Optimization Of Amplifier Placements In Switch-Based Optical Networks, Ling Zong, Byrav Ramamurthy Jan 2001

Optimization Of Amplifier Placements In Switch-Based Optical Networks, Ling Zong, Byrav Ramamurthy

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) offers a solution to the problem of exploiting the large bandwidth on optical links; it is the current favorite multiplexing technology for optical communication networks. Due to the high cost of an optical amplifier, it is desirable to strategically place the amplifiers throughout the network in a way that guarantees that all the signals are adequately amplified while minimizing the total number amplifiers being used. Previous studies all consider a star-based network. This paper demonstrates an original approach for solving the problem in switch-based WDM optical network assuming the traffic matrix is always the permutation of …

Design Verification And Functional Testing Of Finite State Machines, Mark W. Weiss, Sharad C. Seth, Shashank K. Mehta, Kent L. Einspahr Jan 2001

Design Verification And Functional Testing Of Finite State Machines, Mark W. Weiss, Sharad C. Seth, Shashank K. Mehta, Kent L. Einspahr

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

The design of a finite state machine can be verified by simulating all its state transitions. Typically, state transitions involve many don’t care inputs that must be fully expanded for an exhaustive functional verification. However, by exploiting the knowledge about the design structure it is shown that only a few vectors from the fully expanded set suffice for both design verification and testing for manufacturing defects. The main contributions of the paper include a unified fault model for design errors and manufacturing faults and a function-based analysis of the circuit structure for the purpose of generating tests under the unified …

A Generator Of Random Instances Of Binary Finite Constraint Satisfaction Problems With Controllable Levels Of Interchangeability, Hui Zou, Amy Beckwith, Berthe Y. Choueiry Jan 2001

A Generator Of Random Instances Of Binary Finite Constraint Satisfaction Problems With Controllable Levels Of Interchangeability, Hui Zou, Amy Beckwith, Berthe Y. Choueiry

CSE Technical Reports

In order to test the performance of algorithms for solving Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs), we must establish a large collection of CSP instances that meet a given set of specifications, such as the number of variables, domain size, constraint density, tightness, etc. The goal of this report is to describe a generator of instances that have a specified degree of interchangeability. An example of such a generator is described in (Freuder and Sabin 1997), which generates non-reflexive constraints and does not allow us to control concurrently the degree of interchangeability and tightness. We have developed a technique and written a …

Adaptive Segmentation Of Document Images, Don Sylwester, Sharad C. Seth Jan 2001

Adaptive Segmentation Of Document Images, Don Sylwester, Sharad C. Seth

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

A single-parameter text-line extraction algorithm is described along with an efficient technique for estimating the optimal value for the parameter for individual images without need for ground truth. The algorithm is based on three simple tree operations, cut, glue and flip. An XY-tree representing the segmentation is incrementally transformed to reflect a change in the parameter while intrinsic measures of the cost of the transformation are used to detect when specific tree operations would cause an error if they were performed, allowing these errors to be avoided. The algorithm correctly identified 98.8% of the area of the ground truth bounding …

Infrastructure Support For Controlled Experimentation With Software Testing And Regression Testing Techniques, Hyunsook Do, Sebastian Elbaum, Gregg Rothermel Jan 2001

Infrastructure Support For Controlled Experimentation With Software Testing And Regression Testing Techniques, Hyunsook Do, Sebastian Elbaum, Gregg Rothermel

CSE Technical Reports

Where the creation, understanding, and assessment of software testing and regression testing techniques are concerned, controlled experimentation is an indispensable research methodology. Obtaining the infrastructure necessary to support such experimentation, however, is difficult and expensive. As a result, progress in experimentation with testing techniques has been slow, and empirical data on the costs and effectiveness of techniques remains relatively scarce. To help address this problem, we have been designing and constructing infrastructure to support controlled experimentation with testing and regression testing techniques. This paper reports on the challenges faced by researchers experimenting with testing techniques, including those that inform the …

Hierarchy-Based Access Control In Distributed Environments, Jean-Camille Birget, Xukai Zou, Guevara Noubir, Byrav Ramamurthy Jan 2001

Hierarchy-Based Access Control In Distributed Environments, Jean-Camille Birget, Xukai Zou, Guevara Noubir, Byrav Ramamurthy

CSE Conference and Workshop Papers

Access control is a fundamental concern in any system that manages resources, e.g., operating systems, file systems, databases and communications systems. The problem we address is how to specify, enforce, and implement access control in distributed environments. This problem occurs in many applications such as management of distributed project resources, e-newspaper and payTV subscription services.

Starting from an access relation between users and resources, we derive a user hierarchy, a resource hierarchy, and a unified hierarchy. The unified hierarchy is then used to specify the access relation in a way that is compact and that allows efficient queries. It is …

The 17-electron complex (C5Ph5)Cr(CO)3 reacts with halogens (C6H5I•Cl2, Br2, and I2) in C6H6 to yield the dimeric oxidation products [(C5Ph5)Cr(m-X)X]2 as thermally stable solids. Reactions with other chlorinating agents similarly yield [(C5Ph5)CrCl2]2. An X-ray crystal structure of [(C5Ph5)Cr(m-Cl)Cl]2 was obtained. The magnetic properties of the Cl2 bridged dimer have been determined and modeled using the usual isotropic hamiltonian which yields J/k = –30 K. Low-temperature (77 K) Raman spectra of solid [(C5Ph5)CrX2]2 (X = Cl, I) allow assignments to be made for the metal-ring and metal halogen stretching modes in the low frequency region (< 600 cm-1). Tetrahydrofuran (THF) cleaves these dimers to yield complexes of the form (C5Ph5)CrX2(THF).

A High-Altitude Snow Chemistry Record From Amundsenisen, Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, E. Isaksson, W. Karlen, Paul Andrew Mayewski, M. Twickler, S. Whitlow

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

In this paper a detailed record of major ions from a 20 in deep firn core from Amundsenisen, western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, is presented. The core was drilled at 75degreesS, 2degrees E (2900 m.a.s.l.) during austral summer 1991/92. The following ions were measured at 3 cm resolution: Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl-, NO3-, SO42- and CH3SO3H (MSA). The core was dated back to 1865 using a combination of chemical records and volcanic reference horizons. The volcanic eruptions identified in this core are Mount Ngauruhoe, New Zealand (1974-75), Mount Agung, Indonesia (1963), Azul, Argentina (1932). and a broad peak that corresponds …

Oxygen Isotopic And Soluble Ionic Composition Of A Shallow Firn Core, Inilchek Glacier, Central Tien Shan, Karl J. Kreutz, Vladimir B. Aizen, L. Dewayne Cecil, Cameron P. Wake

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Oxygen isotopic and soluble ionic measurements made on snow-pit (2 in depth) and firn-core (12.4 m depth samples recovered from the accumulation zone 5100 m) of Inilchek glacier 43degrees N, 79degrees E) provide information on recent (1992-98) climatic and environmental conditions in the central Tien Shan region of central Asia. The combined 14.4 m snow-pit/firn-core profile lies within the firn zone, arid contains only one observed melt feature (10 m temperature = - 12 degreesC), Although some post-depositional attenuation of the sub-seasonal delta(18)O record is possible, annual cycles are apparent throughout the isotope profile. We therefore use the preserved delta(18)O …

The Spatial Variability Of Energy And Carbon Dioxide Fluxes At The Floor Of A Deciduous Forest, Kell B. Wilson, Tilden Meyers Jan 2001

The Spatial Variability Of Energy And Carbon Dioxide Fluxes At The Floor Of A Deciduous Forest, Kell B. Wilson, Tilden Meyers

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

Fluxes of carbon dioxide, water and sensible heat were measured using three different eddy covariance systems above the forest floor of a closed deciduous forest (leaf area index ~ 6). The primary objective was to examine the representativeness of a single eddy covariance system in estimating soil respiration for time scales ranging from one-half hour to more than one week. Experiments were conducted in which the eddy covariance sensors were in one of three configurations: i) collocated, ii) separated horizontally or iii) separated vertically. A measure of the variation between the three systems (CV' 0, related to the coefficient of …

Building Blocks For Reliable Complex Nonlinear Numerical Simulations, Helen Yee Jan 2001

Building Blocks For Reliable Complex Nonlinear Numerical Simulations, Helen Yee

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

This chapter describes some of the building blocks to ensure a higher level of confidence in the predictability and reliability (PAR) of numerical simulation of multiscale complex nonlinear problems. The focus is on relating PAR of numerical simulations with complex nonlinear phenomena of numerics. To isolate sources of numerical uncertainties, the possible discrepancy between the chosen partial differential equation (PDE) model and the real physics and/or experimental data is set aside. The discussion is restricted to how well numerical schemes can mimic the solution behavior of the underlying PDE model for finite time steps and grid spacings. The situation is …

Global Ice And Land Climate Studies Using Scatterometer Image Data, David G. Long, Mark Drinkwater, Benjamin Holt, Sassan Saatchi, Cheryl Bertoia Jan 2001

Global Ice And Land Climate Studies Using Scatterometer Image Data, David G. Long, Mark Drinkwater, Benjamin Holt, Sassan Saatchi, Cheryl Bertoia

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Spaceborne scatterometers have provided continuous synoptic microwave coverage of the Earth for nearly a decade. Though these scatterometers were originally designed to measure oceanic surface winds, their data are also extremely useful in a broad range of ice and land applications, including the use of extensive scatterometer time series to determine seasonal and interannual variability and possible relationships to climate change. Under a NASA Earth Science Enterprise grant, the Scatterometer Climate Record Pathfinder (SCP) project has produced non-ocean scatterometer imagery and data products that are now publicly available for the first time (http://www.scp.byu.edu/).

Evaluation Of Operational Ssm/I Ice-Concentration Algorithms, Walter Meier, Michael Van Woert, Cheryl Bertoia

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The United States National Ice Center (NIC) provides weekly ice analyses of the Arctic and Antarctic using information from ice reconnaissance, ship reports and high-resolution satellite imagery. In cloud-covered areas and regions lacking imagery, the higher-resolution sources are augmented by ice concentrations derived from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSMII) passive-microwave imagery. However, the SSMII-derived ice concentrations are limited by low resolution and uncertainties in thin-ice regions. Ongoing research at NIC is attempting to improve the utility of these SSMII products for operational sea-ice analyses. The refinements of operational algorithms may also aid future scientific studies. Here …

First Finding Of The Amphipod Echinogammarus Ischnus And The Mussel Dreissena Bugensis In Lake Michigan, Thomas F. Nalepa, Don W. Schloesser, Steve A. Pothoven, Darryl W. Hondorp, David L. Fanslow, Marc L. Tuchman, Guy W. Fleischer Jan 2001

First Finding Of The Amphipod Echinogammarus Ischnus And The Mussel Dreissena Bugensis In Lake Michigan, Thomas F. Nalepa, Don W. Schloesser, Steve A. Pothoven, Darryl W. Hondorp, David L. Fanslow, Marc L. Tuchman, Guy W. Fleischer

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The first finding of the amphipod Echinogammarus ischnus and the mussel Dreissena bugensis in Lake Michigan is documented. These two species are widespread and abundant in the lower lakes, but had not yet been reported from Lake Michigan. E. ischnus is generally considered a warmwater form that is typically associated with hard substrates and Dreissena clusters in the nearshore zone. Along the eastern shoreline of Lake Michigan, this species was present at rocky, breakwall habitats along the entire north-south axis of the lake. Although not abundant, this species was also found at soft-bottomed sites as deep as 94 m in …

Comparison Of Interannual Snowmelt-Onset Dates With Atmospheric Conditions, Sheldon D. Drobot, Mark R. Anderson Jan 2001

Comparison Of Interannual Snowmelt-Onset Dates With Atmospheric Conditions, Sheldon D. Drobot, Mark R. Anderson

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The snowmelt-onset date represents an important transitional point in the Arctic surface energy balance, when albedo decreases and energy absorption increases rapidly in response to the appearance of liquid water. Interannual variations in snowmelt onset are likely related to large-scale variations in atmospheric circulation, such as described by the Arctic Oscillation (AO). This research therefore examines the relationship between monthly-averaged AO values and mean annual snowmelt-onset dates over Arctic sea ice in 13 regions, from 1979 to 1998. The objective is to statistically relate variations in mean annual regional snowmelt-onset dates to variations in the AO. Additionally, monthly-averaged 500 hPa …

Recent Declines In Benthic Macroinvertebrate Densities In Lake Ontario, Stephen J. Lozano, Jill V. Scharold, Thomas F. Nalepa Jan 2001

Recent Declines In Benthic Macroinvertebrate Densities In Lake Ontario, Stephen J. Lozano, Jill V. Scharold, Thomas F. Nalepa

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Surveys of benthic macroinvertebrates conducted in Lake Ontario during 1994 and 1997 revealed recent declines in populations of three major taxonomic groups: Oligochaeta, Sphaeriidae, and Diporeia spp. (Amphipoda), with the most drastic reductions occurring in the latter. Results from sediment measurements were used to classify deepwater sediments into three habitat zones. Densities of all three taxa declined in the shallowest (12–88 m) of the sediment zones between 1994 and 1997; the greatest changes in density were observed for Diporeia, which declined from 3011 to 145 individuals·m–2, and for total benthic macroinvertebrates, which declined from 5831 to 1376 …

Cetacean Sightings Around The Republic Of The Maldives, April 1998, Lisa T. Ballance, R. Charles Anderson, Robert L. Pitman, Kathleen Stafford, Abdullah Shaan, Zaha Waheed, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

In April 1998, as part of a project to collect biopsy samples of putative pygmy blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus brevicauda) in the waters around the Republic of the Maldives, Indian Ocean, incidental sightings of cetaceans encountered were recorded. Using modified line-transect methods and handheld binoculars, a total of 267 sightings of 16 species of whales and dolphins were recorded during 20 at-sea days in the northeastern part of the atoll. Significant results include the following: (1) cetaceans were abundant and species diversity was high, including nearly every pantropical species of pelagic cetacean; (2) the spinner dolphin (Stenella …

Basicranial Anatomy Of The Living Linsangs Prionodon And Poiana (Mammalia, Carnivora, Viverridae), With Comments On The Early Evolution Of Aeluroid Carnivorans, Robert M. Hunt Jr. Jan 2001

Basicranial Anatomy Of The Living Linsangs Prionodon And Poiana (Mammalia, Carnivora, Viverridae), With Comments On The Early Evolution Of Aeluroid Carnivorans, Robert M. Hunt Jr.

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The living Asian linsang, Prionodon pardicolor, shares marked anatomical similarities in basicranium and dentition with the extinct Oligocene aeluroid, Palaeoprionodon lamandini, from the Quercy fissures, France. The living African linsang, Poiana richardsoni, is similar yet slightly more derived in basicranial traits relative to Prionodon pardicolor, and also has basicranial and dental features indicating a relationship to the living genets (Genetta). The basicranial and auditory anatomy of a series Palaeoprionodon-Prionodon-Poiana can be interpreted as a morphocline showing the progressive alteration of the form of the petrosal and auditory bulla from the plesiomorphic aeluroid state in …

Efficient Traitor Tracing Algorithms Using List Decoding, Alice Silverberg, Jessica Staddon, Judy L. Walker Jan 2001

Efficient Traitor Tracing Algorithms Using List Decoding, Alice Silverberg, Jessica Staddon, Judy L. Walker

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We use powerful new techniques for list decoding error-correcting codes to efficiently trace traitors. Although much work has focused on constructing traceability schemes, the complexity of the tracing algorithm has received little attention. Because the TA tracing algorithm has a runtime of O(N) in general, where N is the number of users, it is inefficient for large populations. We produce schemes for which the TA algorithm is very fast. The IPP tracing algorithm, though less efficient, can list all coalitions capable of constructing a given pirate. We give evidence that when using an algebraic structure, the ability to …

Reconstructing Basin-Scale Eulerian Velocity Fields From Simulated Drifter Data, M. Toner, A. C. Poje, A. D. Kirwan, C. K. R. T. Jones, B. L. Lipphardt, C. E. Grosch Jan 2001

Reconstructing Basin-Scale Eulerian Velocity Fields From Simulated Drifter Data, M. Toner, A. C. Poje, A. D. Kirwan, C. K. R. T. Jones, B. L. Lipphardt, C. E. Grosch

CCPO Publications

A single-layer, reduced-gravity, double-gyre primitive equation model in a 2000 km x 2000 km square domain is used to test the accuracy and sensitivity of time-dependent Eulerian velocity fields reconstructed from numerically generated drifter trajectories and climatology. The goal is to determine how much Lagrangian data is needed to capture the Eulerian velocity field within a specified accuracy. The Eulerian fields are found by projecting, on an analytic set of divergence-free basis functions, drifter data launched in the active western half of the basin supplemented by climatology in the eastern domain. The time-dependent coefficients are evaluated by least squares minimization …

Future Marine Zooplankton Research- A Perspective, Marine Zooplankton Colloquim 2, Eileen E. Hofmann, John M. Klinck

CCPO Publications

During the Second Marine Zooplankton Colloquium (MZC2) 3 issues were added to those developed 11 yr ago during the First Marine Zooplankton Colloquium (MZC1). First, we focused on hot spots, i.e., locations where zooplankton occur in higher than regular abundance and/or operate at higher rates. We should be able to determine the processes leading to such aggregations and rates, and quantify their persistence. Second, information on the level of individual species, even of highly abundant ones, is limited. Concerted efforts should be undertaken with highly abundant to dominant species or genera (e.g., Oithona spp., Calanus spp., Oikopleura spp., Euphausia superba …

Observations Of Intratidal Variability Of Flows Over A Sill/Contraction Combination In A Chilean Fjord, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson, Fernando Jara, Carlos Molinet, Doris Soto Jan 2001

Observations Of Intratidal Variability Of Flows Over A Sill/Contraction Combination In A Chilean Fjord, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson, Fernando Jara, Carlos Molinet, Doris Soto

CCPO Publications

Underway velocity measurements were carried out for the first time in a Chilean fjord using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter with the purpose of elucidating the intratidal variability of flows through a pass, Paso Galvarino. The pass included a sill, where the bottom sloped by roughly 30%, and a coastline contraction of -90%. The relatively small dimensions of the pass allowed for rapid sampling of the flow evolution throughout the tidal cycle. The backscattered sound signal from the velocimeter and from an echo sounder were used to describe the vertical excursions of the pycnocline throughout the domain and to identify regions …

Wind And Gulf Stream Influences On Along-Shelf Transport And Off-Shelf Export At Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, Dana K. Savidge, John M. Bane Jr. Jan 2001

Wind And Gulf Stream Influences On Along-Shelf Transport And Off-Shelf Export At Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, Dana K. Savidge, John M. Bane Jr.

CCPO Publications

Along-shelf transports across three cross-shelf lines on the continental shelf near Cape Hatteras have been calculated from moored current meter data over a continuous 24 month period in 1992-1994. The along-shelf convergence has been used to infer off-shelf export. Transport and transport convergence have been related to wind and Gulf Stream forcing and to variability in sea level at the coast. The along-shelf transport variability is primarily wind-driven and highly correlated with sea level fluctuations at the coast. Both winds and along-shelf transport exhibit a near-annual period variability. Along shelf transport is not well correlated with Gulf Stream offshore position. …
