Hydrogeological Characterization Of The Akzo Salt Company, Williston Facility, Williston, North Dakota, Jane K. Geiger Jan 1996

Hydrogeological Characterization Of The Akzo Salt Company, Williston Facility, Williston, North Dakota, Jane K. Geiger

Theses and Dissertations

Operations at the Akzo Salt Company near Williston, ND, have resulted in saline contamination of the surface and subsurface in the general vicinity of the company property and possibly the surrounding area. The company site lies on the floodplain of Stony Creek and waste salt is buried just north of the plant. The salt dump poses surface and groundwater hazards. A recent flood on the plant site in August of 1993 resulted in groundwater corning into contact with buried salt. Groundwater quality and water level elevation data collected by the North Dakota Health Department, the North Dakota Geological Survey and …

Investigations Of Isolated Sand Shoals And Associated Deposits, Virginia Inner Shelf : Final Contract Report Primarily In The Form Of A Data Report, C. H. Hobbs Iii

Reports

This report primarily serves to present minimally interpreted data from a tight spaced set of high-resolution, seismic-reflection, sub-bottom profiles obtained during the summer of 1992. The profiles were run in the inner continental shelf adjacent to Virginia Beach, Virginia as part of an investigation of offshore sounds potentially usable in beach nourishment and hurricane protection projects along Virginia's Atlantic shore south of the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. Figure 1 depicts the general study area.

Berquist and Gomillion (1993) presented an interpretation of a small portion of the work. A larger, interpretive report (Hardaway et al., 1995) also utilizes information from …

Simple Approximation For Thermal Diffusion In Ionized Gas Mixtures, John D. Ramshaw Jan 1996

Simple Approximation For Thermal Diffusion In Ionized Gas Mixtures, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A simple approximation for thermal diffusion in gas mixtures was recently proposed [1]. This approximation was based upon relations valid for rigid spheres. It is therefore appropriate for molecules with steep repulsive potentials, but not for ionized species interacting via the Coulomb potential. Here we formulate an analogous approximation for ionized species and free electrons. The resulting thermal diffusion coefficients differ in sign from those for hard molecules.

Friction-Weighted Self-Consistent Effective Binary Diffusion Approximation, John D. Ramshaw, C. H. Chang Jan 1996

Friction-Weighted Self-Consistent Effective Binary Diffusion Approximation, John D. Ramshaw, C. H. Chang

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The self-consistent effective binary diffusion (SCEBD) approximation for multicomponent diffusion in gas mixtures is reconsidered and reformulated. The new formulation is based on the fact that a suitable rearrangement of the Stefan-Maxwell equations provides an exact expression for the complementary mean velocity ai for species i as a weighted average of the velocities of all the other species. The coefficients in ai are normalized friction coefficients which are simply related to the true binary diffusion coefficients. A simple factorized bilinear approximation to the friction coefficients then yields approximate species diffusion fluxes identical in form to those of a …

High-Temperature Thermopower Of And Related Systems, D. Marsh, Paul Ernest Parris Jan 1996

High-Temperature Thermopower Of And Related Systems, D. Marsh, Paul Ernest Parris

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate theoretically the high-temperature Seebeck coefficient in LaMnO3 and related transition-metal-oxide perovskites. Our analysis employs a model for small polaron conduction that takes into account the electronic structure of the 3d orbitals of B-site transition-metal cations, yielding expressions for systems in which conduction occurs through the eg transition-metal manifold. Limiting forms for the Seebeck coefficient as a function of carrier concentration and site degeneracy are identified for strong and weak Coulomb interactions between electrons on the same and neighboring sites. Results are applied to an analysis of experimental data for LaMnO3, the La1-xCa …

Leaner Environmental Policies For Agriculture, David E. Ervin, Elisabeth A. Graffy Jan 1996

Leaner Environmental Policies For Agriculture, David E. Ervin, Elisabeth A. Graffy

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Farmers and ranchers face a most troubling dilemma. Complex political forces have mapped two quite different paths to environmental management-a rollback of federal regulations or a buildup of traditional subsidies. In the words of a famous modern philosopher, "When you reach a fork in the road, take it!" But either choice poses risk for the industry and will not likely ameliorate nettlesome environmental problems. A third path could help the industry maintain competitiveness and meet environmental challenges. This path uses me latest science to identify agroenvironmental problems and emphasizes economically attractive technology to sustain environmental improvements.

Hierarchical Search Strategy For The Detection Of Gravitational Waves From Coalescing Binaries, Soumya Mohanty, S. Dhurandhar Jan 1996

Hierarchical Search Strategy For The Detection Of Gravitational Waves From Coalescing Binaries, Soumya Mohanty, S. Dhurandhar

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

The detection of gravitational waves from coalescing compact binaries would be a computationally intensive process if a single bank of template wave forms (i.e., a one-step search) is used. We present, in this paper, a method which leads to a large reduction in the computational power required as compared to a one-step search. This method is a hierarchical search strategy involving two template banks. We show that the computational power required by such a two-step search, for an on-line detection of the one-parameter family of Newtonian signals, is 18 of that required when an on-line one-step search is used. This …

Application Of Autoregressive Moving Average Linear Prediction Filters To The Characterization Of Solar Wind-Magnetosphere Coupling, Carter N. Borst Jan 1996

Application Of Autoregressive Moving Average Linear Prediction Filters To The Characterization Of Solar Wind-Magnetosphere Coupling, Carter N. Borst

Theses and Dissertations

Linear prediction filtering techniques have been used in studying the coupling processes between the solar wind and magnetosphere. The magnetosphere is a complex, dynamic system with at least two independent coupling methods for energy input, driven and unloading. Linear models were built and tested on the Bargatze data set, consisting of over 70 days of geomagnetic indices and solar wind data ordered in 34 intervals of increasing geomagnetic activity. Linear filtering techniques employing single-and multiple-input, autoregressive models predicted values of the magnetic index AL from solar wind data. The impulse response curves of the AL-coupling function groups showed amplitude peaks …

The Distributed Array Descriptor For A Pcrc Hpf Compiler Version 2.0 Sccs-770d, Bryan Carpenter, James Cowie, Donald Leskiw, Xiaoming Li Jan 1996

The Distributed Array Descriptor For A Pcrc Hpf Compiler Version 2.0 Sccs-770d, Bryan Carpenter, James Cowie, Donald Leskiw, Xiaoming Li

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We describe a distributed array descriptor that can be used by a runtime supporting HPFlike compilers. This descriptor captures all five types of alignment and BLOCK and CYCLIC distribution as defined in HPF specification. In essence, this descriptor does not distinguish whole array and array sections. Prior to this version, we had versions 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2. This version is not only an update of previous versions, but more importantly it also directly reflects our current practice in an HPF compilation effort.

A Review Of Commercial And Research Cluster Management Software, Mark Baker, Geoffrey C. Fox, Hon W. Yau Jan 1996

A Review Of Commercial And Research Cluster Management Software, Mark Baker, Geoffrey C. Fox, Hon W. Yau

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

In the past decade there has been a dramatic shift from mainframe or ‘host-centric’ computing to a distributed ‘client-server’ approach. In the next few years this trend is likely to continue with further shifts towards ‘network-centric’ computing becoming apparent. All these trends were set in motion by the invention of the mass-reproducible microprocessor by Ted Hoff of Intel some twenty-odd years ago. The present generation of RISC microprocessors are now more than a match for mainframes in terms of cost and performance. The long-foreseen day when collections of RISC microprocessors assembled together as a parallel computer could outperform the vector …

An Application Perspective On High-Performance Computing And Communications, Geoffrey C. Fox Jan 1996

An Application Perspective On High-Performance Computing And Communications, Geoffrey C. Fox

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We review possible and probable industrial applications of HPCC focusing on the software and hardware issues. Thirty-three separate categories are illustrated by detailed descriptions of five areas -- computational chemistry; Monte Carlo methods from physics to economics; manufacturing; and computational fluid dynamics; command and control; or crisis management; and multimedia services to client computers and settop boxes. The hardware varies from tightly-coupled parallel supercomputers to heterogeneous distributed systems. The software models span HPF and data parallelism, to distributed information systems and object/data flow parallelism on the Web. We find that in each case, it is reasonably clear that "HPCC works …

Snap, Crackle, Webwindows!, Geoffrey C. Fox, Wojtek Furmanski Jan 1996

Snap, Crackle, Webwindows!, Geoffrey C. Fox, Wojtek Furmanski

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We elaborate the SNAP---Scalable (ATM) Network and (PC) Platforms---view of computing in the year 2000. The World Wide Web will continue its rapid evolution, and in the future, applications will not be written for Windows NT/95 or UNIX, but rather for WebWindows with interfaces defined by the standards of Web servers and clients. This universal environment will support WebTop productivity tools, such as WebWord, WebLotus123, and WebNotes built in modular dynamic fashion, and undermining the business model for large software companies. We define a layered WebWindows software architecture in which applications are built on top of multi-use services. We discuss …

Exploration Of Emerging Hpcn Technologies For Web-Based Distributed Computing, Hon W. Yau, Alvin Leung, Wojtek Furmanski, Geoffrey C. Fox

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

The surge in the popularity of the World Wide Web (WWW) has corresponded to a decreasing market for specialised high performance computers. This paper discusses how, by making use of technology developed from the broader end of the computing pyramid, much of the past decade's work in distributed computing can be realised in the context of the larger WWW market. Not only do these new technologies offer fresh possibilities, but their pace of development is unlikely to be matched by the traditional high performance research community. A motivating application, discussions of the pertinent emerging technologies, and NPAC's investigations of them, …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

We have searched 960 square degrees of sky for radio pulsars, using the 305 m telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico. The 430 MHz survey reached a limiting sensitivity for slow pulsars of 0.7 mJy using a dual-polarization, 32 channel filter bank over 8 MHz of bandwidth. We have detected one new millisecond pulsar, 11 new slow pulsars, one previously known millisecond pulsar, and eight previously known slow pulsars. The new millisecond pulsar, PSR J2033 + 17, with a period of 5.9 ms, has been found to be in a binary system. The Keplerian circular orbital solution has a period of …

Variational Inverse Methods For Transport Problems, Zhaoqing Yang Jan 1996

Variational Inverse Methods For Transport Problems, Zhaoqing Yang

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Variational inverse data assimilation schemes are developed for three types of parameter identification problems in transport models: (1) the tracer inverse for the Lagrangian mean transport velocity in a long-term advection-diffusion transport model; (2) determination of inflow salinity open boundary condition in an intra-tidal salinity transport model; and (3) determination of settling velocity and resuspension rate for a cohesive sediment transport model. The gradient of the cost function with respect to the control variables is obtained by the adjoint model. A series of twin experiments are conducted to test the inverse models for the three types of problems. Results show …

Uniform Bottom Shear Stress And Equilibrium Hyposometry Of Intertidal Flats, Carl T. Friedrichs Jan 1996

Uniform Bottom Shear Stress And Equilibrium Hyposometry Of Intertidal Flats, Carl T. Friedrichs

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Hypsometry is the distribution of horizontal surface area with respect to elevation. Recent observations of tidal flat morphology have correlated convex hypsometry with large tide ranges, long‐term accretion and/or low wave activity. Concave hypsometry, in turn, has been correlated with small tide ranges, long‐term erosion and/or high wave activity. The present study demonstrates that this empirical variation in tidal flat hypsometry is consistent with a simple morphodynamic model which assumes tidal flats to be at equilibrium if maximum bottom shear stress (τ) is spatially uniform. Two general cases are considered: (i) dominance of τ by tidal currents, where τ is …

Development Of Quasi-Likelihood Techniques For The Analysis Of Pseudo-Proportional Data, Jennifer A. Elder Jan 1996

Development Of Quasi-Likelihood Techniques For The Analysis Of Pseudo-Proportional Data, Jennifer A. Elder

Theses and Dissertations

In certain experimental situations, the data observed are pseudo-proportional. By this, we observe the numerator, the number of responders, but the denominator, the total number, is random and, possibly, unobserved. In such situations, the data often exhibit "extra" variability due to the randomness of the denominator. Analysis of these data should account for this overdispersion. Several authors have proposed parametric approaches to this problem. Finney [Biometrika (1949) 36, 239-256] proposed the use of a mixture of the binomial and Poisson distributions. Anscombe [Annals of Applied Biology (1949) 36, 203-205] discussed the use of a mixture of the binomial and negative …

Factors Affecting Interannual Movements Of Snowy Plovers, Peter W. C. Paton, Thomas C. Edwards Jr. Jan 1996

Factors Affecting Interannual Movements Of Snowy Plovers, Peter W. C. Paton, Thomas C. Edwards Jr.

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

We studied the interannual movements of 361 individually color-banded adult Snowy Plovers (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus) at Great Salt Lake, Utah from 1990 to 1993. In northern Utah, Snowy Plovers nested in a dynamic environment; suitable breeding habitat declined by 50% at two study areas in four years. Male Snowy Plovers were more site faithful than females; 40% of males exhibited fidelity compared with 26% of females (P < 0.01). However, as the amount of available suitable nesting habitat declined, male site fidelity diminished, whereas female fidelity remained relatively constant. We found strong evidence that female site fidelity was affected by nesting success in the previous year. Females that nested unsuccessfully were less likely than successful females to exhibit site fidelity the following year; males did not exhibit this nest-success bias. In addition, unsuccessful females breeding at sites with high densities of nests tended to disperse the following year, whereas male site fidelity did not appear to be affected by either a study site's overall nesting success the previous year or a study site's nest density the previous year. Female avoidance of areas with high densities of nests may be an antipredator strategy. Snowy Plovers in northern Utah have biparental incubation duties, but only males care for broods. Familiarity with brood-rearing areas was one plausible explanation for male-biased fidelity. However, we could not eliminate an alternative hypothesis that both focal study sites represented scarce breeding areas due to the presence of freshwater, and male Snowy Plovers preferred to use the same areas rather than disperse. We propose that more landscape-level studies are needed to address questions concerning local and regional movement patterns.

Measuring Strangeness Production From Relativisitic Collisions Between Pairs Of Nuclei Using A Vertex Time Projection Chamber, Christine A. Byrd, Wilfred J. Braithwaite Jan 1996

Measuring Strangeness Production From Relativisitic Collisions Between Pairs Of Nuclei Using A Vertex Time Projection Chamber, Christine A. Byrd, Wilfred J. Braithwaite

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

At collider energies of 200A-GeV, tracking of charged particle pairs originating from neutrals is dominated by singlystrange KJ.' decays. Counting the number ofsecondary vertex pairs is a method of measuring the strangeness production. The VTX is a four-layer micro-strip gas time projection chamber being designed for use with the STAR instrument in an experiment using the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider under construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Simulated pixel data generated from CERN's Monte Carlo detector-modeling program Geant were put into tables using the TAS sorting structures available from the STAR Collaboration. The response of VTX was mapped for charged pion …
