Fine-Structure Effect For (E,2e) Collisions, Don H. Madison, V. D. Kravtsov, Stephenie J. Jones, Robert P. Mceachran

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

For the case of inelastic electron-atom scattering, it has been known for some time that significant spin effects may be observed even if spin-dependent forces on the projectile can be ignored. These spin effects result from the Pauli principle and this phenomenon has become known as the fine-structure effect. Recently, the question of whether or not these same types of effects should be observed for atomic ionization has been considered and the initial indications are that significant spin asymmetries can also be expected for atomic ionization if the final ion satisfies LS coupling and the final J state of the …

We report the generation of short-wavelength, high-order harmonics of intense laser radiation from atom clusters. Clusters containing about 103 atoms are produced in a high-pressure gas jet. We show them to be a unique nonlinear medium. Compared with monomer gases they yield a higher appearance intensity for a given harmonic order, stronger nonlinear dependence of harmonic signal on laser intensity, higher-order harmonics, and reduced saturation of the harmonic signal at high laser intensity.

Effects Of Coherent Coupling Of Autoionizing States On Multiphoton Ionization, N. E. Karapanagioti, D. Charalambidis, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal, C. Fotakis, H. Bachau, I. Sanchez, E. Cormier

C.J.G.J. Uiterwaal Publications

We present the experimental and theoretical investigation of the effects of the strong electromagnetic coupling of two autoionizing states (AIS’s) on the photoionization properties of an atomic system. These effects are observed by probing the ladder system from the ground state of the atom through a weak two-photon transition to the region of the lower AIS. The experimental observation of the modification of the total ionization and partial photoelectron spectra at different wavelengths of the coupling and probe lasers are accurately reproduced by a theoretical analysis which uses a density-matrix approach. Both theory and experiment indicate a strong inhibition of …

A Spin Reorientation In Pr₂Fe₁₇D₃ As Revealed By Mössbauer Spectroscopy, Fernande Grandjean, Dimitri Hautot, Gary J. Long, Olivier Isnard, Salvatore Miraglia, Daniel Fruchart

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Mössbauer effect spectra of Pr2Fe17D3, which have been measured between 85 and 295 K, indicate the presence of a spin reorientation of the iron magnetic moments at 105±5 K. At this magnetic transition a large increase of ~50 kOe in the 6c iron magnetic hyperfine field and abrupt changes in all of the remaining hyperfine fields are observed. A study of the changes in the quadrupole shifts at the transition indicates that this spin reorientation takes place within the basal plane of this rhombohedral compound. As expected, the temperature dependence of the isomer …

An Electroabsorption Study Of Porous Silicon, Melanie Fewings Apr 1996

An Electroabsorption Study Of Porous Silicon, Melanie Fewings

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

Bulk silicon is an indirect band gap material. When carriers are injected into bulk silicon, electron-hole recombination takes place thermally via phonon exchange, and not by emission of photons. Porous silicon, on the other hand, is a fairly efficient emitter of light in the visible region. Much research is currently under way to find out what makes porous silicon able to emit light. One main theory suggests that the energy bands of bulk silicon may be "squeezed" by being quantum confined, and porous silicon is just an array of quantum silicon wires. Another possibility is that defects in the huge …

ISTEA significantly changed the law governing metropolitan transportation planning. In response to the changes introduced by ISTEA, FHWA and FTA issued revised planning regulations on October 28, 1993, setting new requirements for the transportation planning processes. The requirements are presented in 23 CFR Part 450 and 49 CFR Part 613, Statewide and Metropolitan Planning Final Rule. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (CAAA) also imposed rigorous new transportation planning requirements in metropolitan areas, particularly those that are designated nonattainment or maintenance areas for air quality. In support of the implementation of the revised regulations, FHW A and FTA jointly …

Critical Behavior Of A Quantum Spherical Model In A Random Field, Thomas Vojta, Michael Schreiber Apr 1996

Critical Behavior Of A Quantum Spherical Model In A Random Field, Thomas Vojta, Michael Schreiber

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider the influence of a quenched random field on the critical behavior of a quantum spherical model at the zero-temperature quantum phase transition. We find a complete solution of the model for arbitrary translationally invariant pair interactions. It turns out that the critical behavior for zero as well as finite temperatures is dominated by static random field fluctuations rather than by quantum or thermal fluctuations. Therefore the critical behavior close to the zero-temperature quantum phase transition is identical to that close to a finite-temperature transition. The system does not show a crossover from quantum to classical behavior.

Litigation Outcomes In State And Federal Courts: A Statistical Portrait, Theodore Eisenberg, John Goerdt, Brian Ostrom, David Rottman

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

"U.S. Juries Grow Tougher on Plaintiffs in Lawsuits," the New York Times page-one headline reads. The story details how, in 1992, plaintiffs won 52 percent of the personal injury cases decided by jury verdicts, a decline from the 63 percent plaintiff success rate in 1989. The sound-byte explanations follow, including the notion that juries have learned that they, as part of the general population, ultimately pay the costs of high verdicts. Similar stories, reporting both increases and decreases in jury award levels, regularly make headlines. Jury Verdict Research, Inc. (JVR), a commercial service that sells case outcome information, often is …

Study Of Volcanic Sediments By Microbeam-Pixe Technique, Nazrul I. Khandaker, M. Ahmed, M. A. Garwan

Publications and Research

Single mineral grains in a suite of Cretaceous (85–90 Ma) volcanic sedimentary rocks were analyzed using the microbeam-PIXE technique to understand fundamental geological processes responsible for micro-scale variation in elemental composition across mineral zones, twinning, cleavage planes, fractures and grain boundaries. Distributions of major and trace elements show distinct geochemical features indicative of a specific geological setting and a subsequent diagenetic process in these volcanic sediments. Examples of mineral zoning, microstructures of variable chemistry and post-depositional fluid flow are discussed using the data on feldspar group of minerals.

Ionization Of Rydberg Wave Packets By Subpicosecond, Half-Cycle Electromagnetic Pulses, C. Raman, C. W. S. Conover, C. I. Sukenik, P. H. Bucksbaum Apr 1996

Ionization Of Rydberg Wave Packets By Subpicosecond, Half-Cycle Electromagnetic Pulses, C. Raman, C. W. S. Conover, C. I. Sukenik, P. H. Bucksbaum

Physics Faculty Publications

We have studied the ionization of Rydberg wave packets by subpicosecond, nearly unipolar electromagnetic field pulses, in the regime where the duration of the electric field is less than the classical Kepler orbit time 2n3 for the wave packet. In contrast to the subpicosecond optical pulses, subpicosecond field pulses can ionize wave packets when the probability density near the inner turning point of the Kepler orbit is low. The transfer of energy from the electromagnetic field to essentially free electrons demonstrates that the pulses are substantially shorter than one field cycle. Such half-cycle pulses can track the wave packet throughout …

An Analysis Of Remediation Alternatives In An Attempt To Establish An Effective Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Soils Remediation Program At The Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Project (Ymp), Marc A. Gonzales

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

An analyses, of six (6) soil remediation alternatives was completed in attempt to establish an effective hydrocarbon-contaminated soils remediation program at the Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Program (YMP). The remediation alternatives analyzed included: no remediation, on-site incineration, off-site incineration, in-situ .bioremediation, ex-situ bioremediation, and excavation and disposal. Variables considered in the evaluation process included cost of contaminated soil transportation, treatment costs, future liability, and success of remediating the contaminated soils to below regulatory thresholds. The analysis concluded in the recommendation of an on-site ex-situ bioremediation treatment facility (BTF) to remediate hydrocarbon-contaminated soils at the YMP. The selection was based on …

An Evaluation Of Methods To Determine The Thickness Of Free Product In A Shallow Water Table Aquifer, Ross B. Wagner Apr 1996

An Evaluation Of Methods To Determine The Thickness Of Free Product In A Shallow Water Table Aquifer, Ross B. Wagner

Masters Theses

Estimates of the volume of recoverable free phase petroleum product in soils are frequently based on poorly understood empirical methods. These methods, in the form of field tests and/or equations, require simplifying assumptions and apparent product thickness to calculate the thickness or specific volume of free phase product. The purpose of this study was to compare the available methods against each other to cross validate them.

The field methods evaluated at a well with an apparent product thickness of 1.69 feet were: Yaniga's bailer test, split-spoon soil sampling, a test pit excavation and a new tool developed for direct measurement …
