A Two-Dimensional Analytic Tidal Model For A Narrow Estuary Of Arbitrary Lateral Depth Variation: The Intratidal Motion, Chunyan Li, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson Jan 1999

A Two-Dimensional Analytic Tidal Model For A Narrow Estuary Of Arbitrary Lateral Depth Variation: The Intratidal Motion, Chunyan Li, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson

CCPO Publications

An innovative method is introduced to solve a two-dimensional, depth-averaged analytic model for narrow estuaries or tidal channels with arbitrary lateral depth variations. The solution is valid if the lateral variation of the amplitude of tidal elevation (\Delta a\) is small, i.e., \Delta a\ much less than a, where a is the amplitude of the tidal elevation. This assumption is supported by a 60-day observation of elevation in the James River Estuary using pressure sensors at both sides of a cross section of the estuary. The error introduced by the solution is of the order of \Delta a\/a, which has …

Warm Water Formation And Escape In The Upper Tropical Atlantic Ocean - 1. A Literature Review, Sang-Ki Lee, G. T. Csanady Jan 1999

Warm Water Formation And Escape In The Upper Tropical Atlantic Ocean - 1. A Literature Review, Sang-Ki Lee, G. T. Csanady

CCPO Publications

We review current understanding of the warm water formation and escape process in the tropical Atlantic Ocean and point out the physical aspects of the process not yet fully explored. From this review, we found a need for a simple model capable of describing the first-order heat and mass balance in the tropical Atlantic Ocean. This line of work is continued in part 2 [Lee and Csanady, this issue]. Copyright 1999 by the American Geophysical Union.

Analyzing Mean Transport Equations Of Turbulence And Linear Disturbances In Decaying Flows, W. D. Thacker, T. B. Gatski, C. E. Grosch Jan 1999

Analyzing Mean Transport Equations Of Turbulence And Linear Disturbances In Decaying Flows, W. D. Thacker, T. B. Gatski, C. E. Grosch

CCPO Publications

The decay of laminar disturbances and turbulence in mean shear-free flows is studied. In laminar flows, such disturbances are linear superpositions of modes governed by the Orr-Sommerfeld equation. In turbulent flows, disturbances are described through transport equations for representative mean quantities. The link between a description based on a deterministic evolution equation and a probability-based mean transport equation is established. Because an uncertainty in initial conditions exists in the laminar as well as the turbulent regime, a probability distribution must be defined even in the laminar case. Using this probability distribution, it is shown that the exponential decay of the …

Development Of A Model For Smart Card Based Access Control In Multi-User, Multi-Resource, Multi-Level Access Systems, David Shaw Jan 1999

Development Of A Model For Smart Card Based Access Control In Multi-User, Multi-Resource, Multi-Level Access Systems, David Shaw

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The primary focus of this research is an examination of the issues involved in the granting of access in an environment characterised by multiple users, multiple resources and multiple levels of access permission. Increasing levels of complexity in automotive systems provides opportunities for improving the integration and efficiency of the services provided to the operator. The vehicle lease / hire environment provided a basis for evaluating conditional access to distributed, mobile assets where the principal medium for operating in this environment is the Smart Card. The application of Smart Cards to existing vehicle management systems requires control of access to …

Methods In Historical Ecology: A Case Study Of Tintic Valley, Utah, Jeffrey A. Creque, Neil E. West, James P. Dobrowolski Jan 1999

Methods In Historical Ecology: A Case Study Of Tintic Valley, Utah, Jeffrey A. Creque, Neil E. West, James P. Dobrowolski

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Through use of repeat photography, archival research, and field observation to reconstruct landscape vegetation patterns and changes across a 120 year period in the upper Tintic Valley of central Utah, researchers found significant changes in landscape vegetation pattern over time, including change in pinyon-juniper woodland area. Previously reported massive woodland harvest associated with early mining, domestic and agricultural activities elsewhere in the Intermountain West also took place in Utah. The impact on woodland area of the agricultural "bull" fence alone was significant. More recent study area woodland expansion also occurred. Because intensive industrial activity associated with development of the Tintic …

The Effects Of Urbanization And Human Disturbance Upon Plant Community Structure And Bird Species Richness, Diversity, And Abundance In A Natural Forested Area (Forest Park) In Portland, Oregon, Nancy Ellen Broshot Jan 1999

The Effects Of Urbanization And Human Disturbance Upon Plant Community Structure And Bird Species Richness, Diversity, And Abundance In A Natural Forested Area (Forest Park) In Portland, Oregon, Nancy Ellen Broshot

Dissertations and Theses

The effects of urbanization and continual human disturbance on the plant and avian communities of Forest Park and forested lands surrounding Portland, Oregon, were studied. I examined characteristics of plant and avian communities at 25 sites, 24 which were in Forest Park and surrounding areas and one which was in the Ancient Forest Preserve (old-growth stand) northwest of Forest Park. Data were analyzed using multiple regression, ANOV A, and Bonferonni/Dunn. Seven variables were selected representing different urbanization gradients. An additional covariable coded for the old-growth stand, allowing it to be used as a control.

Many tree variables, especially those related …

In-Situ Measurement Of Denitrification In The Elk Valley Aquifer, Allen Schlag Jan 1999

In-Situ Measurement Of Denitrification In The Elk Valley Aquifer, Allen Schlag

Theses and Dissertations

Groundwater serves more than half of North Dakota's population as a drinking water source. Nitrate (NO₃¯) is a common groundwater contaminant associated with fertilizers, septic systems and livestock waste in shallow unconfined aquifers. As a suspected carcinogen and cause of potentially lethal methemoglobinemia in infants, the natural attenuation of NO₃¯ by denitrification can be an important process in keeping groundwater as a reliable source of clean drinking water for North Dakota. Organic carbon is often considered the most important electron donor for the chemical reduction of NO₃¯ into harmless nitrogen gas. However, several studies have shown that inorganic electron donors …

A Fluid Inclusion And Structural Analysis Of The West Chance Vein System, Sunshine Mine, Kellogg, Idaho, David S. (David Scott) Boyer Jan 1999

A Fluid Inclusion And Structural Analysis Of The West Chance Vein System, Sunshine Mine, Kellogg, Idaho, David S. (David Scott) Boyer

WWU Graduate School Collection

The Sunshine mine, near Kellogg ID, is a mesothermal Ag-Pb vein deposit in the Coeur d’Alene mining district. Proterozoic siliciclastic rocks of the Ravalli Group, Belt Supergroup, host the ore bodies. The recently discovered West Chance ore body has been under development for the past five years. This tabular ore body strikes west and dips steeply to the south, has 300m (~1000 ft) strike length and extends approximately 914m (~3000 ft) down dip. Ore is located where the WNW-striking Chance fault changes to a predominately west-striking structure. This study consists of a fluid inclusion and structural analysis of the West …

Seismic Characterization Of The Northern Puget Lowland, Washington, Lori K. (Lori Kelly) Roberts Jan 1999

Seismic Characterization Of The Northern Puget Lowland, Washington, Lori K. (Lori Kelly) Roberts

WWU Graduate School Collection

Records show that thousands of earthquakes have occurred in the northern Puget Lowland since 1969. At least fifteen of these events have been greater than magnitude 4, and one (Deming mag. 5.2, 1990) was the second largest recorded shallow crustal event in Washington for the last hundred years. Despite the evidence that suggests that the potential for great earthquakes capable of severe damage in the northern Puget Lowland is very real, the seismicity in the area is poorly understood. This is in part due to the wide scattering and apparently random assortment of recorded events. This thesis attempts to create …
