Analyzing Horizontal Distances Between Wsr-88d Thunderstorm Centroids And Cloud-To-Ground Lightning Strikes, Steve L. Renner Mar 1998

Analyzing Horizontal Distances Between Wsr-88d Thunderstorm Centroids And Cloud-To-Ground Lightning Strikes, Steve L. Renner

Theses and Dissertations

On April 29, 1996, lightning struck the airfield at Hurlburt Field, FL, killing one Airmen and injuring ten others. This cloud to ground lightning strike hit eight minutes after a lightning advisory was canceled. At the time of the strike, thunderstorms were observed 7 to 10 miles north and south of the airfield. The incident raised questions about Air Force Weather Agency's lightning criteria. Soon after the incident, a Lightning Safety Review Panel was assembled to determine the adequacy of lightning advisories. One of the questions posed to the panel was could an incident like Hurlburt happen again? The review …

Dartmouth Scholarship

The strong negative evolution observed in previous X-ray-selected surveys of clusters of galaxies is evidence in favor of hierarchical models of the growth of structure in the universe. A large recent survey has, however, contradicted the low-redshift results, finding no evidence for evolution at z < 0.3. Here we present the first results from an X-ray-selected, flux- and surface brightness-limited deep survey for high-redshift clusters and groups of galaxies based on ROSAT PSPC pointed data. The log N-log S relation of all clusters in this survey is consistent with that of most previous surveys, but it occupies a flux range not previously covered (greater than 6 × 10-14 ergs cm-2 s-1 total flux in the 0.5-2 keV band). At high redshifts ( …

A Late-Time Optical Detection Of Sn 1985l In Ngc 5033, Robert A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

An apparent late-time optical recovery of SN 1985L (Type II-L) in the Sb galaxy NGC 5033 is presented and discussed. An Hα emission point source is found within 1'' of both SN 1985L's historically reported position 70'' west and 55'' north of NGC 5033's center and its late-time, radio-measured position. This Hα source is not visible on V-band or narrow red continuum (7000 ± 125 Å) images, but is detected using a 6510 Å filter (FWHM = 30 Å). Its detection at 6510 Å can be attributed to blueshifted Hα emission because of a broad (±5000 km s-1 …

Measurement Of Triple Gauge-Boson Couplings At 172 Gev, Barate, R.; Et Al, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The triple gauge-boson couplings, αWΦ, αW and αBΦ, have been measured using 34 semileptonically and 54 hadronically decaying W+W− candidate events. The events were selected in the data recorded during 1996 with the ALEPH detector at 172 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 10.65 pb−1. The triple gauge-boson couplings have been measured using optimal observables constructed from kinematic information of W+W− events. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectation.

Study On Nano Electrode Material Of Lithium Ion Batteries, Jinkua You, Yong Yang, Dong Shu, Shenghui Wu, Yingchun Zhang, Zugeng Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this paper, the structure and morphology of the nano phase electrode materials have been characterized with XRD and TEM. The performances of electrochemical intercalation and deintercalation of lithium ions have been studied by using cyclic voltammograms and galvanostatic charge discharge techniques. The results show that the nano materials posses advantage of micro structure and Li+ ions intercalation performances. The observed high capacity and large charge discharge current density of the nano phase materials seem to have resulted from three kinds of effects: 1) an increase in the space for Li+ ions intercalation; 2) a decrease in the distance for …

Gold Electrodeposition On Microelectrodes, Lihua Xiong, Caihui Shi, Xiaoqin Li, Bingwei Mao

Journal of Electrochemistry

The initial stage electrodeposition behaviors of gold onto glassy carbon and platinum microelectrodes are studied in an acid solution containing AuCl_3using cyclic voltammetry and potential step techniques. The results suggest that gold nucleation on microelectrodes requires a higher driving force with high probability. Within the range of the microelectrode dimension that have been used in the present work, large amount of gold nucleus could be formed at short time scale at overpotentials higher than a threshole value. The It curves from the platinum microelectrode are in consistence with the continuous nucleation model. It has been found that the deosition history …

Spectroscopic Investigation Of Ion Transport Mechanisms In Polyacrylonitrile Based Electrolytes, Zhaoxiang Wang, Biying Huang, Rongjian Xue, Xuejie Huang, Liquan Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

Raman, IR, X-ray photoelectron (XPS), and NMR spectra of components in polyacrylonitrilebased electrolytes have been studied. It is found that there are strong interactions among the components though different systems show different interaction characteristics. A concept of competition is proposed between the polymer matrix and the plasticizer on associating with the Li~+ ions. By analyzing the important functions of the plasticizer, a possible mechanism of the ions transport in the polymer electrolyte is suggested.

Wiener Tauberian Theorems On Semisimple Lie Group., Rudra Pada Sarkar Dr. Feb 1998

Wiener Tauberian Theorems On Semisimple Lie Group., Rudra Pada Sarkar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In their celebrated study of Harmonic analysis on semi-simple Lie groups Ehrenpreis and Mautner [E-M] noticed that the analogue of the claasical Wiener Tauberian theorem resting on the unitary dual does not hold for semisimple Lle groups. A simple proof of this fact due to M. Duflo appears in (H). Ehrenpreis and Mautner went on in (E-M] to formulate the problem on the commutative Banach algebra of the SO2(R)-biinvariant functions in L1(SL2(R))1, and obtained two different versions of the theorem involving, this time, the dual of the Banach algebra which includes, beside the unitary dual of G, a part of …

Anchor Effect Of Iron And Cobalt To Platinum On Carbon Substrates, Zidong Wei Feb 1998

Anchor Effect Of Iron And Cobalt To Platinum On Carbon Substrates, Zidong Wei

Journal of Electrochemistry

The cathodic reduction of oxygen is studied on porous carbonbased electrodes carrying platinumiron and/or cobalt alloy catalysts. Electrodes using such electrocatalysts, particularly when used as cathodes in acidic electrolytes, remain stable for longer periods. The cathodic polarization of oxygen reduction on such electrodes is 20 mV to 40 mV lower than that on the conventional electrode on which only platinum alone is used as an electrocatalysts. An accelerated aging test (AAT) is used to evaluate the corrosion resistance and sintering resistance of each catalyst. The dissolution of the catalyst in the AAT filtrate is analysed and provides a measure of …

The Time Dependent Red Shift Phenomenon Of Visible Electroluminescence Of Porous Silicon, Rongqiu Wang, Jingjian Li, Shengmin Cai, Zhongfan Liu

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electroluminescence (EL) of ntype porous silicon (PS) in a persulphate solution under cathodic polarization was studied. A significant red shift in the luminescence spectra with the increase of polarization time, as well as a blue shift with the increase of cathodic polarization, have been found. FTIR, MicroRaman, AFM and photoelectrochemical techniques have been used to investigate the structure of PS before and after the electroluminescence emission. All these results show that the surface of PS has been oxidized by the persulphate during the EL emission, and accompanied by the stripping of small silicon nanocrystallite, which leades to the red …

Electrochemical Impedance Of Molten Salts Induced Hot Corrosion, Chaoliu Zeng, Weitao Wu, Jianqing Zhang Feb 1998

Electrochemical Impedance Of Molten Salts Induced Hot Corrosion, Chaoliu Zeng, Weitao Wu, Jianqing Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Electrochemical impedance technique was employed to study corrosion behaviors of Ni-3Al, IN100 and IN738 alloys in molten (Na, K, Li)_2SO_4 at 700 ℃. The Nyquist plots for Ni-3Al and IN100 alloys have the characteristics of diffusioncontrolled reaction. But, the corrosion reaction for IN738 alloy is not controlled by the diffusion of oxidants. The equivalent circuits were proposed, and the parameters in circuits were also calculated. Ni-3Al and IN100 alloys suffer from catastrophic corrosion due to the formation of a porous corrosion layer. IN738 alloy has excellent corrosion resistance because of the formation of a protective oxide scale.

Justifying Public Decisions In Arctic Oil And Gas Development: American And Russian Approaches, Nicholas E. Flanders, Rex V. Brown, Yelena Andre'eva, Oleg Larichev

Dartmouth Scholarship

Government resource decisions in the Arctic typically involve complex issues; multiple criteria are used to choose among alternatives. This complexity is even greater with petroleum development because of concerns about national energy security, environmental impacts, and economic development. Two decision-aiding techniques may help decision makers clarify their decisions to themselves, the stakeholders, and the general public. The Russian qualitative technique seeks to reduce the number of criteria and find alternative options that may be better than the initial ones. The Western quantitative technique seeks to measure the decision maker* s judgement about the utility and certainty of each option. These …

Climatology Of The Daily Temperature Range Annual Cycle In The United States, Daniel J. Leathers, Michael A. Palecki, David A. Robinson, Kenneth F. Dewey

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Many researchers are presently interested in detecting long-term trends in annual or seasonal daily temperature range (DTR), and attributing these changes to anthropogenic origins. However, very little work has been done to confirm the mechanisms that are important to determining the long-term average annual cycle of the DTR. Therefore, the focus of this work is to examine the spatial and temporal difference in the DTR average annual cycle across the United States, and to associate the patterns of these cycles with potential causal variables. Three major types of DTR annual cycle exist in the United States: high sun season maximum …
