The Multi-Monopole Equations For K\"Ahler Surfaces, James A. Bryan, Richard Wentworth Jan 1996

The Multi-Monopole Equations For K\"Ahler Surfaces, James A. Bryan, Richard Wentworth

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a natural generalization of the Seiberg-Witten equations having more than one Spinor field ("monopole") and to study the moduli space of solutions in the case of a K\"ahler surface. We find an explicit algebro-geometric construction of the moduli space. In the course of our construction, we prove an existence and uniqueness result for a generalization of the Kazdan-Warner equation.

In [4] a construction on topological groups was given. In this paper we generalize this costruction to more general topological groupoids and have a similar structure on the topological groupodis.

Operations With The Periodic Decimal Expansions, H. Ardahan Jan 1996

Operations With The Periodic Decimal Expansions, H. Ardahan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we prove the rules of direct addition and subtraction for the finite decimal expansions of fractions which are periodic. It has been shown that these rules are valid for the fractions which can be expanded as a periodic decimal with p figures in the period or have the mixed decimal part containing \nu non-periodic and p periodic figures. Also, it has been given a rule of multiplication for these periodic decimals by 10^{\nu}, \nu\in\Bbb N. Last of all, if a rational fraction has a period of length p, then it can be expressed by a decimal expansion, …

Finite Dimensional Attractors For A Class Of Semilinear Wave Equations, A. Eden, V. Kalantarov Jan 1996

Finite Dimensional Attractors For A Class Of Semilinear Wave Equations, A. Eden, V. Kalantarov

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper we give a self-contained survey of results related with the global attractors for a class of nonlinear wave equations with damping or viscosity terms. In particular, we prove the existence of a finite dimensional attractor and estimate its fractal dimension by imbedding it in an exponential attractor. Some results on global stability, existence of finite dimensional attractors were already partially discussed in Kalantarov [44] and in Eden et. al. [25], however we simplify the framework by introducing a unified approach to both the existence of attractors through \alpha-contractions and the construction of exponential attractors via some Lipschitzianity …

An Extension Of The Binomial Theorem With Application To Stability Theory, Z. Zahreddinea Jan 1996

An Extension Of The Binomial Theorem With Application To Stability Theory, Z. Zahreddinea

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We show how it is possible to put different stability types such as Routh-Hurwitz and Schur-Cohn on common grounds by establishing direct links between them. In the process, we obtain natural and elegant extensions of both Pascal's rule and the binomial theorem, which prove useful in establishing our main results. On A Differential Sequence In Geometry, E. Ortaçgi̇l

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We construct an exact differential sequence which indicates certain relations between curvature, local flatness, torsion and simplicity of higher order connections. Our formulas are expressed explicity in terms of the Christoffel symbols of dual \varepsilon-connections.

On Spaces Of Generalized Dirichlet Series, M. Dragilev Jan 1996

On Spaces Of Generalized Dirichlet Series, M. Dragilev

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

It is considered the relationship between spaces L_f(\lambda,\sigma) and subspaces of the space A_1(\bar{A}_1) of analytic functions in the open (closed) unit disc, generated by systems F(\alpha_nz), n\in N, if they constitute a basis in their closure.

Temporal And Spatial Patterns In Water Chemistry, Phytoplankton Biomass And Microcrustacea In Lake Joondalup And Beenyup Swamp, Western Australia, Kimberley Upton

Theses : Honours

Lake Joondalup is one of the largest remaining permanent lakes of the Swan Coastal Plain. Despite increasing urbanisation, it supports highly diverse terrestrial and riparian communities, and an abundant and diverse aquatic fauna. However, like other wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain, Lake Joondalup is increasingly threatened by eutrophication and degradation. The aims of this study were to describe the patterns in selected physical, chemical parameters, microcrustacean abundance and biomass of Daphnia carinata in Beenyup Swamp and the adjacent sections of Lake Joondalup; to identify the likely factors determining the patterns of phytoplankton biomass in these wetlands; and to suggest …

Conservative Motion Of Discrete, Hexahedral Gyroscope, Donald Greenspan Jan 1996

Conservative Motion Of Discrete, Hexahedral Gyroscope, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers

Gyroscopic motion is simulated by applying a molecular dynamics formulation to a rigid hexahedron. The conservative dynamical differential equations are solved numerically in such a fashion that all the system invariants are preserved. Examples which included precession, nutation, and a combination of looping and cusp formation are described and discussed.

Estimation And Abundances In Two-Component Mineral Mixtures Using Mid-Infrared Laser Reflectance Ratios, Ram M. Narayanan, Kristin K. Warner, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Jan 1996

Estimation And Abundances In Two-Component Mineral Mixtures Using Mid-Infrared Laser Reflectance Ratios, Ram M. Narayanan, Kristin K. Warner, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The mid-infrared spectral region (8-14 μm wavelength) is emerging as a viable geologic remote sensing tool due to the presence of reststrahlen bands for minerals such as silicates and carbonates. An experimental study was carried out to characterize the mid-infrared laser reflectance of mineral mixtures, and to explore the potential of laser remote sensing systems to estimate mineral abundances in two-component mixtures. An empirical model was developed to establish a relationship between laser reflectance ratios at judiciously selected wavelengths and percentage of one of the minerals in the mixture. It was found that the abundances can be estimated to within …

Describing The Elephant: Multiple Perspectives In New York City's Watershed Protection Conflict, Krystyna Anne Stave Jan 1996

Describing The Elephant: Multiple Perspectives In New York City's Watershed Protection Conflict, Krystyna Anne Stave

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications

New York City's efforts to avoid filtration mandated by the 1986 Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments and the 1989 Surface Water Treatment Rule have generated considerable controversy. Since the conflict began in 1990, a spectrum of stakeholder groups has emerged, representing land owners, sport fishermen, businesses, environmental groups, developers, and watershed communities. What was originally defined by New York City water supply managers as a scientific problem--identifying sources of water quality degradation and preventing contaminants from entering the water supply system--now has broadened to include a diverse set of social and economic issues as well.

Publications (WR)

The Nevada Basin and Range (NVBR) study unit of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program is investigating the status of, trends in, and factors affecting water quality in the Las Vegas area. A principal objective of the investigation is to assess the effects of urbanization on the quality of area water resources.

Las Vegas Wash is the surface-water outlet for the Las Vegas area. The wash transports stormwater runoff, shallow ground-water discharge, and tertiary-treated sewage effluent from the Las Vegas area to Las Vegas Bay of Lake Mead on the Colorado River. Most of the flow—about 96 …

An Inline Optical Electron Polarimeter, K. W. Trantham, Timothy J. Gay, R. J. Vandiver Jan 1996

An Inline Optical Electron Polarimeter, K. W. Trantham, Timothy J. Gay, R. J. Vandiver

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The design and operation of a simple inline optical electron polarimeter is presented. It is based on exchange excitation of ground state neon atoms. The electron polarization is determined from the degree of circular polarization of the subsequent 2p53p 3D3→2p53s 3P2 (6402 Å) fluorescence. This device can characterize both longitudinally and transversely polarized electron beams in a nondestructive fashion, and is inexpensive and easily constructed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

A technique for electron spectroscopy which yields full two-dimensional momentum distributions for continuum electrons has been used to study ejected electrons from single ionization of He by [Formula Presented] and proton projectiles at low velocities. Projectile velocities of 1.63, 1.38, and 1.16 a.u. for [Formula Presented] and 2.39, 1.71, 1.15,. 85, and 0.63 a.u. for protons were used. All spectra show much broader distributions along the beam than transverse to the beam. For the case of proton bombardment, the spectra are strongly influenced by both target and projectile potentials, maximizing near the velocity of the saddle in the potential between …

"Duel" Diligence: Second Thoughts About The Supremes As The Sultans Of Swing, Paul H. Edelman, Jim Chen Jan 1996

"Duel" Diligence: Second Thoughts About The Supremes As The Sultans Of Swing, Paul H. Edelman, Jim Chen

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

We respond to Professor Lynn A. Baker's criticisms of our article, The Most Dangerous Justice: The Supreme Court at the Bar of Mathematics. Professor Baker fundamentally misunderstands our measure of Supreme Court voting power. Moreover, she erroneously presumes that the "median Justice" wields the bulk of the Court's power. Even if there were a median Justice, it is far from clear whether he would be the Most Dangerous Justice. We conclude with a clarification of the median voter theorem and its implications for the distribution of voting power within the Supreme Court.

In this thesis, I shall study and compare various methods for manipulating two- and three-dimensional image data produced with a nuclear magnetic resonance scanner. In particular, I will examine ways of focusing upon specific structures internal to the object under study (segmentation); and will explore means of rendering realistic images of these structures on a computer screen using depth-cueing, shading, and ray-casting techniques.
The 3DHEAD volumetric dataset used for this project was created with the Siemens Magnetom and was provided courtesy of Siemens Medical Systems, Inc., Iselin, NJ. This dataset consists of 109 slices of a human head, with each …

Effects Of Daphnia Availability On Growth And Food Consumption Of Rainbow Trout In Two Utah Reservoirs, R. Tabor, Chris Luecke, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh Jan 1996

Effects Of Daphnia Availability On Growth And Food Consumption Of Rainbow Trout In Two Utah Reservoirs, R. Tabor, Chris Luecke, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

We monitored the diet and growth of stocked rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss in two Utah reservoirs during 1986 and 1989–1990. For the first month after stocking, juvenile rainbow trout in both reservoirs fed extensively on large Daphnia spp. In East Canyon Reservoir where Daphnia were abundant, this pattern continued throughout the summer, fall, and winter. Growth of rainbow trout in East Canyon Reservoir was generally good throughout 1989–1990. In Causey Reservoir, where Daphnia were less abundant and smaller, rainbow trout fed progressively less on smaller Daphnia throughout the summer, fall, and winter, while other prey items (snails, aquatic insects, and …

Simulated Growth And Production Of Endangered Snake River Sockeye Salmon: Assessing Management Strategies For The Nursery Lakes, Chris Luecke, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Phaedra E. Budy, H. P. Gross Jan 1996

Simulated Growth And Production Of Endangered Snake River Sockeye Salmon: Assessing Management Strategies For The Nursery Lakes, Chris Luecke, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Phaedra E. Budy, H. P. Gross

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

We examined the potential of employing a series of lake management strategies to enhance production of endangered Snake River sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in its historical nursery lakes in central Idaho. We used a combination of limnological sampling, experimentation, and simulation modeling to assess effects of lake fertilization and kokanee reduction on growth and survival of juvenile sockeye salmon. Juvenile sockeye salmon from a broodstock of this endangered species are being introduced into the lakes from 1995 to 1998. Results of our analyses indicated that several lakes were suitable for receiving broodstock progeny. Field experimentation and simulation modeling indicated that …

Comparison Of The Aquatic Ecology Of Side-Canyons And The Main Channel Of Lake Powell, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Kirsten L. Gallo Jan 1996

Comparison Of The Aquatic Ecology Of Side-Canyons And The Main Channel Of Lake Powell, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Kirsten L. Gallo

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

From 18-21 April 1996, students in a Utah State University class (Aquatic Ecology Laboratory; FW 560) measured limnological and fisheries characteristics in two side canyons (Halls Creek Bay and Moki Canyon) and the main channel of Lake Powell. Inclement weather precluded sampling of two other side canyons. Most of the sub-projects, directed by indiVIdual students, addressed the following two hypotheses: (1) productivity gradients existed from the inflows of the side canyons toward the main channel and; (2) productivity was higher in the side canyons than in the main channel of the lake. In most cases, parameters were measured at 3-5 …
