Standard And Non-Standard Log-Linear Models For 2 × 2 Contingency Tables, G M Toufiqul Hoque
Standard And Non-Standard Log-Linear Models For 2 × 2 Contingency Tables, G M Toufiqul Hoque
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Log-linear models can be used to model the joint relationship of two or more categorical variables in a multiway contingency table. In a log-linear model, the logarithm of the expected joint counts (or the logarithm of the joint probabilities) in a contingency table can be written as a linear model.
Most log-linear models used in practice are standard. Standard log-linear models include the traditional parameter terms we see in ANOVA models: an overall effect, main effects, and various kinds of interaction terms.
Standard log-linear models are divided into hierarchical and non-hierarchical. Hierarchical models satisfy the hierarchy principle: if a higher-order …

Photoelectic Driven Decomposition Of Uracil Via Hard X-Ray Irradiation, Trimaan Malik
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Radiation damage into biological samples creates substantial challenges across a wide range of fields, from biochemistry to materials science. This comprehensive study investigates the effects of x-ray irradiation on uracil, the only nucleobase exclusive to Ribonucleic acid (RNA), to understand how doping with 10% (by mass) of specific powdered elements impacts the sustained radiation damage. The experiments were conducted at the Brockhouse Undulator Beamline of the Canadian Light Source synchrotron. Virgin and doped uracil samples were irradiated with hard x-rays, above their respective absorption edges, and studied with x-ray diffraction to compare their decomposition behaviors. The Uracil reflections on the …
Plant-Plant Interaction In Early- Vs. Late-Successional Varieties Of The Hawaiian Landscape-Dominant Tree, Metrosideros Polymorpha, Tomoko Sakishima
Plant-Plant Interaction In Early- Vs. Late-Successional Varieties Of The Hawaiian Landscape-Dominant Tree, Metrosideros Polymorpha, Tomoko Sakishima
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Plant-plant interactions play an important role in assembling plant communities. Interactions between neighboring plants can vary as a result of the genetic relatedness of neighbors, impacting rates of growth and patterns of resource allocation. When growing alongside close relatives, some species decrease their growth in a form of cooperation, while others grow faster through facilitation. A complication of plant interaction studies arises because decreased growth in the presence of close relatives can also be due to competition for resources, which increases with phenotypic similarity. Further complicating matters, mycorrhizal fungi, through their connections with plant roots, may strongly influence plant interactions. …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In this thesis I apply the numeric method, the Method of Fundamental Solutions (MFS), to solve for the fields create by ion traps in various configurations, such as quadrupole ion traps, linear ion traps, toroidal ion traps, and toroidal surface ion traps. The traps are then designed to maximize desired qualities such as minimization of their anharmonicity, and their ability to shuttle ions. A particular focus will be on the toroidal surface ion trap, as well as its ability to shuttle ions. This trap is planned for future experiments involving measurement of the electron Electric Dipole Moment.

Investigating Controls On Temporal And Spatial Variation Of Dissolved Uranium At Springs In Horn Creek Drainage, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, Usa, Collin Davidson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Groundwater is a critical resource in the Grand Canyon, providing water to local communities, millions of annual visitors, and ecosystems. One major concern for this critical resource is the potential for uranium contamination in conjunction with uranium mining efforts. Upper Horn Bedrock Spring (UHB) in the Horn Creek drainage of the Grand Canyon sits below the oldest uranium mine in the region, Orphan Lode mine. UHB spring contains the highest concentration of dissolved uranium in the region, eclipsing the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) set by the USEPA by an order of magnitude on average. This research and recent collaboration with …
Understanding Disk Substructures With 3d Self-Consistent Thermodynamics, Shangjia Zhang
Understanding Disk Substructures With 3d Self-Consistent Thermodynamics, Shangjia Zhang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Protoplanetary disks are birthplaces of planets. The past decade witnessed a great advance- ment in disk observations by Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and extreme adaptive optics (ExAOs). Hundreds of disks have been observed at high angular resolutions and revealed rich substructures (e.g., gaps/rings) at midplane and atmosphere, at least part of which are per- turbed by planets. Deep understanding of disk physics has a great potential to unveil more young planets from substructures and distinguish those that are not caused by planets. I worked on con- straining young planet populations using planet-disk interaction simulations and substructures and self-consistent treatment …
Unraveling The Physics Of Quasar Jets Using Hst Polarimetry, Devon Clautice
Unraveling The Physics Of Quasar Jets Using Hst Polarimetry, Devon Clautice
Theses and Dissertations
We present a multiwavelength study of three high-power FR II (quasar) jets -- 3C 273, PKS 0637-752, and 1150+497 -- with an emphasis on new high-quality Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical polarimetry and Chandra X-ray Observatory imaging. Relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei transport energy and mass from the supermassive black hole’s accretion region out to Megaparsec-scale lobes, with effects that feedback into galaxy formation and cluster energetics. We build on recent work which has called into question our fundamental understanding of FR II jet physics, and suggest that highly-efficient particle acceleration must be taking place in situ …
Mercury Biomagnification In Aquatic Food Webs Of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Zachary Winston Clark
Mercury Biomagnification In Aquatic Food Webs Of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Zachary Winston Clark
Masters Theses
Mercury is a widespread pollutant threatening human, fish, and ecosystem health on a global scale. Biomagnification concentrates mercury in upper trophic level organisms including predatory fishes, a primary route of dietary mercury exposure for humans. However, mercury biomagnification is not well understood in stream ecosystems, especially in places with no known point sources of contamination. A 2016 study revealed that Smallmouth Bass Micropterus dolomeiu mercury concentrations varied between three streams in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), Tennessee USA. However, the reason for this spatial variation in mercury concentrations is not understood. Our objectives were to (1) measure environmental and …

An experimental effort was derived to utilize existing experimental data from multiple sources and determine which data source …
Genetic Algorithm Optimization Of Experiment Design For Targeted Uncertainty Reduction, Alexander Amedeo Depillis
Genetic Algorithm Optimization Of Experiment Design For Targeted Uncertainty Reduction, Alexander Amedeo Depillis
Masters Theses
Nuclear cross sections are a set of parameters that capture probability information about various nuclear reactions. Nuclear cross section data must be experimentally measured, and this results in simulations with nuclear data-induced uncertainties on simulation outputs. This nuclear data-induced uncertainty on most parameters of interest can be reduced by adjusting the nuclear data based on the results from an experiment. Integral nuclear experiments are experiments where the results are related to many different cross sections. Nuclear data may be adjusted to have less uncertainty by adjusting them to match the results obtained from integral experiments. Different integral experiments will adjust …

This approach utilizes hyperband tuning to optimize network hyperparameters, demonstrating its effectiveness on a HfOx memristor and establishing a versatile modeling strategy for both single-state and multistate devices.
The second approach explores the application of Mixture Density Networks (MDNs) to encapsulate the inherent stochasticity …
Mapping Arbitrary Spiking Neural Networks To The Ravens Neuroprocessor, Jongheon Park
Mapping Arbitrary Spiking Neural Networks To The Ravens Neuroprocessor, Jongheon Park
Masters Theses
In neuromorphic computing, a hardware implementation of a spiking neural network is used to provide improved speed and power efficiency over simulations of the networks on a traditional Von Neumann architecture. These hardware implementations employ bio-inspired architecture usually consisting of artificial neurons and synapses implemented in either analog, digital, or mixed-signal circuits. Since these hardware spiking neural networks are designed to support arbitrary networks under the constraints imposed by the available hardware resource, they have to be programmed by off-chip software with awareness of those constraints. The TENNLab research group at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville has recently developed the …

Channel Response To Flow Augmentation: Diamond Fork River, Ut, Diane E. Wagner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
A river’s physical features and channel dimensions are determined by the water and sediment supplied to it. The Diamond Fork River, located in central Utah—received large trans-basin diversion flows from 1915-2003, providing an exceptional opportunity to explore the response of a river to a large increase in flow.
Our project goals were to describe 1) channel response to this large and long artificial flow augmentation and 2) how the channel recovered after the removal of the diversion flows. The objective of this thesis is to document the channel condition throughout the 20th century to present day as a basis …

In conjunction with this research, the ODVC (Optimal Design for Variance Components) package was built to provide tools that …
Inferring A Hierarchical Input Type For An Sql Query, Santosh Aryal
Inferring A Hierarchical Input Type For An Sql Query, Santosh Aryal
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
SQL queries are a common method to retrieve information from databases, much like asking a detailed question and getting a precise answer. Plug-and-play queries simplify the process of querying. In a Plug-and-play SQL query a programmer sketches the shape of the input to the query as a hierarchy. But the programmer could make a mistake in specifying the hierarchy and it takes programmer time and effort to specify the hierarchy. A better solution is to automatically infer the hierarchy from a query. This thesis presents a system to infer a hierarchical input type for an SQL query. We consider two …

Improving The Performance Of Wi-Fi Indoor Localization In Both Dense And Unknown Environments, Quang Truong Hai
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Indoor localization is important for various pervasive applications, garnering considerable research attention over recent decades. Despite numerous proposed solutions, the practical application of these methods in real-world environments with high applicability remains challenging. One compelling use case for building owners is the ability to track individuals as they navigate through the building, whether for security, customer analytics, space utilization planning, or other management purposes. However, this task becomes exceedingly difficult in environments with hundreds or thousands of people in motion. Conversely, the need to track oneself’s location is also meaningful from the perspective of individuals traversing in crowded spaces. These …

Terrestrial Exchange Of Atmospheric Metals: Insights From Fallout Radionuclides, Joshua D. Landis
Terrestrial Exchange Of Atmospheric Metals: Insights From Fallout Radionuclides, Joshua D. Landis
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Forests mediate the exchange of gases and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere over 30% of global land area. Because forest foliage efficiently absorbs PM with persistent pollutants including metals Pb and Hg, as well as CO2 and gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), this exchange profoundly influences the composition of the atmosphere as well as terrestrial biogeochemical cycles. The processes by which PM is absorbed remain enigmatic, however, due to the complexity of micrometeorological physics and submicron physical scale of the interaction. Here, measurements of fallout radionuclides (FRNs) beryllium-7 and lead-210, which are quintessential tracers …
An Investigation Of The Interactions Of Gradient Coherence And Network Pruning In Neural Networks, Zachary Yauney
An Investigation Of The Interactions Of Gradient Coherence And Network Pruning In Neural Networks, Zachary Yauney
Theses and Dissertations
We investigate the coherent gradient hypothesis and show that the coherence measurements are different on real and random data regardless of the network's initialization. We introduce "diffs," an attempt at an element-wise approximation at coherence, and investigate their properties. We study how coherence is affected by increasing the width of simple fully-connected networks. We then prune those fully-connected networks and find that sparse networks outperform dense networks with the same number of nonzero parameters. In addition, we show that it is possible to increase the performance of a sparse network by scaling the size of the dense parent network it …
Classification Of Topological Defects In Cosmological Models, Abigail Swanson
Classification Of Topological Defects In Cosmological Models, Abigail Swanson
Student Research Submissions
In nature, symmetries play an extremely significant role. Understanding the symmetries of a system can tell us important information and help us make predictions. However, these symmetries can break and form a new type of symmetry in the system. Most notably, this occurs when the system goes through a phase transition. Sometimes, a symmetry can break and produce a tear, known as a topological defect, in the system. These defects cannot be removed through a continuous transformation and can have major consequences on the system as a whole. It is helpful to know what type of defect is produced when …

Graph-Based Learning, Jason Gronn
Honors Projects
An educational approach to teaching students based on prerequisite knowledge they may or may not have is presented. This approach represents educational content in the form of a graph, where edges link each topic to the prerequisites of that topic. A proof-of-concept website is created based on this approach, where qualitative results are observed and a number of conclusions are drawn. Some of the findings are that, while it can prevent users from being confused by lacked prior knowledge, the users may instead be confused by the presentation of the graph structure. The work finds that the approach is workable, …

Coordination polymers are chemical complexes with versatile applications such as catalysts, electrical conduc-tors, non-linear optics, magnetics, chemical sensing, and molecular storage. The polymers are comprised of a repeating series of metal-ligand complexes, which form various structures in varying ratios depending on the metal and ligand used. Certain metal-ligand combinations have shown particular promise as potentially being polymers or, if not polymers, possessing other useful features such as electromagnetic conductivity. Complexes were synthesized using silver(I) and manganese(II) with the ligands methimazole, 2-mercaptoimidazole, and thiocarbanilide with counterions of either chloride or nitrate. These com-plexes were characterized using elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and …
