Effects Of Insulin And Insulin Mimetics On Antioxidant Enzyme Levels: In Vivo And In Vitro, Shikha Varma

Masters Theses

Tissue antioxidation status is considered to be an important factor for elucidating the etiology of diabetes and its physiological complications. This study was aimed to determine the in vivo antioxidant enzyme levels in the altered antioxidant status of diabetic rat liver with the treatment of two potent insulin mimetics, vanadium and selenate. The direct effects of vanadate, selenate, and zinc (another insulin mimetic) on the antioxidant enzyme levels in primary rat hepatocytes in culture was also determined. Levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and gluthahione peroxidase (GPX) were determined in both model systems.

In the vivo model, insulin treatment …

The Variability Of Carbon Dioxide In The Vadose Zone, John J. Ring

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to observe and attempt to explain the variations of carbon dioxide in the vadose zone of a nature area in southwestern Michigan. Well nests, consisting of discrete soil gas sampling points and temperature probes set at depths ranging from 3 to 53 feet, were constructed in a sandy, glacial outwash plain. Soil samples were collected for analysis of organic carbon content during installation. Soil gas samples were collected periodically from June, 1992 to March, 1993 and analyzed for CO2 and O2 concentrations. Occasionally, samples were collected and analyzed for isotopic C13 …

The Effects Of Air Sparging On Aquifer Hydraulic Conductivity, Hans Neve Dec 1995

The Effects Of Air Sparging On Aquifer Hydraulic Conductivity, Hans Neve

Masters Theses

Air sparging is a relatively new technology used to remove organic contaminants from aquifers. This remediation technique involves injecting into contaminated portions of water table aquifers. Theoretically air sparging will reduce aquifer hydraulic conductivity. Injected air fills some of the available sediment pores, thus restricting the flow of water to the remaining water-filled pore spaces.

The purpose of this study was to measure the reduction in hydraulic conductivity due to air sparging. This was assessed using both laboratory and field techniques. The hydraulic conductivities of several different sediments were determined in the laboratory using a large constant head permeameter modified …

Adaptive Methods For Distributed Video Presentation, Crispin Cowan, Shanwei Cen, Jonathan Walpole, Carlton Pu Dec 1995

Adaptive Methods For Distributed Video Presentation, Crispin Cowan, Shanwei Cen, Jonathan Walpole, Carlton Pu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper describes problems and solutions for delivering real-time, multi-media presentations across the Internet. A key characteristic of presentations of continuous media datatypes, such as digital video and audio, is their need for predictable real-time data delivery. For example, an NTSC quality video presentation requires video frames to be displayed every 1/30th of a second. Variations in this display rate can be observable as stalls or glitches in the video stream and reduce the quality of the presentation [6]. Delivering such presentations across the Internet is difficult because highly variable band- width and latency make it difficult to predict the …

Mandibular Asymmetry In Unilateral Class Ii Malocclusion : A Cephalometric Study, Raed Z. Moussa

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study is to evaluate skeletal and dental asymmetry in unilateral class II malocclusion. A study group of 25 unilateral subdivision patients was compared to 25 class I malocclusion patients serving as the control group. Submento-vertical and frontal radiographs were used for the evaluation. Symmetry was evaluated by comparing measurements between right and left sides for both groups and matching the middle points with the midsagittal axis. Statistical paired and simple t-test were used to evaluate the difference between the two sides for both groups. The measurements showed no significant skeletal and dental asymmetries except for three …

Two-Wavelength Neodymium Based Lasers, Scott H. Mccracken Dec 1995

Two-Wavelength Neodymium Based Lasers, Scott H. Mccracken

Theses and Dissertations

A dual wavelength Q switched laser cavity has been successfully designed and assembled to evaluate the new neodymium (Nd) based materials. Initial characterization has been achieved for Nd:YAG and Nd:YLF. The results indicate that for a fixed pulse repetition frequency, the delay time can be used to adjust the relative energy between the 1.06 and 1.32 micrometer pulses. Any deficiency in the performance of one transition can be made up by performance in the other simply by changing the relative amount of time the population inversion is allowed to build up for each pulse. The best performance was obtained using …

Geochemical Evolution Of A Mid-Miocene Synextensional Volcanic Complex: The Dolan Springs Volcanic Field, Northwestern Arizona, Scott Michael Mcdaniel Dec 1995

Geochemical Evolution Of A Mid-Miocene Synextensional Volcanic Complex: The Dolan Springs Volcanic Field, Northwestern Arizona, Scott Michael Mcdaniel

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Dolan Springs volcanic field (DSV), of northwestern Arizona, is dominated by andesite and basaltic-andesite flows and breccias, with minor amounts of basalt, rhyolite, and ash-flow tuff. Geochemistry is used here as a tool to evaluate the roles and contributions of the lithospheric and asthenospheric mantles to magmatism related to Miocene extension in the Colorado River extension corridor (CREC). The majority of synextensional volcanic rocks in the DSV are geochemically similar to regional trends, but rare tholeiitic basalts erupted near the end of extension. The tholeiites have trace element signatures similar to ocean island basalt (OIB), but have isotopic values …

Mafic Volcanism In The Colorado Plateau: Basin And Range Transition Zone, Hurricane, Utah, Alexander Sanchez Dec 1995

Mafic Volcanism In The Colorado Plateau: Basin And Range Transition Zone, Hurricane, Utah, Alexander Sanchez

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Hurricane volcanic field (HVF) is a small-volume (0.48 km3) mafic volcanic field in the Colorado Plateau/Basin & Range Transition Zone located in the eastern part of the St. George basin in southwestern Utah. Strombolian-Hawaiian style eruptions produced thin (10 m) a'a lava flows and cinder (scoria) cones composed of vesicular basalt, bombs and agglutinate. Radiometric dating and geologic relationships demonstrate that the HVF formed over a period of at least 100,000 years. In the upper crust, magma probably rose along joints in sedimentary rocks because chains of volcanic vents follow joint orientation maxima in sedimentary rocks.

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrochemical behavior of l8/8 stainless steel in dilute thiosulphate solutionduring strained loading was studied by various electrochemical techniques and scanning electronmicroscope. It is evidenced that the corrosion activity of stainless steel increased with strained loading. The dynamic process of repassivation ,which may datermine the initiation ,the cease and developmentof the stress corrosion cracking for stainless steel ,was strongly influenced by both electrochemical andloading conditions. Pitting corrosion may locate preferentially on the sites which was suffered mostloading. The propagation of pitting corrosion of stainless steel may induce stress corrosion crakingunder certain conditions.

A Photoelectrochemical Investigation Of A.C.Modulated Passive Films On 304 Stainless Steel In Weak-Alkaline And Neutral Solution, Tianbao Du, Chunan Cao, Jiakang Yu, Haichao Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

A photoelectrochemical investigation has been carried out on AISI 304 stainlesssteeI AV modulated passive film in 0.1mol/L Na_2B_4O_7 and 0.5 mol/L Na_2SO_4 solution.Photocurrentcurve depends on the potential、passive condition and testing solutions. The results of the measurementsindicate that the photoresponse is determined by the defects in the electronic structure of the films whenthe defects lead to localized states in the bandgap region. It is concluded that the passive film on AISI304 stainless steel is in a highly disordered amorphous state.

Cyclic Voltammetric Calorimetry Studying The Deposition Of Copper Of Pt Electrodes, Yongchun Zhu, Robin H J Clark

Journal of Electrochemistry

In the present paper, cyclic voltammetric calorimetry has been used to study thedeposition of copper on platinum electrode from LiClO_4 aqueous solution. Cyclic voltammetricthermogram and cyclic voltammetric differential thermogram show that the deposition of copper on theelectrode is an exothermal process with a strong interaction between copper and platinum layer(-3227.0 kJ /mol).The electrochemical oxidation of the deposited copper is composed of twoprocesses :an endothermal activation process with 747.0 kJ/mol of activation enthalpy, and anexothermal oxidation reaction with-189.9 kJ/mol of the reaction enthalpy, which are accord withthe data from the theoritical estimation and thermodynamic handbook respectively.

Fabrication And Electrochemical Behaviors Of Thin Films Of Polyaniline By Langmuir-Blodgett Technique And Electropolymerization, Benzeng Hua, Zhaoxiong Xie, Yanzhen Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

Hydrogen-bond between stearic acid and aniline in subphase lead to Langmuirmonotayers of stearic acid-aniline,the molecular area of stearic acid-aniline is 26 nm ̄2.With surfacepressure increased into 50 mN/M,the hydrogen-bond would be rearranged ,aniline moleculartransales into vertical from horizontal, surface pressure decreased quickly. A new kind of Langmuirmonolayer is formed instead of collapse,it's molecular area decreases into 24 nm ̄2 and thicknessincreases with 0.25 nm. After electroreduction of L-B films depeited onto the surface ofSnO_2 electrode ,anilne layers between two stear acid matix could be polymerized into thin films ofpolyanilne. The structu re of thin films has ben studied by small angle X-ray scattering.Theelectrochemical properties …

Growth Kinetics And Breakdown Of Passive Films On Rebar Electrodes In Simulated Cement Pore Solution, Wei Chu, Yuanxiang Shi, Baoming Wei Nov 1995

Growth Kinetics And Breakdown Of Passive Films On Rebar Electrodes In Simulated Cement Pore Solution, Wei Chu, Yuanxiang Shi, Baoming Wei

Journal of Electrochemistry

The growth kinetics and breakdown of passive films on REBAR electrodes insimulated cement solution(pH=12.5 and 13.8)have been investigated using in situphotoelectrochemical methods and potential step method. The results show that there are two mainstages in the growth of the film ,with two rate functions characterized by linear relation between thefilm thickness and the direct logarithm of time. There is a sign in laser-scanning photoelectrochemicalmicroscopic image just before the passive film breaks down. The addition of inhibitor NaNO_2changesthe growth kinetics and thickness of the film ,and therefore improves the resistance of pitting corrosioninduced by chloride.

Genetic Epidemilogical Analysis Of Complex Disorders., Swapan Nath Dr. Nov 1995

Genetic Epidemilogical Analysis Of Complex Disorders., Swapan Nath Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The present study can be broadly classified in the area of genetic epidemiology, which is conventionally defined as a science that deals with the aetiology, distribution, and control of disease in groups of relatives and with inherited causes of disease in populations (Morton 1982, 1993). One of the major goals of genetic epidemiology is the study of the nature and extent of clustering of a disease in families and in defined ethnic groups. The study of a disorder within the genetic epidemiological framework is performed by testing :(1) whether the disorder clusters in families?(2) whether observed familiarity is caused by …

On Texture Image Analysis Using Fractal Geometry Based Features., Nirupam Sarkar Dr. Nov 1995

On Texture Image Analysis Using Fractal Geometry Based Features., Nirupam Sarkar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Visual textureTexture is a property to characterize a region of a scene. A set of natural texture images is shown in Fig. 1.1. A specific texture may be generated due to certain organization of several objects in a region, or due to the reflectance pattern caused by color variation or unevenness of an object surface. Since texture provides a lot of information of a region, texture analysis and synthesis are important components of digital image processing. It is difficult to provide a formal definition of texture although we perceive and recognize texture rather easily. According to Sklansky [152) "A region in …

Effect Of Deposition Conditions On The Texture Of Zinc Deposits, Shukai Xu, Fangzu Yang, Shaomin Zhou

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this paper, the effects of additives, complex agents and current densities on thetexture and grain size of the zinc deposits from zincate baths are studied by means of X raydiffraction. The results show that the existence of additive AA-1 causes the preferential orientationof(101) face;when DIE is added alone, the preferential orientation changes to(110) face;withadditives both DIE and AA-1,Zn deposits with highly preferential orientation of(110) are obtainedin a certain range of current densities, and if complex agents TEA and EDTA are simultaneouslyexisted ,fine granular and bright Zn deposits with highly preferential orientation can be obtained in thewider range of current densities.

Studies Of In-Situ Raman Spectroscopy On Deprotonation And Degeneration Of Ppy Films, Jinsong Gao, Jing Chen, Yanzhen Chen, Qi Xue, Zhongqun Tian

Journal of Electrochemistry

By combining the in-situ Raman spectroscopic technique with the normalelectrochemical measurements ,the behavior and structure of PPY films in neutral or basic solutionswere studied. The oxidized PPY loses protons on the N atoms of pyrrole rings and is deprotonated inthese solutions ,resulting the formation of the quinoid structure. It makes the C=C stretching vibrationbonds of PPY split.Because this quinoid structure can′t be further oxidized ,the PPY becomes moredifficult to be oxidized and less reversible with the increasing of pH value of solutions and the degree ofdeprotonation of PPY. In the strong basic solution ( pH=13),the PPY film is degenerated in thepotential …
