Characterization Of Central Iowa Forests With Permanent Plots, James W. Raich, Donald R. Farrar, Ruth A. Herzberg, Eenam Sin, Cindy L. Johnson-Groh Jan 1999

Characterization Of Central Iowa Forests With Permanent Plots, James W. Raich, Donald R. Farrar, Ruth A. Herzberg, Eenam Sin, Cindy L. Johnson-Groh

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

We describe a standard methodology for establishing and inventorying the woody vegetation in 0.1-ha permanent forest plots and we utilize the data from 86 plots to characterize the mature forest vegetation of central Iowa. Obvious differences existed between bottomland hardwoods and upland forest stands, but disturbed uplands contained species typical of bottomlands. Little-disturbed upland forest plots included a variety of species associations, but variation among plots was continuous. The trees dominating the mature upland forests of central Iowa grow in a wide variety of habitats, with the result that predictability of stand structure at any location is limited. Stands on …

The Vascular Flora Of Doolittle Prairie State Preserve - A Prairie Pothole Wetland Complex, Paul R. Wetzel, William R. Norris, Kevin M. Lyles

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Doolittle Prairie State Preserve is a 10 ha prairie pothole wetland complex located in Story County, central Iowa. A vascular flora of Doolittle Prairie is compiled and the prominent vegetation communities and zones described based on field observations by the authors and several additional investigators from 1982 to 1997. The preserve contains 14 shallow wetlands comprised of low prairie, wet meadow, and shallow emergent plant communities, as well as a disturbed prairie community and fence rows. These communities support a diverse vascular flora of 223 native species, plus 42 non-natives, representing 59 families and 178 genera. The Asteraceae (40), Poaceae …

A Municipal Inventory And Evaluation Of Natural Areas: History And Methodology, William R. Norris, Donald R. Farrar Jan 1999

A Municipal Inventory And Evaluation Of Natural Areas: History And Methodology, William R. Norris, Donald R. Farrar

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

An inventory of natural areas in the vicinity of Ames, Iowa was conducted (1990-1994) in response to conflicts arising when significant natural areas were encountered on lands approved for development by the City of Ames (Iowa) Planning Office. Methods for objective evaluation of woodland and prairie quality were developed for use during the inventory. The woodland method is based on four components: I) Diversity of expected species, H) Structure of canopy and understory layers, III) Fidelity of species to the habitat and IV) absence of Introduced Species. Rules are explicitly stated for the scoring of each component for both the …

Improved Properties Of Taox Films Doped With Al And N, Robert B. Van Dover, Lynn Schneemeyer, R. M. Fleming, D. J. Werder Jan 1999

Improved Properties Of Taox Films Doped With Al And N, Robert B. Van Dover, Lynn Schneemeyer, R. M. Fleming, D. J. Werder

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Simultaneous addition of Al and N to Ta-O thin films is found to significantly improve the dielectric properties of the films. Specifically, substitution of 10-40 at. % Al for Ta along with approx. 2 at. % N for O is found to decrease the density of catastrophic defects in the films, resulting in high and statistically more uniform breakdown voltages. This conclusion is based on evaluation of approx. 750 individual capacitors in each experiment.

Negative Ph, Efflorescent Mineralogy, And Consequences For Environmental Restoration At The Iron Mountain Superfund Site, California, D. Kirk Nordstrom, Charles N. Alpers Jan 1999

Negative Ph, Efflorescent Mineralogy, And Consequences For Environmental Restoration At The Iron Mountain Superfund Site, California, D. Kirk Nordstrom, Charles N. Alpers

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Richmond Mine of the Iron Mountain copper deposit contains some of the most acid mine waters ever reported. Values of pH have been measured as low as -3.6, combined metal concentrations as high as 200 g/liter, and sulfate concentrations as high as 760 g/liter. Copious quantities of soluble metal sulfate salts such as melanterite, chalcanthite, coquimbite, rhomboclase, voltaite, copiapite, and halotrichite have been identified, and some of these are forming from negative-pH mine waters. Geochemical calculations show that, under a mine-plugging remediation scenario, these salts would dissolve and the resultant 600,000-m3 mine pool would have a pH of …

Auctions Without Common Knowledge, Sviatoslav B. Brainov, Tuomas W. Sandholm Jan 1999

Auctions Without Common Knowledge, Sviatoslav B. Brainov, Tuomas W. Sandholm

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper proves that the revenue equivalence theorem ceases to hold for auctions without common knowledge about the agents' prior beliefs. That is, different auction forms yield different expected revenue. To prove this, an auction game is converted to a Bayesian decision problem with an infinite hierarchy of beliefs. A general solution for such Bayesian decision problems is proposed. The solution is a generalization of the standard Bayesian solution and coincides with it for finite belief trees and for trees representing common knowledge. It is shown how the solution generalizes the frequently used technique of backward induction for infinite belief …

A Fine-Grained Model For Code Mobility, Cecilia Mascolo, Gian Pietro Picco, Gruia-Catalin Roman Jan 1999

A Fine-Grained Model For Code Mobility, Cecilia Mascolo, Gian Pietro Picco, Gruia-Catalin Roman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In this paper, we take the extreme view that every line of code is potentially mobile, i.e., may be duplicated and/or moved from one program context to another on the same host or across the network. Our motivation is to gain a better understanding of the range of constructs and issues facing the designer of a mobile code system, in a setting that is abstract and unconstrained by compilation and performance considerations traditionally associated with programming language design. Incidental to our study is an evaluatoin of the expressive power of Mobile UNITY, a notation and proof logic for mobile computing.

Floor Control Protocol For Alx Video Conference Application, Ruibiao Qiu Jan 1999

Floor Control Protocol For Alx Video Conference Application, Ruibiao Qiu

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

With wide deployment of high-speed networks such as vBNS today, video-conference applications over WANs have become increasingly feasible. MMX has proven to be a good desktop video-conference devide for local ATM networks. Now, ALX has been designed to extend MMX's video conferencing capability to IP-over-ATM WANs such as vBNS. In this report, we discuss a floor control protocol for ALX video-conference applications. We first show how an "ideal" protocol should behave to meet our requirements. Then we compare three protocols based on distributed algorithms, and a protocol based on a centralized algorithm. Based on the comparison and performance analysis, we …

Oyster Reef Habitat Restoration : A Synopsis And Synthesis Of Approaches; Proceedings From The Symposium, Williamsburg, Virginia, April 1995, Mark Luckenbach, Roger L. Mann, James A. Wesson Jan 1999

Oyster Reef Habitat Restoration : A Synopsis And Synthesis Of Approaches; Proceedings From The Symposium, Williamsburg, Virginia, April 1995, Mark Luckenbach, Roger L. Mann, James A. Wesson

Reports

This volume has its origin in a symposium held in Williamsburg, VA in April 1995, though most of the chapters have been significantly revised in the interim. The primary purpose of the symposium was to bring together state fisheries managers involved in fisheries-directed oyster enhancement and research scientists to refine approaches for enhancing oyster populations and to better develop the rationale for restoring reef habitats. We could hardly have anticipated the degree to which this been successful. In the interim between the symposium and the publication of this volume the notion that oyster reefs are valuable habitats, both for oysters …

Geometrical Models For Grain Dynamics, Giovani L. Vasconcelos, J. J. P. Veerman Jan 1999

Geometrical Models For Grain Dynamics, Giovani L. Vasconcelos, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study models for the gravity-driven, dissipative motion of a single grain on an inclined rough surface. Imposing some conditions on the momentum loss due to the collisions between the particle and the surface, we arrive at a class of models in which the grain dynamics is described by one-dimensional maps. The dynamics of these maps is studied in detail. We prove the existence of various dynamical phases and show that the presence of these phases is independent of the restitution law (within the class considered).

Approaching Critical Thinking Through Science, Linda A. George, Jack C. Straton Jan 1999

Approaching Critical Thinking Through Science, Linda A. George, Jack C. Straton

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

One unanticipated development of University Studies is the degree to which it rapidly became seen not just as general education, but as the replacement for all generally re quired courses. Because the natural sciences had com prised one of the distribution areas of the old program, expectations that the new program would teach science quickly flowered, although exactly what faculty mean by that term has yet to be established. In fact, discussions of what we intend by science education have brought in creased attention to these expectations as we continually revisit the goals of University Studies. The matter is far …

Chlorine-Containing Gases In Antarctica, M. A. K. Khalil, R. A. Rasmussen Jan 1999

Chlorine-Containing Gases In Antarctica, M. A. K. Khalil, R. A. Rasmussen

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In recent years, there has been considerable interest in chlorine-containing trace gases in the atmosphere, particularly in Antarctica because of the relationship between chlorofluorocarbons and the antarctic ozone hole. All chlorinecontaining trace gases, whether produced by human activities or by natural processes, have a potential for destroying ozone in the stratosphere. This is a complex environmental problem, but it is clear that manmade chlorine-containing gases are the driving force behind the antarctic ozone hole and, by extension, reductions of stratospheric ozone over other parts of the world [World Meteorological Organization (WMO) 1989, 1991, 1995]. We have taken measurements of the …

Effects Of Predation On Two Species Of Stream-Dwelling Crayfish (Orconectes Marchandi And Cambarus Hubbsi) In Pool And Riffle Microhabitats, Heidi Dukat, Daniel D. Magoulick Jan 1999

Effects Of Predation On Two Species Of Stream-Dwelling Crayfish (Orconectes Marchandi And Cambarus Hubbsi) In Pool And Riffle Microhabitats, Heidi Dukat, Daniel D. Magoulick

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Community structure may be governed by many abiotic and biotic factors. Of the biotic factors, predation is often considered to be critical in structuring freshwater stream communities. In the Warm Fork of the Spring River, the crayfish Cambarus hubbsi is found mainly in riffles, whereas the crayfish Orconectes marchandi is found in high numbers in pools. We hypothesized that predation, mainly by fish, is a factor causing this segregation. Higher predation rates for C. hubbsi than 0. marchandi in the pools and higher predation rates for 0. marchandi than C. hubbsi in the riffles were expected. A transplant tethering experiment …

Inclusive photoproduction of D*± mesons has been measured for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 < W < 28OGeV and photon virtuality Q2 < IGeV2. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb-1. Total and differential cross sections as functions of the D* transverse momentum and pseudorapidity are presented in restricted kinematical regions and the data are compared with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations using the "massive charm" and "massless charm" schemes. The measured cross sections are generally above the NLO calculations, in particular in the forward (proton) direction. The large data sample also allows the study of dijet production associated with charm. A significant resolved as well as a direct photon component contribute to the cross section. Leading order QCD Monte Carlo calculations indicate that the resolved contribution arises from a significant charm component in the photon. A massive charm NLO parton level calculation yields lower cross sections compared to the measured results in a kinematic region where the resolved photon contribution is significant.
