Managing Recreational Fish Ponds, Michael P. Masser Jun 1996

Managing Recreational Fish Ponds, Michael P. Masser

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

Kentucky has over 135,000 farm ponds. These ponds are used for irrigation, watering livestock, and recreation. However, most ponds are under-utilized for recreation. Existing ponds can provide excellent recreational opportunities if properly managed.

The first step in recreational pond management is to determine the pond's purpose. Ponds can be managed for swimming, fishing, aesthetics, and to attract wildlife. It may be difficult to manage for all of these things simultaneously. The pond owner must decide about goals or what is most important. If fishing is the desired objective, the following should help.

Wet And Wild: Why Landowners Restore Wetlands, Jim Pease Jun 1996

Wet And Wild: Why Landowners Restore Wetlands, Jim Pease

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

In the past 10 years, many natural resource agencies and conservation organizations have been involved in wetland restoration. In Iowa alone, between the Wetland Reserve Program (WRP), the Emergency WRP (EWRP), and the Private Lands Program of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, over 60,000 acres of palustrine and riparian wetlands have been restored, mostly on private land. This has dramatically reversed 150 years of decline in wetland acres. Other states have similar stories. What motivates landowners to participate in such programs? We undertook an 18-state survey to try to answer the question.

A phone survey of 305 participants in these …

Fisheries And Wildlife Habitat Incentive Programs In Missouri: Partnerships In Land Stewardship, Robert A. Pierce Ii Jun 1996

Fisheries And Wildlife Habitat Incentive Programs In Missouri: Partnerships In Land Stewardship, Robert A. Pierce Ii

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

Fish and wildlife resources are highly valued by Missourians. Over 70% of Missouri residents annually participate in fisheries and wildlife activities. However, the future of fisheries and wildlife conservation depends to a large extent on the land-use decisions made by landowners, as approximately 93% of the state is under private ownership. These landowners have different motivations, circumstances, and land ownership objectives which govern their management decisions.

Educational programs which enable landowners to make informed decisions regarding the conservation of fish and wildlife are critical to land stewardship and resource sustainability. Although idealistic concepts, "stewardship" implies "care and responsible management" of …

Perspective On Natural Resources Extension For The 21st Century, Merrill Petoskey Jun 1996

Perspective On Natural Resources Extension For The 21st Century, Merrill Petoskey

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

Speaking to this group of fish, wildlife, and natural resources professionals is getting to be a habit with me, having talked at this workshop three times in the past 2 decades. This is the fourth.

The first time was in 1977, I was gainfully employed as Director of Wildlife Management for the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). I'm not quite sure why I was at your meeting. I expect my good friend, Jim Miller, trapped me because of some earlier discussions we had on grazing on the Ouachita National Forest in Arkansas. Regardless, at the time, I suggested that funding, in …

Sustainable Channel Catfish Farming: Low Management Production Through Modified Stocking And Feeding Practices, William A. Wurts, Forrest Wynne Jun 1996

Sustainable Channel Catfish Farming: Low Management Production Through Modified Stocking And Feeding Practices, William A. Wurts, Forrest Wynne

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

Sustainability has become the recent "buzz-word" in aquaculture and agriculture. As Claude Boyd indicated in San Diego (Aquaculture '95), aquaculture is not truly sustainable because aquaculture relies on external feed, chemical, and energy inputs. The United States Farm Bill of 1990 more narrowly defined the key components of sustainability as: maintaining profitability, supplying food and fiber needs, using non-renewable resources efficiently, enhancing renewable resources, and improving the quality of life in rural areas.

Interdisciplinary And Multidisciplinary Public Education By Combining Consensus-Based Planning And Environmental Analysis, Sherman Swanson, Robert Wilson Jun 1996

Interdisciplinary And Multidisciplinary Public Education By Combining Consensus-Based Planning And Environmental Analysis, Sherman Swanson, Robert Wilson

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

In extension, we educate people to improve their lives. In natural resources extension, we educate people to improve life. Resolving issues often does this. In natural resources extension we also resolve issues to educate people.
As educators we steer clear of some issues to avoid the hazards. We may refrain from choosing sides. When we choose sides, we often tarnish the perceived objectivity of our University. Yet issues provide the need for knowledge, the teachable moments, and the set and focus that translates knowledge exposure into learning. When issues involve common resources, shared or conflicting interests, complications from complex or …

Effects Of Zebra, Mussel, Dreissena Polymorpha Infestation On Lake Dardanelle Water Quality, Charles J. Gagen, Joseph N. Stoeckel Jun 1996

Effects Of Zebra, Mussel, Dreissena Polymorpha Infestation On Lake Dardanelle Water Quality, Charles J. Gagen, Joseph N. Stoeckel

Technical Reports

Zebra mussels recently invaded southern waterways including the Arkansas River. Large-scale filtration of suspended particulate matter by dense populations could alter reservoir ecosystem function. Furthermore, they attach to hard surfaces, thereby threatening normal operations of artificial structures. We designed this study to provide baseline data prior to establishment of high population levels of zebra mussels in Lake Dardanelle. The characterization of spatial and temporal variability in water quality, zooplankton, phytoplankton, and macrophytes will allow testing of several hypotheses. We sampled zebra mussel veliger and settling juvenile densities and zooplankton densities at four fixed sites and the key water quality variables …

Hepatic Cytochromes P450 Enzyme Activities Of Uae Coastal Rabbit Safi Fish Siganus Canaliculatus, Amna Mana Al-Otaiba

Theses

The cytochrome P450 dependent metabolism of benzo(a)pyrene and other xenobiotics has been investigated in liver microsomes prepared from a local marine Safi fish Siganus canaliculatus caught from the Arabian Gulf of United Arab Emirates. The Safi fish was found to have a well developed liver microsomal monooxygenase system consisting of cytochrome P450, cytochrome b5 and NADPH-cytochrome c reductase. The fish microsomal enzyme system was able to metabolise benzo(a)pyrene, 7-ethoxycoumarin and 7- ethoxyresorufin. Male fish were found to exhibit a higher monooxygenase activity than female fish. Treatment of fish with β-naphthoflavone was found to induce (2-4 fold) the activities of aryl …

Environmental Study Indoor And Outdoor Of The Abu Dhabi Compost Plant, Jaber Eidha S. Aljabri Jun 1996

Environmental Study Indoor And Outdoor Of The Abu Dhabi Compost Plant, Jaber Eidha S. Aljabri

Theses

The transformation of municipal solid waste into compost is of double interest: on the one hand, it helps to avoid the deficiencies of natural manure, and on the other it eliminates this major polluting agent which is increasing progressively as a consequence of rising populations.

Domestic waste produced per person per annum amounts to 730 kg in Abu Dhabi city. Based on a population in 1992 of 574,745, this gives a current daily refuse collection that amounts to 1120 tons. Refuse is reported to contain a high proportion of organic materials and therefore to be suitable for recycling to produce …

Flash Photochemical Kinetics Of Chromium Carbonyls, Jason David Katz Jun 1996

Flash Photochemical Kinetics Of Chromium Carbonyls, Jason David Katz

Honors Theses

Chromium hexacarbonyl, Cr(C0)6, has been shown to be a very effective photochemical catalyst for many reactions, such as the 1,4- hydrogenation and 1,4-hydrosilatlon of conjugated 1,3-dienes resulting in the formation of a cis alkene product in greater than a 99% percent yield. The catalytic power of Cr(CO)6 has merited its study by many investigators, mostly with regard to the structure of the catalytic intermediates, rather than the actual kinetics of individual steps in the mechanism. The goal of this study is to construct a database of both rate and mechanistic information on the reactions of Cr(CO)6 with various alkenes and …

Application Of Tube Settlers In Secondary Wastewater Treatment, Abdulsalam Mohamed Saleh Kamalpoor Jun 1996

Application Of Tube Settlers In Secondary Wastewater Treatment, Abdulsalam Mohamed Saleh Kamalpoor

Theses

Secondary sedimentation is one of the most commonly used unit operations in wastewater treatment plants. It is customary designed to achieve solids separation from biologically treated effluent through clarification of biological solids and thickening of sludge. As treatment plants receive increasingly high wastewater flow, conventional sedimentation tanks suffer from overloading problems which result in poor performance. Inclined plate settlers, a form of tube settlers, may have good potential in upgrading sedimentation tanks. This study was conducted to examine the possibility of applying inclined plate settlers in secondary sedimentation in order to upgrade conventional rectangular sedimentation tanks and improve their performance. …

Investigation Of Radio Wave Propagation In The Martian Ionosphere Utilizing Hf Sounding Techniques, Robert J. Yowell Jun 1996

Investigation Of Radio Wave Propagation In The Martian Ionosphere Utilizing Hf Sounding Techniques, Robert J. Yowell

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a preliminary design of an ionospheric sounder to be carried aboard one or more of NASA's Mars Surveyor landers. Past Russian and American probes have indicated the existence of an ionosphere, but none of these missions remotely sensed this atmospheric layer from the surface. The rationale for utilizing a surface-based Martian ionospheric sounder is discussed. Based on NASA's choice of launch vehicle and power source, a low-weight, low-powered Chirp sounder using a horizontally-polarized dipole antenna is recommended for the sounder experiment. The sounder experiment should be conducted for at least one Martian year, in order to investigate …

Characteristic Spatial Quadratures For Discrete Ordinates Neutral Particle Transport On Arbitrary Tetrahedral Meshes, Charles R. Brennan Jun 1996

Characteristic Spatial Quadratures For Discrete Ordinates Neutral Particle Transport On Arbitrary Tetrahedral Meshes, Charles R. Brennan

Theses and Dissertations

Characteristic spatial quadratures for discrete ordinates calculations on meshes of arbitrary tetrahedra are derived and tested, including the step (SC), linear (LC), and exponential (EC) characteristic quadratures and variants that assume constant distributions on cell faces. Tetrahedral meshes accurately model curved surfaces with few cells. A split cell approach subdivides tetrahedra along the streaming direction, reducing the transport to one dimension. Assumed forms of the cell source and entering flux distributions have sufficient parameters to match the zeroth and first spatial moments. These parameters are determined by analytically inverting a linear system (LC), or by numerical inversion using Newton's method …

Twig, Branch, And Stem Diseases Of Pine, John R. Hartman Jun 1996

Twig, Branch, And Stem Diseases Of Pine, John R. Hartman

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Tip Blight

Tip blight, caused by the fungus Sphaeropsis sapinea (formerly Diplodia pinea), is a serious disease of mature Austrian, Scots (Scotch), and Mugo pines in Kentucky. In the landscape, tip blight is normally not observed until pines reach about 12 years old and begin to bear cones. Severe infections year after year can greatly weaken and eventually kill affected pines.

Rust Diseases Of Apple, John R. Hartman Jun 1996

Rust Diseases Of Apple, John R. Hartman

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Three related rust diseases occur on apple trees in Kentucky: cedar-apple rust, cedar-hawthorn rust, and cedarquince rust. Crabapple, hawthorn, mountain ash, pear, and serviceberry are also susceptible to these diseases. All three rusts are caused by different species of the fungus Gymnosporangium, each of which must spend a phase of its life cycle as a parasite on Juniperus species such as native red cedars or ornamental junipers.

Although cedar rusts can cause unsightly growths on Juniperus, they do not usually cause serious damage to these plants. Rust diseases can cause serious losses on apples, however, as a result …

Anthracnose Diseases Of Shade Trees, John R. Hartman Jun 1996

Anthracnose Diseases Of Shade Trees, John R. Hartman

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Anthracnose diseases occur on many landscape trees; though, in Kentucky, they tend to be most severe on ash, dogwood, maple, oak, and sycamore. They are typically foliar diseases but twigs, branches, and buds may also be affected. Twigs and branches may develop cankers or dead areas that girdle the stem, causing death of distal parts of the stem. Premature leaf drop commonly occurs on infected trees. Anthracnose is not fatal (except for dogwoods in some circumstances); however, severe defoliation from anthracnose year after year can seriously weaken trees. Weakened trees become more susceptible to environmental stresses and secondary pathogens.

Dogwood …

Bioaccumulation Of Methyl Mercury Through A Food Chain, J. T. Knight Jun 1996

Bioaccumulation Of Methyl Mercury Through A Food Chain, J. T. Knight

Technical Reports

The bioaccumulation of mercury through the food chain has received much attention in Arkansas during the last three years. The discovery of mercury contamination and subsequent fish consumption advisories in southwest Arkansas have increased public awareness of the potential for bioaccumulation of different toxic compounds. It is postulated that the mercury problem in Arkansas is a result of methylation and resulting bioaccumulation of mercury as methyl mercury. This study was designed to derive a Bioaccumulation Factor (BAF) for mercury in a simple food chain under controlled conditions. A BAF is calculated by dividing the concentration found in the organism by …

Study Of The B0sb0s Oscillation Frequency Using D-S ℓ+ Combinations In Z Decays, Buskulic, D.; Et Al., M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A lower limit on the oscillation frequency of the B s 0 B s 0 system is obtained from approximately four million hadronic Z decays accumulated using the ALEPH detector at LEP from 1991 to 1995. Leptons are combined with opposite sign D s − candidates reconstructed in seven different decay modes as evidence of semileptonic B s 0 decays. Criteria designed to ensure precise proper time reconstruction select 277D s − ℓ + combinations. The initial state of these B s 0 candidates is determined using an algorithm optimized to efficiently utilise the tagging information available for each event. …

An Inverse Problem In Thermal Imaging, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill Jun 1996

An Inverse Problem In Thermal Imaging, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper examines uniqueness and stability results for an inverse problem in thermal imaging. The goal is to identify an unknown boundary of an object by applying a heat flux and measuring the induced temperature on the boundary of the sample. The problem is studied in both the case in which one has data at every point on the boundary of the region and the case in which only finitely many measurements are available. An inversion procedure is developed and used to study the stability of the inverse problem for various experimental configurations.

Design Of Gradient Index Optical Thin Films, Jeffrey J. Druessel Jun 1996

Design Of Gradient Index Optical Thin Films, Jeffrey J. Druessel

Theses and Dissertations

Gradient index thin films provide greater flexibility for the design of optical coatings than the more conventional 'layer' films. In addition, gradient index films have higher damage thresholds and better adhesion properties. This dissertation presents an enhancement to the existing inverse Fourier transform gradient index design method, and develops a new optimal design method for gradient index films using a generalized Fourier series approach. The inverse Fourier transform method is modified to include use of the phase of the index profile as a variable in rugate filter design. Use of an optimal phase function in Fourier-based filter designs reduces the …

A Methodology For Reengineering Relational Databases To An Object-Oriented Database, Pedro A. Linhares Lima Jun 1996

A Methodology For Reengineering Relational Databases To An Object-Oriented Database, Pedro A. Linhares Lima

Theses and Dissertations

This research proposes and evaluates a methodology for reengineering a relational database to an object-oriented database. We applied this methodology to reengineering the Air Force Institute of Technology Student Information System (AFITSIS) as our test case. With this test case, we could verify the applicability of the proposed methodology, especially because AFITSIS comes from an old version of Oracle RDBMS. We had the opportunity to implement part of the object model using an object-oriented database, and we present some peculiarities encountered during this implementation. The most important result of this research is that it demonstrated that the proposed methodology can …

Discovery Of A White Dwarf Companion (Ms0354.6-3650 = Euve J0356-366) To A G2v Star, Damian J. Christian, Stephane Vennes, John R. Thorstensen, Mihalis Mathioudakis Jun 1996

Discovery Of A White Dwarf Companion (Ms0354.6-3650 = Euve J0356-366) To A G2v Star, Damian J. Christian, Stephane Vennes, John R. Thorstensen, Mihalis Mathioudakis

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present x-ray, ultraviolet, and optical observations of the mysterious EUV/soft x-ray source EUVE J0356-336 (= MS0354.6-3650). Initial Einstein observations identified this source with a cluster of galaxies, but the relatively high source count rate in the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) 100 Å band and the lack of variability hinted that EUVE J0356-3650 might be a white dwarf; the UK Schmidt plate of the field surrounding this object found a 12.45 magnitude G2V star that could hide a compact companion. This hypothesis was confirmed in an IUE ultraviolet spectrum that shows the definite signature of a hydrogen-rich white dwarf (DA). …

Maintaining Conventional Septic Systems, William O. Thom, Pat Keefe Jun 1996

Maintaining Conventional Septic Systems, William O. Thom, Pat Keefe

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Septic systems are used in Kentucky where municipal sewage treatment is not available. They are an effective, longstanding method of collecting, treating, and disposing of homeowner wastewater, provided they are properly sited, installed, and maintained. However, a well-sited, properly sized and installed system will fail if not properly maintained. A failed septic system creates problems such as noxious odors, lowered property values, surface water contamination, and groundwater pollution and may be a health hazard. Repair and replacement costs are considerable. Additional information on assessing septic system performance and reducing the potential risk of groundwater contamination is available from a KY-A-Syst …

Supporting Search For Reusable Software Objects, T. Isakowitz, Robert J. Kauffman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Prior research has shown that achieving high levels of software reuse in the presence of repository and object-based computer-aided software engineering (CASE) development methods presents interesting human, managerial and technical challenges. This article presents research that seeks to enhanced software development performance through reuse. We propose automated support for developers who search large repositories for the appropriate reusable software objects. We characterize search for repository objects in terms of a multistage model involving screening, identification, and the subsequent choice between new object construction or reusable object implementation. We propose automated support tools, including ORCA, a software Object Reuse Classification Analyzer, …

Formal Transformations From Graphically-Based Object-Oriented Representations To Theory-Based Specifications, Scott A. Deloach Jun 1996

Formal Transformations From Graphically-Based Object-Oriented Representations To Theory-Based Specifications, Scott A. Deloach

Theses and Dissertations

Formal software specification has long been touted as a way to increase the quality and reliability of software; however, it remains an intricate, manually intensive activity. An alternative to using formal specifications is to use graphically-based, semi-formal specifications such as those used in many object-oriented specification methodologies. While semi-formal specifications are generally easier to develop and understand, they lack the rigor and precision of formal specification techniques. The basic premise of this investigation is that formal software specifications can be constructed using correctness preserving transformations from graphically-based object-oriented representations. In this investigation, object-oriented specifications defined using Rumbaugh's Object Modeling Technique …

A Robust System For Natural Spoken Dialogue, Eric K. Ringger, James F. Allen, Bradford W. Miller, Teresa Sikorski Jun 1996

A Robust System For Natural Spoken Dialogue, Eric K. Ringger, James F. Allen, Bradford W. Miller, Teresa Sikorski

Faculty Publications

This paper describes a system that leads us to believe in the feasibility of constructing natural spoken dialogue systems in task-oriented domains. It specifically addresses the issue of robust interpretation of speech in the presence of recognition errors. Robustness is achieved by a combination of statistical error post-correction, syntactically- and semantically-driven robust parsing, and extensive use of the dialogue context. We present an evaluation of the system using time-to-completion and the quality of the final solution that suggests that most native speakers of English can use the system successfully with virtually no training.
