The shape of jets produced in quasi-real photon-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies in the range 134-277 GeV has been measured using the hadronic energy flow. The measurement was done with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Jets are identified using a cone algorithm in the η - φ plane with a cone radius of one unit. Measured jet shapes both in inclusive jet and dijet production with transverse energies EjetT > 14 GeV are presented. The jet shape broadens as the jet pseudorapidity (ηjet) increases and narrows as EjetT increases. In dijet photoproduction, the jet shapes have been measured separately for samples …

Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction e+p → e+ + jet + X with quasi-real photons have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. These cross sections are given for the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy interval 134 < W < 277 GeV and jet pseudorapidity in the range -1 < ηjet < 2 in the laboratory frame. The results are presented for three cone radii in the η - φ plane, R = 1.0, 0.7 and 0.5. Measurements of dσ/dηjet above various jet-transverse-energy thresholds up to 25 GeV and in three ranges of W are presented and compared to next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations. For jets defined with R = 1.0 differences between data and NLO calculations are seen at high ηjet and low EjetT. The measured cross sections for jets defined with R = 0.7 are well described by the calculations in the entire measured range ηjet and EjetT. The inclusive jet cross section for EjetT > 21 GeV is consistent with an approximately linear variation with the cone radius R in the range between 0.5 and 1.0, and with NLO calculations.

On Certain Varieties Of Semigroups, A. Tiefenbach
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper we generalize the class of completely regular semigroups (unions of groups) to the class of local monoids, that is the class of all semigroups where the local subsemigroups \( aSa \) are local submonoids. The sublattice of this variety \( (\mathbf{L}(\caL(\cam)) \) covers another lattice isomorphic to the lattice of all bands \( ([x^2 = x]). \) Every bundvariety \( \cau \) has as image the variety \( \Phi - \cau, \) which is the class of all semigroups, where \( \Phi \) is a \( \cau \)-congruence \( (a \Phi b \Leftrightarrow aSa = bSb). \) …

We first give a precise definition of the terms ``topological horseshoe'' and ``generalized quadrilateral'' and then examine the behavior of a homeomorphism F on a locally compact, separable, locally connected metric space X (X is usually a manifold in applications) such that F restricted to some generalized quadrilateral Q in X is a topological horseshoe map. For a set Q \subset X we define and describe (1) the permanent set Z of Q to be \{x\in X:F^n(x)\in Q for all integers n\}, and (2) the entrainment set of Q to be E(Q)=\{x\in X: F^{-n} (x)\in Q for all sufficiently large …

Performance Of Prefiltered Model-Based Frequency Estimators, Mustafa A. Altınkaya, Bülent Sankur, Emin Anarım
Performance Of Prefiltered Model-Based Frequency Estimators, Mustafa A. Altınkaya, Bülent Sankur, Emin Anarım
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this work, the performance improvement due to prefiltering of inputs in model-based frequency estimators is investigated based on simulation experiments. Initial estimates on the tone frequency locations, which are obtained via DFT peak picking type preanalysis, are used to design a prefilter to remove noise and interference. The simulations indicate that prefiltering can improve the accuracy of Pisarenko and AR frequency estimators and MUSIC and KT frequency estimators with low subspace order significantly. The SNR thresholds of model-based frequency estimators are lowered by prefiltering. Additionally, interesting trade-offs between prefiltering gain and the gain due to subspace noise filtering have …

Emission Of Excimer Radiation From Direct Current, High-Pressure Hollow Cathode Discharge, Ahmed El-Habachi, Karl H. Schoenbach
Bioelectrics Publications
A novel, nonequilibrium, high-pressure, direct current discharge, the microhollow cathode discharge, has been found to be an intense source of xenon and argon excimer radiation peaking at wavelengths of 170 and 130 nm, respectively. In argon discharges with a 100 μm diam hollow cathode, the intensity of the excimer radiation increased by a factor of 5 over the pressure range from 100 to 800 mbar. In xenon discharges, the intensity at 170 nm increased by two orders of magnitude when the pressure was raised from 250 mbar to 1 bar. Sustaining voltages were 200 V for argon and 400 V …
Contaminated Communities: A Video Documentary Of The Alberton, Montana Mixed-Chemical Spill And An Analysis Of How Its Effects On Toxics Victims Fits Into A Larger Contamination Framework From A Political Ecology Perspective, Lisa A. Mosca
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The small rural mountain town of Alberton, MT located 32 miles west of Missoula, MT was the 1996 site of the largest contamination event in railroad history involving a mixture of chemicals. On April 11, 1996 a Montana Rail Link train derailed just west of the town of Alberton, leaking 130,000 pounds of chlorine gas, 17,000 of potassium cresylate (spent oil refinery waste), and 85 dry bulk pounds of sodium chlorate into the Alberton environment. Approximately 1000 people were evacuated from their homes, many for the seventeen day evacuation period that followed. The video documentary project that I embarked on …

Searching For Periodic Sources With Ligo, Patrick R. Brady, Teviet Creighton, Curt Cutler, Bernard F. Schutz
Searching For Periodic Sources With Ligo, Patrick R. Brady, Teviet Creighton, Curt Cutler, Bernard F. Schutz
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
We investigate the computational requirements for all-sky, all-frequency searches for gravitational waves from spinning neutron stars, using archived data from interferometric gravitational wave detectors such as LIGO. These sources are expected to be weak, so the optimal strategy involves coherent accumulaton of signal-to-noise using Fourier transforms of long stretches of data (months to years). Earth-motion-induced Doppler shifts, and intrinsic pulsar spindown, will reduce the narrow-band signal-to-noise by spreading power across many frequency bins; therefore, it is necessary to correct for these effects before performing the Fourier transform. The corrections can be implemented by a parametrized model, in which one does …
Critical Casimir Forces Between Spherical Particles In Fluids, Andreas Hanke, F. Schlesener, E. Eisenriegler, S. Dietrich
Critical Casimir Forces Between Spherical Particles In Fluids, Andreas Hanke, F. Schlesener, E. Eisenriegler, S. Dietrich
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
Long-ranged correlations in a fluid close to its critical point Tc cause distinct forces between immersed colloidal particles and the container walls. We calculate such a force and its temperature dependence for the generic case of a spherical particle located at a distance D from a planar wall and find that the force attains a maximum at a temperature Tmax(D) above Tc, which facilitates quantitative experimental tests. The corresponding effective pair interaction between the colloidal particles themselves, potentially leading to aggregation, is also discussed.

A Data Analysis Approach For Detecting Gravitational Waves From Psr 0437-4715, Soumya Mohanty, I. S. Heng, David Blair, S. Dhurandhar, M. Tovar, E. Ivanov
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
A search for gravitational waves from the millisecond pulsar PSR 0437-4715 has been initiated using the bar detector NIOBE which is located at the University of Western Australia. We present a detailed report on the data analysis algorithm, called phase plane rotation, which will be used in this search. A discussion of the actual implementation of the algorithm is presented. The data analysis algorithm mentioned above has the advantage that it requires minimal changes to the already-existing data acquisition facility of NIOBE but, at the same time, it is as efficient as optimal filtering in detecting a signal. This …

Some Additive Darboux-Like Functions, Krzysztof Ciesielski
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
In this note we will construct several additive Darboux-like functions f : R → R answering some problems from (an earlier version of) [4]. In particular, in Section 2 we will construct, under different additional set theoretical assumptions, additive almost continuous (in sense of Stallings) functions f : R → R whose graph is either meager or null in the plane. In Section 3 we will construct an additive almost continuous function f : R → R which has the Cantor intermediate value property but is discontinuous on any perfect set. In particular, such an f does not have the …

Passerine Use Of Grasslands Managed With Two Grazing Regimes On The Missouri Coteau In North Dakota, Natoma A. Schneider
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Several rotational grazing systems have been implemented on the Missouri Coteau in central and northcentral North Dakota as part of the Prairie Pothole Joint Venture (PP N). The impacts these systems have on grassland passerines are not fully understood. Objectives for this study include determining relative abundance, species composition and reproductive success of passerines as well as vegetation characteristics for rotational and traditional season-long grazing regimes. Passerine relative abundance and species richness were determined on rotational grazing systems during 1995-1997 and on season-long grazed pastures during 1996-1997 using 122 fixed, 100 m radius, point counts. Relative abundance was assessed by …

Chapter 1 summarises some necessary results concerning free, divisible, algebraically compact and cotorsion groups. A detailed proof of the well-known result that the Specker group P is ℵ1 free but not free is included and the structure of the quotient group P/S is determined. The basic properties of slender groups are examined and cotorsion groups of cardinality less than or equal to that of the continuum are shown to be epimorphic images of P. Chapter II presents Nunke’s characterisation of slender groups. This approach establishes that homomorphic images of the Specker group P are the direct sum of a cotorsion …
