Thermally Stimulated Current Trap In Gan, David C. Look, Z-Q. Fang, W. Kim, Ö. Aktas, A. Botchkarev, A. Salvador, H. Morkoç

Physics Faculty Publications

A thermally stimulated current peak, occurring at 100 K for a heating rate of 0.4 K/s, has been found in semi‐insulating GaN grown by molecular beam epitaxy. This peak has contributions from two traps, with the main trap described by the following parameters: emission thermal activation energy E≂90±2 meV, effective capture cross‐section σ≂3±1×10−22 cm−2, and Nμτ≂3±1 × 1014 cm−1 V −1, where N is the trap concentration, μ the mobility, and τ the free‐carrier lifetime. This trap is much deeper than the typical shallow donors in conducting GaN, but shallower than any …

Optical Properties Of Boron Carbide (B5C) Thin Films Fabricated By Plasma-Enhanced Chemical-Vapor Deposition, Ahmad A. Ahmad, N.J. Ianno, P.G. Snyder, D. Welipitiya, D. Byun, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

Variable angle of incidence spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to determine the optical constants near the band edge of boron carbide (B5C) thin films deposited on glass and n-type Si(111) via plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition. The index of refraction n, the extinction coefficient k, and the absorption coefficient are reported in the photon energy spectrum between 1.24 and 4 eV. Ellipsometry analysis of B5C films on silicon indicates a graded material, while the optical constants of B5C on glass are homogeneous. Line shape analyses of absorption data for the films on glass indicate …

The Regulation And Development Of Bioremediation, Susan J. Timian, D. Michael Connolly Jun 1996

The Regulation And Development Of Bioremediation, Susan J. Timian, D. Michael Connolly

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

The authors describe how federal statutes regulating hazardous wastes create both incentives and disincentives for exploiting the large potential of bioremediation. Ultimately, they argue for regulation attending more to comparative risks and costs.

Inclusion Processes Of Cyclodextrins And Their Polymers: A Molecular Modeling Study, Stacey L. Fellows Jun 1996

Inclusion Processes Of Cyclodextrins And Their Polymers: A Molecular Modeling Study, Stacey L. Fellows

Honors Theses

Cyclodextrins (COs) and cyclodextrin polymers (CDPs) are molecules capable ot creating host/guest complexes, where a host molecule allows another molecule, a guest, to bind to it without either molecule losing its molecular identity. CDs are hydrophilic t,, 11, contain a unique hydrophobic cavity that can attract organic guest molecules. CDP is a derivative of CD and consist of two or more CD units connected by chains of glyceryl linkages (-CHrCHOH-CH2-O-). CDPs are typically more hydrophilic- than the CD monomers making them more useful for applications. However, behavior of the CDP is not as well-cinderstood as that of the monomer. Computer …

Flow Injection Analysis With A Laser-Based Detector For On-Line Determination Of Sulfide, Glucose, And Ethanol, Manisha Tinani

Honors Theses

In this research a flow injection (FI) apparatus with a laser-based detector is characterized using three chemical systems and the results are compared to those obtained by other researchers using conventional instrumentation. Each chemical system involves Methylene Blue (MR), a common redox indicator. A 670-nm diode laser is used as the excitation source, and the resulting fluorescence is measured. In the first system, MB is formed as a product of the reaction of N,N-dimethylphenylenediamine (DMPD), iron (lll) and sulfide in the presence of acid. A three-line FI manifold is employed. The amount of sulfide in water samples, including a complicated …

The Crystallization Of Estrogen-Binding Protein, Jeffrey R. Weinstein Jun 1996

The Crystallization Of Estrogen-Binding Protein, Jeffrey R. Weinstein

Honors Theses

Candida albicans is a yeast that is known to target humans with weakened immune systems. The growth rate and invasiveness of C. albicans is stimulated in the presence of estrogens. Experimental evidence suggests that the estrogen-binding protein (EBP) from C. albicans may be involved in the estrogen-induced increase in growth rate. In order to investigate the possible involvement of EBP in this process, work is underway to determine the atomic structures of EBP alone and bound to estrogen. Protein crystals of EBP have been grown at 4°C in the presence and absence of estrogen using vapor diffusion techniques from a …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Β-Cyclodextrin Polymers, Jodie L. Iannacone Jun 1996

Synthesis And Characterization Of Β-Cyclodextrin Polymers, Jodie L. Iannacone

Honors Theses

Cyclodextrin polymers (CDPs) are water Joluble polymers composed of either a, fl, or y cyclodextrin (CDl monomers. TI,ese commercially available polymers are synthesized ming epichlorohydrin and consist of CD monomers joined by repeating glycer;l linkers (-(CH2-CHOH-CH2-ln) with an average n value of 12-15. GPC analysis of these polymers indicate two major component peaks that have molecular weights (MW) of 2,000 (one CD/ polymer chain) and 9-10,000 (4-5 CDs/polymer chain). These polymers have been used to study the binding interactions of various fluorescence probes. It has been shown that the pyrene fluorescence lifetime increases and its emission I/III ratio decreases in …

Modeling Transport Of Colloid-Bound Herbicides And Heavy Metals To Groundwater, Anastasios D. Karathanasis, R. E. Phillips, A. K. Seta

KWRRI Research Reports

Recent studies have suggested that contaminant transport to groundwater may be enhanced by association with colloidal particles. This study evaluated the role of water dispersible colloids with diverse mineralogical composition in co-transporting selected herbicides and heavy metals through intact soil columns. Colloid recovery in the eluents ranged from 45-90% for the herbicides and 10-60% for the heavy metals. The presence of colloids enhanced the transport of atrazine by 2-18%, and metolachlor by 8-30%. The corresponding increase for Cu and Zn was 2-150 and 5-30 times, respectively. For Pb, there was essentially no elution in the absence of colloids, suggesting nearly …

Observer: An Approach For Query Processing In Global Information Systems Based On Interoperation Across Pre-Existing Ontologies, Eduardo Mena, Vipul Kashyap, Amit P. Sheth, Arantza Illarramendi

Kno.e.sis Publications

The huge number of autonomous and heterogeneous data repositories accessible on the “global information infrastructure” makes it impossible for users to be aware of the locations structure/organization, query languages and semantics of the data in various repositories. There is a critical need to complement current browsing, navigational and information retrieval techniques with a strategy that focuses on information content and semantics. In any strategy that focuses on information content, the most critical problem is that of different vocabularies used to describe similar information across domains. We discuss a scalable approach for vocabulary sharing. The objects in the repositories are represented …

An Avian Botulism Epizootic Affecting A Nesting Site Population Of Presbyornis : On A Carbonate Mudflat Shoreline Of Eocene Fossil Lake, V. Leroy Leggitt

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The shorebird-duck mosaic bird, Presbyornis, is best known from the Eocene Green River Formation where it often occurs in local monospecific bonebeds, suggestive of mass mortality events. The sedimentology, paleontology, taphonomy, XRD mineralogy, and the carbonate stable isotope signature (δ18O) of one of these bonebeds was studied on the southern margin of Eocene Fossil Lake.

A series of 408 standardized radiographs were used to construct the first large scale radiograph aided taphonomic map of a vertebrate fossil quarry (3,874 bones were recorded in 11.5 m2). A small group of 100 bones (including a complete skull …

A Graph Theoretic Study Of The Similarity Of Discrete Structures, Heather D. Gavlas Jun 1996

A Graph Theoretic Study Of The Similarity Of Discrete Structures, Heather D. Gavlas

Dissertations

A basic problem in drug design consists of finding a compound that satisfies a spectrum of biological and chemical properties. Although drug design problems are central to pharmaceutical research, statisticians have yet to become involved in this area as these problems are viewed statistically as optimization problems. Before statistical optimization procedures can be defined on these spaces whose points are structures and not vectors, very basic mathematical notions of distance must be defined. Graphs have been used as mathematical models to represent the bonding arrangements of molecules for quite some time. In fact, if some of the methodology used by …

Methodological And Substantive Issues In Substance Abuse Prevention Research, C. Anderson Johnson, John W. Farquhar, Steve Sussman

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This article summarizes current issues in drug abuse prevention research through integration of other articles in this journal and by heeding historical trends in prevention science. Recommendations are made for future research directions. For prevention to advance, iterative processes are needed involving both quasi-experimental and experimental designs and involving both small, simple units and large, complex, interactive units. Accuracy of measurement and replication are of paramount importance.

Formulation Enhanced Transport Of A Soil Applied Herbicide, V. P. Evangelou, Louis M. Mcdonald, Sandra Prima Jun 1996

Formulation Enhanced Transport Of A Soil Applied Herbicide, V. P. Evangelou, Louis M. Mcdonald, Sandra Prima

KWRRI Research Reports

Because pesticides are applied as formulated particles and the affinity of the active ingredient for the formulation is higher than for the bulk water, we hypothesized that a formulation complex could affect active ingredient transport. Our objectives were to investigate the nature and extent of surfactant-atrazine-clay/oxide surface interactions. When atrazine and an anionic surfactant were dried onto plain or Fe-coated sand and leached, atrazine concentrations in the initial leachate were lower in the Fe-coated sand treatment. This was likely due to an electrostatic attraction between the sand and surfactant. When a nonionic surfactant was used, atrazine concentration in the initial …

Metal-Resistance Genetically Engineered Bacteria, Sylvia Daunert, Donna Scott, Sridhar Ramanathan Jun 1996

Metal-Resistance Genetically Engineered Bacteria, Sylvia Daunert, Donna Scott, Sridhar Ramanathan

KWRRI Research Reports

Bacterial-based electrochemical and optical sensing systems that respond in a highly selective and sensitive manner to antimonite and arsenite have been developed. This was accomplished by using genetically engineered bacteria bearing one of two plasmids constructed for our studies. The first plasmid, pBGD23, contains the operator/promoter region (O/P) and the gene of the ArsR protein from the ars operon upstream from the β-galactosidase gene. In the absence of antimonite/arsenite, ArsR binds to the 0/P site and prevents the transcription of the genes for ArsR and β-galactosidase, thus blocking expression of these proteins. When antimonite or arsenite is present in the …

Multicomponent Diffusion In Two-Temperature Magnetohydrodynamics, John D. Ramshaw, C. H. Chang Jun 1996

Multicomponent Diffusion In Two-Temperature Magnetohydrodynamics, John D. Ramshaw, C. H. Chang

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A recent hydrodynamic theory of multicomponent diffusion in multitemperature gas mixtures [J. D. Ramshaw, J. Non-Equilib. Thermodyn. 18, 121 (1993)] is generalized to include the velocity-dependent Lorentz force on charged species in a magnetic field B. This generalization is used to extend a previous treatment of ambipolar diffusion in two-temperature multicomponent plasmas [J. D. Ramshaw and C. H. Chang, Plasma Chem. Plasma Process. 13, 489 (1993)] to situations in which B and the electrical current density are nonzero. General expressions are thereby derived for the species diffusion fluxes, including thermal diffusion, in both single- and two-temperature multicomponent magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). It …

Implementation And Analysis Of Software Based Fault Isolation, Scott M. Silver Jun 1996

Implementation And Analysis Of Software Based Fault Isolation, Scott M. Silver

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Extensible applications rely upon user-supplied, untrusted modules to extend their functionality. To remain reliable, applications must isolate themselves from user modules. One method places each user module in a separate address space (process), which uses hardware virtual memory support to isolate the user process. Costly inter-process communication, however, prohibits frequent communication between the application and the untrusted module. We implemented and analyzed a software method for isolating an application from user modules. The technique uses a single address space. We provide a logical address space and per-module access to system resources for each module. Our software technique is a two-step …

Private Lands: The New Frontier For Wildlife And Recreation Management, Delwin E. Benson Jun 1996

Private Lands: The New Frontier For Wildlife And Recreation Management, Delwin E. Benson

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

Private lands are the new frontier for managing wildlife that covers two-thirds of the United States, provides habitat for 85% of wildlife, and offers opportunities for outdoor recreation. Wildlife and recreation are increasingly viewed as a product of agricultural and forest lands rather than by-products. The role of landowners to manage wildlife on private lands and the incentives to do so are unclear. Historical conflicts between governments and landowners make working together a new challenge. The "debris" of controversy erodes the building blocks for solutions; thus, debates about governmental controls over wildlife must be replaced with the pragmatic recognition that …

Expectations And Future Opportunities For Fish And Wildlife Extension Programs, Jack H. Berryman

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

The charge to the panel was really in the form of a question: What do customers and cooperators expect and what are the future opportunities for fish and wildlife extension programs?

It's a pretty risky subject. Each state is different; each has different problems and opportunities. And, most of the practitioners—those who know most about it— are here in this audience.

Pete Petoskey and Jim Miller have already presented some historical background and a perspective for the future. And, the fact of these workshops and a glance at the program is clear evidence of the progress being made. The professionalism, …

Development Of A Forestry, Fish, And Wildlife Center, W. Daniel Edge, Edward Jensen, Nancy Boriack

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

Public concerns for stewardship and conservation of biological diversity have caused a reduction in the timber supply in the Pacific Northwest on federal lands. This reduction in the availability of federal timber has resulted in an intensification of management activities on private forest lands. The reduced timber supply has also increased timber prices to the point that many nonindustrial private woodland owners, who previously were not interested in selling timber, have entered the market. This intensification of management activities on the private forest base has resulted in additional increased concerns for fish and wildlife species. Reliable and readily accessible information …
