Seagrass In Tampa Bay: Historic Trends And Future Expectations, J.O. R. Johansson, T. Ries Sep 1996

Seagrass In Tampa Bay: Historic Trends And Future Expectations, J.O. R. Johansson, T. Ries

Reports

In this bay segment, seagrass cover has increased from near zero in 1984 to about 40 ha in 1996. The seagrass expansion apparently started in response to water quality improvements which occurred more than a decade ago and which in turn followed a large reduction in nitrogen loading form primarily domestic and industrial point-sources. Although this nutrient reduction occurred almost two decades ago it is most likely still contributes to the current seagrass expansion.

A new, sensitive method allows one to search for the enhancement of events with nearly equal-sized fragments as predicted by theoretical calculations based on volume or surface instabilities. Simulations have been performed to investigate the sensitivity of the procedure. Experimentally, charge correlations of intermediate mass fragments emitted from heavy ion reactions at intermediate energies have been studied. No evidence for a preferred breakup into equal-sized fragments has been found.

Open-Path Fourier Transform Infrared Studies Of Large-Scale Laboratory Biomass Fires, Robert J. Yokelson, David W. T. Griffith, Darold E. Ward

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

A series of nine large-scale, open fires was conducted in the Intermountain Fire Sciences Laboratory (IFSL) controlled-environment combustion facility. The fuels were pure pine needles or sagebrush or mixed fuels simulating forest-floor, ground fires; crown fires; broadcast burns; and slash pile burns. Mid-infrared spectra of the smoke were recorded throughout each fire by open path Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy at 0.12 cm−1 resolution over a 3 m cross-stack pathlength and analyzed to provide pseudocontinuous, simultaneous concentrations of up to 16 compounds. Simultaneous measurements were made of fuel mass loss, stack gas temperature, and total mass flow up the …

In deep inelastic neutral current scattering of positrons and protons at the center of mass energy of 300 GeV, we observe, with the ZEUS detector, events with a high energy neutron produced at very small scattering angles with respect to the proton direction. The events constitute a fixed fraction of the deep inelastic, neutral current event sample independent of Bjorken x and Q2 in the range 3 · 10-4 < xBJ < 6 · 10-3 and 10 < Q2 < 100 GeV2.

Jet photoproduction, where the two highest transverse energy (ETjet) jets have ETjet above 6 GeV and a jet-jet invariant mass above 23 GeV, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at the HERA ep collider. Resolved and direct photoproduction samples have been separated. The cross section as a function of the angle between the jet-jet axis and the beam direction in the dijet rest frame has been measured for the two samples. The measured angular distributions differ markedly from each other. They agree with the predictions of QCD calculations, where the different angular distributions reflect the different spins of the …

Α-Vinyllysine And Α-Vinylarginine Are Time-Dependent Inhibitors Of Their Cognate Decarboxylases, David B. Berkowitz, Wan Jin Jahng, Michelle L. Pedersen

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

(±)-α-Vinyllysine and (±)-α-vinylarginine display time-dependent inhibition of L-lysine decarboxylase from B. cadaveris, and L-arginine decarboxylase from E. coli, respectively. A complete Kitz-Wilson analysis has been performed using a modification of the Palcic continuous UV assay for decarboxylase activity.

Method and apparatus are provided for NLO switching by first providing a phase-matched SHG grating which outputs a reinforced SHG beam only when two input beams of frequency (ω) are present in two modes of such wg. The so encoded NLO switch is operated by directing at least two input pulsed laser beams of frequency (ω) into the two modes of the wg to generate a reinforced pulsed output SHG beam and output same from the wg in an NLO switching process. The two input beams desirably have a separate pulse train and the spatial and temporal overlap of the …
