Assessing The Accuracy Of A New Diagnostic Test When A Gold Standard Does Not Exist, Todd A. Alonzo, Margaret S. Pepe Oct 1998

Assessing The Accuracy Of A New Diagnostic Test When A Gold Standard Does Not Exist, Todd A. Alonzo, Margaret S. Pepe

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Often the accuracy of a new diagnostic test must be assessed when a perfect gold standard does not exist. Use of an imperfect test biases the accuracy estimates of the new test. This paper reviews existing approaches to this problem including discrepant resolution and latent class analysis. Deficiencies with these approaches are identified. A new approach is proposed that combines the results of several imperfect reference tests to define a better reference standard. We call this the composite reference standard (CRS). Using the CRS, accuracy can be assessed using multistage sampling designs. Maximum likelihood estimates of accuracy and expressions for …

A Kinetic Analysis Of The Conformational Flexibility Of Steroid Hormones, Steven P. Bradbury, Julian Ivanov, Ovanes Mekenyan, Gerritt Schüürmann Oct 1998

A Kinetic Analysis Of The Conformational Flexibility Of Steroid Hormones, Steven P. Bradbury, Julian Ivanov, Ovanes Mekenyan, Gerritt Schüürmann

Steven P. Bradbury

For a set of 10 androgen steroids and estradiol (E2), the kinetic feasibility of conformation flexibility of the cyclic moieties was studied under the constraint of maintaining the B/C trans and C/D trans ring fusion of the natural and biologically active enantiomer. To this end, the conformational energy surface was quantified using the semiempirical quantum chemical AM1 model. The computational analysis included the location of Conformational transition states with associated barriers, and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) calculations to characterize the trajectories of the rotations and the relationships of the transition states to neighbouring chair and twist conformations. Conformational transformations were …

Abstractions For Simplifying Planning In Self-Reconfigurable Robotic Systems, Craig Mcgray, Daniela Rus

Computer Science Technical Reports

In [KVRM], we described a three-dimensional self-reconfiguring robot module called the Molecule Robot. In this paper, we provide a system of abstractions for modules in self-reconfigurable robotic systems, and show how this system can be used to simplify the motion planning of the Molecule Robot system.

Saturation In “Nonmagnetic” Stainless Steel, Christopher P. Weber, J. Fajans Oct 1998

Saturation In “Nonmagnetic” Stainless Steel, Christopher P. Weber, J. Fajans

Physics

Scientific equipment often uses “nonmagnetic” stainless steel, relying on the steel’s nonmagnetic behavior to leave external magnetic fields unaltered. However, stainless steel’s permeability can rise significantly when it is welded or machined, possibly perturbing an external field. Such perturbations will diminish well above the stainless steel’s saturation point. The authors measured the permeability of both welded and machined 304 stainless steel as a function of an external magnetic field, and found that both saturate at fields of approximately 0.25 T.

Physics & Astronomy

Recent interpretations of cusp energetic ions observed by the POLAR spacecraft have suggested a new energization process in the cusp [Chen et al., 1997; 1998]. Simultaneous enhancement of H+, He+2, and O>+2 fluxes indicates that they are of solar wind origin. In the present study, we examine H+ and He+2 energy spectra from 20 eV to several 100 keV measured by the Hydra, Toroidal Imaging Mass-Angle Spectrograph (TIMAS), and Charge and Mass Magnetospheric Ion Composition Experiment (CAMMICE) on POLAR. The combined spectrum for each species is shown to be continuous with a …

On The Dynamics Of Stochastic Differential Equations (Ellis B. Stouffer Colloquium, University Of Kansas), Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed Oct 1998

On The Dynamics Of Stochastic Differential Equations (Ellis B. Stouffer Colloquium, University Of Kansas), Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed

Miscellaneous (presentations, translations, interviews, etc)

We formulate and outline a proof of the Local Stable Manifold Theorem for stochastic differential equations (SDE's) in Euclidean space (joint work with M. Scheutzow). This is a central result in dynamical systems with noise. Starting with the existence of a stochastic flow for an SDE, we introduce the notion of a hyperbolic stationary trajectory. We prove the existence of invariant random stable and unstable manifolds in the neighborhood of a hyperbolic stationary solution. For Stratonovich noise, the stable and unstable manifolds are dynamically characterized using forward and backward solutions of the anticipating SDE.

Qed On A Circle, James E. Hetrick, Y. Hosotani

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

QED with massless fermions on a circle is exactly solved. The nonintegrable phase [see file], which is a dynamical degree of freedom on a circle, couples through the anomaly to the zero mode of the fermion-antifermion bound states, leading to the θ vacuum.

Rank One And Loosely Bernoulli Actions In Zᵈ, Aimee S.A. Johnson, A. A. Şahin

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

We define rank one for Zᵈ actions and show that those rank one actions with a certain tower shape are loosely Bernoulli for d greater than or equal to 1. We also construct a zero entropy Z² loosely Bernoulli action with a zero entropy, ergodic, non-loosely Bernoulli one-dimensional subaction.

Evidence Of Initial-State Two-Center Effects For (E, 2e) Reactions, Sindu P. Jones, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Coincidence, or (e, 2e), measurements of electron-impact ionization of atoms have established that the largest values of triply differential cross sections are obtained in collisions involving small momentum transfer to the target. Absolute measurements for these reactions are now available for hydrogen at 54.4-eV impact energy, and relative data have recently been reported at 27.2 eV. Previous theoretical works have concentrated on employing asymptotically correct two-center wave functions for the final state, leaving the initial state described by the Born approximation. Here we report results for which asymptotically correct two-center wave functions are used for both the initial and final …

Automated Highway Systems, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Kristen L. Sanford Oct 1998

Automated Highway Systems, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Kristen L. Sanford

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Intelligent transportation systems (ATS) have received much attention in the transportation community and by the government in the past decade. The technology is an extension of intelligent vehicle highway systems to include transportation modes beyond highways. Major elements of ITS include: advanced traffic management systems; advanced traveller information systems; automated highway systems; the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative; and advanced commercial vehicle systems. ITS initiatives are proposed for both urban and rural areas to increase transportation system capacity by more fully utilizing the existing transportation system and improve transportation system safety. The feasibility of realizing a fully automated highway system is discussed.

A Note On The Green Dyadic Calculation Of The Decay Rates For Admolecules At Multiple Planar Interfaces, P.T. Leung, R. L. Hartman, Scott M. Cohen

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Green dyadic formulation for calculating classical decay rates of admolecules at multiple planar interfaces first published by Chance, Prock and Silbey is reexamined. It is pointed out that, for the case of fluorescing molecules sandwiched between a system of super- and substrate interfaces, the original formalism requires significant modifications in order to lead to results consistent with those obtained from the Sommerfeld radiation theory.

Peculiar Velocity Dipoles Of Field Galaxies, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, Wolfram Freudling, Luiz N. Da Costa, John J. Salzer, Gary Wegner Oct 1998

Peculiar Velocity Dipoles Of Field Galaxies, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, Wolfram Freudling, Luiz N. Da Costa, John J. Salzer, Gary Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

The Tully-Fisher (TF) relation is applied to obtain peculiar velocities of field spiral galaxies and to calculate dipoles of the peculiar velocity field to cz8000 km s-1. The field galaxy sample is spatially coextensive with and completely independent of a cluster sample, for which dipole characteristics are given in a separate paper. Dipoles of the peculiar velocity field are obtained separately by applying (1) an inverse version of the TF relation and selecting galaxies by redshift windowing and (2) a direct TF relation, with velocities corrected for the inhomogeneous Malmquist bias and windowing galaxies by TF distance. …

Interagency Lake Mead And Las Vegas Wash Monitoring Program: Standard Operating Procedures Manual, Bureau Of Reclamation, City Of Henderson Water Reclamation Facility, City Of Las Vegas Water Pollution Control Facility, Clark County Sanitation District, Nevada, Southern Nevada Water Authority

Publications (WR)

A number of agencies sample Lake Mead and the Las Vegas Wash on a routine basis at several locations. In order to share and properly interpret the data, the Bureau of Reclamation, Southern Nevada Water Authority and the three Wastewater Treatment Facilities (City of Las Vegas, Clark County Sanitation District and City of Henderson) formed a committee to examine sampling and analytical protocols and to share information with the goal of maximizing the data quality. The group first met in April 1997.

It was agreed that an effort should be made to discuss and compare specific sampling and analytical techniques …
