Western Rangeland Noxious Weeds: Collecting, Sharing And Using Information, U.S. Department Of Interior, U.S. Department Of Agriculture, Riley Memorial Foundation

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Western rangeland weeds such as yellow starthistle, leafy spurge, Canada thistle and Russian knapweed are causing tremendous losses to agricultural industries, including both crop and livestock production, and to environmental resources on private lands. Concurrently, many public lands managed by federal agencies are being steadily invaded. As a result, these lands held in the public trust are experiencing reductions in commodity yields, recreational opportunities, biodiversity and ecosystem function.

Canaleparolina Darwiniensis, Gen. Nov., Sp. Nov., And Other Pillotinaceae Spirochetes From Insects, Andrew Wier, Jon Ashen, Lynn Margulis Sep 2000

Canaleparolina Darwiniensis, Gen. Nov., Sp. Nov., And Other Pillotinaceae Spirochetes From Insects, Andrew Wier, Jon Ashen, Lynn Margulis

Lynn Margulis (1938 - 2011)

We describe two new pillotinaceous spirochetes (Canaleparolina darwiniensis, Diplocalyx cryptotermitidis) and identify for the first time Hollandina pterotermitidisfrom both the subterranean termite Cryptotermes cavifrons and the wood-eating cockroach Cryptocercus punctulatus based on morphometric analysis of transmission electron micrographic thin sections. C. darwiniensis, gen. nov., sp. nov., limited to near Darwin, Australia, invariably is present on the surface of the treponeme-studded trichomonad Mixotricha paradoxa, a consistent inhabitant of the hindgut of healthy termite Mastotermes darwiniensis. The spirochete both attached to the surface of protists and free-swimming in the paunch (hindgut) lumen of the insect has 16 periplasmic flagella (16:32:16) and imbricated …

Rejex-It® Bird Repellents - Mode Of Action, Peter F. Vogt Sep 2000

Rejex-It® Bird Repellents - Mode Of Action, Peter F. Vogt

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Rejex-it® bird repellents are used to repel birds and reduce bird predation. Rejex-it® represents a long-needed, logical alternative to inhumane bird control methods such as poisoning and shooting. Its effectiveness as a nuisance bird repellant is based on a common, naturally-occurring, com lly recognized as safe" food and ponent of food that has been designated by the FDA as a "generafragrance additive. Methyl Anthranilate (MA), the active ingredient in Rejex-it® Bird Repellents, acts as a sensory repellent by irri tating the bird's taste buds, skin, and trigeminal chemoreceptors in the beaks, gizzards, eyes, and mucous membranes. Irritation occurs as a …

Sm–Co–Cu–Ti High-Temperature Permanent Magnets, Jian Zhou, Ralph Skomski, C. Chen, George C. Hadjipanayis, David J. Sellmyer Sep 2000

Sm–Co–Cu–Ti High-Temperature Permanent Magnets, Jian Zhou, Ralph Skomski, C. Chen, George C. Hadjipanayis, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

A class of promising permanent-magnet materials with an appreciable high-temperature coercivity of 8.6 kOe at 500 °C is reported. The Sm–Co–Cu–Ti magnets are prepared by arc melting and require a suitable heat treatment. Magnetization measurements as a function of temperature and x-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the samples are two-phase mixtures of 2:17 and 1:5 structures. Depending on heat treatment and composition, some of the magnets exhibit a positive temperature coefficient of coercivity. The promising high-temperature behavior of the coercivity is ascribed to the temperature dependence of the domain-wall energy, which affects the curvature of the walls and the pinning …

Query Scrambling In Distributed Multidatabase Systems, J. R. Getta Sep 2000

Query Scrambling In Distributed Multidatabase Systems, J. R. Getta

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This work addresses the problem of efficient query processing in multidatabase systems distributed over wide-area networks. The solution unifies the query scrambling and reduction approaches to dynamic optimization of query processing plans at the data integration stage. The paper presents a new data integration algorithm based on query scrambling and the extended reduction technique. The algorithm both reschedules data integration operations and reductions of arguments and permits the concurrent computations of operations and reductions.

Search For Second And Third Generation Leptoquarks Including Production Via Technicolor Interactions In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration Sep 2000

Search For Second And Third Generation Leptoquarks Including Production Via Technicolor Interactions In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report the results of a search for second and third generation leptoquarks using 88 pb-1 of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Color triplet technipions, which play the role of scalar leptoquarks, are investigated due to their potential production in decays of strongly coupled color octet technirhos. Events with a signature of two heavy flavor jets and missing energy may indicate the decay of a second (third) generation leptoquark to a charm (bottom) quark and a neutrino. As the data are found to be consistent with standard model expectations, mass limits are determined.

Search For New Particles Decaying To Tt̅ In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We use 106 pb-1 of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab to search for narrow-width, vector particles decaying to a top and an antitop quark. Model independent upper limits on the cross section for narrow, vector resonances decaying to tt̅ are presented. At the 95% confidence level, we exclude the existence of a leptophobic Z′ boson in a model of top-color-assisted technicolor with mass MZ′ < 480 GeV/c2 for natural width Γ = 0.012MZ0 , and MZ′ < 780 GeV/c2 for Γ = MZ′ .

Pushpush And Push-1 Are Np-Hard In 2d, Erik D. Demaine, Martin L. Demaine, Joseph O'Rourke Sep 2000

Pushpush And Push-1 Are Np-Hard In 2d, Erik D. Demaine, Martin L. Demaine, Joseph O'Rourke

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We prove that two pushing-blocks puzzles are intractable in 2D. One of our constructions improves an earlier result that established intractability in 3D [OS99] for a puzzle inspired by the game PushPush. The second construction answers a question we raised in [DDO00] for a variant we call Push-1. Both puzzles consist of unit square blocks on an integer lattice; all blocks are movable. An agent may push blocks (but never pull them) in attempting to move between given start and goal positions. In the PushPush version, the agent can only push one block at a time, and moreover when a …

Using A Mensuration Approach With Fia Vegetation Plot Data To Assess The Accuracy Of Tree Size And Crown Closure Classes In A Vegetation Map Of Northeastern California, Samantha J. Gill, Jeff Milliken, Debby Beardsley, Ralph Warbington Sep 2000

Using A Mensuration Approach With Fia Vegetation Plot Data To Assess The Accuracy Of Tree Size And Crown Closure Classes In A Vegetation Map Of Northeastern California, Samantha J. Gill, Jeff Milliken, Debby Beardsley, Ralph Warbington

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

The accuracy of the Lassen-Modoc vegetation map was assessed using data from a grid of permanent Forest In-ventory and Analysis (FIA) plots in conjunction with a fuzzy logic approach. This paper presents the results for the Modoc National Forest. The main foci of this paper are the methods and results for assessing the accuracy of tree size and crown closure classes using a mensurational approach based on calculations made from the plot data. This approach proved very useful in conjunction with fuzzy accuracy methods. Higher error rates reported for crown closure classes may be due to a variety of factors …

Singularly Perturbed Control Systems Using Non-Commutative Computer Algebra, J. W. Helton, F. Dell Kronewitter, W. M. Mceneaney, Mark Stankus Sep 2000

Singularly Perturbed Control Systems Using Non-Commutative Computer Algebra, J. W. Helton, F. Dell Kronewitter, W. M. Mceneaney, Mark Stankus

Mathematics

Most algebraic calculations which one sees in linear systems theory, for example in IEEE TAC, involve block matrices and so are highly non-commutative. Thus conventional commutative computer algebra packages, as in Mathematica and Maple, do not address them. Here we investigate the usefulness of non-commutative computer algebra in a particular area of control theory − singularly perturbed dynamic systems − where working with the non-commutative polynomials involved is especially tedious. Our conclusion is that they have considerable potential for helping practitioners with such computations. Commutative Gröbner basis algorithms are powerful and make up the engines in symbolic algebra packages' …

Interactive 3-D Visualization: A Tool For Seafloor Navigation, Exploration, And Engineering, Larry A. Mayer, Mark Paton, Lindsay Gee, James V. Gardner, Colin Ware

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Recent years have seen remarkable advances in sonar technology, positioning capabilities, and computer processing power that have revolutionized the way we image the seafloor. The massive amounts of data produced by these systems present many challenges but also offer tremendous opportunities in terms of visualization and analysis. We have developed a suite of interactive 3-D visualization and exploration tools specifically designed to facilitate the interpretation and analysis of very large (10's to 100's of megabytes), complex, multi-component spatial data sets. If properly georeferenced and treated, these complex data sets can be presented in a natural and intuitive manner that allows …

Structural Relatedness Of Distinct Determinants Recognized By Monoclonal Antibody Tp25.99 On Ss2-Microglobulin-Associated And Ss2-Microglobulin-Free Hla Class I Heavy Chains, Smruti A. Desai, Xinhui Wang, Elvyra J. Noronha, Qinwei Zhou, Vera Rebmann, Hans Grosse-Wilde, Franklin J. Moy, Robert Powers, Soldano Ferrone

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

The association of HLA class I heavy chains with ß2-microglobulin (ß2m) changes their antigenic profile. As a result, Abs react with either ß2m-free or ß2m-associated HLA class I heavy chains. An exception to this rule is the mAb TP25.99, which reacts with both ß2m-associated and ß2m-free HLA class I heavy chains. The reactivity with ß2m-associated HLA class I heavy chains is mediated by a conformational determinant expressed on all HLA-A, -B, and -C Ags. This determinant has been mapped to amino acid residues 194–198 in the …

The Effect Of Stochastic Cloud Structure On The Icing Process, A. R. Jameson, Alexander Kostinski Sep 2000

The Effect Of Stochastic Cloud Structure On The Icing Process, A. R. Jameson, Alexander Kostinski

Department of Physics Publications

Current understanding of the icing process through collisions between a surface and supercooled cloud droplets is based upon two factors. First, for a given temperature, when the cloud liquid water content, W, exceeds a critical value, wc (the Schumann–Ludlam limit), the ice that collects, whether on the surface of a hailstone or on the wing of an aircraft, changes from lower densities to values close to that of water. Second, it is assumed that cloud droplets are dispersed in space as uniformly as randomness allows (“Poissonian” clouds).

It is now becoming well established, however, that clouds are not Poissonian. …

Response Of A First-Order Stream In Maine To Short-Term In-Stream Acidification, Stephen A. Norton, Rota Wagai, Tomas Navratil, James M. Kaste, Frederick A. Rissberger Sep 2000

Response Of A First-Order Stream In Maine To Short-Term In-Stream Acidification, Stephen A. Norton, Rota Wagai, Tomas Navratil, James M. Kaste, Frederick A. Rissberger

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

An experimental short-term acidification with HCl at a first-order stream in central Maine, USA was used to study processes controlling the changes in stream chemistry and to assess the ability of stream substrate to buffer pH. The streambed exerted a strong buffering capacity against pH change by ion exchange during the 6-hour acidification. Streambed substrates had substantial cation and anion exchange capacity in the pH range of 4.1 to 6.5. The ion exchange for cations and SO42- were rapid and reversible. The speed of release of cations from stream substrates was Na1+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Aln+ > Be2+, perhaps relating to charge …

Occurrence And Distribution Of Diverse Populations Of Magnetic Protists In A Chemically Stratified Coastal Salt Pond, Dennis A. Bazylinski, David R. Schlezinger, Brian H. Howes, Richard B. Frankel, Slava S. Epstein Sep 2000

Occurrence And Distribution Of Diverse Populations Of Magnetic Protists In A Chemically Stratified Coastal Salt Pond, Dennis A. Bazylinski, David R. Schlezinger, Brian H. Howes, Richard B. Frankel, Slava S. Epstein

Physics

Chemical stratification occurs in the water columns and sediments of many aquatic habitats resulting in vertical chemical and redox gradients. Various types of microorganisms are often associated with specific depths and chemical parameters in these situations. For example, magnetite-producing magnetotactic bacteria are known to form horizontal “plates” of cells at the oxic/anoxic transition zone (OATZ) of such environments. Here, we report the presence of populations of diverse magnetic protists in a seasonally chemically stratified, coastal salt pond. The protistan types included several biflagellates, a dinoflagellate, and a ciliate that were each associated with specific depths and thus, specific chemical, microbiological …

Some Applications Of The Lambert W Function To Physics, Sree R. Valluri, David J. Jeffrey, Robert M. Corless Sep 2000

Some Applications Of The Lambert W Function To Physics, Sree R. Valluri, David J. Jeffrey, Robert M. Corless

Physics and Astronomy Publications

Two standard physics problems are solved in terms of the Lambert W function, in order to show the applicability of this recently defined function to physics. Other applications of the function are cited, but not described. The problems solved concern Wien’s displacement law and the fringing fields of a capacitor, the latter problem being representative of some problems solved using conformal transformations. The physical content of the solutions remains unchanged, but they gain a new elegance and convenience.

Nanoindentation And Strain Characteristics Of Nanostructured Boride/Nitride Films, Niklas Hellgren, R A. Andrievskii, G V. Kalinnikov, P Sandstrom, D V. Shtanskii Sep 2000

Nanoindentation And Strain Characteristics Of Nanostructured Boride/Nitride Films, Niklas Hellgren, R A. Andrievskii, G V. Kalinnikov, P Sandstrom, D V. Shtanskii

Educator Scholarship & Departmental Newsletters

The hardness, elastic modulus, and elastic recovery of nanostructured boride/nitride films 1–2 µm thick have been investigated by the nanoindentation technique under the maximum loads over a wide range (from 5 to 100 mN). It is demonstrated that only the hardness parameters remain constant at small loads (5–30 mN). The data obtained are discussed and compared with the parameters determined by other methods.

The Nebraska Earth Science Education Network (NESEN) is an organization within the University of Nebraska-Lincoln whose objectives are to: 1) promote and enhance K-12 earth science education in Nebraska, 2) improve teacher knowledge and understanding so that students become better informed about the complexities of environmental and natural resources issues and 3) enhance the transfer of earth science information to the K-12 teaching community (Gosselin, Mohlman, Mesarch & Meyer, 1996; Gosselin et al., 1999). To achieve this last objective NESEN developed the Students and Teachers Exchanging Data, Information and Ideas (STEDII) program with the help of support from the National …

The Rr Lyrae Star V442 Herculis: An Extreme Case Of Light-Curve Modulation, Edward G. Schmidt, Kevin M. Lee Sep 2000

The Rr Lyrae Star V442 Herculis: An Extreme Case Of Light-Curve Modulation, Edward G. Schmidt, Kevin M. Lee

Edward Schmidt Publications

We have obtained photometric observations of the peculiar RR Lyrae star V442 Her during six observing seasons spanning an elapsed time of nearly 9 years. The period has undergone two large, abrupt changes in the past 5 years. Although light-curve modulation is fairly common among RR Lyrae stars, the modulation of the light curve of V442 Her is highly unusual for its large amplitude, long period, extreme alterations in light-curve shape, and large period changes.

Stochastic Hybrid Control, A. Bensoussan, J. L. Menaldi Sep 2000

Stochastic Hybrid Control, A. Bensoussan, J. L. Menaldi

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

The objective of this paper is to study the stochastic version of a previous paper of the authors, in which hybrid control for deterministic systems was considered. The modelling is quite similar to the deterministic case. We have a system whose state is composed of a continuous part and a discrete part. They are affected by a continuous type control and an impulse control. The dynamics is moreover perturbed by noise, also a continuous and a discrete noise process. The Markovian character of the state process is preserved. We develop the model and show how the dynamic programming approach leads …
