A Study Of Alcoholysis Using Methyl Esters And Tall Oil, Raymond Martin Frey Jan 1950

A Study Of Alcoholysis Using Methyl Esters And Tall Oil, Raymond Martin Frey

Bachelors’ Theses

One of the Easiest ways of preparing new esters is by heating an ester with another alcohol which frequently permits transfer of the acid radical from the original ester to the added alcohol, thous forming a new ester and liberating the other alcohol. Preparation of triglycerides of unsaturated fatty acids of 18 carbon atoms is hampered by the fact that prolonged heating in the usual ester formation methods causes both polymerization and condensation among acid radicals unless oxygen is carefully excluded from the reaction atmosphere. Consequently a method of acid interchange might afford the triglycerides at a faster rate and …

Certain Coloring Matters Derived From Vanallin And Methyl Salicylate, Thompson James Coe Jan 1950

Certain Coloring Matters Derived From Vanallin And Methyl Salicylate, Thompson James Coe

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to prepare a number of coloring matters by condensing vanillin with para-methoxyacetophenone, meta-nitroacetophenone, and para-bromoacetophenone, and to prepare another group by condensing methyl salicylate with acetophenone, para-methoxyacetophenone, meta-nitroacetophenone, and ortho-hydroxyacetophenone. Ethyl salicylate and para-methoxyacetophenone were condensed as a check.

A Grazing Incidence Vacuum Grating Spectrograph For Far Ultra Violet Spectroscopy, Lawrey Huber Chapin Jan 1950

A Grazing Incidence Vacuum Grating Spectrograph For Far Ultra Violet Spectroscopy, Lawrey Huber Chapin

Masters Theses

"Spectroscopy, in the region of the far ultraviolet from 100 Angstroms to 1000 Angstroms, requires special equipment and techniques, inasmuch as these wavelengths are highly absorbed by air. Many gases have resonant frequencies corresponding to the wavelengths mentioned and hence absorption bands appear in the spectrograms obtained by using spectrographs for the visible region. One solution of the problem of obtaining data in this region is to construct a spectrograph from which all intervening gas molecules have been removed, thus eliminating the absorbing material. A vacuum of 10⁻⁴ mm. of mercury is necessary to reduce the absorption to a value …

The Reflection Coefficient At The Truncated Corner Of A Rectangular Wave Guide, John Raymond Barcroft Jan 1950

The Reflection Coefficient At The Truncated Corner Of A Rectangular Wave Guide, John Raymond Barcroft

Masters Theses

"The term wave guide refers to a hollow conducting tube (usually of rectangular or circular cross section) filled with a dielectric (or vacuum) and used for the transmission of electromagnetic waves. We shall consider the guide to be bounded by a perfect conductor and to be filled with a lossless homogeneous isotropic dielectric (or vacuum). The electromagnetic wave in the guide must of course satisfy Maxwell's equation. It must also satisfy the boundary condition that there be no tangential component of electric field at the surface of the conductor. If the electromagnetic waves traveling along the guide meet a discontinuity …

Geology Of The Crystal Mine, Hardin County, Illinois, John Amsden Emery Jan 1950

Geology Of The Crystal Mine, Hardin County, Illinois, John Amsden Emery

Masters Theses

"The study of the geology and mineralization of the Crystal Mine was undertaken at the suggestion of Mr. Dodson G. Gibson of the Crystal Fluorspar Company, who allowed access to the mine and its records for this purpose. The problem was to develop a system of prospecting the so-called bedded-replacement fluorspar deposits of Hardin County, Illinois. It is believed that an economically feasible method has been developed. This method involves not only the actual finding of fluorspar, but also serves as a guide in revealing structural trends suggestive of mineralization.

The fluorspar deposits of the Crystal Mine are representative of …

Digestion Studies With Sheep And Wild Antelope On A Sagebrush Ration, Paul Harold Kohler Jan 1950

Digestion Studies With Sheep And Wild Antelope On A Sagebrush Ration, Paul Harold Kohler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Those who are responsible for the management of antelope, range livestock, and the range seek to maintain such a balance that al may thrive and reproduce. This is inevitably a difficult objective since the balance in numbers of antelope and livestock may be changed annually, but range flora changes only in long-time cycles. Therefore, the balance between the wild and domestic species and the range must be adjusted frequently by range and livestock management. The adjustment of the number of domestic animals to fit the carrying capacity of the range may be accomplished by changing management and marketing practices …

Ammonium And Alkylammonium Salts Of Carboxylic Acids As Characterizing Derivatives, Hal Gilbert Lankford Jan 1950

Ammonium And Alkylammonium Salts Of Carboxylic Acids As Characterizing Derivatives, Hal Gilbert Lankford

Masters Theses

"One of the methods widely used to establish the identity and purity of an organic compound is to prepare various derivatives, the properties of which have been reported in the literature. The object of this investigation was to prepare ammonium and alkylammonium salts of carboxylic acid and determine their utility as characterization derivatives. Should these salts meet the requirements of a satisfactory derivative, they would be particularly valuable from a standpoint time, since they are generally very quickly formed"--Introduction, page 1.

The Theory Of The Specific Heat Of A Face-Centered Cubic Lattice, Charles Robert Bonnell Jan 1950

The Theory Of The Specific Heat Of A Face-Centered Cubic Lattice, Charles Robert Bonnell

Masters Theses

"It is generally accepted that a normal crystalline solid can be pictured at absolute zero as an assembly of atoms at rest arranged at periodic lattice points. Since at higher temperatures each molecule becomes a harmonic oscillator about its lattice point, it is necessary to know the distribution of normal modes of vibration in order to calculate the thermodynamic properties of the lattice...Many approaches have been made to get a simple solution of the problem, but either accuracy is sacrificed for simplicity, or the solutions demand a very considerable amount of labor. The classical theories failed to explain the change …

Intermolecular Potential Functions For Liquid Argon And Liquid Mercury, Richard H. Kerr Jan 1950

Intermolecular Potential Functions For Liquid Argon And Liquid Mercury, Richard H. Kerr

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this research is to obtain such intermolecular potential functions for liquid argon and liquid mercury by use of the experimental radial density functions available for these two liquids over a wide range of temperatures. We shall introduce the notion of a correlation between the motions of atoms in neighboring cells in a cell theory of liquid structure, and derive a theoretical radial density function involving the intermolecular potential function for a pair of atoms in the liquid. This radial density function, or as it is frequently termed, the atomic distribution function, applied to the experimental data should …

An Ecological Study Of The Foraminifera Of Mason Inlet, North Carolina, Daniel N. Miller Jr. Jan 1950

An Ecological Study Of The Foraminifera Of Mason Inlet, North Carolina, Daniel N. Miller Jr.

Masters Theses

"Mason Inlet. North Carolina is a lagoonal marsh area with warm-temperate water, the salinity ranging from fresh to salt water. Nine collecting stations comprise an ecological gradient across the environment.

Forty-two species of foraminifera are recorded from the inlet, ranging in their affinities from brackish water to open-sea facies. Several extensions of range are recorded both northward and southward.

Substratum conditions apparently control the distribution of foraminifera within the inlet. Clean, fine sand provided the largest faunal populations. A depauperate assemblage was found in an inorganic, argillaceous substratum. The largest population of arenaceous forms was found at the channel through …

Further Studies Of The Reactions Of Quinoxaline, 2-Methyl-, And 2,3-Dimethylquinoxaline, Chester E. Hamilton Jan 1950

Further Studies Of The Reactions Of Quinoxaline, 2-Methyl-, And 2,3-Dimethylquinoxaline, Chester E. Hamilton

Theses and Dissertations

A long term research program into the chemistry of quinoxalines has been instituted at Brigham Young University. The literature of quinoxaline chemistry was reviewed and assembled in one paper. Methods of preparation of 2,3-dimethyl- and 2- methylquinoxaline were studied and improved. The bromination of 2,3-dimethylquinoxaline using N-bromosuccinimide was accomplished and an anil addition using quinoxaline and phenyllithium was achieved. Efforts to prepare vinylquinoxalines were unsuccessful. In order to pursue an investigation into the numerous reactions of the 1,4 addition type, a method of preparations of vinyl-quinoxalines must be achieved. In the present investigation, various methods of synthesis of vinyl- and …

An Electrochemical Determination Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Silver And Mercury Sulfides, Arthur G. Cole Sep 1949

An Electrochemical Determination Of The Thermodynamic Properties Of Silver And Mercury Sulfides, Arthur G. Cole

Theses and Dissertations

The problem consists of measuring accurately the free energy of formation, heat of formation, entropy, and solubility product constant of silver and mercury sulfides, and is a part of a larger study extending to many other metal sulfides. The confusion now existing in the chemical literature amply justifies a study of this nature. The thermodynamic properties of several important metal sulfides have never been measured, and the only values available for them are estimates. Determinations of the properties of many other metal sulfides have been carried out, but the results given by different authors often differ widely.

Endomorphisms And Translations Of Semigroups, Eldon E. Posey Aug 1949

Endomorphisms And Translations Of Semigroups, Eldon E. Posey

Masters Theses

This thesis is a study of some of the properties of mappings or semigroups into semigroups. In Section 1, definitions and basic concepts are given, with brief mention of some well known properties of semigroups and of mappings. Section 2 is devoted to a few theroems which are useful in the process of finding the semigroup of all endomorphisms of a given semigroup. When theorems on endomorphisms are valid in the more general situation in which a semigroup is mapped homomorphically on another semigroup, we state and prove the theorems in the more general setting. Section 3 consists of some …

Semigroup Ideals, Kenneth Scott Carmen Aug 1949

Semigroup Ideals, Kenneth Scott Carmen

Masters Theses

In the literature of ideals a left ideal L of a system S has usually been defined by the inclusion of SL ⊆ L and a right ideal R by the inclusion RS ⊆ R. On the other hand a left zero element z is usually defined by the equation za = z and a right zero element by the equation az = z ; similarly a left or right identity element e is defined by the equation ea = a or ae = a respectively. The author has in this paper made the terms left and right when applied …

An Investigation Of The Radioactivity Of Oilwell Drilling Fluid, With Depth, Of Wells In The Berland Field Of Rooks County, Milford W. Johnston Jul 1949

An Investigation Of The Radioactivity Of Oilwell Drilling Fluid, With Depth, Of Wells In The Berland Field Of Rooks County, Milford W. Johnston

Master's Theses

In reviewing the foregoing literature and in consideration of the very important place of the state of Kansas in the nation's production of petroleum, it was thought that possibly a contribution might be made to the general subject of geophysical prospecting for oil by the adoption and execution of the problem proposed by the title of this thesis. Since a similar but more scattered study of this problem had been previously made by Lippert with the use of an electroscope, it was considered worth-while to repeat the electroscopic observations together with Geiger-Mueller Counter observations on a new series of wells …

A Determination Of The Decomposition Potential Of Sulfamic Acid And Certain Of Its Metallic Salts, Francis J. Shell Jul 1949

A Determination Of The Decomposition Potential Of Sulfamic Acid And Certain Of Its Metallic Salts, Francis J. Shell

Master's Theses

The present investigation of decomposition potentials, or the potential where continuous electrolysis begins, was suggested by a paper by Choguill (5) on the electrodeposition of some metals from solutions of their sulfamates. Sulfamic acid or amidosulfonic acid H2N•SO2•OH is a strong inorganic acid obtained from chlorosulfonic acid and ammonia, or by heating urea with fuming sulfuric acid. The latter process is now used on a commercial scale. The acid forms white or colorless non-hygroscopic crystals that are stable when dry but in solution at elevated temperatures it slowly hydrolyzes forming ammonium bisulfate.

A Study Of Aldehyde Derivatives Of Metallic Sulfamates, Edmond A. Morin Jul 1949

A Study Of Aldehyde Derivatives Of Metallic Sulfamates, Edmond A. Morin

Master's Theses

Sulfamic acid at one time had no particular value, and very little was known about the physical and chemical properties of this acid. At the present time , however, this acid is a commercial product of considerable importance and extensive investigation has been conducted to discover its many chemical properties. A very interesting group of compounds derived from sulfamates are the aldehyde addition products. The aldehyde derivatives of calcium sulfamate were studied and had a particular interest because of their greater stability, especially in the isolated, solid form. The aldehyde addition products of calcium studied included benzaldehyde, furfuraldehyde, for aldehyde, …

The Reactions Of Ethyl Acetoacetate With Certain Halogen Derivatives Of Alcohols, Harold E. Sullivan Jul 1949

The Reactions Of Ethyl Acetoacetate With Certain Halogen Derivatives Of Alcohols, Harold E. Sullivan

Master's Theses

Chemical literature records many series of compounds produced by the acetoacetic ester synthesis, but in no instance is combination of the acetoacetic ester with the halogenated alcohols, of which the chlorohydrins are examples, mentioned. The products of these reactions are substituted derivatives of the acetoacetic ester. These products yield, upon hydrolysis, hydroxy-ketones. These acids and ketones may serve as intermediates for synthesizing other compounds. Many compounds which have medicinal value, such as pyrazolones and other ring compounds, may be synthesized from the acetoacetic ester derivatives. This study of the reactions of the acetoacetic ester with certain halogen derivatives of alcohols …

Solid Reactions: The Influence Of Temperature And Concentration, Norman H. Kowert Jul 1949

Solid Reactions: The Influence Of Temperature And Concentration, Norman H. Kowert

Bachelors’ Theses

Reactions are constantly taking place all around us. They are the basis of chemistry. Without reactions, there could be no change, and, therefore, no chemistry. Most reactions can be easily visualized; as, for instance, when two liquids are mixed together, or two gases, or a gas and a liquid. When reactions between these substances take place, we take it as a matter of course. There is another type of reaction, however, which does take place, but which is not easily visualized. This is the reaction between two solid substances. Due in part to the nature of solids, their crystalline form, …

The Preparation And Attempted Polymerization Of Beta-Chlorostyrenes, Curtis Usher Coleman Jun 1949

The Preparation And Attempted Polymerization Of Beta-Chlorostyrenes, Curtis Usher Coleman

Honors Theses

The polymerization of unsubstituted styrenes had been studied by a number of worker, among them Wheland (11), Stoermer and Kootz (9), and Ziegler and Bahr (13), but none of these workers have studied the effect of halogen substitution on the side chain. This has been studied by Worrall (12), and he concluded that such substitution blocked polymerization. It was the purpose of the present work to prepare α-chlorostyrene, and to carry the work of Worrall a step further by seeking some reagent which would bring about the polymerization of α-chlorostyrene. A further purpose was to prepare a new α-chlorostyrene, determine …

Some Colloidal Aspects Of Portland Cement, Eugene D. Day Jun 1949

Some Colloidal Aspects Of Portland Cement, Eugene D. Day

Honors Theses

Excellent general discussions of the earlier literature concerning the rival crystallization and colloid theories as applied to the setting and hardening of Portland cement are found in Bogue (4, 5), Kuhl (21), and Lea and Desch (24). These authors, along with Steinour (41), have tried to resolve these apparently conflicting hypotheses in the light of more recent investigations and have clearly outlined those areas of conflict which need further clarification through continued research. Recent work by Hedin (16) has shown that when ion concentrations and ion activities in solution are changed by the addition, for example, of gypsum, a sufficiently …

Kinetics Of Displacement Reactions Which Result In A Retention Of Configuration, Victor Frank Mattson Jun 1949

Kinetics Of Displacement Reactions Which Result In A Retention Of Configuration, Victor Frank Mattson

Honors Theses

Depending upon the halogenating agent and the reaction conditions d-ethyl medelate may form either d - or 1-ethyl phenylchloroacetate. Situations of this type are common and have proven to be an interesting and a productive field for investigation into the mechanisms of organic substitution reactions. The inversion reaction (Walden Inversion) appears to be the more typical of the two and is also the more readily explained. A and B ions have a repulsive effect upon each other and classical theory would demand that the ion B enter the molecule on the side opposite A. This displacement would of necessity result …
