Hydrologic Factors Affecting The Discharge Of Ground Water In The Red River Of The North Basin, Northeastern North Dakota, Michael Lee Strobel Jan 1996

Hydrologic Factors Affecting The Discharge Of Ground Water In The Red River Of The North Basin, Northeastern North Dakota, Michael Lee Strobel

Theses and Dissertations

Ground-water discharge from bedrock aquifers contributes significant amounts of salinity to the Red River of the North. The area of major discharge is represented on the land surface by saline soils, wetlands, and flowing wells. As tributaries flow through these areas, the dissolved-solids concentrations in the streams increase. This salinity is then transported to the Red River of the North and northward to Canada. The bedrock units that supply the saline water are mainly the Dakota Group. Overlying the bedrock are sediments from numerous glacial advances and lacustrine sediments from glacial Lake Agassiz. These units form confining layers over the …

The Effects Of Non-Linear Bromide Adsorption On Apparent Macrodispersivity, Eron J. Dodak Jan 1996

The Effects Of Non-Linear Bromide Adsorption On Apparent Macrodispersivity, Eron J. Dodak

Theses and Dissertations

Macrodispersivity estimates are crucial in predicting the subsurface transport of contaminants. These predictions have become increasingly important as the number of contaminated sites continues to increase. In addition, the longevity of many contaminants can affect water quality over extended periods of time.

Anionic tracers such as bromide and chloride are commonly used as groundwater tracers in dispersivity experiments because they are inexpensive, easily detected, and are commonly believed to behave conservatively. It has been found, however, that anionic tracers do not always behave conservatively; sediments with a net positive surface charge can adsorb some-of the tracer.

A weakly non-linear, experimentally …

Hydrogeology And Recharge Of The Split Rock Creek Aquifer, Southeastern South Dakota, Stan F. Pence Jan 1996

Hydrogeology And Recharge Of The Split Rock Creek Aquifer, Southeastern South Dakota, Stan F. Pence

Theses and Dissertations

The rapid growth of the city of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has created a great demand for additional sources of ground water. Due to limited information on the buried, confined Split Rock Creek aquifer near Sioux Falls, a detailed hydrogeologic assessment of the aquifer was conducted to determine the mechanism of recharge to the aquifer.

A four-fold plan was earned out to gather the necessary data. . This plan involved determining the general hydrostratigraphy of the study area by reviewing available data and by drilling test holes where data were limited, collecting water-level data over an extended period, collecting water …

Mechanisms Of Pentachlorophenol Induced Charge Transport In Lipid Membranes, William Charles Brown Jan 1996

Mechanisms Of Pentachlorophenol Induced Charge Transport In Lipid Membranes, William Charles Brown

Dissertations and Theses

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is one of the prominent environmental pollutant that has penetrated into food chain and is present in humans. Health concerns have been raised since daily intake of PCP by the US population is estimated to be 16-19 µg. PCP facilitates dissipation of electrochemical potential gradients of hydrogen ions across energy transducing membranes, which are the energy sources for the conversion of adenosine diphosphate into adenosine triphosphate. Closely linked to these dissipative effects is the development of electrical conductivity in lipid membranes, induced by the presence of PCP. Three modes of PCP - induced membrane electrical conductivity were theoretically …

Preliminary Evaluation Of Water Quality In Tidal Creeks Of Virginia's Eastern Shore In Relation To Vegetable Cultivation, Mark W. Luckenbach, Morris H. Roberts Jr., Keith Boyd Jan 1996

Preliminary Evaluation Of Water Quality In Tidal Creeks Of Virginia's Eastern Shore In Relation To Vegetable Cultivation, Mark W. Luckenbach, Morris H. Roberts Jr., Keith Boyd

Reports

In response to concerns raised about the impacts of vegetable cultivation using plastic ground covers on water quality, we have initiated a broad-scale, systematic study of water quality in seaside tidal creeks of Virginia' s Eastern Shore. Our objective was to determine if acute toxicity associated with heavy metals or pesticides was more prevalent in tidal creeks with drainage areas which include this agricultural practice than in those which do not. Though such correlations do not confirm cause and effect, they may serve as the basis for future, more targeted investigations and for some immediate changes in land management practices …

Lipid Biomarker Composition Of Particulate Organic Matter In The Lower Chesapeake Bay : A Final Data Report, Elizabeth Canuel, Andrew Zimmerman, Shannon Burcham Jan 1996

Lipid Biomarker Composition Of Particulate Organic Matter In The Lower Chesapeake Bay : A Final Data Report, Elizabeth Canuel, Andrew Zimmerman, Shannon Burcham

Reports

In this report we present results from a sampling program designed to characterize the abundance, sources, and composition of particulate organic matter (POM) in the lower Chesapeake Bay. To meet these objectives, we used measurements of bulk parameters (total suspended solids, chlorophylls, particulate carbon and nitrogen concentrations) combined with information on the concentration of two classes of lipid biomarker compounds (fatty acids and sterols). In addition to providing baseline information on the sources and composition of POM important to the lower Bay, the study addressed spatial and temporal variations in organic matter quality. This was accomplished using an experimental design …

Analysis Of Temporal And Spatial Variations In Vegetation Communities For The Buxton Woods Region Of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Marcia Berman, Gene Silberhorn, Carl Hershner Jan 1996

Analysis Of Temporal And Spatial Variations In Vegetation Communities For The Buxton Woods Region Of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Marcia Berman, Gene Silberhorn, Carl Hershner

Reports

Residential development and growth along private lands bordering the southern portion of Cape Hatteras may be increasing at a rate inconsistent with the current water supply and demand. In the late 1960's and again in the late 1970's a series of wells were drilled to supply area residences and businesses with potable water from the local shallow water aquifer. Today, additional wells are being considered to serve the expanding community of Buxton Woods.

At the same time, the National Park Service maintains a series of ditches for both mosquito and flood control management. A large ditch which trends approximately northeast/southwest …

Effects Of Sand-Mining On Benthic Communities And Resource Value : Thimble Shoal, Lower Chesapeake Bay, Linda C. Schaffner, Michele A. Horvath, Carl H. Hobbs Iii Jan 1996

Effects Of Sand-Mining On Benthic Communities And Resource Value : Thimble Shoal, Lower Chesapeake Bay, Linda C. Schaffner, Michele A. Horvath, Carl H. Hobbs Iii

Reports

In August 1990 the City of Hampton placed approximately 276,000 cubic yards of sand from a designated borrow site on Thimble Shoal onto Buck:roe Beach for beach restoration. The Buck:roe reserve identified by Kimball et al. (1989) contains large quantities of beach quality material and is located less then 2.5 km offshore of Buck:roe Beach. In early 1989 a small section (330 m by 240 m) located in 5 m of water was delineated and permitted for dredging. This project represents the first instance of permitted, sand-mining activities for beach nourishment in the lower bay. Although the impacts of the …

Lion-Tailed Macaques (Macaca Silenus) In A Disturbed Forest Fragment: Activity Patterns And Time Budget, Shaily Menon, Frank Poirier Dec 1995

Lion-Tailed Macaques (Macaca Silenus) In A Disturbed Forest Fragment: Activity Patterns And Time Budget, Shaily Menon, Frank Poirier

Shaily Menon

We describe the activity patterns and time budget of a feral group of lion-tailed macaques that were confined to a disturbed forest fragment of 65 ha and compare the results with those obtained for groups in protected forests. The degraded nature of the study site was reflected in low tree densities, low specific diversity, gaps in the girth distribution of trees, and frequent disturbance by humans. The study group of 43 subjects was twice as large as lion-tailed macaque groups in protected habitats. They spent the most time ranging (34.0%), followed by foraging (23.7%), feeding (17.9%), resting (16.0%), and other …

Understanding Alpha Decay, Br Holstein Dec 1995

Understanding Alpha Decay, Br Holstein

Barry R Holstein

The subject of alpha decay is an important part of a course in modern physics, as it provides a clear experimental manifestation of the phenomenon of barrier penetration. The traditional approach, based on Gamow's complex eigenvalue method, raises a number of questions which can be answered by employing the older but less well-known procedure of summing over scattering states. Additional insights are gained by examination of the alpha decay system via more contemporary path integral based techniques.

In-Situ Imaging Of Ionic Crystal Dissolution Using An Integrated Electrochemical/Afm Probe, Julie V. Macpherson, Patrick R. Unwin, Andrew C. Hillier, Allen J. Bard Dec 1995

In-Situ Imaging Of Ionic Crystal Dissolution Using An Integrated Electrochemical/Afm Probe, Julie V. Macpherson, Patrick R. Unwin, Andrew C. Hillier, Allen J. Bard

Andrew C. Hillier

The kinetics and mechanism controlling dissolution from the (100) cleavage face of potassium bromide single crystals in acetonitrile solutions have been identified using a novel integrated electrochemical/AFM probe and a scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM). With both techniques, dissolution is induced by perturbing the dynamic dissolution/growth equilibrium at the crystal/solution interface through the electrochemical oxidation of bromide ions. SECM measurements demonstrate that the dissolution reaction is diffusion-limited under the experimental conditions, suggesting that the surface reaction is characterized by a rate constant in excess of 5 cm s-1 (assuming a first-order dissolution process). The topography of the dissolving surface has been …

An Almost Periodic Function Of Several Variables With No Local Minimum, Gregory S. Spradlin Dec 1995

An Almost Periodic Function Of Several Variables With No Local Minimum, Gregory S. Spradlin

Gregory S. Spradlin

An almost periodic function is a generalization of a periodic function. Almost periodic functions whose domain is the real numbers are well understood. The notion of almost periodic is easily generalized to higher-dimensional Euclidean space and even other topological groups. The properties of almost periodic functions on such other domains appear to be less well known. This paper proves that these properties may be very different. Specifically, an almost periodic function of two or more real variables need not have a local minimum (unlike an a.p. function of one variable).

Testing For Absolute Purchaing Power Parity, Douglas G. Steigerwald, Collin Crownover, John Pippenger Dec 1995

Testing For Absolute Purchaing Power Parity, Douglas G. Steigerwald, Collin Crownover, John Pippenger

Douglas G. Steigerwald

Purchasing power parity (PPP) is an equilibrium condition equating the nominal exchange rate between two countries with the relative price of an identical bundle of goods in each country. Previous time-series researchers use price indicies to study PPP, so they study relative PPP. We use new data that measures price levels, so we test absolute PPP. Price levels provide a test of absolute PPP because, unlike price indicies, do not contain a base period in which the nominal exchange rate equals the price ratio by construction. We find support for absolute PPP.

Measurement Of Double-Layer Forces At The Electrode/Electrolyte Interface Using The Atomic Force Microscope: Potential And Anion Dependent Interactions, Andrew C. Hillier, Sunghyun Kim, Allen J. Bard Dec 1995

Measurement Of Double-Layer Forces At The Electrode/Electrolyte Interface Using The Atomic Force Microscope: Potential And Anion Dependent Interactions, Andrew C. Hillier, Sunghyun Kim, Allen J. Bard

Andrew C. Hillier

The forces between a silica probe and silica and gold substrates were measured with an atomic force microscope in the presence of a series of alkali-halide electrolyte solutions. The interaction between two silica surfaces was repulsive and could be accurately predicted by Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory. The silica surface was negatively charged at a pH of 5.5 and the effective surface potential increased in magnitude with decreasing electrolyte concentration. In contrast, the force between the silica probe and a gold substrate was attractive at open circuit. This interaction was a strong function of the potential applied to the gold and the nature …
