It ls the of coasklerable impartance to identify chromosontal locations of tho genes that control a quantitative character. Linkage analysis (Ou 1990), which deals with the deduction of linkagn and estimation of recombination fractions among the loci controlling a qualitative/quantitative character and major loci wkoo poertions are knows aprfori, is widely used for localisation of gens. Although statistical methodologies for magplag gemen determining dichotomos qualitative charactes in humans aro well-developed, the demicrant of …

Boolean Functions With Important Cryptographic Properties., Subhamoy Maitra Dr. Feb 2001

Boolean Functions With Important Cryptographic Properties., Subhamoy Maitra Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this thesis we concentrate on properties of cryptographically significant Boolean functions. The techniques are mainly combinstorial and provide new resulta on enumeration and construction of such functions. Initially we concentrate on a partieular subset of Boolean functions called the symmetric Boolean functions. A closed form expression for the Walsh transform of an arbitrary symmetric Boolean function is presented. We completely characterize the symmetric functions with maximum nonlinearity and show that the maximum nonlinearity of n-variable symmetrie function can be 2n-1-2[n-1l2], Moreover, new classes of symmetric balanced and symmetric correlation immune functions are considered. We provide a randomised heuristic to construct balanced …

Interplay Between Plasmons And The Band Structure For The Mo(112) Surface, I. N. Yakovkin, Jiandi Zhang, Peter A. Dowben Feb 2001

Interplay Between Plasmons And The Band Structure For The Mo(112) Surface, I. N. Yakovkin, Jiandi Zhang, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

Recent photoemission and inverse photoemission results for the Mo(112) surface are discussed in the framework of the calculated band structure. For the Mo(112) surface, the main photoemission features combine contributions from both the surface and the bulk. Except for those photon energies near to excitations of the bulk and multipole surface plasmons, the comparison of the bulk band structure, along the k points normal to the surface, shows a good agreement with photoemission spectra in the position of the critical points. The dominant surface states at Г̅̅̅ are found to have the a1 symmetry, while the band along Г̅̅̅ …

The field of environmental toxicology, particularly as related to the area of ecotoxicology, continues to be a rapidly developing discipline of environmental science (Connell and Miller, 1984; Duffus 1980; Guthie and Perry, 1980; Hoffman et al., 1995; Moriarity 1988; Truhaut, 1977). The term ecotoxicology was introduced by Truhaut in 1969 (Truhaut, 1977) and this field is a natural extension of toxicology. It is best defined as the study of the fate and effects of toxic substances on an ecosystem and is based on scientific research employing both field and laboratory methods (Kendall, 1982; Kendall, 1992; and Hoffman et al., 1995). …

Dansylation Of Hydroxyl And Carboxylic Acid Functional Groups, Ronald Bartzatt Feb 2001

Dansylation Of Hydroxyl And Carboxylic Acid Functional Groups, Ronald Bartzatt

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Fluorescent labeling of primary and secondary amines using dansyl chloride has been widely used in the past. Its application provides an extremely sensitive means to detect amine functional groups to amounts of less than 1 mg of material. This work describes a method for the dansylation of hydroxyl (–OH) and carboxylic acid (–COOH) functional groups. This technique is demonstrated with ethanol, gamma hydroxy butyric acid (GHB), benzoic acid, and p-chloroaniline. Sensitivity of detection for all compounds are microgram or microliter. For the compounds ethanol and GHB which are liquids at room temperature, as little as 1 ml quantity can be …

Inclusive Jet Production In Pp̅ Collisions, B. Abbott Feb 2001

Inclusive Jet Production In Pp̅ Collisions, B. Abbott

Gregory Snow Publications

We report a new measurement of the pseudorapidity (η) and transverse-energy (ET) dependence of the inclusive jet production cross section in pp̅ collisions at √s = TeV using 95 pb-1 of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The differential cross section d2σ/(dEr) is presented up to |η| = 3, significantly extending previous measurements. The results are in good overall agreement with next-to-leading order predictions from QCD and indicate a preference for certain parton distribution functions.

Physics Faculty Publications

We demonstrated a nonvolatile grating using an azobenzene polymer film with polarized two color beams. The reorientation of azobenzene molecules can be optimized when the two color light beams are polarized perpendicularly. The stored information can be read repeatedly without volatility with the same wavelength as the writing beam.

Effects Of Sterilization On Territory Fidelity And Maintenance, Pair Bonds, And Survival Rates Of Free-Ranging Coyotes, Cassity Bromley, Eric M. Gese Feb 2001

Effects Of Sterilization On Territory Fidelity And Maintenance, Pair Bonds, And Survival Rates Of Free-Ranging Coyotes, Cassity Bromley, Eric M. Gese

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Predation on sheep by coyotes (Canis latrans) is a longstanding problem for sheep producers. Current research suggests that surgical sterilization of coyotes could prove to be an effective method of reducing their depredation rates on domestic sheep by modifying their predatory behavior. However, for sterilization to be a viable management tool, the territorial and affiliative behaviors of pack members would need to remain in place. We tested whether surgically sterilized coyotes maintained pair bonds and territories in the same manner as intact coyotes. We also examined if territory fidelity and survival rates differed between sterile and intact coyotes. …

Differential cross sections for dijet photoproduction in association with a leading neutron using the reaction e+ + p → e+ + n + jet + jet + Xr have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 6.4 pb-1. The fraction of dijet events with a leading neutron in the final state was studied as a function of the jet kinematic variables. The cross sections were measured for jet transverse energies EjetT > 6 GeV, neutron energy En > 400 GeV, and neutron production angle θn < 0.8 mrad. The data are broadly consistent with factorization of the lepton and hadron vertices and with a simple one-pion-exchange model. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Alfalfa As A Cash Hay Crop, John Nowak Feb 2001

Alfalfa As A Cash Hay Crop, John Nowak

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Over the years we have all learned of the great potential alfalfa has as a forage crop in Kentucky. We have seen it used as hay, haylage and even pasture. Many aspects of our agri-business community have alfalfa as an important part of their business.

Alfalfa For Beef Cattle, W. Roy Burris Feb 2001

Alfalfa For Beef Cattle, W. Roy Burris

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Alfalfa is sometimes said to be "too good" for beef cattle. Although it's nutritional value may sometimes exceed beef cows' needs, to dismiss it's potential for beef cattle would be a mistake. Alfalfa can be useful as a harvested feed or as a grazing crop.

Alfalfa For Dairy Cattle, Donna M. Amaral-Phillips Feb 2001

Alfalfa For Dairy Cattle, Donna M. Amaral-Phillips

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Alfalfa is known as the queen of the forage crops and for good reasons. Alfalfa is an excellent forage for dairy cattle because it provides nutrients needed by dairy cows in a package which is highly digestible and cost effective. Alfalfa can be grazed directly by cattle or harvested as hay, haylage, or batage. Dairy farmers will purchase locally-grown hay if it is high quality (RFV greater than 150). When marketing cash hay one needs to understand that the quality of alfalfa greatly impacts milk production and economics of a dairy operation. This impact is felt even when as little …

Alfalfa Hay For Horses, Laurie Lawrence Feb 2001

Alfalfa Hay For Horses, Laurie Lawrence

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Horse owners frequently mention cleanliness, color and cutting when it comes to choosing hay. Cleanliness should be the most important factor in selecting horse hay. Hay that contains dust or mold can inflame the respiratory tract. It is also possible for hay mold to affect other systems in the horse such as the digestive system and liver. Some horses suffer from a chronic respiratory condition that seriously impairs their ability to breathe normally. This condition, commonly known as heaves, worsens when horses are fed moldy or dusty hay. Horses with heaves are exercise intolerant and thus have little value except …

Reducing The Risk Of Bloat, Patty Scharko Feb 2001

Reducing The Risk Of Bloat, Patty Scharko

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Bloat refers to excessive accumulation of gas in the rumen. Bloat results when an animal can not eructate or "belch up" gases produced in the process of rumen fermentation. The gas may be in the free form or may be mixed with rumen contents in the form of froth. It occurs both on pasture and in feedlots and can be a major cause of death in cattle wherever intensive farming is practiced. Additional losses can include decreased milk production and reduced rate of gain. Although legumes may increase the opportunity for bloat to occur, fear of bloat should not keep …

Grazing Alfalfa: Is It Right For You?, Jimmy C. Henning Feb 2001

Grazing Alfalfa: Is It Right For You?, Jimmy C. Henning

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Grazing alfalfa can be a very profitable and valuable practice for many Kentucky farmers. How do you know if this practice will work for you? First, you must be able to grow alfalfa. Second, you must address the concerns that are specific to grazing alfalfa.

Establishing Alfalfa Using No-Till Techniques, Gary Bates Feb 2001

Establishing Alfalfa Using No-Till Techniques, Gary Bates

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

There have been many changes in agriculture over the fast 50 years. One of the greatest has been the use of no-tiff planting methods. The development of drill and herbicides has made no-till seedings as successful as seeding into prepared land.

Am-Pm Cutting Of Alfalfa, Garry D. Lacefield, Michael Collins, Jimmy C. Henning Feb 2001

Am-Pm Cutting Of Alfalfa, Garry D. Lacefield, Michael Collins, Jimmy C. Henning

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Over the past twenty years of this Conference we have spent considerable time discussing "Alfalfa Harvest Management." We have discussed the importance of stage of maturity and its impact on quality on many occasions. We have presented research on many aspects of hay and haylage management. An overall theme for all the discussions has been "harvest for quality," with emphasis on saving the leaves during the entire harvesting process. Our recommendations have, are, and will continue to be centered around those management practices that will result in the greatest opportunity for preserving alfalfa quality from standing crop to feeding. This …

Can We Follow Alfalfa With Alfalfa?, Monroe Rasnake Feb 2001

Can We Follow Alfalfa With Alfalfa?, Monroe Rasnake

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

The question of how soon alfalfa can safely be reseeded following an old stand of alfalfa has been debated for many years. It has been a topic of the Kentucky Alfalfa Conference on at least two other occasions (Rasnake, 1995; Rasnake 1999). Recent research has attempted to determine what causes the problem, how it is affected by soil conditions, and whether the problem can be reduced through plant breeding. This paper will review some of the research.

Contributions To Random Interactions And Dynamical Systems., Santanu Chakraborty Dr. Feb 2001

Contributions To Random Interactions And Dynamical Systems., Santanu Chakraborty Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In recent years random iterations of maps on Polish spaces has gained prominence. They are. nice examples of Markov processes whose invariant measures can be used in Computer imaging (see Berger ( 1). They also arise as random perturabations of deterministic dynamical systems.Let S be a Polish space with its Borel a-field. Let r be a collection of Borel maps from S to S. Let P be a probability on r. Then starting with a point z in S, we choose a map yn er according to the law P and move to ya(x). Then we choose 2 € r …

Neutrino Reactions On The Deuteron, S. Nakamura, T. Sato, Vladimir Gudkov, K. Kubodera Feb 2001

Neutrino Reactions On The Deuteron, S. Nakamura, T. Sato, Vladimir Gudkov, K. Kubodera

Faculty Publications

The cross sections for the ν-d and ν̅ -d reactions are calculated for incident energy up to Eν=170 MeV with the use of a phenomenological Lagrangian approach. We assess and improve the reliability of the employed calculational method by examining the dependence of the results on various input and approximations that go into the calculation. The main points of improvement over the existing work are (1) use of the “modern” NN potentials, (2) use of the more accurate nucleon weak-interaction form factors, and (3) monitoring the strength of a vertex that governs the exchange-current contribution, with the use …

Diamagnetic Persistent Current In Diffusive Normal-Metal Rings, E. M.Q. Jariwala, P. Mohanty, M. B. Ketchen, Richard A. Webb Feb 2001

Diamagnetic Persistent Current In Diffusive Normal-Metal Rings, E. M.Q. Jariwala, P. Mohanty, M. B. Ketchen, Richard A. Webb

Faculty Publications

We have measured a diamagnetic persistent current with flux periodicities of both h/e and h/2e in an array of thirty diffusive mesoscopic gold rings. At the lowest temperatures, the magnitudes of the currents per ring corresponding to the h/e- and h/2e-periodic responses are both comparable to the Thouless energy Ecħ/τD, where τD is the diffusion time. Taken in conjunction with earlier experiments, our results strongly challenge the conventional theories of persistent current. We consider a new approach associated with the saturation of …

Calculation Of 13C Chemical Shifts In Rna Nucleosides: Structure-13C Chemical Shift Relationships, Paolo Rossi, Gerard S. Harbison Feb 2001

Calculation Of 13C Chemical Shifts In Rna Nucleosides: Structure-13C Chemical Shift Relationships, Paolo Rossi, Gerard S. Harbison

Gerard Harbison Publications

Isotropic 13C chemical shifts of the ribose sugar in model RNA nucleosides are calculated using SCF and DFT-GIAO ab initio methods for different combinations of ribose sugar pucker, exocyclic torsion angle, and glycosidic torsion angle. Idealized conformations were obtained using structures that were fully optimized by ab initio DFT methods starting with averaged parameters from a collection of crystallographic data. Solid-state coordinates of accurate crystal or neutron diffraction structures were also examined directly without optimization. The resulting 13C chemical shifts for the two sets of calculations are then compared. The GIAO-DFT method overestimates the shifts by an average …

Triangular Surface Tiling Groups For Low Genus, Sean A. Broughton, Robert M. Dirks, Maria Sloughter, C. Ryan Vinroot Feb 2001

Triangular Surface Tiling Groups For Low Genus, Sean A. Broughton, Robert M. Dirks, Maria Sloughter, C. Ryan Vinroot

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Consider a surface, S, with a kaleidoscopic tiling by non-obtuse triangles (tiles), i.e., each local reflection in a side of a triangle extends to an isometry of the surface, preserving the tiling. The tiling is geodesic if the side of each triangle extends to a closed geodesic on the surface consisting of edges of tiles. The reflection group G*, generated by these reflections, is called the tiling group of the surface. This paper classifies, up to isometry, all geodesic, kaleidoscopic tilings by triangles, of hyperbolic surfaces of genus up to 13. As a part of this classification the tiling groups …

Ice Nucleation In Sulfuric Acid And Ammonium Sulfate Particles, Anthony J. Prenni, Matthew E. Wise, Sarah D. Brooks, Margaret A. Tolbert Feb 2001

Ice Nucleation In Sulfuric Acid And Ammonium Sulfate Particles, Anthony J. Prenni, Matthew E. Wise, Sarah D. Brooks, Margaret A. Tolbert

CUP Faculty Research

Cirrus clouds are composed of ice particles and are expected to form in the upper troposphere when highly dilute sulfate aerosols cool and become supersaturated with respect to ice. In the laboratory we have used Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to monitor ice nucleation from sulfate particles for relevant compositions of sulfuric acid/water and ammonium sulfate/water aerosols. Measured freezing temperatures are presented as a function of aerosol composition, and results are compared to existing aerosol data. We find that sulfuric acid solution aerosol exhibits greater supercooling than ammonium sulfate solution aerosol of similar weight percent. Ice saturation ratios based on these …

Cross-Shelf Eddy Heat Transport In A Wind-Free Coastal Ocean Undergoing Winter Time Cooling, James M. Pringle Feb 2001

Cross-Shelf Eddy Heat Transport In A Wind-Free Coastal Ocean Undergoing Winter Time Cooling, James M. Pringle

Earth Sciences

A steady state cross-shelf density gradient of a wind-free coastal ocean undergoing winter time cooling is found for cooling and geometries which do not vary in the along-shelf direction. The steady state cross-shelf density gradient exists even when the average density of the water continues to increase. The steady state density gradient dan be attained in less than a winter for parameters appropriate to the mid-Atlantic Eight. The cross-shelf eddy-driven buoyancy fluxes which cause this steady state gradient are found to depend critically on bottom friction and bottom slope, and the coastal polyna solutions of Chapman and Gawarkiewicz [1997] are …

Secular Variations Of Oi 5577 Å Airglow In The Mesopause Region Induced By Transient Gravity Wave Packets, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., R. L. Walterscheid Feb 2001

Secular Variations Of Oi 5577 Å Airglow In The Mesopause Region Induced By Transient Gravity Wave Packets, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., R. L. Walterscheid

Publications

We employ a 2-dimensional, time-dependent, fully nonlinear model of minor species in the mesopause region and our Spectral Full-Wave Model to simulate the response of minor species and the OI 5577 Å airglow to a gravity wave packet in the mesopause region. Gravity waves affect the time-averaged distribution of minor species in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region through constituent fluxes induced by violation of the non-acceleration conditions due to wave transience and dissipation. In addition, wave perturbed chemistry can induce a flux of chemically active species. Simulations are performed with nominal values of eddy diffusion coefficients in the …

Guidelines For Eradication Of Terrestrial Vertebrates: A European Contribution To The Invasive Alien Species Issue, Piero Genovesi Ph.D. Feb 2001

Guidelines For Eradication Of Terrestrial Vertebrates: A European Contribution To The Invasive Alien Species Issue, Piero Genovesi Ph.D.

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Invasive alien species (IAS) are now acknowledged as one of the major threats to biodiversity, together with habitat loss and fragmentation. Furthermore, it is predicted that biotic invasions will become the major engines of ecological disintegration in the future; this is because of the increased spread of alien species, due to the greater mobility of the human population, rapidly growing transport technology, expanding tourism and travel activities, and world-wide free trade (Cox 1999, Ruesink et al. 1995).

In addition to the threats to biodiversity, the direct costs of IAS are immense. It is difficult to estimate precisely the economic losses …

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Of The Cassiopeia A And Kepler Supernova Remnants, Christopher L. Gerardy, Robert A. Fesen Feb 2001

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Of The Cassiopeia A And Kepler Supernova Remnants, Christopher L. Gerardy, Robert A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Near-infrared spectra (0.95 – 2.4 μm) of the Cassiopeia A and Kepler supernova remnants (SNRs) are presented. Low-dispersion (R ≈ 700) spectra were obtained for five bright fast-moving ejecta knots (FMKs) at two locations on the main shell and for three bright circumstellar knots (QSFs) near the southwest rim of Cas A. The main shell FMKs in Cas A exhibit a sparse near- infrared spectrum dominated by [S II] 1.03 μm emission with a handful of other, fainter emission lines. Among these are two high-ionization silicon lines, [Si VI] 1.96 μm and [Si X] 1.43 μm, which have been detected …
