The Abbotsford-Sumas aquifer is a primarily unconfined aquifer, located in Whatcom County, WA, with a history of nitrate contamination. Whatcom County is a large producer of raspberries and contains numerous dairy farms. Both of these agricultural practices involve large quantities of nitrates being produced or used for fertilization. A two-year ground water monitoring program was conducted in 1997 and 1998 by Western Washington University in order to determine the spatial and temporal extent of the nitrate contamination. Possible trends in nitrate concentrations may be associated with ground water movement, chemical and biological nitrate reduction processes, seasonality and land use. Exploratory …

From April 1997 to January 1999, a water quality study in a four square mile area in northern Whatcom County was conducted by the Geology Department and the Institute for Watershed Studies at Western Washington University. As part of this study, this thesis focused on characterizing the hydrostratigraphy, groundwater flow directions and flow velocities and developing a groundwater model using MODFLOW and Boss GMS version 2.0 (GMS) to simulate groundwater flow and nitrate transport within this area. A total of 756 female adolescents, aged 13 to 18 years, from five public high schools in Antelope Valley Union High School District located in North Los Angeles County participated in this study between February 1999 and March 1999. The ethnic composition was 53.3% White/Anglo Americans, 19.3% Hispanics or Latinos and 10.2% Black/African Americans. The constructs of the Theory of Planned Behavior (attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control and their underlying beliefs) were assessed to determine the predictors of low-fat milk and regular soda consumption. A cross-sectional design with group-administered questionnaires was utilized.

Revised Glacial Margins And Wisconsin Meltwater Paleoflood Hydrology In Slippery Rock Creek Basin, Central Western Pennsylvania, Gary John D'Urso

Glacial margins mapped in Slippery Rock Creek basin during the 1950s are problematic. The number of sedimentological, mineralogical, petrological, and textural analyses used to distinguish glacial drifts in the southern portion of the basin were inadequate to resolve the margins. Furthermore, misidentification of man-made deposits as glacial drift led to erroneous interpretations regarding the extent and character of pre-Wisconsin glacial deposits, and appears to have influenced subsequent soil mapping. Canadian Shield erratic weathering was the primary tool used in this study to re-investigate the glacial margins. Erratics display one of three distinctive weathering rinds, so glacial deposits can be differentiated …
