Radioactivity Of The Pre-Cambrian Section Of The Bourbon, Missouri, Well Core By Measurement Of The Total Hard Gamma Radiation, Paul E. Damon

Masters Theses

"In December of 1947 Mr. Robert Van Nostrand and the writer became interested in the problem of the distribution of natural radioactivity and the applications of radioactivity to geology. A cooperative survey of the literature on the subject was undertaken. Later the writer decided to follow up the survey with a research project. Consultations with Dr. Z. V. Harvalik of the Missouri School of Mines Physics Department, and Dr. E. L. Clark and Mr. O. M. Bishop of the Missouri Geological Survey, followed. The nature of the project was evolved when Dr. Clark, with the consent of the U. S. …

The Kerr Electro-Optic Effect In Plastic Materials Transmitting Infra-Red Radiation, James Edson Dueker Jan 1948

The Kerr Electro-Optic Effect In Plastic Materials Transmitting Infra-Red Radiation, James Edson Dueker

Masters Theses

"Much work has been done investigating the Kerr Electro-Optic effect and what physical properties of a substance lead to the occurrence of the phenomenon. Information now available indicates a relationship between molecular shape and orientation with the Kerr Effect, hence any added information increases the possibility for finding the exact relationship and the molecular structure of substances. The Kerr Effect, has been used in a number of applications other than for the study of molecular construction of matter. Many applications have been made to form Electro-Optic shutters. This field of work has been increased to include light flash production and …

A Microwave Polarimeter, Alfred E. Schwaneke Jan 1948

A Microwave Polarimeter, Alfred E. Schwaneke

Masters Theses

"The dissertation on the following pages may read more like a construction article than an approach to a study of physical phenomena. If so, its purpose is clearly defined. this subject has been studied little from an experimental viewpoint, so one of the main objectives of this writing is to describe the instrument so others may read the article and reproduce this or an equivalent device without a great amount of reading and searching for information on just how to fabricate and mount the parts. No single book or article that I know of covers the inexpensive construction of such …

A Study Of The Prussian Blue Test For Nitrogen, Marilyn M. Erickson Jan 1948

A Study Of The Prussian Blue Test For Nitrogen, Marilyn M. Erickson

Bachelors’ Theses

The problem of obtaining good nitrogen tests on all types of organic compounds interested the author as a result of past experience in the identification of organic compounds.

The practical application of a positive solution to this problem would be an aid to the students of characterization of organic compounds. It is necessary for them to make an elementary analysis in order to determine the class into which the unknown compound belongs. A nitrogen test which will give definite results will eliminate any doubt as to the presence of nitrogen.

Preparation And Physical Properties Of Some Unsymmetrically Substituted Ethanes, William F. Buth Jan 1948

Preparation And Physical Properties Of Some Unsymmetrically Substituted Ethanes, William F. Buth

Bachelors’ Theses

Early in 1947, while investigating the potentialities of various compounds for use as liquid dielectric materials, A method was found for the preparation of unsymmetrical ditolyl ethane by a condensation method using sulfuric acid. This material was thought to have excellent dielectric characteristics so it was prepared and tested. The tests were favorable enough, to warrant further investigation into the field of the unsymmetrical ethanes. Being aware of the physical properties required for a good liquid dielectric; it was proposed to prepare a few of the related compounds for which no data was known to exist and to select those …

The major portion of the work was done on the Monterey Peninsula between Point Pines, 36° 38' 30" N. latitude, 121° 56' 00" W. longitude, and Pescadero Point 30° 33' 40" N. latitude, 121° 56' 30" W. longitude. The work on homing in Acmaea persona, artificial parthenogenesis in the eggs of Acmaea pelta, and artifical insemination of the eggs of Acmaea pelta was carried on at the Pacific Marine Station, Dillon Beach, California at 38° 14' 30" N. latitude, …

The Effect Of Spontaneous Crystallization Of Some Inorganic Compounds At The Critical Temperature Of Their Solvents, John William Buttrey Jan 1948

The Effect Of Spontaneous Crystallization Of Some Inorganic Compounds At The Critical Temperature Of Their Solvents, John William Buttrey

Masters Theses

"For many years the phenomena which occur at the critical temperature of liquids have been investigated. And since 1912, when Laue and other discovered that a beam of x-rays could be made to yield a diffraction pattern by passing it through a crystal, scientists have been attempting to change the x-ray pattern for various crystals by somehow changing the arrangement of the atoms in the crystal lattice. Harvalik has already shown that crystallization occurs when a solvent reaches the critical point and his work indicates that under these conditions of crystallization there is a change in the crystal pattern. The …

The Effect Of Metallic Fluorides On Oleic Acid At Elevated Temperatures, Lorraine W. Dupuis Jan 1948

The Effect Of Metallic Fluorides On Oleic Acid At Elevated Temperatures, Lorraine W. Dupuis

Bachelors’ Theses

The problem of finding the effect of metallic fluorine compounds on oleic acid at elevated temperatures was presented in connection with the thesis of J.J. Wocasek of Marquette University. Doctor Wocasek had used fluorine compounds as catalysts in a.n attempt to find a substitute for tung oil. He used the fluorides as catalysts in the esterification of glycerol with unsaturated acids.

Petrology Of The Upper Marietta And Hundred Sandstones In Southeastern Ohio, Wayne Dudley Martin Jan 1948

Petrology Of The Upper Marietta And Hundred Sandstones In Southeastern Ohio, Wayne Dudley Martin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

A petrographic study was made of two Lower Permian (Dunkard Series) sandstones in southeastern Ohio. The sandstone members with which the investigation was concerned are the Upper Marietta sandstone and the Hundred sandstone. The study was made in order to determine the origin of the sandstones and the practicability of applying geologic methods to the grindstone industry. The results of the study indicate that although some of the constituents of these sandstones were derived from igneous and sedimentary source rocks, a relatively large amount of material was derived from metamorphic rocks. The detritus was transported from the east and deposited …

A Phase Of The Upper Devonian Of Western Highland County, Virginia, Helen Pulver Foreman

Honors Papers

This paper is a study of the Brallier and Chemung formations of west Highland County, Virginia. The limits of the Brallier formation are determined on the basis ot faunal and lithological evidence, and correlations made with formations in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia.

The field work was carried on during the latter part of the summer of 1947 and the identification and correlations worked out in the winter of 1947 and the spring of 1948.

Honors Papers

Throughout the course of the school year 1947-48 the writer has collected specimens of the Bedford shale from various localities within Lorain County, Ohio. Textural and mineralogical analyses have been made of the specimens in order to determine the textural and petrologic variation between the two facies, and whether each of the facies was deposited under similar conditions.

The Determination Of The Surface Tension Of Benzyl Ether, Sze-Kwei Min Jan 1948

The Determination Of The Surface Tension Of Benzyl Ether, Sze-Kwei Min

Masters Theses

"The accurate determination of surface tension is of importance in the investigation of theories of surface structure, the structure of liquids, molecular cohesion, in the study of colloids, especially in physiological work, and in various lines of technical chemistry. The two methods most commonly used for determining surface tension are the capillary rise method and the drop weight method. The theory of the former is simple, but its technique is difficult. Its use in some cases is the cause of errors as high as 30%, due to its inapplicability to certain classes of substance, and is much more sensitive to …
