase Alklation Of Phenol, Robert Andrew Clendinning

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research is to study the reaction between ethyl alcohol and phenol over a chemically activated alumina catalyst at several temperatures. The reaction of phenol and ethyl alcohol is also studied over the support used in preparing the activated catalyst to determine the catalytic activity of the support. An attempt is also made to correlate the data obtained by previous workers at Union College, who have studied the reaction between phenol and methyl alcohol and the reaction between phenol and ethyl alcohol.
