Observations On Lemon Cells, Jerry Goodisman Apr 2001

Observations On Lemon Cells, Jerry Goodisman

Chemistry - All Scholarship

In many general chemistry texts (1), the electrochemistry chapter is introduced with a picture of a “lemon cell”, leads of Zn and Cu piercing a lemon (or sometimes a grapefruit). A voltmeter connected across them shows a potential of about 1 V. (It has been shown how several fruits connected in series can be used to run a calculator [2].) The texts then discuss oxidation–reduction, half-cells, and the rest of what we teach freshmen about electrochemistry, and the lemon is never mentioned again.

It would appear to be questionable scientific pedagogy to present something, even something …

Infrared Spectroscopy Of Symbiotic Stars. Iii. First Orbits For Three S-Type Systems, Francis C. Fekel, Kenneth H. Hinkle, Richard Joyce, Michael F. Skrutskie

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Infrared radial velocities have been used to derive the first well-determined orbital elements for the cool giants of three symbiotic systems, BF Cyg, V1329 Cyg, and V343 Ser=AS 289. Periods found for BF Cyg and V1329 Cyg from the radial velocity data are in good agreement with periods previously determined for their light variations, and the orbits are circular. Masses for the components of BF Cyg and V1329 Cyg were determined by combining our orbital elements for the cool giants with elements for their hot stars. BF Cyg and V1329 Cyg are shown to be detached binary systems. The third …

Physics Faculty Publications

Schottky barrier diodes, on both Ga and N faces of a ∼300-μm-thick free-standing GaN layer, grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) on Al2O3 followed by laser separation, were studied by capacitance–voltage and deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) measurements. From a 1/C2 vs V analysis, the barrier heights of Ni/Au Schottky contacts were determined to be different for the two polar faces: 1.27 eV for the Ga face, and 0.75 eV for the N face. In addition to the four common DLTS traps observed previously in other epitaxial GaN including HVPE-grown GaN a new trap …

The flux synthesis of single crystals of the isostructural compounds tristrontium zinc platinum hexaoxide, Sr3ZnPtO6, and tristrontium cadmium platinum hexaoxide, Sr3CdPtO6, is reported. The compounds adopt the pseudo-one-dimensional rhombohedral K4CdCl6 structure type, and feature chains of face-shared distorted ZnO6 or CdO6 trigonal prisms and PtO6 octahedra, surrounded by columns of Sr2+ ions. All transition metals are located on the threefold axis of symmetry, while the Sr2+ cations lie on twofold axes.

Formula: Sr3ZnPtO6 and Sr3CdPtO6

Simulating Ultrasonic Sensing With The Lattice Gas Model, Phillip J. Mckerrow, S. M. Zhu, S. New Apr 2001

Simulating Ultrasonic Sensing With The Lattice Gas Model, Phillip J. Mckerrow, S. M. Zhu, S. New

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

People have difficulty understanding ultrasonic sensing because they cannot see sound. The purpose of simulation is to overcome this problem by visualizing the scattering of ultrasonic waves off objects. The lattice gas model calculates wave behavior with finite difference equations to produce data suitable for grayscale visualization. This visualization is useful when designing ultrasonic sensing systems for navigating mobile robots. Situations that result in the sensor failing to detect an object can be studied with the simulator.

Ecosystem Factors Influencing The Success Of Riparian Restoration In Whatcom County, Crystal Elliot Apr 2001

Ecosystem Factors Influencing The Success Of Riparian Restoration In Whatcom County, Crystal Elliot

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

Riparian corridors are complex and diverse ecosystems that are essential to the maintenance of global health. The total area occupied by riparian ecosystems in the United States has plummeted in the last 200 years to only 20% of its initial size. The recent movement to restore these fragile and complex ecosystems has produced outcomes of variable success. The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association’s riparian restoration project at Schell Creek in Femdale, WA provides an example of an effort that exhibits mixed results. Our experiment explored reasons for the variable success of the restoration vegetation and investigated several ecosystem factors that may …

An Investigation Into The Mechanistic Interplay Between Th1 And Th2 Cells In Allergic Disease, Christine Marie Rose Apr 2001

An Investigation Into The Mechanistic Interplay Between Th1 And Th2 Cells In Allergic Disease, Christine Marie Rose

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

The incidence of allergic disease has increased steadily in western countries over the past few decades. Substantial amounts of research have been geared toward elucidating the mechanisms whereby some people develop allergies and others do not. As with all development theories, the question revolves around the debate of genetics versus environment - attempting to determine the relative contribution from heredity and nurture in the development of an allergic phenotype.

Heredity has long been identified as a risk factor for allergies. Children born of atopic (allergic disease attributed to heredity) parents are at an increased risk for developing atopy themselves. Consequently, …

Exact Solutions Of The Schroedinger Equation: Connection Between Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics And Spectrum Generating Algebras, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Jeffrey Mallow, C. Rasinariu, Uday P. Sukhatne Apr 2001

Exact Solutions Of The Schroedinger Equation: Connection Between Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics And Spectrum Generating Algebras, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Jeffrey Mallow, C. Rasinariu, Uday P. Sukhatne

Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Using supersymmetric quantum mechanics, one can obtain analytic expressions for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for all nonrelativistic shape invariant Hamiltonians. These Hamiltonians also possess spectrum generating algebras and are hence solvable by an independent, group theoretical method. In this paper, we demonstrate the equivalence of the two methods of solution, and review related progress in this field.

Understanding And Measuring The Sources Of Variation In The Prioritization Of Regression Test Suites, Sebastian Elbaum, David Gable, Gregg Rothermel Apr 2001

Understanding And Measuring The Sources Of Variation In The Prioritization Of Regression Test Suites, Sebastian Elbaum, David Gable, Gregg Rothermel

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Test case prioritization techniques let testers order their test cases so that those with higher priority, according to some criterion, are executed earlier than those with lower priority. In previous work, we examined a variety of prioritization techniques to determine their ability to improve the rate of fault detection of test suites. Our studies showed that the rate of fault detection of test suites could be significantly improved by using more powerful prioritization techniques. In addition, they indicated that rate of fault detection was closely associated with the target program. We also observed a large quantity of unexplained variance, indicating …

Electron Self-Energy For The K And L Shells At Low Nuclear Charge, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Peter J. Mohr, Gerhard Soff

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A nonperturbative numerical evaluation of the one-photon electron self-energy for the K- and L-shell states of hydrogenlike ions with nuclear charge numbers Z =1 to 5 is described. Our calculation for the 1S1/2 state has a numerical uncertainty of 0.8 Hz in atomic hydrogen, and for the L-shell states (2S1/2 , 2P1/2 , and 2P3/2) the numerical uncertainty is 1.0 Hz. The method of evaluation for the ground state and for the excited states is described in detail. The numerical results are compared to results based on known terms in the expansion of the self-energy …

Statistical Modeling And Inference Regarding Risk In Case Control Studies, Deborah Kay Shepherd Apr 2001

Statistical Modeling And Inference Regarding Risk In Case Control Studies, Deborah Kay Shepherd

Doctoral Dissertations

Some of the common measures of risk used m epidemiology today are the relative risk, the odds ratio, the attributable risk, and the chi-square goodness of fit test. All of these measures have their shortcomings. A new approach to measuring risk in case-control studies is to use the unitless measure of the coefficient of variation of incidence of disease over the risk categories, 2, first proposed by Begg et al. (1998). Begg et al. (1998), also showed that the product of multiple risk factors may be compared to an overall measure of the square of the coefficient of variation …

Statistical Properties Of Maximum Likelihood Estimates For Accelerated Lifetime Data Under The Weibull Model, Mahmoud A. Yousef Apr 2001

Statistical Properties Of Maximum Likelihood Estimates For Accelerated Lifetime Data Under The Weibull Model, Mahmoud A. Yousef

Doctoral Dissertations

Pipe rehabilitation liners are often installed in host pipes that lie below the water table. As such, they are subjected to external hydrostatic pressure. The external pressure leads to early deformation in the liners, which could ultimately lead to its failing or buckling before its expected service lifetime is achieved. Experiments involving long term buckling behavior of liners are typically accelerated lifetime testing procedures. In an accelerated testing procedure a liner is subjected to a constant external hydrostatic pressure and observed until it fails or for a certain time, t whichever occurs first. Liners that do not fail at time …

Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach

"The Wisconsin H-a [alpha] Mapper (WHAM), a remotely operable, semi-automated Fabry-Perot located at Kitt Peak Observatory, has been making an all-sky survey of interstellar hydrogen Balmer a [alpha] (H-a [alpha]) emissions since 1997. Using the annular summing spectroscopy technique, WHAM has acquired ~[approx.] 37,000 spectra to date, spanning almost 100 nights of observations. Since all of the galactic emission spectral data contain the terrestrial H-a [alpha] (6562.7 Å) emission line, these measurements constitute a rich source of geocoronal data for investigating natural variability in the upper atmosphere. The WHAM observations also serve as a benchmark for comparison with future …

Solution Structure Of B. Subtilis Acyl Carrier Protein, Guang-Yi Xu, Amy Tam, Laura Lin, Jeffrey Hixon, Christian C. Fritz, Robert Powers

Robert Powers Publications

Background: Acyl carrier protein (ACP) is a fundamental component of fatty acid biosynthesis in which the fatty acid chain is elongated by the fatty acid synthetase system while attached to the 4’-phosphopantetheine prosthetic group (4’- PP) of ACP. Activation of ACP is mediated by holo-acyl carrier protein synthase (ACPS) when ACPS transfers the 4’-PP moiety from coenzyme A (CoA) to Ser36 of apo-ACP. Both ACP and ACPS have been identified as essential for E. coli viability and potential targets for development of antibiotics.

Results: The solution structure of B. subtilis ACP (9 kDa) has been determined using two-dimensional and three-dimensional …

Because it is one of the most inaccessible places on earth, this large, rich ecosystem has remained relatively untouched. There is, however, increasing evidence that this area is threatened by a number of activities, including mining, illegal hunting and fishing, indiscriminate use of fire, agricultural development, and deforestation. Careless use of mercury in gold mining, particularly in the northern Pantanal, may have resulted in acute and chronic ecosystem disruption (Hylander et al. 1994, Nogueira et al. 1997, Leady and Gottgens 2001). Wildlife poaching and live animal trade are widespread although hard to quantify. During six months in 1985, the skins …

A Comparison Of Methods For Detection Of Qualitative Interaction In Multicenter Trials, Boyd Jay Hanson Apr 2001

A Comparison Of Methods For Detection Of Qualitative Interaction In Multicenter Trials, Boyd Jay Hanson

Dissertations

This research evaluated and compared three methods for the detection of qualitative treatment-by-center interaction proposed by Azzalini and Cox, Gail and Simon and Ciminera et al., through the analysis of simulated data for multicenter studies of two and three centers with two treatments. The effect of unequal sample size and the presence of an overall treatment effect on characteristics of the methods were examined.

The approach, underlying assumptions and theory of the three methods differ. For this study, they were adapted to establish a common basis for evaluation, thus allowing a meaningful comparison of the methods. For the test presented …

Restoration And Reconstruction From Overlapping Images For Multi-Image Fusion, Stephen E. Reichenbach, Jing Li Apr 2001

Restoration And Reconstruction From Overlapping Images For Multi-Image Fusion, Stephen E. Reichenbach, Jing Li

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

This paper describes a technique for restoring and reconstructing a scene from overlapping images. In situations where there are multiple, overlapping images of the same scene, it may be desirable to create a single image that most closely approximates the scene, based on the data in all of the available images. For example, successive swaths acquired by NASA’s moderate imaging spectrometer (MODIS) will overlap, particularly at wide scan angles, creating a severe visual artifact in the output image. Resampling the overlapping swaths to produce a more accurate image on a uniform grid requires restoration and reconstruction. The one-pass restoration and …

Photoionization cross sections and asymmetry (β) parameters for Kr 3s, 3p, and 3d subshells have been measured and calculated in the 300–1300-eV photon energy range. Good agreement between experiment and theory is found for both cross-section branching ratios and β parameters. Interchannel coupling among the channels arising from 3s, 3p, and 3d subshells is found to be necessary for quantitative accuracy of the theory. This shows that the interchannel coupling phenomenology far above threshold, found previously for outer shells of Ne and Ar, is also operative for inner atomic shells.

A Strategy For Improved Expression Of Permuted Myoglobins, Anna Buser Apr 2001

A Strategy For Improved Expression Of Permuted Myoglobins, Anna Buser

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

Our research is aimed at generating and characterizing topological mutants of sperm whale myoglobin (swMb). The long-term experimental design involves the production of circular permuteins from swMb genes fused by a linker and determination of the effect of linker sequence on protein stability. We have expressed circularly permuted sperm whale myoglobins in E. coli including variants that start at the C helix and end with the B helix (CBLx), and others beginning at the H helix and ending with the G helix (HGLx). Expression yields for mutant myoglobins have been shown to correlate with stabilities of the mutants (Hargrove et …

Invasive non-native plants are a serious threat to native species, communities, and ecosystems in many areas around the world. They can compete with and displace native plants, animals, and other organisms that depend on them, alter ecosystem functions and cycles significantly, hybridize with native species, and promote other invaders. The good news is that many plant invasions can be reversed, halted or slowed, and in certain situations, even badly infested areas can be restored to healthy systems dominated by native species. In most instances this requires taking action to control and manage those invasive plants. This handbook provides you with …

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Large Systems, Patrick B. (Patrick Brian) Kohl, David L. Patrick Apr 2001

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Large Systems, Patrick B. (Patrick Brian) Kohl, David L. Patrick

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

Chiral symmetry breaking in a fluid of achiral molecules at a liquid-solid interface was studied using atomistic molecular dynamics simulation. The molecules were achiral in three dimensions, but left- and right-handed forms could be distinguished in the reduced symmetry environment of an interfacial fluid. The system consisted of a thick fluid film in contact with a crystalline monolayer adsorbed to a solid surface. When molecules in the crystalline monolayer were arranged in uniformly chiral configurations, a homochiral enantiomeric excess developed in the adjacent interfacial fluid. Fluid properties were characterized through measurements of chiral, nematic, and ferroelectric order parameters, and diffusion …
