A First Principles Warm Inflation Model That Solves The Cosmological Horizon And Flatness Problems, Arjun Berera, Marcelo Gleiser, Rudnei O. Ramos
Dartmouth Scholarship
A quantum field theory warm inflation model is presented that solves the horizon and flatness problems. The model obtains, from the elementary dynamics of particle physics, cosmological scale factor trajectories that begin in a radiation dominated regime, enter an inflationary regime, and then smoothly exit back into a radiation dominated regime, with non-negligible radiation throughout the evolution.

Afm And Spr Studies Of Protein Adsorption At Solid/Liquid Interface, Rafael Arechabaleta
Afm And Spr Studies Of Protein Adsorption At Solid/Liquid Interface, Rafael Arechabaleta
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Membrane-like structure formed by surfactant molecules of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) on both HOPG and gold electrodes were studied with AFM and SPR techniques. The study shows that the thickness of the adsorbed layer of DDAB is strongly dependent on the concentration of the vesicle solution.
We have also investigated the adsorption of redox protein, Cytochrome c, on graphite electrode with in situ tapping mode AFM. The protein adsorbs spontaneously onto the electrode covered with an adsorbed phosphate layer and forms a uniform monolayer. The adsorbed protein exhibits a reversible electron transfer at 0.17 V (Ag/AgCI) once the electrode potential has …

An Ultraviolet Fe Ii Image Of Sn 1885 In M31, Andrew Js Hamilton, Robert A. Fesen
Dartmouth Scholarship
Ultraviolet imaging of the remnant of Supernova 1885 in M31 with the Hubble Space Telescope using the F255W filter on the WFPC2 reveals a dark spot of Fe II absorption at the remnant’s known position′′ ′′in the bulge of M31. The diameter of the absorbing spot is 0. 55 ± 0. 15, slightly smaller than, but′′ ′′consistent with, the 0. 70 ± 0. 05 diameter measured in the higher quality WFPC2 Ca II absorption image previously reported by us. The measured ratio of flux inside to outside SNR 1885 in the Fe IIimage is 0.24 ± 0.17, consistent with the …

Liming Of Vineyard Soils, Thomas J. Rice
Liming Of Vineyard Soils, Thomas J. Rice
Earth and Soil Sciences
Liming vineyard soils to increase soil pH and raise calcium levels has been practiced for centuries in the humid areas of the world where soils tend to be more acid. Today, liming is increasingly practiced in the semiarid central coast regions of California, where liming of vineyards was unheard of even a decade ago.
Past agricultural practices, such as the addition of sulfur, acid-forming nitrogen fertilizers, and organic soil amendments, have caused soil acidification. Previously, most of these lands were either open space, range lands, or planted to grain crops.
To avoid unnecessary expense and protect the soil from environmental …
Neural Networks And Structured Knowledge: Knowledge Representation And Reasoning, Franz J. Kurfess
Neural Networks And Structured Knowledge: Knowledge Representation And Reasoning, Franz J. Kurfess
Computer Science and Software Engineering
This collection of articles is the first of two parts of a special issue on "Neural Networks and Structured Knowledge." The contributions to the first part shed some light on the issues of knowledge representation and reasoning with neural networks. Their scope ranges from formal models for mapping discrete structures like graphs or logical formulae onto different types of neural networks, to the construction of practical systems for various types of reasoning. In the second part to follow, the emphasis will be on the extraction of knowledge from neural networks, and on applications of neural networks and structured knowledge to …
Interannual Variations In Snowmelt Onset And Links To 500 Hpa Atmospheric Anomalies Over The Arctic, Sheldon D. Drobot, Mark R. Anderson
Interannual Variations In Snowmelt Onset And Links To 500 Hpa Atmospheric Anomalies Over The Arctic, Sheldon D. Drobot, Mark R. Anderson
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Interannual variations in the melt onset of snow provide a mechanism to observe climatic fluctuations. Timing of initial ablation is associated with certain poorly defined overlying atmospheric conditions. This paper investigates the spatial and temporal patterns in melt onset dates and associated 500 hPa height anomalies over the Arctic region from 1982 to 1992. Melt onset dates are derived from Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) and Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) data, while 500 hPa height anomalies are computed from the National Centers for Environmental Protection (NCEP) reanalysis models. Results indicate significant interannual variations in the spatial pattern and timing …

The Translocation Of Barramundi. A Discussion Paper., Makaira Pty Ltd
Fisheries management papers
There is recognisable economic benefit to the translocation of barramundi, but there is also a need to ensure the translocation will not adversely impact upon the genetic diversity, introduce disease or impact on the natural environment and biodiversity. This discussion paper has been prepared to provide information to assist in the assessment of the possible impact of translocation of barramundi into and within Western Australia, for the purposed of recreational stock enhancement, aquaculture development and domestic stocking. In contemplating the translocation any aquatic species, signigicant economic and social benefits must be balanced with biological and environmental risks; that is, the …

Published data and analyses from temperate and tropical aquatic systems are used to summarize knowledge about the potential impact of land-use alteration on the nitrogen biogeochemistry of tropical aquatic ecosystems, identify important patterns and recommend key needs for research. The tropical N-cycle is traced from pre-disturbance conditions through the phases of disturbance, highlighting major differences between tropical and temperate systems that might influence development strategies in the tropics. Analyses suggest that tropical freshwaters are more frequently N-limited than temperate zones, while tropical marine systems may show more frequent P limitation. These analyses indicate that disturbances to pristine tropical lands will …

Nickelocene Adsorption On Single-Crystal Surfaces, D. L. Pugmire, C. M. Woodbridge, S. Root, Marjorie Langell
Nickelocene Adsorption On Single-Crystal Surfaces, D. L. Pugmire, C. M. Woodbridge, S. Root, Marjorie Langell
Marjorie A. Langell Publications
Nickelocene adsorption onto Ag(100), Ni(100), and NiO(100)/Ni(100) surfaces was studied with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy at 135 K for monolayer and multilayer coverages of NiCp2. On the relatively inert Ag(100) surface, nickelocene physisorbs molecularly, with its molecular axis perpendicular to the surface plane. Exposure to the reactive Ni(100) surface results in the decomposition of nickelocene into acetylene and acetylene-like fragments and, when this surface is warmed to 273 K, carbide contamination is observed. There is evidence for double-bond carbon on nickelocene-exposed NiO(100), and vinyl and propenyl fragments are the most likely decomposition products …

Mathematics Faculty Publications
If K is a convex body in En, its cross-section body CK has a radial function in any direction u is ∈ Sn-1 equal to the maximal volume of hyperplane sections of K orthogonal to u. A generalization called the p-cross-section body CpK of K, where p > -1, is introduced. The radial function of CpK in any direction u ∈ Sn-1 is the pth mean of the volumes of hyperplane sections of K orthogonal to u through points in K. It is shown that C …
Community-Based Organizations And Neighborhood Environmental Problem-Solving: A Framework For Adoption Of Information Technologies, Wendy A. Kellogg
Community-Based Organizations And Neighborhood Environmental Problem-Solving: A Framework For Adoption Of Information Technologies, Wendy A. Kellogg
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
Community-based organizations (CBOs) today seek improved capacity to address environmental problems in urban neighbourhoods. Many seek access to information technologies such as the Internet and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to expand information about their neighbourhood's environmental quality to support their planning and service efforts. Experience with the Internet has been bolstered somewhat by programmes to create community networks. This experience and experience with GIS in planning at the municipal and state levels reveals a set of technical, organizational and personal prerequisites that bolster successful and effective adoption of information technologies. This paper reviews these prerequisites as they pertain to CBOs …

This article addresses the current political, socioeconomic, and educational state of mathematics education in California. The “back-to-basics” movement in mathematics mirrors the “back-to-phonics” movement in language arts. At a time when ethnic minorities have become the majority, the dominant culture has chosen to revert back to practices that are inequitable and empower the elite. Critical educators must carry on the dialogue necessary to empower the disenfranchised mathematically and undermine the social injustice and economic inequality that will result if this movement is embraced.
