Potential Agronomic Benefits Of Wood Ash Application On Reclaimed Surface Mined Lands, David C. Ditsch, John H. Grove, William O. Thom

Soil Science News and Views

Wood ash is a by-product generated by paper companies, lumber manufacturing plants and utilities that bum wood products, bark and papermill sludge as a means of disposal and/or energy production. Large quantities of wood ash are generated by these industries since wood generally contains 6 to 10% ash. Most of these ashes are landfilled or discarded in lagoons. However, the increasing expense of landfill disposal has led to increased interest in the land application of industry generated wood ash.

Synthesis Of Fluorinated Proline Analogs For The Potential Inhibition Of Proline Oxidase, Brent Hilbert Jan 1995

Synthesis Of Fluorinated Proline Analogs For The Potential Inhibition Of Proline Oxidase, Brent Hilbert

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Proline oxidase is an enzyme that has been isolated from the inner membrane of rat liver mitochondria. It is the catalyst in the first step of the metabolic pathway for proline-glutamate interconversion. The enzyme is specific for L-proline which is oxidized to Æ-pyrroline- 5-carboxylic acid. 4,4- difluoro-L-proline has demonstrated irreversible inhibition of proline oxidase. Further kinetic studies of this inhibition need to be performed in order to elucidate a mechanism for the inhibition. Information regarding the site of the oxidation of proline may also be obtained from these studies. New synthetic routes to 4,4-difluoro-L-proline, and the "cis" and "trans" non- …

The Effects Of Nutrient Loading On Plant And Algae Population: A Comparison Study Of East Gemini Lake And Lower Stumpf Lake, Nick Leonard Jan 1995

The Effects Of Nutrient Loading On Plant And Algae Population: A Comparison Study Of East Gemini Lake And Lower Stumpf Lake, Nick Leonard

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Eutrophication of lakes has become an increasing problem for many bodies of water. By analyzing the nutrients available and the phytoplankton and macrophyte populations, evaluation and differentiation of East Gemini Lake and Stumpf Lake were made concerning their trophic state. This determination allowed for the further understanding of the effect the trophic state has on the flora of an aquatic system. It was determined that East Gemini Lake was eutrophic based on its available nutrients and phytoplankton populations. In contrast, Stumpf Lake was determined to be mesotrophic having lower available nutrients and less phytoplankton population density with fewer major phytoplnakton …

Building A Continuous Wave Titanium Sapphire Laser, Sean Mcclain Jan 1995

Building A Continuous Wave Titanium Sapphire Laser, Sean Mcclain

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

In fulfilling the requirement of a senior thesis, I have constructed and optimized a continuous wave (cw) titanium sapphire laser, loosely based on the designs of other experimenters. A maximum output power of 500 mw at 23. nm was obtained after trying several cavity configurations. The beam characteristics, including wavelength, beam width, power and position stability were found to be sensitively dependent on the pump power, supplied by an argon ion laser.

Numeric Transmission/Cultural Transition, Paul B. Pekarek Jan 1995

Numeric Transmission/Cultural Transition, Paul B. Pekarek

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

This thesis is a study of the computational methods and common use of mathematics during the Middle Ages. It also discusses the cultural transition that was associated with the numeric transition from the Roman numeral system to the Hindu-Arabic numeral system and the numeric systems' corresponding calculation methods in Christian Europe during the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance. I claim that the transition from Roman numerals to Hindu-Arabic numerals was a result of cultural influences. Furthermore, I show that the transition was steady and found its basis in preexisting forms of calculation. I also look at the influences that …

Water Runoff Monitoring In Arid Areas Using Integrated Remote Sensing And Gis Techniques, G. G. Lemoine, Anatoly A. Gitelson, E. Adar, J. G.M. Bakker

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Our paper discusses the proposed methodology for the implementation of a monitoring tool for surface water run-off in (semi-)arid areas. This tool is being developed as part of a two year multi-disciplinary shared cost project supported by the European Union AVICENNE initiative. The tool aims at supporting decision making and planning in water run-off management for sustainable development of water resources for human settlement and regeneration of desertification-prone areas in the arid climate zone.

The initial phase of the project (1995) consists of the testing of various remote sensing products for DTM generation and surface characterization. Both SPOT stereo pairs …

Reflectance In The Red And Near Infra-Red Ranges Of The Spectrum As Tool For Remote Chlorophyll Estimation In Inland Waters: Lake Kinneret Case Study, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Yosef Z. Yacobi Jan 1995

Reflectance In The Red And Near Infra-Red Ranges Of The Spectrum As Tool For Remote Chlorophyll Estimation In Inland Waters: Lake Kinneret Case Study, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Yosef Z. Yacobi

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Signature analysis of reflectance spectra was used for the selection of the most suitable spectral bands for remote sensing of chlorophyll in inland waters. The parameters of the reflectance peak near 700 nm were employed for construction of algorithms for chlorophyll determination. The best model, validated by independent data sets, enabled estimation of chlorophyll concentration with an error < 0.6 mg/m3 for period of low Chl concentration and < 6.5 mg/m3 for period of the phytoplankton bloom. For the purpose of chlorophyll mapping in Lake Kinneret, the use of three relatively narrow spectral bands was sufficient. Radiometric data were also used to simulate radiances …

Remote Sensing Of Chlorophyll In Lake Kinneret Using Highspectral- Resolution Radiometer And Landsat Tm: Spectral Features Of Reflectance And Algorithm Development, Yosef Z. Yacobi, Anatoly Giltelson, Meir Mayo

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

High-resolution reflectance spectra in the range of 400-850 nm were obtained from Lake Kinneret during a period when dense populations of the dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense dominated the phytoplankton. Chlorophyll (ChI) concentrations ranged from 5.1 to 185 mg m-3 and from 2.4 to 187.5 mg m-3 in the samples of two independent experiments. The most prominent features of the reflectance spectra were: (i) a wide minimum from 400 to 500 nm; (ii) a maximum at 550-570 nm, which did not surpass 3% in samples with high ChI concentration (>20 mg m-3), indicating a strong absorption by …

Seasonal Land-Cover Regions Of The United States, Thomas R. Loveland, James W. Merchant, Jesslyn F. Brown, Donald O. Ohlen, Bradley C. Reed, Paul Olson, John Hutchinson

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Research on global change has been hindered by deficiencies in the availability Wand quality of land-cover data (Mather and Sdasyuk 1991; Townshend 1992). To address this deficiency, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the University of Nebraska- Lincoln have collaborated in developing a method of land-cover characterization that is suitable for research on global change and on regional patterns of land cover (Loveland et al. 1991; Brown et al. 1993). This methodology is based upon statistical analysis of multidate, meteorological satellite imagery acquired by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Advanced Very High Reso- lution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensor complemented …

Organic Facies And Maturation Of Jurassic/Cretaceous Rocks, And Possible Oil-Source Rock Correlation Based On Pyrolysis Of Asphaltenes, Scotian Basin, Canada, Prasanta K. Mukhopadhyay, John A. Wade, Michael A. Kruge

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper establishes source rock characterization and oil-oil and oil-source rock correlations of selected organic-rich shale source rocks and selected light oils and condensates from Jurassic and Cretaceous formations of the Scotian Basin. Multiple source rocks of Kerogen Types IIA (oil-prone), IIA-IIB (oil- and condensate-prone), IIB (condensate and gas prone), III (gas-prone), and IV (nonsource) are identified in various stratigraphic horizons. Vitrinite reflectance and Tmax data indicate variable maturation histories, in different parts of the basin, which are related to differences in lithology-related heat conductivity and the presence of older sediments closer to areas of rifting. Multiple linear regression …

The Genus 22 Crossing Number Of K9, Adrian Riskin Jan 1995

The Genus 22 Crossing Number Of K9, Adrian Riskin

Mathematics

Our main result is that a 1971 conjecture due to Paul Kainen is false. Kainen's conjecture implies that the genus 2 crossing number of K 9 is 3. We disprove the conjecture by showing that the actual value is 4. The method used is a new one in the study of crossing numbers, involving proof of the impossibility of certain genus 2 embeddings of Ks.

Brain State In A Convex Body, S. Hui, Martin Bohner Jan 1995

Brain State In A Convex Body, S. Hui, Martin Bohner

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study a generalization of the brain-state-in-a-box (BSB) model for a class of nonlinear discrete dynamical systems where we allow the states of the system to lie in an arbitrary convex body. The states of the classical BSB model are restricted to lie in a hypercube. Characterizations of equilibrium points of the system are given using the support function of a convex body. Also, sufficient conditions for a point to be a stable equilibrium point are investigated. Finally, we study the system in polytopes. The results in this special case are more precise and have simpler forms than the corresponding …
