Autoionization Resonances In The Simultaneous Excitation-Ionization Of Helium, Mevlut Dogan, Albert Crowe Jan 2001

Autoionization Resonances In The Simultaneous Excitation-Ionization Of Helium, Mevlut Dogan, Albert Crowe

Turkish Journal of Physics

The effect of autoionizing states on excitation-ionization processes has been investigated experimentally by observation of the electron impact ionization process leading to He^{ + }(2p) with the excitation energy region in helium corresponding to doubly excitated states above the second ionization threshold. Also, the process arising from the decay of the doubly excited `parity unfavoured' (2p^{2})^{3}P state of helium, is studied.

The Langmuir Properties Of A Mixed Copolysiloxane Monolayer, Rifat Çapan, Tim H. Richardson, David Lacey Jan 2001

The Langmuir Properties Of A Mixed Copolysiloxane Monolayer, Rifat Çapan, Tim H. Richardson, David Lacey

Turkish Journal of Physics

A family of linear copolysiloxanes [1-3] substituted with side chains containing carboxylic head groups has been synthesised. The Langmuir properties of the mixed monolayer at the water-air interface has been studied using a single layer Langmuir trough. The area per molecule for the mixed monolayer is calculated theoretically and experimentally. This study has not only shown that there is an excellent agreement between theoretical and experimental values, but has also shown that this mixed monolayer at the water-air interface can be transferred as a monolayer onto a solid substrate.

Turkish Journal of Physics

The magnetic properties of Cu_{1 - x}Co_{x} alloy films prepared by electrodeposition technique were investigated by Alternating Gradient Force Magnetometer. The magnetization curves of Cu_{0.94}Co_{0.06}, Cu_{0.87}Co_{0.13} and Cu_{0.74}Co_{0.26} films were easily saturated while the other Cu_{1 - x}Co_{x} samples with x= 0.17, 0.19 and 0.21 had more inclined magnetization curves. The saturation magnetization value of Cu_{1 - x}Co_{x} film increased with increasing Co content in the film. The minimum values of the ratio of remanence to magnetization and the coercive field were determined in the Cu_{0.81}Co_{0.19} alloy film among the others. The ferromagnetic order in the Cu_{1 - x}Co_{x} films …

Production And Structure Of Rapidly Solidified Al-Si Alloys, Orhan Uzun, Tuncay Karaaslan, Mustafa Keski̇n

Turkish Journal of Physics

Al-Si alloys with compositions 8, 12, 16wt% Si were manufactured by chill casting and melt-spinning (MS) methods. The resulting ribbon samples have been characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry and compared with their ingot counterparts. Microstructural examinations revealed that microstructures of the melt-spun ribbons were quite fine compared to their ingot counterparts. Both XRD analyses and microstructural examinations indicated that the solubility of Si in \alpha -Al phase was nearly complete.

Lattice Changes In Shape Memory Cuznal Alloys On Aging At Room Temperature, Seyfetti̇n Çakmak, Ekrem Artunç, Nejdet Kayali, Osman Adigüzel

Turkish Journal of Physics

The aging behavior of CuZnAl martensites (Cu-21.62 wt.% Zn-5.68 wt.% Al and Cu-24.98 wt.% Zn-4.43 wt.% Al) at about 297 K was studied by analyzing diffraction line profiles obtained by X-ray diffractometry. For the alloys, the change of the lattice parameters and the tetragonality associated with the aging time at room temperature were investigated. The habit planes versus the aging time at room temperature were calculated using the De Vos-Aernoundt-Delaey model, based on the crystallographic theory of Wechsler-Lieberman-Read(WLR), and from the DO_{3}\rightarrow 18R martensite transformation theory.

Turkish Journal of Physics

A Bi_{1.6}Pb_{0.4}Sr_{2}Ca_{3}Cu_{4}O_{12} compound was produced by melt-casting method. The microstructure of the sample was studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy. Phase analysis was carried out by X-ray diffraction patterns and EDAX. The electrical resistance exhibites the existance of a superconducting phase with an onset temperature T_{c} at 110 K along with a minor phase with an onset T_{c} at 80 K. It has been found that the superconducting phase temperature T_{c} increases with increasing sintering temperature.

Spatial And Temporal Variability In Snowmelt Onset Over Arctic Sea Ice, Mark R. Anderson, Sheldon D. Drobot Jan 2001

Spatial And Temporal Variability In Snowmelt Onset Over Arctic Sea Ice, Mark R. Anderson, Sheldon D. Drobot

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Climate models suggest surface warming in the Arctic will be rapid and pronounced, implying substantial changes in snowmelt onset are likely. This research therefore examines spatial and temporal variability in passive-microwave derived snowmelt-onset dates over Arctic sea ice. The objectives are to understand better the regional characteristics of snowmelt and to document whether the snowmelt-onset record shows signs of climate change. Snowmelt-onset dates are derived with Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer and Special Sensor Microwave/Imager brightness-temperature data, and they are subsequently stratified into 13 regions to analyze spatial and temporal variability. Results illustrate significant spatial variability in snowmelt onset, with the …

Vertical Profiles Of Streambed Hydraulic Conductivity Determined Using Slug Tests In Central And Western Nebraska, David L. Rus, Virginia L. Mcguire, Brian R. Zurbuchen, Vitaly A. Zlotnik Jan 2001

Vertical Profiles Of Streambed Hydraulic Conductivity Determined Using Slug Tests In Central And Western Nebraska, David L. Rus, Virginia L. Mcguire, Brian R. Zurbuchen, Vitaly A. Zlotnik

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Many issues of water-resources management rely on modeling of ground-water/surface-water interactions, and streambed hydraulic conductivity is a key parameter controlling the water fluxes across the stream/aquifer interface. However, in central and western Nebraska, this parameter is generally undefined. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Nebraska Platte River Cooperative Hydrology Study Group, performed slug tests at 15 steam sites in the Platte, Republican, and Little Blue River watersheds to determine the hydraulic conductivity of streambeds in central and western Nebraska. Slug tests were completed at several discrete depth intevals using pneumatic or mechanical methods, and the water-level response was …

Early Oligocene Siliceous Microfossil Biostratigraphy Of Cape Roberts Project Core Crp-3, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, David M. Harwood, S. M. Bohaty Jan 2001

Early Oligocene Siliceous Microfossil Biostratigraphy Of Cape Roberts Project Core Crp-3, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, David M. Harwood, S. M. Bohaty

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Early Oligocene siliceous microfossils were recovered in the upper c. 193 m of the CRP-3 drillcore. Although abundance and preservation are highly variable through this section, approximately 130 siliceous microfossil taxa were identified, including diatoms, silicoflagellates, ebridians, chrysophycean cysts, and endoskeletal dinoflagellates. Well-preserved and abundant assemblages characterize samples in the upper c. 70 m and indicate deposition in a coastal setting with water depths between 50 and 200 m. Abundance fluctuations over narrow intervals in the upper c. 70 mbsf are interpreted to reflect environmental changes that were either conducive or deleterious to growth and preservation of siliceous microfossils. Only …

Chronostratigraphy Of The Crp-3 Drillhole, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, M. J. Hannah, F. Florindo, David M. Harwood, Christopher R. Fielding, Cape Roberts Science Team

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

An 823 m thick glaciomarine Cenozoic section sitting unconformably on the Lower Devonian Beacon Supergroup was recovered in CRP –3. This paper reviews the chronostratigraphical constraints for the Cenozoic section. Between 3 and 480.27 mbsf 23 unconformity bounded cycles of sediment were recorded. Each unconformity is thought to represent a hiatus of uncertain duration. Four magnetozones have been recognised from the Cenozoic section. The record is complex with several “tiny wiggles” recorded throughout. Biostratigraphical or Sr ages, which could be used to link these magnetozones to the magnetic polarity time scale are restricted to the upper 190 m of sediment. …

Sedimentary Cyclicity In Crp Drillcore, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, T. R. Naish, P. J. Barrett, G. B. Dunbar, K. J. Woolfe, A. G. Dunn, S. A. Henrys, M. Claps, R. D. Powell, Christopher R. Fielding

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The upper 1200 m of pre-Pliocene sediment recovered by Cape Roberts Project (CRP) drilling off the Victoria Land coast of Antarctica between 1997-1999 has been subdivided into 54 unconformity-bound stratigraphic sequences, spanning the period c. 32 to 17 Ma. The sequences are recognised on the basis of the cyclical vertical stacking of their constituent lithofacies, which are enclosed by erosion surfaces produced during the grounding of the advancing ice margin onto the sea floor. Each sequence represents deposition in a range of offshore shelf to coastal glacimarine sedimentary environments during oscillations in the ice margin across the Western Ross Sea …

Educating Professional Software Engineers: Pathways And Progress In The Australian Experience, Rick Duley, David Veal, Stanislaw P. Maj

Research outputs pre 2011

Australia has seized the international initiative in the recognition of software engineers as professionals. Of the 37 universities in Australia offering undergraduate courses in computing, eleven offer courses in software engineering which are accredited by the Institute of Engineers, Australia (IEAust) and which may lead the graduate to membership of the Institute. In this way, the Institute has plausible claim to being the first national professional engineering body in the world to have accredited four-year undergraduate software engineering degrees as professional qualifications. The paper traces the development of the relationship between the Institute of Engineers and the computing industry and …

Dres: Internet Resource Management Using Deferred Reservations, Samphel Norden Jan 2001

Dres: Internet Resource Management Using Deferred Reservations, Samphel Norden

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In this proposal, we consider the problem of resource reservation for Integrated Services (IntServ) and Differentiated Services (DiffServ) networks. Current approaches for resource reservation in INtegrated Service Networks adopt an all-or-nothing approach, where partially acquired resources must be released if resources are not available at all routers on the chosen path. Furthermore, under high load, end-systems must retry requests repeatedly leading to inefficient allocation and increased traffic. We propose a new approach called Deferred REServation (DERS) that substantially improves performance (reduces the overall cell rejection probability and increases link utilization) over the all-or-nothing reservation approach. Call admissibility is increased by …

Fast Incremental Crc Updates For Ip Over Atm Networks, Florian Braun, Marcel Waldvogel Jan 2001

Fast Incremental Crc Updates For Ip Over Atm Networks, Florian Braun, Marcel Waldvogel

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In response to the increasing network speeds, many operations in IP routers and similar devices are being made more efficient. With the advances in other areas of packet processing, the verification and regeneration of cyclic redundancy check (CRC) codes of the data link layer is likely to become a bottleneck in the near future. In this paper, we present a mechanism to defer CRC verification without compromising reliability. This opens the possibility of incremental updates of the CRC. We introduce a new high-speed technique and present efficient implementation, speeding up CRC processing by a factor of 15. Although the paper …

A Distributed Annotation System, Robin Dowell Jan 2001

A Distributed Annotation System, Robin Dowell

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

One goal of any genome project is the elucidation of hte primary sequence of DNA contained within a given species. While the availability ot the primary sequence itself is valuable, it does not reach its full potential until i has been annotated. Generally defined, annotation is descriptive information or commentary added to text, in this case genomic sequence. Without a mechanism for collecting, recording, and disseminating community-based annotation, a valuable source of information is severely diminshed. In this report I outline the design and implementation of a Distributed Annotation System (DAS). DAS allowes sequence annotations to be decentralized among multiple …

Layered Protocol Wrappers For Internet Packet Processing In Reconfigurable Hardware, Florian Braun, John Lockwood, Marcel Waldvogel Jan 2001

Layered Protocol Wrappers For Internet Packet Processing In Reconfigurable Hardware, Florian Braun, John Lockwood, Marcel Waldvogel

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The ongoing increases of line speed in the Internet backbone combined with the need for increased functionality of network devices presents a major challenge. These demands call for the use of reprogrammable hardware to provide the required flexible, high-speed functionality, at all network layers. The Field Programmable Port Extender (FPX) provides such an environment for development of networking components in reprogrammable hardware. We present a framework to streamline and simplify networking applications that process ATM cells, AAL5 frames, Internet Protocol (IP) packets and UDP datagrams directly in hardware.

Implementation Of An Open Multi-Service Router, Fred Kuhns, John Dehart, Ralph Keller, John Lockwood, Prashanth Papu, Jyoti Parwatikar, Ed Spitznagel, David Richard, David Taylor, Jon Turner, Ken Wong

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper describes the design, implementation, and performance of an open, high-performance, dynamically reconfigurable Multi-Service Router (MSR) being developed at Washington University in St. Louis. This router provides an experimentation platform for research on protocols, router software, and hardware design, network management, quality of service and advanced applications. The MSR has been designed to be flexible, without sacrificing performance. It support gigabit links and uses a scalable architecture suitable for supporting hundreds or even thousands of links. The MSR's flexibility makes it an ideal platform for experimental research on dynamically extensible networks that implement higher level functions in direct support …

Routing In Overlay Multicast Networks, Sherlia Y. Shi, Jonathan S. Turner Jan 2001

Routing In Overlay Multicast Networks, Sherlia Y. Shi, Jonathan S. Turner

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Multicast servises can be provided either as a basic network service or as an application-layer service. Higher level multicast implementations often provide more sophisticated features, and since they don't require network supoprt for multicast, they can provide multicast services, where no network layer support is available. Overlay multicast networks offer an intermediate option, potentially combining the flexibility and advanced features of application layer multicast with the greater efficiency of network layer multicast. Overlay multicast networks play an important role in the Internet. Indeed, since Internet Service Providers have been slow to enable IP multicast in their networks, Internet multicast is …

A Termination Detection Protocol For Use In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Jamie Payton Jan 2001

A Termination Detection Protocol For Use In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Jamie Payton

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

As computing devices become smaller and wireless networking technologies improve, the popularity of mobile computing continues to rise. In today's business world, many consider devices such as cell phones, PDAs, and laptops as essential tools. As these and other devices become increasingly independent of the wired infrastructure, new kinds of applications that assume an ad hoc network infrastructure will need to be deployed. Such a setting poses new challenges for the software developer, e.g., the lack of an established network topology, bandwidth limitations, and frequent disconnections. In this paper, we begin to explore design strategies for developing applications over ad …

Relying On Safe Distance To Ensure Consistent Group Membership In Ad Hoc Networks, Qingfeng Huang, Christine Julien, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Ali Hazemi Jan 2001

Relying On Safe Distance To Ensure Consistent Group Membership In Ad Hoc Networks, Qingfeng Huang, Christine Julien, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Ali Hazemi

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The design of ad hoc mobile applications often requires the availability of a consistent view of the application state among the participating hosts. Such views are important because they simplify both the programming and verification tasks. Essential to constructing a consitent view is the ability to know what hosts are within proximity of each other, i.e., form a group in support of the particular application. In this paper we propose a protocol that allows hosts within communication range to maintain a consistent view of the group membership despite movement and frequent disconnections. The novel features of this protocol are its …

Scheduling Processing Resources In Programmable Routers, Prashanth Pappu, Tilman Wolf Jan 2001

Scheduling Processing Resources In Programmable Routers, Prashanth Pappu, Tilman Wolf

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

To provide flexibility in deploying new protocols and services, general-purpose processing engines are being placed in the datapath of routers. Such network processors are typically simple RISC multiprocessors that perform forwarding and custom application processing of packets. The inherent unpredictability of execution time of arbitrary instruction code poses a significant challenge in providing QoS guarantees for data flows that compete for such processing resources in the network. However, we show that network processing workloads are highly regular and predictable. Using estimates of execution times of various applications on packets of given lengths, we provide a method for admission control and …

Design Of Wavelength Converting Switches For Optical Burst Switching, Jeyashankher Ramamirtham, Jonathan Turner Jan 2001

Design Of Wavelength Converting Switches For Optical Burst Switching, Jeyashankher Ramamirtham, Jonathan Turner

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is an experimental network technology that enables the construction of very high capacity routers, using optical data paths and electronic control. In this paper, we study two designs for wavelength converting switches that are suitable for use in optical burst switching systems and evaluate their performance. Both designs use tunable lasers to implement wavelength conversion. One is strictly nonblocking design, that also requires optical crossbars. The second substitutes Wavelength Grating Routers (WGR) for the optical crossbars, reducing cost, but introducing some potential for blocking. We show how the routing problem for the WGR-based switches can be …

Evaluation Of Motion-Jpeg2000 For Video Processing, Wei Yu, Ruibiao Qiu, Jason Fritts Jan 2001

Evaluation Of Motion-Jpeg2000 For Video Processing, Wei Yu, Ruibiao Qiu, Jason Fritts

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The new ISO/ITU-T standard for still image coding, JPEG2000, has been shown to provide superior coding efficiency to the previous standard, JPEG. Because of the superb performance of JPEG2000, it is reasonable to argue that Motion-JPEG2000, the corresponding moving picture coding standard of JPEG2000, has equally outstanding performance. However, there has not been a sufficient performance evaluation of Motion-JPEG2000. To this end, we have studied the potential of Motion-JPEG2000 for video processing. Our experiments show that Motion-JPEG2000 provides high compression performance, strong error resilience, and good perceptual image quality. Together with a rich set of features inherited from JPEG2000, Motion-JPEG2000 …

Ant–Seed Mutualisms: Can Red Imported Fire Ants Sour The Relationship?, Jennifer A. Zettler, Timothy P. Spira, Craig R. Allen

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Invasion by the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, has had negative impacts on individual animal and plant species, but little is known about how S. invicta affects complex mutualistic relationships. In some eastern forests of North America, 30% of herbaceous species have ant-dispersed seeds. We conducted experiments to determine if fire ants are attracted to seeds of these plant species and assessed the amount of scarification or damage that results from handling by fire ants. Fire ants removed nearly 100% of seeds of the ant-dispersed plants Trillium undulatum, T. discolor, T. catesbaei, Viola rotundifolia, and Sanguinaria canadensis. …

Modeling Viable Mammal Populations In Gap Analyses, Craig R. Allen, L. G. Pearlstine Jan 2001

Modeling Viable Mammal Populations In Gap Analyses, Craig R. Allen, L. G. Pearlstine

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Gap analysis is an approach to conserving biological diversity that maps species richness and identifies sites that ought to be protected but are not in conservation networks. Gap analyses based on species richness may have high error rates when species models are based solely on species-habitat association, because patches too small to support populations are still considered to be potential habitat. We incorporated information on the home range and dispersal distances of the mammals of Florida to estimate minimum critical areas (MCA) to support minimum viable populations for each mammal species. Incorporating MCA decreases the area occupied by the highest …

Potential Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Impact On The Endangered Schaus Swallowtail (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), Elizabeth A. Forys, Anna Quistorff, Craig R. Allen Jan 2001

Potential Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Impact On The Endangered Schaus Swallowtail (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), Elizabeth A. Forys, Anna Quistorff, Craig R. Allen

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

The Schaus swallowtail, Papilio aristodemus ponceanus, historically occurred in tropical hardwood hammocks from South Miami to the upper Florida Keys and is currently listed as federally endangered. Much of the remaining hardwood hammock habitat is fragmented by roads and human development that may alter the microhabitat within the hammocks and increase the probability of invasion by non-native predators and competitors. One non-indigenous species that has recently invaded the Florida Keys, and that may impact the Schaus swallowtail is the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren). We estimated abundance of red imported fire ants in Schaus swallowtail habitat …
