Peter Dowben Publications

The structural and electronic properties of nickeland phosphorus-doped boron–carbon (B5C) alloy thin films grown by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition have been examined. The Ni-doped boron–carbon alloys were grown using closo-1,2-dicarbadodecaborane (C2B10H12) as the boron–carbon source compound and nickelocene (Ni(C5H5)2) as the nickel source. The phosphorus-doped alloys were grown using the single-source compound: dimeric chloro-phospha(III)-carborane ([C2B10H10PCl] 2). Nickel doping increased the conductivity, relative to undoped B5C, by six orders of magnitude from 10-9 to 10-3 …

The Hope College PIXE facility was used to perform an analysis of zircons, apatites and monazites prevalent in rocks collected in southern India. Thin sections of the samples were prepared for electron microprobe analysis at U. Chicago, and a number of rare earth elements were quantitatively measured. These samples were then fractured and individual crystals were analyzed with 2.3 MeV protons in an internal PIXE irradiation chamber. GUPIX II© software was used to identify and measure trace metals in the samples and the results have been correlated with the electron microprobe data. Whole rock analyses, prepared by making pressed pellets …

Fluorescence Analysis For Multi-Site Aluminum Binding To Natural Organic Matter, D. Scott Smith, James R. Kramer Nov 1998

Fluorescence Analysis For Multi-Site Aluminum Binding To Natural Organic Matter, D. Scott Smith, James R. Kramer

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Natural organic matter (NOM) samples isolated from different water sources in Norway were compared using their fluorescence properties. Fluorescence surfaces were observed at pH 4.36 and deconvoluted using SIMPLISMA (Windig and Guilment 1991). There were a total of seven different fluorophores observed for these samples and each sampling site had between four and six ofthe fluorescent components. These components were observed to bind Al during titrations at the same pH. Multiresponse titration curves were fit using the method of Smith and Kramer (1998) and most of the binding strengths are similar to values for Suwannee River fulvic acid (1ogK’ between …

Multi-Site Proton Interactions With Natural Organic Matter, D. Scott Smith, James R. Kramer Nov 1998

Multi-Site Proton Interactions With Natural Organic Matter, D. Scott Smith, James R. Kramer

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Water samples from various locations in Norway were used to isolate natural organic matter (NOM). The NOM was isolated using both reverse osmosis and low-pressure low-temperature evaporation for each sample site. These samples were titrated from -log[H+] 3 to 11 at 0.1 unit intervals. The data were analyzed using the Discrete Site Analysis (DISI) technique for pKa intervals of 0.2. The acidity constants are grouped into four classes: strong (pKa < 5), intermediate strong (5.1< pKa < 7.5), intermediate weak (7.6 < pKa < 9.2), and weak (pKa > 9.3). All samples, regardless of isolation method, were found to contain strong and weak ligands, along with some intermediate ligands. For the same …

First Search For Cp Violation In Tau Lepton Decay, S. Anderson, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration Nov 1998

First Search For Cp Violation In Tau Lepton Decay, S. Anderson, Kenneth A. Bloom, Cleo Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We have performed the first search for CP violation in tau lepton decay. CP violation in lepton decay does not occur in the minimal standard model but can occur in extensions such as the multi- Higgs doublet model. It appears as a characteristic difference between the τ- and τ+ decay angular distributions for the semileptonic decay modes such as τ-K0 π-ν. We define an observable asymmetry to exploit this and find no evidence for any CP violation.

Comparison Of Water And Temperature Distribution Profiles Under Sand Tube Irrigation, Masoud Meshkat, Richard C. Warner, Stephen R. Workman Nov 1998

Comparison Of Water And Temperature Distribution Profiles Under Sand Tube Irrigation, Masoud Meshkat, Richard C. Warner, Stephen R. Workman

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Drip irrigation is one of the most efficient systems in delivering water to the plant root zone. Research has shown that the saturated, or nearly saturated, surface beneath the emitter may increase evaporation thereby reducing the irrigation efficiency. To increase the efficiency of surface applied drip irrigation on permanent tree crops a sand tube irrigation (STI) method was developed and tested. The sand tube method consists of removing a soil core beneath the emitter and filling the void with coarse sand. A weighing lysimeter was designed and instrumented to directly measure temporal evaporation during irrigation and for a period of …

Determination Of Chloride Concentration Using Capillary Zone Electrophoresis: An Instrumental Analysis Chemistry Laboratory Experiment, Michael A. Janusa Nov 1998

Determination Of Chloride Concentration Using Capillary Zone Electrophoresis: An Instrumental Analysis Chemistry Laboratory Experiment, Michael A. Janusa

Faculty Publications

Capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) has received a great deal of attention as a tool for the separation and detection of low-molecular-mass inorganic ions. CZE is a fast growing analytical technique that uses a low-volume sample accompanied by a high detection efficiency. Since this is a fairly new analytical technique that shows tremendous promise, it should be introduced to students at the undergraduate level. We have developed a CZE experiment that is well suited for an instrumental analysis chemistry laboratory and can be modified for other species or substances.

We have studied the two-center effect (TCE) in ion-atom ionization by measuring the energy and angular distributions of the double-differential cross sections (DDCSs) (d2σ/dεdΩ) of the low-energy electrons emitted in a collision of He atoms with 2.5 MeV/nucleon C6+ ions. The electrons with energies between 0.1 and 300 eV were detected for 13 different emission angles between 15° and 160°. From the measured DDCSs we have deduced the single differential cross sections such as dσ/dΩ and dσ/dε and the total cross section. The data have been …

Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing: The Development And Validation Of A Measurement Model, Sime Curkovic, Robert B. Handfield, Steven A. Melnyk, Frank L. Montabon, Robert Sroufe Nov 1998

Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing: The Development And Validation Of A Measurement Model, Sime Curkovic, Robert B. Handfield, Steven A. Melnyk, Frank L. Montabon, Robert Sroufe

Frank L. Montabon

Since the concept of Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing (ERM) is relatively new, it is not surprising to note the lack of theory-based, empirically-validated constructs and measures. Such constructs and measures are critical to the development and growth of rigorous research in this area. This paper develops and assesses such constructs and measures. Drawn from an exhaustive review of both the quality and ERM-related fields, this study uses the constructs and measures drawn from the Total Quality Management area to develop ERM-related constructs and measures. These are then evaluated using data from a survey of 526 plant managers in the U.S. automotive …

High-Resolution Electron Time-Of-Flight Apparatus For The Soft-X-Ray Region, Oliver Hemmers, S. B. Whitfield, P. Glans, H. Wang, Dennis W. Lindle, R. Wehlitz, I. A. Sellin

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

A gas-phase time-of-flight (TOF) apparatus, capable of supporting as many as six electron-TOF analyzers viewing the same interaction region, has been developed to measure energy- and angle-resolved electrons with kinetic energies up to 5 keV. Each analyzer includes a newly designed lens system that can retard electrons to about 2% of their initial kinetic energy without significant loss of transmission; the analyzers can thus achieve a resolving power (EE) greater than 104 over a wide kinetic-energy range. Such high resolving power is comparable to the photon energy resolution of state-of-the-art synchrotron–radiation beamlines in the soft …

Conserved Geometrical Base-Pairing Patterns In Rna, Neocles B. Leontis, Eric Westhof Nov 1998

Conserved Geometrical Base-Pairing Patterns In Rna, Neocles B. Leontis, Eric Westhof

Chemistry Faculty Publications

RNA molecules fold into a bewildering variety of complex 3D structures. Almost every new RNA structure obtained at high resolution reveals new, unanticipated structural motifs, which we are rarely able to predict at the current stage of our theoretical understanding. Even at the most basic level of specific RNA interactions – base-to-base pairing – new interactions continue to be uncovered as new structures appear. Compilations of possible non-canonical base-pairing geometries have been presented in previous reviews and monographs (Saenger, 1984; Tinoco, 1993). In these compilations, the guiding principle applied was the optimization of hydrogen-bonding. All possible pairs with two standard …
