Performance Of Sinusoidally Deformed Hydrophone Line Arrays, Deanna M. Caveny, Donald R. Del Balzo, James H. Leclere, George E. Ioup Apr 1999

Performance Of Sinusoidally Deformed Hydrophone Line Arrays, Deanna M. Caveny, Donald R. Del Balzo, James H. Leclere, George E. Ioup

Physics Faculty Publications

It is well known that array deformations can distort beam patterns and introduce bearing errors if the beamformer assumes linearity. It is also known that deformed arrays can resolve left–right ambiguities, provided the shape is known. In this work, these two effects are studied for undamped and damped sinusoidally deformed arrays with small deformation amplitudes in the horizontal (x,y) plane only. By use of fixed arc-length separations along the array, the hydrophone (x,y) coordinates are determined numerically and the error in assuming equal x spacing is summarized for a sample array. Array-response …

Automorphic Subsets Of The N-Dimensional Cube Are Translations Of Cwatsets, Matthew Lepinski Apr 1999

Automorphic Subsets Of The N-Dimensional Cube Are Translations Of Cwatsets, Matthew Lepinski

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

It is known that automorphic subsets are generalizations of cwatsets. In this paper we show that an automorphic subset is the translation of some cwatset, and therefore that each automorphic subset is internally isomorphic to a cwatset.

Hydrogen Bonding And Cooperative Effects In Mixed Dimers And Trimers Of Methanol And Trifluoromethanol: An Ab Initio Study, Ruben D. Parra, Xiao Cheng Zeng Apr 1999

Hydrogen Bonding And Cooperative Effects In Mixed Dimers And Trimers Of Methanol And Trifluoromethanol: An Ab Initio Study, Ruben D. Parra, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Ab initio calculations are used to provide information on the mixed dimers and cyclic trimers of the methanol-trifluoromethanol system. In order to better understand the systems, the monomers and their corresponding dimers and trimers are also investigated. Molecular structures and harmonic frequencies are obtained at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. Interaction energies are calculated with the MP2 and B3LYP methods using the 6-311++G(d,p), 6-311++G(2d,2p), and 6-311++G(3d,2p) basis sets for the dimers and heterodimers. The 6-311++G(d,p) basis set was used to calculate the …

Kinetics Of The Photosubstitution Of Cis-Bis(Benzonitrile)Dichloroplatinum(Ii) In Chloroform, Eric M. Jaryszak, Son L. Phan, Patrick E. Hoggard Apr 1999

Kinetics Of The Photosubstitution Of Cis-Bis(Benzonitrile)Dichloroplatinum(Ii) In Chloroform, Eric M. Jaryszak, Son L. Phan, Patrick E. Hoggard

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Under 254 nm irradiation cis-[Pt(C6H5CN)2Cl2] is converted to H2PtCl6. Absorption of light by both the metal complex and the solvent contribute to the first step of this process, suggested to form HPt(C6H5CN) Cl3. A linear dependence of the reaction rate on light intensity appears to rule out chlorination by trichloromethyl radicals. However, at higher light intensities a higher order dependence on intensity develops, and under 313 nm irradiation is dominant, and a reaction between trichloromethyl radical and the excited state complex is proposed to account for this.

Asymptotic Analysis Of The Structure Of A Steady Planar Detonation: Review And Extension, William B. Bush, L. Krishnamurthy Apr 1999

Asymptotic Analysis Of The Structure Of A Steady Planar Detonation: Review And Extension, William B. Bush, L. Krishnamurthy

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The structure of a steady planar Chapman-Jouguet detonation, which is supported by a direct first-order one-step irreversible exothermic unimolecular reaction, subject to Arrhenius kinetics, is examined. Solutions are studied, by means of a limit-processexpansion analysis, valid for A, proportional to the ratio of the reaction rate to the flow rate, going to zero, and for β, proportional to the ratio of the activation temperature to the maximum flow temperature, going to infinity, with the product Aβ½ going to zero. The results, essentially in agreement with the Zeldovich-von Neumann-Dōring model, show that the detonation consists of (1) a three-region upstream shocklike …

Intermediate Rings Between A Local Domain And Its Completion, William Heinzer, Christel Rotthaus, Sylvia Wiegand

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

We consider the structure of certain intermediate domains between a local Noetherian domain Rand an ideal-adic completion R* of R that arise as the intersection of R* with a field containing R. In the case where the intersection domain A can be expressed as a directed union of localized polynomial extension rings of R, the computation of A is easier. We examine conditions for this to happen. We also present examples to motivate and illustrate the concepts considered.

Tectonic Forcings Of Maastrichtian Ocean-Climate Evolution, Tracy D. Frank, Michael A. Arthur Apr 1999

Tectonic Forcings Of Maastrichtian Ocean-Climate Evolution, Tracy D. Frank, Michael A. Arthur

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

A global compilation of deep-sea isotopic records suggests that Maastrichtian ocean-climate evolution was tectonically driven. During the early Maastrichtian the Atlantic intermediate-deep ocean was isolated from the Pacific, Indian, and Southern Oceans; deep water formed in the high-latitude North Atlantic and North Pacific. At the early/late Maastrichtian boundary a major reorganization of oceanic circulation patterns occurred, resulting in the development of a thermohaline circulation system similar to that of the modem oceans. A combination of isotopic and plate kinematic data suggests that this event was triggered by the final breaching of tectonic sills in the South Atlantic and the initiation …

Structural And Kinetic Studies Of A Cisplatin-Modified Dna Icosamer Binding To Hmg1 Domain B*, Elizabeth R. Jamieson, Matthew P. Jacobson, Carmen M. Barnes, Christine S. Chow, Stephen J. Lippard

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

The high mobility group (HMG) domain is a DNA-binding motif found in the non-histone chromosomal proteins, HMG1 and HMG2, and some transcription factors. Experimental evidence has demonstrated that HMG-domain proteins can play a role in sensitizing cells to the anticancer drug cisplatin. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) experiments were performed in the present study to investigate structural changes that accompany complex formation between the HMG domain B of HMG1 and a cisplatin-modified, 20-base pair double-stranded DNA probe containing fluorescein and rhodamine tethered at its two ends. The binding affinity of HMG1 domain B for the cisplatin-modified DNA probe was investigated …

A Systematic Integration Of Register Allocation And Instruction Scheduling, Yukong Zhang Apr 1999

A Systematic Integration Of Register Allocation And Instruction Scheduling, Yukong Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

In order to achieve high performance, processor architecture has become more and more complicated. As a result, compiler-time optimizations have become more and more important for the effective use of a complex processor. One of the promising compiler-time optimizations is the integration of register allocation and instruction scheduling based on register-reuse chains. In the previous approach, however, the generation of register-reuse chains was not completely systematic and consequently created many unnecessary dependencies that restrict instruction scheduling.

This research proposes a new register allocation technique based on a systematic generation of register-reuse chains. The first phase of the proposed technique is …

The Best Way To Knock 'M Down, Arthur T. Benjamin, Matthew T. Fluet '99

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

"Knock 'm Down" is a game of dice that is so easy to learn that it is being played in classrooms around the world. Although this game has been effective at developing students' intuition about probability [Fendel et al. 1997; Hunt 1998], we will show that lurking underneath this deceptively simple game are many surprising and highly unintuitive results.

The Rate-Based Execution Model, Kevin Jeffay, Steve Goddard Apr 1999

The Rate-Based Execution Model, Kevin Jeffay, Steve Goddard

CSE Technical Reports

We present a new task model for the real-time execution of event-driven tasks in which no a priori characterization of the actual arrival rates of events is known; only the expected arrival rates of events is known. We call this new task model rate-based execution (RBE), and it is a generalization of the common sporadic task model. The RBE model is motivated naturally by distributed multimedia and digital signal processing applications.
We identify necessary and sufficient conditions for determining the feasibility of an RBE task set, and an optimal scheduling algorithm (based on preemptive earliest-deadline-first (EDF) scheduling) for scheduling the …

The 295 K unit cell parameters of Pr2Fe17Hx, where x is 0, 1, 2, and 3, have been determined by x-ray diffraction. Upon hydrogenation, the unit cell volume expands anisotropically with a 1.2% expansion of the a axis and no expansion of the c axis for x=3. The Curie temperatures are 286, 374, 440, and 484 K, for x=0, 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The Mössbauer spectra have been measured between 4.2 and 295 K, and the spectra of Pr2Fe17H and Pr2Fe17H2, obtained above …

Electron Affinities Of The Oxides Of Aluminum, Silicon, Phosphorus, Sulfur, And Chlorine, Nicole R. Brinkmann, Gregory S. Tschumper, Henry F. Schaefer Apr 1999

Electron Affinities Of The Oxides Of Aluminum, Silicon, Phosphorus, Sulfur, And Chlorine, Nicole R. Brinkmann, Gregory S. Tschumper, Henry F. Schaefer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The adiabatic electron affinities of five second row atoms (Al, Si, P, S, Cl) and their monoxides and dioxides were determined using six different densities functional or hybrid Hartree-Fock/density functional methods. The 15 species selected form a convenient closed set for which reliable experimental electron affinities exist for 13 of the species. Zero-point vibrational energy corrected electron affinities are also reported. Equilibrium geometries and vibrational frequencies were determined with each density functional method. The method based on the Becke exchange functional and the Lee-Yang-Parr correlation (BLYP) functional reproduced the experimental electron affinities most accurately, having an average absolute error of …

We show that the re are no non-trivial closable derivations of a C*-algebra anticommuting with an ergodic action of a compact group, supposing that the set of squares is dense in the group. We also show that the re are no non-trivial closable densely defined rank one derivations on any C*-algebra.
