εm is a high-level programming system which puts parallelism within the reach of scientists who are not sophisticated programmers. εm both restricts and simplifies the programming interface, and thereby eases both the conceptual task of the programmer and the analytical task of the compiler. The εm compiler performs automatic data structure definition, scheduling and data partitioning. This document presents the automatic data partitioning algorithm used in εm.

Free-Boundary Problems For Potential And Stokes Flows Via Nonsmooth Analysis, Srdjan Stojanovic, Tom Svobodny

A new approach to some free boundary problems of the type of jets and cavities for potential flows is introduced. Both potential and Stokes flows are considered. The variable domain problems are relaxed so that they become nonsmooth optimization problems on fixed domains for somewhat singular state equations. State equations are considered, and multivalued generalized gradients of the variational functionals are studied. The method is constructive.

We present optical photometry for the type Ia SN 1994D in NGC 4526 from 1994 March 7 to June 4 starting 13 days before B-band maximum. The light curves of this SN resemble closely those of the "normal" type Ia events SNe 1989B and 1980N, differing only in a slightly faster decline after maximum in VRI. The optical absolute magnitudes of SN 1994D, however, are significantly brighter than those of its near twins, and brighter than those predicted by Phillips' [ApJ, 413, L105 (1993)] relationship between decline rate and luminosity. Weak quasistatic singularities are evidenced within the Griffiths regime of temperatures Tc(x)≤T≤Tc(x=0) in the diluted antiferromagnet Fe1-xZnxF2, x=0.53, and in the diluted ferromagnet K2Cu1-xZnxF4, x=0.2, by measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, χ’ vs T, in zero external field. Significant deviations from classical (γ=1, for Fe0.47Zn0.53F2) and nonclassical (γ≳1, for K2Cu0.8Zn0.2F4) Curie-Weiss-type behavior, χ’∝[T-Tc(x)] -Y, are found just below Tc(x=0) by using linear-regression data …

This paper examines the interaction of an axisymmetric vortex monopole, such as a Lamb vortex, with a background irrotational flow. At leading order, the monopole is advected with the background flow velocity at the center of vorticity. However, inhomogeneities of the flow will cause the monopole to distort. It is shown that a shear‐diffusion mechanism, familiar from the study of mixing of passive scalars, plays an important role in the evolution of the vorticity distribution. Through this mechanism, nonaxisymmetric vorticity perturbations which do not shift the center of vorticity are homogenized along streamlines on a Re1/3 time scale, much faster …

Ultrathin Gd films have been studied with constant initial-state spectroscopy (CIS) of photoemission utilizing linearly polarized light of synchrotron radiation. The photoemission cross section of the 5d surface state near EF shows strong photon energy dependence, i.e., sharp peaks in CIS spectra near the Gd 5p1/2 absorption edge. These peaks originate from resonant photoemission processes involving the occupied 5p and unoccupied 5d levels of the surface atoms. The symmetry of the unoccupied states were determined experimentally by changing the polarization of light, where pp-polarized light excites only to the unoccupied dz2 …

Closo-1,2-dicarbadodecaborane (C2B10H12) is a source compound found to be suitable for the deposition of a high resistivity form of boron-carbide (B5C), and the fabrication of boron-rich semiconductor devices. A scanning tunneling microscope (STM) was used to image these molecular icosahedra on Si(111)-(7x7). Molecular decomposition (tip induced and otherwise! produced a boron-carbide/silicon interface with pronounced heterojunction electronic characteristics. In STM, this interface is characterized by a disordering of the Si(111)-(7x7) reconstruction. We suggest, based on Auger electron spectroscopy data and low-energy electron diffraction observations, that boron atoms from the dissociated source molecules …

We have utilized Ginzberg-Landau mean field theory to analyze the branching ratio and soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements of the L3 and L2 adsorption edges of thin Mn overlayers on ferromagnetic fcc Co(001) at room temperature. We have determined a short range magnetic correlation of 4.25Å and that the long range magnetic order has a decay length of 1.29Å. These results indicate that the first monolayer of Mn ferromagnetically couple with the Co substrate. The paramagnetic Mn layer exhibits short range magnetic order, but lacks long range magnetic order. Due to the exponential decrease of both the …

Visible Luminescence From Single Crystal‐Silicon Quantum Wells, Peter N. Saeta, A. C. Gallagher

Single crystal‐silicon quantum wells with SiO2 barriers have been grown from SIMOX silicon‐on‐insulator substrates. Photoluminescence in the red and near‐infrared is observed for average well width <8 >nm, with peak signal for 2‐nm average width. The luminescence spectrum is independent of well width for SiO2 barriers, but shifts 0.3 eV to higher energy upon removal of the upper oxide layer with HF. Both results suggest the importance of radiation from surface states.

The design of a VLSI circuit consists of a description of the circuit in terms of its components and subcomponents, at various levels of detail. To verify that the layout of a VLSI circuit conforms to its design, one needs to work backwards from the lowest-level description of the circuit and recognize the higher-level components it constitutes. This paper is concerned with the application of logic programming techniques in the formal verification of the structural correctness of the VLSI circuit layouts. Electrical Field Enhanced Thermal Quenching Of A Prominent Thermally Stimulated Current Peak In Semi-Insulating Gaas, Z-Q. Fang, David C. Look

Detailed experimental results are presented for a ‘‘thermal quenching’’ of thermal stimulated current signals in the most prominent trap in undoped semi‐insulating (SI) GaAs, T5 with an activation energy of 0.27–0.31 eV. A possible model for the thermal quenching of T5 is discussed, emphasizing the thermally stimulated nature of the quenching process, the effect of electric field and the formation of high‐field domains. The thermal quenching of T5 can frequency be observed in SI GaAs grown by the vertical gradient freeze (VGF) technique, or by the liquid encapsulated Czochralski (LEC) technique under certain conditions.

Few information retrieval systems are designed with children’s special needs and capabilities in mind. We need to learn more about children’s information-seeking behavior in order to provide them with information-based tools which support exploratory learning. This dissertation examines children’s search behavior on a hypertext-based automated library catalog designed for elementary school children. The focus of this research is on the effect of domain knowledge on children’s search performance, search behavior, and learning as they look for science books on this system. We have measured and calculated doubly differential single ionization cross sections as a function of the scattering angle and the projectile energy loss for 50 to 150 keV proton-helium collisions. These cross sections show unexpected structures as a function of both the energy loss and the scattering angle, which are interpreted as due to the postcollision interaction. Although the effects of postcollision interactions have previously been observed in electron spectra, this is the first observation of such effects for the scattered protons.

The Quaternary Geology Of The Eastern Side Of The Greys River Valley And The Neotectonics Of The Greys River Fault In Western Wyoming, L. C. Allen Jones

The Greys River fault is the easternmost active normal fault associated with Basin and Range extension in the lntermountain seismic belt. It is a north-south trending normal fault, located in the Sevier-age fold and thrust belt of western Wyoming, and bounds the west side of the Wyoming Range. The fault is at least 54 km long, and juxtaposes Permo-Pennsylvanian Wells Formation against various Triassic formations. Throw ranges from 100-1000 m. Seismic reflection data suggest that the Greys River fault is a listric normal fault that soles into the Darby thrust at depth. The fault offsets late Quaternary deposits on the …

I evaluated some of the factors affecting livestock distribution by conducting experimental (Chapters II and III) and observational (Chapter IV) studies. In Chapter II, I described the effect of locations of familiar foods and social interactions on choice of feeding location by lambs. Lambs were exposed to a pasture as subgroups of strangers and companions with different dietary habits (i.e., three lambs that preferred milo with three lambs that preferred wheat). Milo was placed on one end and wheat on the other, about 100 m apart. Strangers typically fed in different locations, reflecting dietary preferences. Conversely, companions fed in both …

Although the American marten (Martes americana) generally is recognized as an obligate late-seral species, the factors dictating this association are poorly understood. Martens were studied in Newfoundland, Yellowstone National Park, and in a captive setting. As expected, use of habitat types was not proportional to availability P < 0.001). Defoliated and late-seral conifer stands were used more than expected, while all other types indicated expected or less than expected use. Habitat selection by martens was detectable at spatial scales greater than 80 m (P < 0.001).

Newfoundland martens were radio-collared and monitored for diet activity during the winters of 1990 and 1991. A regression of the percent active fixes on temperature had a negative slope (b = -4.45, P = 0.084, n = 12), indicating that martens did not minimize their exposure to low temperatures. Biomass, tiller numbers, flowering, and genet survival were accessed for the rhizomatous Elymus lanceolatus ssp. lanceolatus and caespitose E. l. ssp. wawawaiensis growing in mixtures with a range of densities of each taxon. Models of aboveground biomass of each taxon as a function of mixed densities were used to calculate competition indices. Tiller numbers and biomass of ssp. lanceolatus were higher than those of the caespitose taxon in the first year, but declined in the second year, while biomass and tiller numbers of ssp. wawawaiensis changed little. All tillers of ssp. wawawaiensis emerged in autumn; tillers of ssp. …

The extinction efficiency for the interaction of a plane wave with a large nonabsorbing spherical particle is approximately 2.0. When a Gaussian beam of half-width w(0) is incident upon a spherical particle of radius a with w(o)/a < 1, the extinction efficiency attains unexpectedly high or low values, contrary to intuitive expectations. The reason for this is associated with the so-called compensating term in the scattered field, which cancels the field of the Gaussian beam behind the particle, thereby producing the particle's shadow. I introduce a decomposition of the total exterior field into incoming and outgoing portions that are free of compensating terms. It is then shown that a suitably defined interaction efficiency has the intuitively expected asymptotic values of 2.0 for w(o)/a >> 1 and 1.0 for w(o)/a << 1.
