Bridger Formation Sandstones Used As An Indication Of Tectonics In The Green River Basin And Western Wyoming, Lisa S. Novins Jan 1999

Bridger Formation Sandstones Used As An Indication Of Tectonics In The Green River Basin And Western Wyoming, Lisa S. Novins

Honors Papers

Sandstone from the Eocene Bridger Formation of southwestern Wyoming can be used as a tool to constrain the timing and order of controversial tectonic events in the region. The key tectonic element in this region is the Wind River Range. Sandstones in the Bridger were derived from two source areas to the north, one being the basement rocks from the Wind River Range and the other volcanic rocks from the Absaroka Volcanic field (AVF). The abundance of volcanic grains increases upsection in the Bridger indicating that more volcanic material was carried through the Wind River Range. This evidence supports the …

Description And Taphonomy Of A Turtle Assemblage (Chelonia: Trionychidae) In The Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene), Billings County, North Dakota, Glenn B. Kays Jan 1999

Description And Taphonomy Of A Turtle Assemblage (Chelonia: Trionychidae) In The Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene), Billings County, North Dakota, Glenn B. Kays

Theses and Dissertations

Soft-shelled turtle fossils (Family: Trionychidae) are common in Late Mesozoic and Early Cenozoic freshwater terrestrial deposits throughout western North America. Taxonomy of the Trionychidae is confusing for two reasons: 1) there are differences of opinion as to which characters are important in defining the lower systematic groups; 2) trionychid fossil material is often incomplete and fragmentary and has been used as the basis for numerous taxonomic descriptions.

The Ash Coulee Quarry is a fossil turtle assemblage located within the lower portion of the Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene) in Billings County, North Dakota. This quarry has produced at least 40 individual …

Field Methods To Enhance Degradation Of Nitrate In Surficial Soils, Urko Atxotegi Alegria Jan 1999

Field Methods To Enhance Degradation Of Nitrate In Surficial Soils, Urko Atxotegi Alegria

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

An environmental field study was conducted from April to October 1998 in the Black Hawk County, Iowa. The main goal of the study was to find an appropriate field method to enhance degradation of nitrates in the surficial soil. Seven different methods were developed in the study to compare between four variables. The variables that were investigated were the source of nitrates, the moisture content of the soil, the uptake by plants and the total carbon content of the soil. The investigation has also been conducted to find out the specific influence of each parameter on landuse. A weather station …

Observational Limit On Gravitational Waves From Binary Neutron Stars In The Galaxy, B. Allen, J. K. Blackburn, J. D. Creighton, Teviet Creighton

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Using optimal matched filtering, we search 25 hours of data from the LIGO 40-m prototype laser interferometric gravitational-wave detector for gravitational-wave chirps emitted by coalescing binary systems within our Galaxy. This is the first test of this filtering technique on real interferometric data. An upper limit on the rate R of neutron star binary inspirals in our Galaxy is obtained: with 90% confidence, R<0.5h−1. Similar experiments with LIGO interferometers will provide constraints on the population of tight binary neutron star systems in the Universe.

Continuous Deflection Separation Of Stormwater Particulates, Tracy S. Schwarz, Scott A. Wells Jan 1999

Continuous Deflection Separation Of Stormwater Particulates, Tracy S. Schwarz, Scott A. Wells

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Capture of stormwater particulate matter is of concern to watershed managers trying to meet water quality guidelines by removing toxics associated with particulates from natural water bodies. A laboratory investigation into particle removal efficiency of a prototype Continuous Deflective Separation (CDS) device was made in the laboratory. Particle size distributions were obtained for roadway drainage surfaces. These distributions were used to assess the predicted performance of a CDS unit in the field.

Flow rates in the laboratory tests ranged from 125 GPM (7.9 l/s) to 270 GPM (17.0 l/s). Screen sizes used for testing were 1200 m and 2400 m. …

Hydrogeology And Paleohydrology In The Williamson River Basin, Klamath County, Oregon, Jeffrey Scott Conaway Jan 1999

Hydrogeology And Paleohydrology In The Williamson River Basin, Klamath County, Oregon, Jeffrey Scott Conaway

Dissertations and Theses

Stress on the water resources of the Williamson River basin has led to their regulation to protect important habitat. Quantification of this resource is required for accurate regulation. A portion of this study is a hydrogeologic reconnaissance that suggests directions for future work. Measured discharge and deuterium isotope data from points above and below the Williamson River canyon indicate that the river receives 99% of its discharge from ground water during periods of low flow. The principle aquifer of the southern Klamath Marsh is a fractured basalt, while continental sediments that are up to 200 m thick provide high artesian …

Synthesis Of Bulk Polycrystalline Indium Nitride At Subatmospheric Pressures., Jeffrey Dyck, K. Kash, C. Hayman, A. Argoitia, M. Grossner, J. Angus, W.-L. Zhou

Jeffrey Dyck

Polycrystalline, wurtzitic indium nitride was synthesized by saturating indium with nitrogen from microwave plasma sources. The structure was confirmed by x-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, and elemental analysis. Two types of growth were observed: (i) dendritic crystals on the original melt surface, and (ii) hexagonal platelets adjacent to the In metal source on the upper edge of the crucible. The method does not involve a foreign substrate to initiate growth and is a potential alternative to the high-pressure techniques normally associated with bulk growth of indium nitride. The lattice parameters were a = 3.5366 ± 0.0005 angstrom and c = 5.7009 …

Growth Of Oriented Thick Films Of Gallium Nitride From The Melt., Jeffrey Dyck, K. Kash, M. Grossner, C. Hayman, A. Argoitia, N. Yang, M.-H. Hong, M. Kordesch, J. Angus Dec 1998

Growth Of Oriented Thick Films Of Gallium Nitride From The Melt., Jeffrey Dyck, K. Kash, M. Grossner, C. Hayman, A. Argoitia, N. Yang, M.-H. Hong, M. Kordesch, J. Angus

Jeffrey Dyck

While significant strides have been made in the optimization of GaN-based devices on foreign substrates, a more attractive alternative would be homoepitaxy on GaN substrates. The primary motivation of this work is to explore the growth of thick films of GaN from the melt for the ultimate use as substrate material. We have previously demonstrated the synthesis of polycrystalline, wurtzitic gallium nitride and indium nitride by saturating gallium metal and indium metal with atomic nitrogen from a microwave plasma source. Plasma synthesis avoids the high equilibrium pressures required when molecular nitrogen is used as the nitrogen source. Here we report …

Consumption Adjustment Under Time-Varying Income Uncertainty, Douglas Steigerwald, Joon-Ho Hahm Dec 1998

Consumption Adjustment Under Time-Varying Income Uncertainty, Douglas Steigerwald, Joon-Ho Hahm

Douglas G. Steigerwald

We study the effect of income uncertainty on consumption in a model that includes precautionary saving. In contrast to previous studies, we focus on time-series variation in income uncertainty. Our time-series measure of income uncertainty is constructed from a panel of forecasts. We find evidence of precautionary saving in that increases in income uncertainty are related to increases in aggregate rates of saving. We also find evidence that anticipated income growth rates have less explanatory power for consumption growth rates after conditioning on income uncertainty. The evidence indicates the presence of forward-looking consumers who gradually adjust precautionary savings in response …

Alternative Polynomial And Holomorphic Dunford-Pettis Properties, Walden Freedman Dec 1998

Alternative Polynomial And Holomorphic Dunford-Pettis Properties, Walden Freedman

Walden Freedman

Alternatives to the Polynomial Dunford-Pettis property and the Holomorphic Dunford-Pettis property, called the PDP1 and HDP1 properties, respectively, are introduced. These are shown to be equivalent to the DP1 property, an alternative Dunford-Pettis property previously introduced by the author, thus mirroring the equivalence of the three original properties.

Indexing Flower Patent Images Using Domain Knowledge, Madirakshi Das, R. Manmatha, Edward M. Riseman Dec 1998

Indexing Flower Patent Images Using Domain Knowledge, Madirakshi Das, R. Manmatha, Edward M. Riseman

R. Manmatha

A new approach to indexing a specialized database by utilizing the color and spatial domain knowledge available for the database is described. This approach is illustrated by using it to provide a solution to the problem of indexing images of flowers for searching a flower patents database by color. The flower region is isolated from the background by using an automatic iterative segmentation algorithm with domain knowledge-driven feedback. The color of the flower is defined by the color names present in the flower region and their relative proportions. The database can be queried by example and by color names. The …

A Synthesis Of Lead Isotopes In Two Millennia Of European Air, Charles Dunlap, Eiliv Steinnes, A. Russell Flegal Dec 1998

A Synthesis Of Lead Isotopes In Two Millennia Of European Air, Charles Dunlap, Eiliv Steinnes, A. Russell Flegal

Charles Dunlap

Four airborne particulate records from ombrotrophic peat bogs in southern Norway, extending back 300 years, have been measured for chronology, lead concentration, and lead isotope composition. Since southern Norway receives an airborne lead signal that accumulates emissions from the European continent, the trend in the four bog records can be used to correlate previously reported measurements from France, Switzerland, England, and Greenland that cover different ranges of time. When these are compiled, the integrated European record that emerges spans the last 2300 years of human influence on lead in the air over Europe and suggests human control of lead in …

Oxidation Of Benzoins To Benzils Using Bismuth(Iii) Nitrate-Copper(Ii) Acetate, Ram S. Mohan, Steven A. Tymonko, Bryce A. Nattier Dec 1998

Oxidation Of Benzoins To Benzils Using Bismuth(Iii) Nitrate-Copper(Ii) Acetate, Ram S. Mohan, Steven A. Tymonko, Bryce A. Nattier

Ram S. Mohan

Benzoins are oxidized to benzils in excellent yields by 0.4 equivalents of Bi(NO3)3.5H20 and 4 mol% of Cu(OAc)23)3.5H20 is a stable, inexpensive, commercially available solid. The relatively low cost and low toxicity of bismuth(Ill) nitrate makes this procedure a particularly attractive method for oxidation of benzoins.

Multi-Modal Retrieval Of Trademark Images Using Global Similarity, S Ravela, R. Manmatha Dec 1998

Multi-Modal Retrieval Of Trademark Images Using Global Similarity, S Ravela, R. Manmatha

R. Manmatha

In this paper a system for multi-modal retrieval of trademark images is presented. Images are characterized and retrieved using associated text and visual appearance. A user initiates retrieval for similar trademarks by typing a text query. Subsequent searches can be performed by visual appearance or using both appearance and text information. Textual information associated with trademarks is searched using the INQUERY search engine. Images are searched visually using a method for global image similarity by appearance developed in this paper. Images are filtered with Gaussian derivatives and geometric features are computed from the filtered images. The geometric features used here …

Conjugate Schema In The Hp Heteropolymer Model Of Protein Folding And Protein, S. Kazadi, H. Lin, S. Ogita, Dela Tsikata Dec 1998

Conjugate Schema In The Hp Heteropolymer Model Of Protein Folding And Protein, S. Kazadi, H. Lin, S. Ogita, Dela Tsikata

Sanza Kazadi

Conjugate schema are computational tools that allow for the identification of independent blocks of vector components. These allow researchers to focus their efforts on optimizations within blocks of vector components that are codependant, rather than using the entire vector. Protein design and protein folding, already having been tackled using genetic algorithms, are natural candidates as computational problems whose solution is aided by the use of conjugate schema. We present work on protein folding and protein design in the HP heteropolymer model indicating that such usage is warrented and beneficial.
