Coordinate Realizations Of Deformed Lie Algebras With Three Generator, Ranabir Dutt, Asim Gangopadhyaya, C. Rasinariu, Uday P. Sukhatne

Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Differential realizations in coordinate space for deformed Lie algebras with three generators are obtained using bosonic creation and annihilation operators satisfying Heisenberg commutation relations. The unified treatment presented here contains as special cases all previously given coordinate realizations of so(2,1), so(3), and their deformations. Applications to physical problems involving eigenvalue determination in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics are discussed.

Peak-To-Mean Power Control In Ofdm, Golay Complementary Sequences, And Reed–Muller Codes, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab Nov 1999

Peak-To-Mean Power Control In Ofdm, Golay Complementary Sequences, And Reed–Muller Codes, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We present a range of coding schemes for OFDM transmission using binary, quaternary, octary, and higher order modulation that give high code rates for moderate numbers of carriers. These schemes have tightly bounded peak-to-mean envelope power ratio (PMEPR) and simultaneously have good error correction capability. The key theoretical result is a previously unrecognized connection between Golay complementary sequences and second-order Reed–Muller codes over alphabets ℤ2h. We obtain additional flexibility in trading off code rate, PMEPR, and error correction capability by partitioning the second-order Reed–Muller code into cosets such that codewords with large values of PMEPR are isolated. …

A New Numerical Model Of Coupled Inland Ice Sheet, Ice Stream, And Ice Shelf Flow And Its Application To The West Antarctic Ice Sheet, Christina L. Hulbe, D. R. Macayeal

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

We have developed a dynamic/thermodynamic finite element numerical model that couples inland ice sheet, ice stream, and ice shelf dynamics. This new model stands apart from other whole ice sheet models in its explicit treatment of ice stream flow. Additionally, the model accounts for both horizontal and vertical advection and diffusion of temperature in the flowing ice. In present day simulations of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), modeled ice velocity agrees well with observed ice flow. In particular, the model reproduces the pattern of speed variation across ice streams although the continuous downstream speed up of ice flow cannot …

A Spin Network Primer, Seth Major Nov 1999

A Spin Network Primer, Seth Major

Articles

Spin networks, essentially labeled graphs, are “good quantum numbers” for the quantum theory of geometry. These structures encompass a diverse range of techniques which may be used in the quantum mechanics of finite dimensional systems, gauge theory, and knot theory. Though accessible to undergraduates, spin network techniques are buried in more complicated formulations. In this paper a diagrammatic method, simple but rich, is introduced through an association of 2×2" role="presentation" style="display: inline; line-height: normal; word-spacing: normal; word-wrap: normal; white-space: nowrap; float: none; direction: ltr; max-width: none; max-height: none; min-width: 0px; min-height: 0px; border: 0px; padding: 0px 2px 0px 0px; margin: 0px; …

Laser-Induced Stabilization Of Autoionizing States, Heider N. Ereifej, J. Greg Story Nov 1999

Laser-Induced Stabilization Of Autoionizing States, Heider N. Ereifej, J. Greg Story

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stabilization of autoionizing states of barium by laser-induced, stimulated emission of light is demonstrated. Relative to purely flourescent stabilization, the data clearly show an enhancement of the stabilization process for laser pulses short compared to the flourescent lifetime of the autoionizing states. Shakeup spectra in which the principal quantum number of both electrons changes during the stimulated emission process are also clearly demonstrated.

Slow-Binding Inhibition Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica By Peptide Thiols: Synthesis And Spectroscopic Characterization, Kristi M. Huntington, David L. Bienvenue, Yaoming Wei, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz, Dehua Pei Nov 1999

Slow-Binding Inhibition Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica By Peptide Thiols: Synthesis And Spectroscopic Characterization, Kristi M. Huntington, David L. Bienvenue, Yaoming Wei, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz, Dehua Pei

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Peptide-derived thiols of the general structure N-mercaptoacyl-leucyl-p-nitroanilide (1ac) were synthesized and found to be potent, slow-binding inhibitors of the aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP). The overall potencies (KI*) of these inhibitors against AAP range from 2.5 to 57 nM exceeding that of the natural product bestatin and approaching that of amastatin. The corresponding alcohols (2ab) are simple competitive inhibitors of much lower potencies (KI = 23 and 360 μM). These data suggest that the free thiols are involved in the formation of the E·I …

Zbroker: A Query Routing Broker For Z39.50 Databases, Yong Lin, Jian Xu, Ee Peng Lim, Wee-Keong Ng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A query routing broker is a software agent that determines from a large set of accessing information sources the ones most relevant to a user's information need. As the number of information sources on the Internet increases dramatically, future users will have to rely on query routing brokers to decide a small number of information sources to query without incurring too much query processing overheads. In this paper, we describe a query routing broker known as ZBroker developed for bibliographic database servers that support the Z39.50 protocol. ZBroker samples the content of each bibliographic database by using training queries and …

Intersecting Chains In Finite Vector Spaces, Eva Czabarka Nov 1999

Intersecting Chains In Finite Vector Spaces, Eva Czabarka

Faculty Publications

We prove an Erdős–Ko–Rado-type theorem for intersecting k-chains of subspaces of a finite vector space. This is the q-generalization of earlier results of Erdős, Seress and Székely for intersecting k-chains of subsets of an underlying set. The proof hinges on the author's proper generalization of the shift technique from extremal set theory to finite vector spaces, which uses a linear map to define the generalized shift operation. The theorem is the following.

For c = 0, 1, consider k-chains of subspaces of an n-dimensional vector space over GF(q), such that the smallest subspace in any chain has dimension at least …

Investigation Of Image Feature Extraction By A Genetic Algorithm, Steven P. Brumby, James P. Theiler, Simon J. Perkins, Neal R. Harvey, John J. Szymanski, Jeffrey J. Bloch, Melanie Mitchell

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

We describe the implementation and performance of a genetic algorithm which generates image feature extraction algorithms for remote sensing applications. We describe our basis set of primitive image operators and present our chromosomal representation of a complete algorithm. Our initial application has been geospatial feature extraction using publicly available multi-spectral aerial-photography data sets. We present the preliminary results of our analysis of the efficiency of the classic genetic operations of crossover and mutation for our application, and discuss our choice of evolutionary control parameters. We exhibit some of our evolved algorithms, and discuss possible avenues for future progress.

Mpeg-4 Systems And Applications, Hari Kalva, Lai-Tee Cheok, Alexandros Eleftheriadis Nov 1999

Mpeg-4 Systems And Applications, Hari Kalva, Lai-Tee Cheok, Alexandros Eleftheriadis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

MPEG-4, under the auspices of the ISO, is specifying tools to enable object-based audio-visual presentations [3]. These include tools to encode individual objects, compose presentations with objects, store these object-based presentations and access these presentations in a distributed manner over networks. The main distinguishing feature of object-based audio-visual presentations is the scene composition at the user terminal. The objects that are part of a scene are composed and displayed at the user end as opposed to encoding the composed scenes as is done in the case of MPEG-2. Such object-based representation and presentation has several benefits including compression efficiency and …

Cationic 5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(N-Methylpyridinium-4-Yl)Porphyrin Fully Intercalates At 5 '-Cg-3 ' Steps Of Duplex Dna In Solution, Anton B. Guliaev, Neocles B. Leontis

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The interaction of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(N-methylpyridinium-4-yl)p (T4MPyP(4+)) with the oligonucleotide DNA duplex [d(GCACGTGC)](2) was studied by two-dimensional (1)H NMR spectroscopy, optical absorbance, circular dichroism, and molecular dynamics simulation employing particle mesh Ewald methods. T4MPyP(4+) is one of the largest aromatic molecules for which intercalative binding to DNA has been proposed, although this has been called into question by recent X-ray crystallographic work [Lipscomb et al. (1996) Biochemistry 35, 2818-2823]. T4MPyP(4+) binding to [d(GCACGTGC)](2) produced a single set of (mostly) upfield-shifted DNA resonances in slow exchange with the resonances of the free DNA. Intra- and intermolecular NOEs observed in the complex showed that …

Groundwater Nutrient Loading In Biscayne Bay, Biscayne National Park, Florida, Michael James Byrne

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research documents submarine groundwater discharge along the shore of Biscayne Bay. Seepage meters and groundwater monitoring wells, between the outlets of Mowry and Military Canals, were used to quantify groundwater discharge, nutrient concentration and loading. Discharge is greatest 185 m offshore and then decreases to zero 400 m offshore. Total discharge is 20.6 m3 m-1 d-1. The location of discharge is controlled by distance from shore and sediment characteristics. Generally, nutrient concentrations were highest in groundwater flowing through seepage meters, followed in decreasing order; shallow groundwater, deep groundwater and surface water. The ratios of Mowry …

Resonant Enhancement Of Relativistic Electron Fluxes During Geomagnetically Active Periods, I Roth, M Temerin, M K. Hudson Oct 1999

Resonant Enhancement Of Relativistic Electron Fluxes During Geomagnetically Active Periods, I Roth, M Temerin, M K. Hudson

Dartmouth Scholarship

The strong increase in the ̄ux of relativistic electrons during the recovery phase of magnetic storms and during other active periods is investigated with the help of Hamiltonian formalism and simulations of test electrons which interact with whistler waves. The intensity of the whistler waves is enhanced signi®cantly due to injection of 10±100 keV electrons during the substorm. Electrons which drift in the gradient and curvature of the magnetic ®eld generate the rising tones of VLF whistler chorus. The seed population of relativ- istic electrons which bounce along the inhomogeneous magnetic ®eld, interacts resonantly with the whistler waves. Whistler wave …

Performance Of The Cleo Iii Lif-Tea Ring Imaging Cherenkov Detector In A High Energy Muon Beam, Raymond Mountain, Marina Artuso, R. Ayad, F. Azfar

Physics - All Scholarship

The CLEO III Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector uses LiF radiators to generate Cherenkov photons which are then detected by proportional wire chambers using a mixture of CH$_4$ and TEA gases. The first two photon detector modules which were constructed, were taken to Fermilab and tested in a beam dump that provided high momentum muons. We report on results using both plane and "sawtooth" shaped radiators. Specifically, we discuss the number of photoelectrons observed per ring and the angular resolution. The particle separation ability is shown to be sufficient for the physics of CLEO III.

Search For The Flavor-Changing Neutral Current Decays B+→ Μ+Μ-K+ And B0→ Μ+Μ-K*0, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decays B+→ μ+μ-K+ and i>B0→ μ+μ-K*0 using 88 pb-1 of data from p̅p collisions at √s =1.8 TeV, collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Finding no evidence for these decays, we set upper limits on the branching fractions Ɓ(B+→ μ+μ-K+) < 5.2 X 10-6 and Ɓ(B+→ μ+μ-K*0) -6 at the 90% confidence level.

Phase Imaging: Deep Or Superficial?, Nancy Burnham, O Behrend, L Odoni, J Loubet

Nancy A. Burnham

Phase images acquired while intermittently contacting a sample surface with the tip of an atomic force microscope cantilever are not easy to relate to material properties. We have simulated dynamic force curves and compared simulated with experimental results. For some cantilever–sample combinations, the interaction remains a surface effect, whereas for others, the tip penetrates the sample significantly. Height artifacts in the “topography” images, and the role of the sample stiffness, work of adhesion, damping, and topography in the cantilever response manifest themselves to different extents depending on the indentation depth.

MARGIE will be a large-area, wide field-of-view, hard x- ray/gamma-ray imaging telescope capable of providing accurate positions for faint gamma-ray bursts in near-real- time and of performing a sensitive survey of both steady and transient cosmic sources. The instrument is designed to image faint bursts at the low-intensity end of the log N - log S distribution. MARGIE was recently selected by NASA for a mission-concept study for an Ultra Long Duration Balloon flight. We describe a program to develop an instrument based on the new detector technology of either cadmium zinc telluride room-temperature semiconductors or pixelated cesium iodide scintillators …

The FiberGLAST scintillating fiber telescope is a large-area instrument concept for NASA's GLAST program. The detector is designed for high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, and uses plastic scintillating fibers to combine a photon pair tracking telescope and a calorimeter into a single instrument. A small prototype detector has been tested with high energy photons at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. We report on the result of this beam test, including scintillating fiber performance, photon track reconstruction, angular resolution, and detector efficiency.

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We simulate H-2 adsorbed within zeolite Na-A. We use a block Lanczos procedure to generate the first several (9) rotational eigenstates of the molecule, which is modeled as a rigid, quantum rotor with an anisotropic polarizability and quadrupole moment. The rotor interacts with Na cations and O anions; interaction parameters are chosen semiempirically and the truncation of electrostatic fields is handled with a switching function. A Monte Carlo proceedure is used to sample a set of states based on the canonical distribution. Potential energy surfaces, favorable adsorbtion sites, and distributions of barriers to rotation are analyzed. Separation factors for ortho-parahydrogen …

Inflation And Preheating In Nonoscillatory Models, Gary Felder, Lev Kofman, Andrei Linde Oct 1999

Inflation And Preheating In Nonoscillatory Models, Gary Felder, Lev Kofman, Andrei Linde

Physics: Faculty Publications

We study inflationary models in which the effective potential of the inflaton field does not have a minimum, but rather gradually decreases at large φ. In such models the inflaton field does not oscillate after inflation, and its effective mass becomes vanishingly small, so the standard theory of reheating based on the decay of the oscillating inflaton field does not apply. For a long time the only mechanism of reheating in such non-oscillatory (NO) models was based on gravitational particle production in an expanding universe. This mechanism is very inefficient. We will show that it may lead to cosmological problems …

If the technicolor ωT particle exists, a likely decay mode is ωT→ γπT , followed by πTbb̅, yielding the signature γbb̅. We have searched 85 pb-1 of data collected by the CDF experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron for events with a photon and two jets, where one of the jets must contain a secondary vertex implying the presence of a b quark. We find no excess of events above standard model expectations. We express the result as an exclusion region in the MωT -MπT …

Multifragment emission following 129Xe+197Au collisions at 30A, 40A, 50A, and 60A MeV has been studied with multidetector systems covering nearly 4π in solid angle. The correlations of both the intermediate mass fragment and light charged particle multiplicities with the transverse energy are explored. A comparison is made with results from a similar system 136Xe+209Bi at 28A MeV. The experimental trends are compared to statistical model predictions.

Chiral Lagrangian Treatment Of Pi Eta Scattering, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz Oct 1999

Chiral Lagrangian Treatment Of Pi Eta Scattering, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz

Physics - All Scholarship

We study pi eta scattering in a model which starts from the tree diagrams of a non-linear chiral Lagrangian including appropriate resonances. Previously, models of this type were applied to pi pi and pi K scattering and were seen to require the existence of light scalar sigma(560) and kappa(900) mesons and to be consistent with the f0(980). The present calculation extends this to include the a0(980), thereby completing a possible nonet of light scalars, all ``seen'' in the same manner. We note that, at the initial level, the pi eta channel is considerably cleaner than the pi pi and pi …
