The Department of Defense (DoD) needs multilevel secure (MLS) workflow management systems to enable globally distributed users and applications to cooperate across classification levels to achieve mission critical goals. An MLS workflow management system that allows a user to program multilevel mission logic, to securely coordinate widely distributed tasks, and to monitor the progress of the workflow across classification levels is required. In this paper, we present a roadmap for implementing MLS workflows and focus on a workflow builder that is a graphical design tool for specifying such workflows.

Using interferometry, we investigate the dynamics of interaction of a relativistically intense 4-TW, 400-fs laser pulse with a He gas jet. We observe a stable plasma channel 1 mm long and less than 30 μm in diameter, with a radial gradient of electron density ∼5×1022 cm-4 and with an on-axis electron density approximately ten times less than its maximum value of 8×1019 cm-3. A high radial velocity of the surrounding gas ionization of ∼3.8×108 cm/s has been observed after the channel formation, and it is attributed to the fast ions expelled from the laser …

Survival Versus Years Of Healthy Life; Which Is More Powerful As A Study Outcome?, Paula Diehr Jun 1999

Survival Versus Years Of Healthy Life; Which Is More Powerful As A Study Outcome?, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

Studies of interventions that are intended to improve patients' health are often evaluated with survival as the primary outcome, even when a measure adjusted for quality of survival, such as years of healthy life (YHL), would seem more appropriate. The purpose of this article is to determine whether studies based on survival are more or less powerful than studies based on YHL in clinical trials where either measure might be appropriate. We used data from the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) to estimate the sample size that would be needed in studies of 156 different health conditions, for the two outcome …

New Developments In A Hazard Identification Algorithm For Hormone Receptor Ligands, Steven P. Bradbury, Ovanes Mekenyan, Nina Nikolova, Stoyan Karabunarliev, Gerald T. Ankley, Bjorn Hansen

Steven P. Bradbury

Recently we described the Common REactivity PAttern (COREPA) technique to screen data sets of diverse structures for their ability to serve as ligands for steroid hormone receptors [1]. The approach identi®es and quanti®es similar global and local stereoelectronic characteristics associated with active ligands through a comparison of energeticallyreasonable conformer distributions for selected descriptors. For each stereoelectronic descriptor selected, discrete conformer distributions from a training set of ligands are evaluated and parameter ranges common for conformers from all the chemicals in the training set are identi®ed. The use of discrete partitions of parameter ranges to de®ne common reactivity patterns can, however, …

Spume Drops Produced By The Wind Tearing Of Wave Crests, Richard P. Barber Jr., Magdalena Anguelova, Jin Wu Jun 1999

Spume Drops Produced By The Wind Tearing Of Wave Crests, Richard P. Barber Jr., Magdalena Anguelova, Jin Wu

Physics

The wind tearing of breaking wave crests produces spume drops. The authors report preliminary laboratory data from direct and unambiguous observation of this process under various wind conditions using a video imaging technique. Results include the size distribution and production rates of these drops. The curves for production rates at different wind speeds merge effectively when normalized by the number of breaking events. This confirms that wave breaking occurrence, not the wind speed, is a dominant factor in spume production.

Influence Of Rare Regions On Magnetic Quantum Phase Transitions, Rajesh S. Narayanan, Thomas Vojta, Dietrich Belitz, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick Jun 1999

Influence Of Rare Regions On Magnetic Quantum Phase Transitions, Rajesh S. Narayanan, Thomas Vojta, Dietrich Belitz, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of quenched disorder on the critical properties of itinerant quantum magnets are considered. Particular attention is paid to locally ordered rare regions that are formed in the presence of quenched disorder even when the bulk system is still in the nonmagnetic phase. It is shown that these local moments or instantons destroy the previously found critical fixed point in the case of antiferromagnets. In the case of itinerant ferromagnets, the critical behavior is unaffected by the rare regions due to an effective long-range interaction between the order parameter fluctuations.

First Order Transitions And Multicritical Points In Weak Itinerant Ferromagnets, Dietrich Belitz, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick, Thomas Vojta Jun 1999

First Order Transitions And Multicritical Points In Weak Itinerant Ferromagnets, Dietrich Belitz, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is shown that the phase transition in low-Tc clean itinerant ferromagnets is generically of first order, due to correlation effects that lead to a nonanalytic term in the free energy. A tricritical point separates the line of first order transitions from Heisenberg critical behavior at higher temperatures. Sufficiently strong quenched disorder suppresses the first order transition via the appearance of a critical end point. A semiquantitative discussion is given in terms of recent experiments on MnSi, and predictions for other experiments are made.

Embedded Graph Invariants In Chern-Simons Theory, Seth Major Jun 1999

Embedded Graph Invariants In Chern-Simons Theory, Seth Major

Articles

Chern-Simons gauge theory, since its inception as a topological quantum field theory, has proved to be a rich source of understanding for knot invariants. In this work the theory is used to explore the definition of the expectation value of a network of Wilson lines — an embedded graph invariant. Using a generalization of the variational method, lowest-order results for invariants for graphs of arbitrary valence and general vertex tangent space structure are derived. Gauge invariant operators are introduced. Higher order results are found. The method used here provides a Vassiliev-type definition of graph invariants which depend on both the …

The Binding Of Fluorophores To Beta-Cyclodextrin Derivatives, Kellie J. Forrestall Jun 1999

The Binding Of Fluorophores To Beta-Cyclodextrin Derivatives, Kellie J. Forrestall

Honors Theses

β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) is a seven-unit cyclic sugar molecule with a toroidal shape, a hydrophilic exterior and a hydrophobic cavity. It has been suggested that pyrene (P) forms a 2:1 (P(β-CD)2) complex with β-CD, where pyrene lies in-between the two wider rims of the β-CD. We examined this hypothesis by comparing the spectral properties of pyrene in the presence of substituted β-CDs. These properties include the shape and lifetime of pyrene fluorescence and the effect on pyrene fluorescence of added iodide quencher and alcohol. The derivatives studied included those with substituents only on the narrow rim, and those with substitution on …

The Characterization Of Methylene-Blue-Doped Sol Gels And The Development Of A Fluorenscence-Based Fiber-Optic Sensor For Sulfite, Tara K. Morcone Jun 1999

The Characterization Of Methylene-Blue-Doped Sol Gels And The Development Of A Fluorenscence-Based Fiber-Optic Sensor For Sulfite, Tara K. Morcone

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research was to develop a fiber-optic sensor for sulfite via immobilizing Methylene Blue (MB) within a sol-gel matrix. MB is a redox-indicating dye. In the oxidized form, the dye is a blue color, but reduction causes a change to the colorless, leuco form. This property is advantageous for the detection of reducing agents, such as sulfite. In solution, leuco-MB reverts to its blue form in the presence of an oxidizing agent. The method of MB immobilization is through the use of sol gels. The environment of a sol gel is chemically inert and small analytes can …

The Dynamic Interactions Of Actin Stress Fibers And Microtubutes, Daniel Jason Kelmanovich Jun 1999

The Dynamic Interactions Of Actin Stress Fibers And Microtubutes, Daniel Jason Kelmanovich

Honors Theses

The regulation of actin stress fibers (SF) are linked to the stability of microtubule (M1) structures. The exact method of interaction is not understood. To study the interaction, live cells containing fluorescent α-actinin were observed and treated with MT perturbing drugs as well as ATP-depletion. These treatments affect the stability of the microtubules and stress fibers respectively. A plasmid coding for fluorescent tubulin was also inserted into these cells to aid in observing both the MTs and SFs simultaneously. The observation relies on fluorescent microscopy and digital imaging. By observing the changes in the MTs and SFs in live cells, …

Molybdenum Accumulation In Cariaco Basin Sediment Over The Past 24 K.Y.: A Record Of Water-Column Anoxia And Climate, Walter E. Dean, David Z. Piper, Larry C. Peterson Jun 1999

Molybdenum Accumulation In Cariaco Basin Sediment Over The Past 24 K.Y.: A Record Of Water-Column Anoxia And Climate, Walter E. Dean, David Z. Piper, Larry C. Peterson

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Molybdenum (Mo) concentrations in a sediment core from the Cariaco basin on the Venezuelan continental shelf can be partitioned between a marine fraction and a terrigenous fraction. The accumulation rate of the marine fraction of Mo increased abruptly 15 000 calendar years ago (15 ka), from <0.5 mg • cm-2 • yr-1 to >4 μg • cm-2 • yr-1, and then decreased abruptly at 9 ka. The accumulation rate remained high throughout this 6 k.y. period, but exhibited maxima at 15–14 and 12.5 ka, corresponding in time to meltwater pulse IA into the Gulf of Mexico and the onset …

The Polymerization Of Aniline On Transition-Metal Cation Exchanged Hectorite Films, Charity Mcmanaman Jun 1999

The Polymerization Of Aniline On Transition-Metal Cation Exchanged Hectorite Films, Charity Mcmanaman

Honors Theses

Inorganic-organic materials often exhibit enhanced flexibility and thermal stability over their individual inorganic and organic precursors. We are studying the polymerization of organic aniline monomers on inorganic hectorite clay thin film supports. Previous research has shown that aniline polymerizes on the surface and intergallery regions of Cu(II)-exchanged hectorite films. We have synthesized a library of first row transition-metal exchanged hectorite thin film hosts and are probing the effects of the different transition metal cations on aniline polymerization. We have used infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and digital photography to characterize the extent of aniline polymerization on the films. Utilizing the transition …

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

Gray wolf populations (Canis lupus) were extirpated from the western U.S. by the 1930s. Subsequently, wolves from Canada occasionally dispersed south into Montana and Idaho but failed to survive long enough to reproduce. Public attitudes toward predators changed and wolves received legal protection with the passage of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1973. Wolves began to successfully recolonize northwestern Montana in the early 1980s. By 1995, 6 packs lived entirely in northwestern Montana. In 1995 and 1996, 66 wolves from southwestern Canada were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park (YNP) (31 wolves) and central Idaho (35 wolves). The …

4-Methoxybenzaldehyde Pentafluorophenyl-Methylidenehydrazone, Michael A. Lewis, Charles Leslie Barnes, Bruce A. Hathaway, Rainer Glaser

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The crystal structure of the mixed azine C15H9F5N2O is described. The molecule has a high degree of planarity. The two phenyl rings deviate from perfect planarity by less than 2° and the dihedral angles between the ipso-C atoms and the azine bridge also show a minute deviation from planarity of less than 2°. The only dihedral angle that indicates any significant twisting is the dihedral angle about the azine bridge [C1-N1-N2-C8 174.8 (6)°], and even this one is relatively small. Face-to-face arene-arene contacts are the dominant intermolecular interactions. There are double …
