At the Centre for Advanced Information Systems (CAIS), a Web warehousing system is being developed to store and manipulate Web information. The system named WHOWEDA (WareHouse Of WEb DAta) stores extracted Web information as Web tables and provides several Web operators, eg. Web join, Web select, global coupling, etc., to manipulate Web tables. During the implementation of WHOWEDA, it is necessary to perform systematic testing on the system and to evaluate its system performance. While it is possible for WHOWEDA to be tested or evaluated using actual Web pages downloaded from WWW, the amount of time required for such testing …

In this paper, we discuss mining with respect to web data referred here as web data mining. In particular, our focus is on web data mining research in context of our web warehousing project called WHOWEDA (Warehouse of Web Data). We have categorized web data mining into threes areas; web content mining, web structure mining and web usage mining. We have highlighted and discussed various research issues involved in each of these web data mining category. We believe that web data mining will be the topic of exploratory research in near future.

Conventional search engines locate information by letting users establish a single web checkpoint1. By specifying one or more keywords, users direct search engines to return a set of documents that contain those keywords. From the documents (links) returned by search engines, user proceed to further probe the WWW from there. Hence, these initial set of documents (contingent upon the occurrence of keyword(s)) serve as a web checkpoint. Generally, these links are numerous and may not result in much fruitful searches. By establishing multiple web checkpoints, a richer and controllable search procedure can be constructed to obtain more relevant Web information. …

Abecos is an agent-based e-commerce system under development at the Nanyang Technological University. A key factor in making this system usable in practice is strict security controls. One aspect of security is the provision of non-repudiation services. As protocols for non-repudiation have focused on -message non-repudiation, its adaptation to afford non-repudiation in a communication session for two agents in Abecos is inefficient. In this work, we investigate and propose a protocol for enforcing non-repudiation in a session. The protocol is believed to be applicable in any e-commerce system; agent- or not agent-based.
On The Semivalues And The Power Core Of Cooperative Tu Games, Juan-Enrique Martínez-Legaz, Irinel C. Dragan
On The Semivalues And The Power Core Of Cooperative Tu Games, Juan-Enrique Martínez-Legaz, Irinel C. Dragan
Mathematics Technical Papers
The Semivalues were introduced axiomatically by P.Dubey, A.Neyman and R.J.Weber (1981) as an important class of values for cooperative TU games. This class contains the Shapley value, the Banzhaf value, and many other values. For the Shapley value characterizations of games for which the Shapley value is coalitionally rational are due to Inarra and Usategui (1993), Izawa and Takahashi (1998), and Marin-Solano and Rafels (1999). In this paper the same problem of coalitional rationality is discussed for Semivalues, by using special formulas for the computation of Semivalues. The characterization shows that this is a prosperity property as defined by Van …
A Review Of Automated Stellar Spectral Classification And Surveys, Ted Von Hippel, Coryn A.L. Bailer-Jones
A Review Of Automated Stellar Spectral Classification And Surveys, Ted Von Hippel, Coryn A.L. Bailer-Jones
Publications
Modern spectroscopic surveys and automated classifiers are becoming so inextricably linked that it is difficult even to summarize one without discussing the other. Some of the automated classifiers are being built because of current analysis needs, though with a clear anticipation of future, larger surveys. Other automated classifiers are being designed specifically for future surveys. Automated classifiers may be applied to databases already in hand, to real-time analysis at the telescope, or one day to on-board satellite analysis where the raw data are too bulky to save and transmit. In addition, many current spectroscopic surveys target galaxies. These surveys may …
Behavioral Analysis And Enrichment Effects On Captive Red Wolves, Laurie Thompson
Behavioral Analysis And Enrichment Effects On Captive Red Wolves, Laurie Thompson
Honors Theses
The red wolf, Canis rufus, is a highly endangered predator native to the eastern United States. Their original range is thought to have extended from as far west as Texas all the way to the east coast, and as far south as Florida and north to at least the Ohio River valley. Their decline is attributed to human encroachment causing loss of habitat, persecution of the species, and extensive hybridization with coyotes, Canis latrans, once their numbers began to diminish (Riley and McBride, 1972). In addition to these problems, parasites have had a substantial effect on their already dwindling numbers …

Thermal Decomposition Of Cross-Linked Polybutadiene And Its Copolymers, David D. Jiang, Galina F. Levchik, Sergei V. Levchik, Charles Wilkie
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Polybutadiene and two copolymers containing butadiene and styrene have been cross-linked by thermal processes, by the use of initiators in solution, and by intimately mixing an initiator with the polymer and then heating this blend. The most efficient cross-linking process is the use of an intimate blend of the initiator and polymer. Most cross-linking processes lower the onset temperature of degradation, presumably because chain scission reactions occur simultaneously with cross-linking, while also increasing the fraction of non-volatile residue which is produced. It is believed that the density of cross-links is responsible for the increased yield of non-volatile residue.
A Simplified Model Of Wound Healing (With Particular Reference To The Critical Size Defect), J. A. Adam
A Simplified Model Of Wound Healing (With Particular Reference To The Critical Size Defect), J. A. Adam
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
This paper is an attempt to construct a simple mathematical model of wound healing/tissue regeneration which reproduces some of the known qualitative features of those phenomena. It does not address the time development of the wound in any way, but does examine conditions (e.g., wound size) under which such healing may occur. Two related one-dimensional models are examined here. The first, and simpler of the two corresponds to a "swath" of tissue (or more realistically in this case, bone) removed from an infinite plane of tissue in which only a thin band of tissue at the wound edges takes part …

Reservation-based scheduling delivers a proportion of the CPU to jobs over a period of time. In this paper we argue that automatically determining and assigning this period is both possible and useful in general purpose soft real-time environments such as personal computers and information appliances. The goal of period adaptation is to select the period over which a job is guaranteed to receive its portion of the CPU dynamically and automatically. The choice of period represents a trade-off between the amount of jitter observed by the job and the overall efficiency of the system. Secondary effects of period include quantization …
Qos Scalability For Streamed Media Delivery, Charles Krasic, Jonathan Walpole
Qos Scalability For Streamed Media Delivery, Charles Krasic, Jonathan Walpole
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Applications with real-rate progress requirements, such as mediastreaming systems, are difficult to deploy in shared heterogenous environments such as the Internet. On the Internet, mediastreaming systems must be capable of trading off resource requirements against the quality of the media streams they deliver, in order to match wide-ranging dynamic variations in bandwidth between servers and clients. Since quality requirements tend to be user- and task-specific, mechanisms for capturing quality of service requirements and mapping them to appropriate resource-level adaptation policies are required. In this paper, we describe a general approach for automatically mapping user-level quality of service specifications onto resource …

Report On Spectral Wave Modeling : Extended Study Of The Effects Of Sand Mining On The Wave Regime At Sandbridge, Virginia - Comparison Of Results Using A Phase-Revolving And A Phase-Averaging Spectral Wave Model (Ref/Dif S And Swan), John D. Boon, Sung Chan Kim
Reports
In an earlier report (Boon, 1998), findings were presented from a wave modeling study whose purpose was to investigate the effects of sand mining on the nearshore wave regime at Sandbridge, Virginia (Fig . 1). Using a phase-resolving spectral wave model, REF/DIF S (Kirby and Ozkan, 1992), a representative set of hypothetical storm waves was propagated across a 20 km section of the inner shelf from approximately the 20 m depth contour offshore to the 11 m depth contour inshore . Subsequent simulations were then made that tested local effects of shoaling and refraction on wave heights within a fine-scale …
Formal Representation And Application Of Software Design Information, Thomas M. Schorsch
Formal Representation And Application Of Software Design Information, Thomas M. Schorsch
Theses and Dissertations
Formal methods for developing software use mathematical frameworks to specify, develop and verify software systems, especially safety critical systems where error free software is a necessity. A transformation system is a formal method that refines a requirement specification into an implementation by successively adding design decisions in the form of precisely verified design information. Current algebraic representations of design information (specifications, morphisms, and interpretations) and methods for applying algebraic specification design information (diagram refinement) cannot correctly represent and apply design information involving higher level design information. This investigation develops innovative methods for constructing and refining structured algebraic requirement specifications, as …

Ecological Functions Of Constructed Oyster Reefs Along An Environmental Gradient In Chesapeake Bay: Final Report, Fx O'Beirn, Mark Luckenbach, Roger L. Mann, J Harding, J Nestlerode
Reports
Oyster reef habitat restoration within the Chesapeake Bay has as its objectives not only the enhancement of the commercially important oyster stocks, but also the restoration of associated assemblages of organisms and, most importantly, the restoration of ecological functions associated with natural reef communities. Despite our efforts to date, many uncertainties still exist with respect to achieving these restoration goals. These include long-term information on the temporal sequence of community development on new reef substrate, evaluating oyster recruitment patterns (a) across restored reef systems and (b) in relation to resident brood stocks.
In this study we sought to characterize the …
Glueball Production In Peripheral Heavy-Ion Collisions, Alec Schramm
Glueball Production In Peripheral Heavy-Ion Collisions, Alec Schramm
Alec J Schramm
The method of equivalent quanta is applied both to photon-photon and, by analogy, to double pomeron exchange in heavy-ion collisions. This Weizsäcker-Williams approach is used to calculate production cross sections for the glueball candidate fJ(1710) meson via photon-photon and pomeron-pomeron fusion in peripheral heavy-ion collisions at both RHIC and LHC energies. The impact parameter dependence for total and elastic cross sections is presented, and compared with results for proton-proton collisions.

We demonstrate a scheme to pattern vacuum-deposited, small molecular weight organic light emitting diodes OLEDs. Both the organic thin films and the metallic electrodes are patterned by shifting the position of a single shadow mask which accompanies the substrate throughout the deposition process. A full color, stacked OLED SOLED has been fabricated using this technique. The substrate movement relative to the mask was manually controlled to a root mean square accuracy of 8 m using a mask translating fixture. The performance of the patterned SOLED is comparable with that of devices fabricated by conventional, low tolerance methods. The limits to …
Antarctic's Role Pursued In Global Climate Change, Paul Andrew Mayewski, I. Goodwin
Antarctic's Role Pursued In Global Climate Change, Paul Andrew Mayewski, I. Goodwin
Earth Science Faculty Scholarship
The impact of Antarctica on global climate change and the impact of global climate change on Antarctica are the focal points of a current series of expeditions there, and an international, interdisciplinary array of researchers met this past spring to go over the expeditions' progress. Advances were reported in describing the impact of the seasonal cycle, semiannual oscillation, and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle on Antarctic accumulation in recent decades.
Difficulties still remain, however, in explaining fully the history and forcing of the Antarctic climate and the links between tropical forcing and high-latitude response. The difficulties arise largely because …

Protein And Endotoxin Interactions And Endotoxin Removal From Protein Solutions, Liping Li
Dissertations
The investigation objectives of this study include: endotoxin disaggregation by proteins; protein concentration effect on protein-endotoxin binding and endotoxin removal; size exclusion high performance liquid chromatography (SE-HPLC) studies on endotoxin dissociation by bovin serum albumin (BSA); use of Ca+2 to re-aggregate endotoxin in hemoglobin solutions and the subsequent removal of endotoxin by ultrafiltration; quantitative determination of Ca+2 effects on endotoxin removal and protein yield in a two-stage ultrafiltration.
It is known that some proteins can disaggregate endotoxins and form complexes with lipopolysaccharides (LPS). It is also known that Ca can act as "bridges" to aggregate LPS in aqueous …

Protection Of The New York City Water Supply Land Development Threats And The Programs To Control Them, Werner Mueller
Theses
The Surface Water Treatment Rule under the Safe Drinking Water Act requires that all surface water sources used for drinking water must be filtered, unless the purveyor can demonstrate that the water is of such high quality that filtration is not required. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) operates the New York City water supply system and is taking actions to ensure that the water supplied from the Catskill -- Delaware system remains of high enough quality to maintain an avoidance of filtration determination granted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). New watershed rules and regulations have …
Comparative Molecular Field Analysis (Comfa) Of Phenyl Ring Substituted Methylphenidates, Milind Misra
Comparative Molecular Field Analysis (Comfa) Of Phenyl Ring Substituted Methylphenidates, Milind Misra
Theses
Comparative Molecular Field Analysis (CoMFA) was performed on 30 methylphenidate analogues having phenyl ring substituents at the 2-, 3-, and 4-positions in an attempt to explain the structure-activity relationships of the analogues. Several CoMFA studies were carried out using different conformations of methylphenidate as the template structures for the corresponding alignment rules. The identification of the bioactive conformation was variously based on the interfeature distances in WIN 35,428, on cluster analysis, and on a comparison of active methylphenidate analogues. The sensitivity of the models to various CoMFA parameters was compared. These parameters included altering the size and spacing of the …

Agents are emerging technology that is making computer systems easier to use by allowing people (computer users) to delegate work back to the computer. They act on user's behalf and achieve user's goals. The advent of these software agents gave rise to much discussion of just what such an agent is, and of how they differ from programs in general. Agents are in research area for a long time. Earlier they were considered a part of just Artificial Intelligence. Nowadays they are just not in research area anymore. Commercial agent based applications are existing in the market because of the …

Long-Lived Localized Field Configurations In Small Lattices: Application To Oscillons, M. Gleiser, A. Sornborger
Long-Lived Localized Field Configurations In Small Lattices: Application To Oscillons, M. Gleiser, A. Sornborger
Dartmouth Scholarship
Long-lived localized field configurations such as breathers, oscillons, or more complex objects naturally arise in the context of a wide range of nonlinear models in different numbers of spatial dimensions. We present a numerical method, which we call the adiabatic damping method, designed to study such configurations in small lattices. Using three-dimensional oscillons in φ4 models as an example, we show that the method accurately (to one part in 105 or better) reproduces results obtained with static or dynamically expanding lattices, dramatically cutting down in integration time. We further present results for two-dimensional oscillons, whose lifetimes would be prohibitively …

The Ac Impedance Analysis For Pluse Oxide Film Of Aluminium Alloy, Ailing Du, Xicheng Ma, Heming Zhang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Bode diagrams for aluminum PC (abbreviated from pulse current) oxide films were first obtained by AC impedance measurements in a wide range of frequency. The experimental results show that different kinds of electrical equivalent circuits can be used for representing PC films and DC (abbreviated from direct current) oxide films separately, the main differences between them are their porous layers, the PC films are more even with little defects. Those are also verified by SEM and V I characteristic curve measurements.
