Green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh.) communities are valuable as sources of biological diversity and shelter for livestock in the Northern Great Plains. Excessive use of stands by livestock tends to convert these woodland communities to less valuable shrublands. We monitored 12 green ash stands in Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP) from 1985 through 1996 to determine changes in species composition, plant density, and canopy coverage in green ash communities that were protected from livestock but exposed to foraging by native ungulates. We introduce two new models which are obtained through the modification of the well known methods MLP and cascade correlation. These two methods differ fundamentally as they employ learning techniques and produce network architectures that are not directly comparable. We extended the MLP architecture, and reduced the constructive method to obtain very comparable network architectures. The greatest benefit of these new models is that we can obtain an MLP-structured network through a constructive method based on the cascade correlation algorithm, and that we can train a cascade correlation structured network using the standard MLP learning technique. We have observed a distinct surface phase transition for an important class of giant magnetoresistance materials [La1-x Srx MnO3 (x = 0.35)]. The surface phase transition occurs at 240 K compared to 370 K for the bulk and is fundamentally different. In the bulk, a ferromagnetic metal to paramagnetic bad-metal transition occurs, while the lower-temperature surface transition is from an insulator to a semimetal. The surface of this manganese perovskite is electronically and compositionally quite different from the bulk with important implications for the behavior of artificially grown layered transition-metal oxides and for the use of surface …

Two static-electric-field-induced effects on harmonic generation are demonstrated analytically and numerically: elliptic dichroism (in which the harmonic yield is different for right and left elliptically polarized laser fields) and elliptical polarization of harmonics produced by linearly polarized driving laser fields. Both effects stem from interference of real and imaginary parts of the nonlinear atomic susceptibilities. Possibilities for experimentally measuring these effects are discussed.

The Lewis and Clark Natural Resources District (LCNRD) has reported elevated nitrate- nitrogen (NO3-N) concentrations in ground water near Creighton, NE. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set a maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 mg/L for NO3-N in public water supplies. NO3-N in the city of Creighton municipal drinking water wells and several rural domestic and irrigation wells have exceeded the MCL. The city of Creighton has constructed a reverse-osmosis water treatment system at a cost of $1.1 million to reduce the NO3-N concentration below the MCL in its water supply. A novel thermoelectric material in the form of a unit cell including a first reagent intercalated as a semiconducting layer into a metallic layered host and a method for producing the thermoelectric material are disclosed. The unit cell is characterized by a Seebeck coefficient S of 80-140 μV/K° and an electrical conductivity σ of 103 -104 (Ωcm)-1, as well as a figure of merit Z of about 2×10-3 K-1 at 100° K.

Access control (AC) is a necessary defense against a large variety of security attacks on the resources of distributed enterprise applications. However, to be effective, AC in some application domains has to be fine-grain, support the use of application-specific factors in authorization decisions, as well as consistently and reliably enforce organization-wide authorization policies across enterprise applications. Because the existing middleware technologies do not provide a complete solution, application developers resort to embedding AC functionality in application systems. The Earth Observing System (EOS) instrument teams must validate the operational products they produce from the Terra spacecraft data. As a pilot for future validation activities, four EOS teams (MODIS, MISR, ASTER, and Landsat-7) and community experts conducted an 11-day field campaign in May 1997 near Las Cruces, NM. The goals of the Prototype Validation Exercise (PROVE) included (1) gaining experience in the collection and use of field data for EOS product validation; (2) developing coordination, measurement, and data-archiving protocols; and (3) compiling a synoptic land and atmospheric data set for testing algorithms. The interaction of the nucleocapsid protein NCp7, from the pNL4-3 isolate of HIV-1, with Ψ-RNA-SL3, with the sequence 5’-GGACUAGCGGAGGCUAGUCC, was studied using non-denaturing gel electrophoresis. Two kinds of experiments were performed, using buffered solutions of radiolabeled RNA and unlabeled protein. In the ‘dilution’ experiments, the total RNA concentration, RT, was varied for a series of solutions, but kept equal to the total protein concentration, PT. In the ‘titration’ experiments, solutions having RT constant but with varying PT were analyzed. Maillard or browning reactions lead to formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) on protein and contribute to the increase in chemical modification of proteins during aging and in diabetes. AGE inhibitors such as aminoguanidine and pyridoxamine (PM) have proven effective in animal model and clinical studies as inhibitors of AGE formation and development of diabetic complications. We report here that PM also inhibits the chemical modification of proteins during lipid peroxidation (lipoxidation) reactions in vitro, and we show that it traps reactive intermediates formed during lipid peroxidation. The exchange bias effect is measured for the first time in FeF2–CoPt heterosystems with perpendicular anisotropy. The exchange previous field exhibits a strong dependence on the axial previous freezing field. This behavior is explained in terms of the microscopic spin structure at the interface, which is established on cooling to below TN. We calculate the dependence of the spin structure on the previous freezing field within the framework of an Ising model. It takes into account the Zeeman energy as well as an antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between the adjacent layers at the interface.

We investigate how to make the surface of a convex polyhedron (a polytope) by folding up a polygon and gluing its perimeter shut, and the reverse process of cutting open a polytope and unfolding it to a polygon. We explore basic enumeration questions in both directions: Given a polygon, how many foldings are there? Given a polytope, how many unfoldings are there to simple polygons? Throughout we give special attention to convex polygons, and to regular polygons. We show that every convex polygon folds to an infinite number of distinct polytopes, but that their number of combinatorially distinct gluings is …

We present a measurement of the cluster X-ray luminosity-temperature (L-T) relation out to high redshift (z∼0.8). Combined ROSAT PSPC spectra of 91 galaxy clusters detected in the Wide Angle ROSAT Pointed Survey (WARPS) are simultaneously fitted in redshift and luminosity bins. The resulting temperature and luminosity measurements of these bins, which occupy a region of the high-redshift L-T relation not previously sampled, are compared with existing measurements at low redshift in order to constrain the evolution of the L-T relation. We use the recently completed redshift-distance survey of nearby early-type galaxies (ENEAR) to measure the dipole component of the peculiar velocity field to a depth of cz ~ 6000 km s-1. The sample consists of 1145 galaxies brighter than mB = 14.5 and with cz ≤ 7000 km s-1, uniformly distributed over the whole sky, and 129 fainter cluster galaxies within the same volume. Most of the Dn-σ distances were obtained from new spectroscopic and photometric observations conducted by this project, ensuring the homogeneity of the data over the whole sky. We report the observation of plasma oscillations in an ultracold neutral plasma. With this collective mode we probe the electron density distribution and study the expansion of the plasma as a function of time. For classical plasma conditions, i.e., weak Coulomb coupling, the expansion is dominated by the pressure of the electron gas and is described by a hydrodynamic model. Discrepancies between the model and observations at low temperature and high density may be due to strong coupling of the electrons.

V442 Ophiuchi is a low-inclination (noneclipsing) nova-like cataclysmic variable. We have obtained medium resolution (1-3.5 Å), time-resolved optical spectroscopy of this interacting binary star spanning an interval of 4 yr, from 1995 August to 1999 June. Using an Hα radial velocity curve constructed from our combined spectroscopic data sets, we have determined that Porb = 0.1243 days for V442 Oph, breaking the long-standing 1 day alias ambiguity in its orbital period. V442 Oph shares many of the characteristics of the group of cataclysmic variables known as the SW Sextantis stars. We derive a method for inverting emission line profiles formed in supernova ejecta. The derivation assumes spherical symmetry and homologous expansion (i.e., v(r)∝r), is analytic, and even takes account of occultation by a pseudo-photosphere. Previous inversion methods have been developed which are restricted to optically thin lines, but the particular case of homologous expansion permits an analytic result for lines of arbitrary optical depth. In fact, we show that the quantity that is generically retrieved is the run of line intensity Iλ with radius in the ejecta. This result is quite general, and so could be applied to resonance lines, …

We have measured the kinetic energy release (KER) distributions for electron-induced dissociation of mass-selected molecular parent and fragment ions of propane. They are compared with distributions determined for spontaneous (metastable) dissociation. The average KER for induced dissociation of C3H8+ into C3H7+ is 13.2 +/- 1.2 meV, about 42% larger than for the spontaneous reaction. This large difference is attributed to the dramatically reduced time at which the induced reaction can be sampled. In contrast, the KER for dissociation of C3H7+ into C3H5+, which is characterized by a large reverse activation energy, is hardly affected by the experimental time scale. (C) …

We study the effects of dynamical quarks on the static quark potential at distances shorter than those where string breaking is expected. Quenched calculations and calculations with three flavors of dynamical quarks are done on sets of lattices with the lattice spacings matched within about one percent. The effect of the sea quarks on the shape of the potential is clearly visible. We investigate the consequences of these effects in a very crude model, namely solving Schrödinger’s equation in the resulting potential.

Elongation factor (EF) Tu promotes the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA (aa-tRNA) to the acceptor site of the ribosome. This process requires the formation of a ternary complex (EF-Tu·GTP·aa-tRNA). EF-Tu is released from the ribosome as an EF-Tu·GDP complex. Exchange of GDP for GTP is carried out through the formation of a complex with EF-Ts (EF-Tu·Ts). Mammalian mitochondrial EF-Tu (EF-Tumt) differs from the corresponding prokaryotic factors in having a much lower affinity for guanine nucleotides. Two Barremian-Aptian sequences studied in Durango and Nuevo Leon States, northeastern Mexico include three lithic units which have been described as the Cupido Formation of Barremian-early Early Aptian age, its lateral equivalent, the Lower Tamaulipas Formation, and the La Pena Formation extending through the early Albian.

The present work improves the existing ammonite Aptian biozonation by considering constraints associated with a discontinuous spatial and temporal record of the different taxa within the La Pena Formation.

A moratorium on the taking of American shad (Alosa sapidissima) in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries was established by the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) beginning 1 January 1994. The prohibition applied to both recreational and commercial fishers. The moratorium was imposed at a time when commercial catch rates of American shad in Virginia's rivers were experiencing declines. Data from the commercial fishery were the best available for assessing the status of individual stocks. Catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) data were compiled from logbooks that recorded landings by commercial fishermen using staked gill nets at various locations throughout the middle reaches of …

A waveform-matched waveform interpolation (WMWI) technique is presented which offers improved signal analysis over standard WI coders and, in the unquantised case, perfect reconstruction. In WMWI, an accurate representation of speech evolution is formed by extracting consecutive pitch periods of a time-warped, constant pitch residual. A pitch track optimisation technique is described which ensures that the critically sampled pitch periods can be effectively decomposed into a slowly evolving and rapidly evolving waveform, allowing efficient quantisation.

Integrated services IP networks are expected to provide a variety of services with differentiated QoS. This requires the implementation of mechanisms that can discriminate service classes in terms of QoS. The IETF has recently proposed a differentiated services (Diffserv) framework for provision of QoS. In this paper we analyse the performance of two Diffserv mechanisms: threshold dropping and priority scheduling in terms of packet loss and mean packet delay. The surface Debye temperature of the NiMnSb (100) epitaxial films has been obtained using low energy electron diffraction, inverse photoemission, and core-level photoemission. The normal dynamic motion of the (100) surface results in a value for the effective surface Debye temperature of 145613 K. This is far smaller than the bulk Debye temperature of 31265 K obtained from wave vector dependent inelastic neutron scattering. Quantum Computation Through Entangling Single Photons In Multipath Interferometers, John C. Howell, John A. Yeazell

Single-photon interferometry has been used to simulate quantum computations. Its use has been limited to studying few-bit applications due to rapid growth in physical size with numbers of bits. We propose a hybrid approach that employs n photons, each having L degrees of freedom yielding Ln basis states. The photons are entangled via a quantum nondemolition measurement. This approach introduces the essential element of quantum computing, that is, entanglement into the interferometry. Using these techniques, we demonstrate a controlled-NOT gate and a Grover's search circuit. These ideas are also applicable to the study of nonlocal correlations in many dimensions.
