Visual Programming Languages and Visual Programming Tools incorporate non-procedural coding mechanisms that may duplicate, or perhaps even conflict with, the analysis and design mechanisms promulgated by the mainstream Software Engineering methodologies. By better understanding such duplication and conflict, software engineers can take proactive measures to accommodate and, ideally, eliminate them. Better still, there may be opportunities for synergy that can be exploited if one is looking for them.

The Raman spectrum of graphitic amorphous carbon (g-C) is modeled with simple classical methods, using rings as medium-range structural units. g-C provides a simple [nearly two dimensional (2D) with a single type of atom and one dominant bond type] prototypic example of a large class of continuous random network (CRN) solids where ring or cluster vibrations cannot be decoupled from the network in which they are embedded. We determined the in-plane vibrational modes of n=4, 5, 6, 7, and 8-membered symmetric, planar carbon rings using bond-stretching and bond-angle bending force constants; an additional force constant couples each ring node to …

A Correlative Comparison Of The Ring Current And Auroral Electrojets Using Geomagnetic Indices, W. B. Cade Iii, Jan Josef Sojka, Lie Zhu

From a study of the 21 largest geomagnetic storms during solar cycle 21, a strong correlation is established between the ring current index Dst and the time-weighted accumulation of the 1-hour auroral electrojet indices, AE and AL. The time-weighted accumulation corresponds to convolution of the auroral electrojet indices with an exponential weighting function with an e-folding time of 9.4 hours. The weighted indices AEw and ALw have correlation coefficients against Dst ranging between 0.8 and 0.95 for 20 of the 21 storms. Plasmaspheric densities have been observed previously to be higher in December than in June, with the ratio varying between 1.5 and 3.0 and with larger variations at lower L shells. In order to search for the cause of the observed annual variations, we have modeled plasmaspheric density, using a time-dependent hydrodynamic model. On an L = 2 field line with geomagnetic longitude equal to 300°, the modeled plasmaspheric densities were a factor of 1.5 times higher in December than in June. The modeled December to June density ratio was found to increase slightly with L shell, in contrast to observations; …

We describe a parameterized ionospheric model (PIM), a global model of theoretical ionospheric climatology based on diurnally reproducible runs of four physics based numerical models of the ionosphere. The four numerical models, taken together, cover the E and F layers for all latitudes, longitudes, and local times. PIM consists of a semianalytic representation of diurnally reproducible runs of these models for low, moderate, and high levels of both solar and geomagnetic activity and for June and December solstice and March equinox conditions. A natural generalized symmetry of the Yang–Mills equations is defined as an infinitesimal transformation of the Yang–Mills field, built in a local, gauge invariant, and Poincaré invariant fashion from the Yang–Mills field strength and its derivatives to any order, which maps solutions of the field equations to other solutions. On the jet bundle of Yang–Mills connections a spinorial coordinate system is introduced that is adapted to the solution subspace defined by the Yang–Mills equations. Relationships between hydrologic variables are often nonlinear. Usually the functional form of such a relationship is not known a priori. A multivariate, nonparametric regression methodology is provided here for approximating the underlying regression function using locally veighted polynomials. Locally weighted polynomials consider the approximation of the target function through a Taylor series expansion of the function in the neighborhood of the point of estimate. Cross validatory procedures for the selection of the size of the neighborhood over which this approximation should take place, and for the order of the local polynomial to use are provided and shown for some simple …

This paper suggests solutions for a longstanding problem in managing lodgepole pine forests -- that of managing individual stands to reach their planned rotation age, despite serious hazard from bark beetles and wildfire. The management regimes presented yield merchantable thinning products. The 80-year sawtimber rotation can be achieved using these management recommendations. Thinning at 30 years of age is central to achieving the recommended alternative management regimes. The authors suggest that agencies give roundwood operators a portion of the thinning stemwood as payment. Due to their presence in rocks of the basin, much effort has been put into assessing and exploiting uranium, phosphate, gold, copper, coal, and evaporite minerals. However, the basin is probably best noted for its extensive and very rich accumulations of hydrocarbons such as, oil, gas, bituminous sandstones, oil shale (shale oil), and gilsonite and other solid and semi-solid hydrocarbon species. A modelling effort using POP-II software was presented to show the effects of altering the harvest structure of the reduction. The relatively high harvests of the last two years may result in maintaining the current Park population levels. A variety of scenarios increasing the number and proportion of cows harvested show the greater effects cow harvests have on reducing the population relative to bull harvests.

This document is the final technical report of cultural resources investigations in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, southeastern Utah. These investigations were part of the multiyear Canyonlands Archeological Project. Inventory of 878 acres in the Squaw Butte Area revealed 80 sites which were occupied by Archaic people during all phases of the Archaic period, aborigines of unknown cultural affiliation during the Early Formative period, Mesa Verde Anasazi during Pueblo III or late Pueblo II-III, and the Navajo during historic or modern times. American Oil and Gas Corporation (American), also doing business as Martens and Peck Operating, proposes a coal bed methane (CBM) project called the Lighthouse project near Gillette, Wyoming in central Campbell County just south of the Marquiss CBM project. Wells drilled in the project area would be from intermingled private, state, and federal oil and gas properties. At full production, American hopes to produce methane gas from a maximum of 200 wells completed in the Wyodak coal seam in the Lighthouse project area. Of the 200 wells, 100 would produce federally owned methane gas.

Cretaceous And Paleogene Manganese-Encrusted Hardgrounds From Central Pacific Guyots, David K. Watkins, Isabella Premoli Silva, Elisabetta Erba

Manganese-encrusted hardgrounds and associated sediments from four guyots in the western Pacific Ocean were investigated using lithostratigraphic and biostratigraphic examination of thin sections. Biostratigraphic data from manganese-encrusted hardgrounds constrain the age of platform drowning to early middle Eocene for Limalok Guyot, latest Maastrichtian to early Paleocene for Wodejebato Guyot, and middle late Albian for MIT Guyot. Microstratigraphic examination of the hardgrounds reveals a complex Cretaceous and Paleogene history of bioerosion, pelagic sediment accumulation, manganese encrustation, and phosphatization. Fourteen distinct episodes of pelagic sediment accumulation occurred, with five in the Cretaceous, three in the Paleocene, and seven in the Eocene. These …

International research collaborations will be using accelerators in the U.S. and Europe to produce and detect t5 phase transition in high-density nuclear matter called the Quark-Gluon Plasma, formed in collisions between pairs of A=200 nuclei, for projectiles with kinetic energies large compared to their rest mass energies. Each collaboration will use time projection chambers (TPC) to track thousands ofsecondary charged particles formed in the aftermath ofeach central primary collision. Creating and optimizing TPC tracking software is difficultinsuch a high multiplicity environment, particularly for particles with a low momentum (below 300 MeV/C).
