Origin Of Late Quaternary Dune Fields On The Southern High Plains Of Texas And New Mexico, Daniel R. Muhs, Vance T. Holliday
Origin Of Late Quaternary Dune Fields On The Southern High Plains Of Texas And New Mexico, Daniel R. Muhs, Vance T. Holliday
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Mostly stabilized late Holocene eolian sands on the Southern High Plains of the United States were studied to determine their origins and to assess whether present dune stability depends more strongly on sediment supply, sediment availability, or transport limitations. Geomorphic, sedimentological, and geochemical trends indicate that late Holocene dunes formed under westerly paleowinds, broadly similar to those of today. Mineralogical and geochemical data indicate that the most likely source for the sands is not the Pecos River valley, but the Pleistocene Blackwater Draw Formation, an older, extensive eolian deposit in the region. These observations suggest that new sand is supplied …
Central Us Earthquake Catalog For Hazard Maps Of Memphis, Tennessee, Russell L. Wheeler, Charles S. Mueller
Central Us Earthquake Catalog For Hazard Maps Of Memphis, Tennessee, Russell L. Wheeler, Charles S. Mueller
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
An updated version of the catalog that was used for the current national probabilistic seismic-hazard maps would suffice for preduction of large-scale hazard maps of the Memphis urban area. Deaggregation maps provide guidance as to the area that a catalog for calculating Memphis hazard should cover. For the future, the Nuttli and local netword catalogs could be examined for earthquakes nor presenly included in the cataloge. Additional work on the aftershock removal might reduce hazard uncertainty. Graphs of decadal and annual earthquake rates suggest completeness at and above magnitude 3 for the last three or four decades. Any additional work …
Performance Of Deferred Reservations In Data Networks, Samphel Norden, Jonathan Turner
Performance Of Deferred Reservations In Data Networks, Samphel Norden, Jonathan Turner
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
This paper studies the performance of deferred resource reservation in data networks. Conventional resource reservation protocols, such as PNNI and RSVP adopt an all-or-nothing approach, where partially acquired resources must be released if resources are not available at all links on the chosen path. During periods of high network load, this leads users to retry requests repeatedly, adding control traffic at exactly the time when the network's capacity to process that control traffic is exhausted. Deferred REServation (DRES) can significantly improve performance by reducing the overall call rejection probability, allowing more traffic to be carried, using the same resources. Call …
Legends As A Device For Interacting With Visualizations, Mihail E. Tudoreanu, Eileen Kraemer
Legends As A Device For Interacting With Visualizations, Mihail E. Tudoreanu, Eileen Kraemer
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Users and developers of visualization tools must deal with the problem of specifying what information to show and how to represent it. Typically, the user's focus of interest will change over time, and the specifications must change with the user's interests. Techniques for the simple, direct, and intuitive creation and refinement of these specifications can be useful. In this paper we show how legends, a natural element of graphical displays, may be used as a direct and unobstrusive interaction device through which users may interactively specify new visualizations and animations.
Services Provision In Ad Hoc Networks, Radu Handorean, Gruia-Catalin Roman
Services Provision In Ad Hoc Networks, Radu Handorean, Gruia-Catalin Roman
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
The client-server model continues to dominate distributed computing with increasingly more flexible variants being deployed. Many are centered on the notion of discovering services at run time and on allowing any system component to act as a service provider. The result is a growing reliance on the service registration and discovery mechanisms. This paper addresses the issue of facilitating such service provision capabilities in the presence of (logical and physical) mobility exhibited by applications executing over ad hoc networks. The solution being discussed entailes a new kind of service model, which we were able to build as an adaption layer …

Human-Induced Stresses On Mangrove Swamps Along The Kenyan Coast, P. A. O. Abuodha, J. G. Kairo
Human-Induced Stresses On Mangrove Swamps Along The Kenyan Coast, P. A. O. Abuodha, J. G. Kairo
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Mangroves form important ecosystems in Kenya's coastal areas. They produce goods and services that are of environmental, ecological and economic importance to human society. However, mangroves are under continuing pressure from anthropogenic disturbances. A particular concern has been the clearing of mangrove areas to reclaim land for other uses such as aquaculture, salt manufacture, agriculture and housing. About 10 000 ha of mangrove areas have been cleared for salt manufacture between Ngomeni and Karawa, while in Lamu, close to 100 ha of mangrove forest was killed by dredged-up sediment that was deposited during the construction of the Mokowe sea jet. …

King William County Shoreline Situation Report, Marcia Berman, Harry Berquist, Sharon Dewing, J. B. Glover, Carl Hershner, Tamia Rudnicky, Daniel E. Schatt, Kevin Skunda
Reports
The data inventory developed for the Shoreline Situation Reports are based on a three-tiered shoreline assessment approach. This assessment characterizes conditions in the shorezone observed from a small boat moving along the shoreline. Handheld GPS units record data observations in the field. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach divides the shorezone into three regions:
-
the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use
-
the bank, evaluated for height, stability and natural protection
-
the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes.
Three GIS coverages are generated from the collection technique. The KW_lubc coverage are features related …

With the result that the titled investigation: Efficiency of the Inorganic Fertilization in the Alfalfa Cultivation (Medicago sativa L) and Liming for the Correction of the …
Late Maritime Woodland (Ceramic) And Paleoindian End Scrapers: Stone Tool Technology, Pamela J. Dickinson
Late Maritime Woodland (Ceramic) And Paleoindian End Scrapers: Stone Tool Technology, Pamela J. Dickinson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Archaeologists tend to view lithic assemblages from a predominately morphological perspective, stressing the importance of the fluted point as the defining characteristic of the Paleoindian culture period (ca. 10,000 years B.P.). In applying such a characteristic, Paleoindian sites have been identified throughout the Northeast. However, there are no identified Paleoindian sites in New Brunswick. It is possible that some sites are largely ignored or thought to lack a Paleoindian component if a fluted point is absent. If such sites are being overlooked, then the database may under represent the Paleoindian culture period. Spurred end scrapers commonly occur in known Paleoindian …
Inhibition Of Erythrocyte Δ- Aminolevulinic Acid Dehydratase (Alad) Activity In Fish From Waters Affects By Lead Smelters, Christopher J. Schmitt, Colleen A. Caldwell, Bill Olsen, Dave Serdar
Inhibition Of Erythrocyte Δ- Aminolevulinic Acid Dehydratase (Alad) Activity In Fish From Waters Affects By Lead Smelters, Christopher J. Schmitt, Colleen A. Caldwell, Bill Olsen, Dave Serdar
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
We assessed the effects on fish of lead (Pb) released to streams by smelters located in Trail, BC (Canada), E. Helena, MT, Herculaneum, MO, and Glover, MO. Fish were collected by electrofishing from sites located downstream of smelters and from reference sites. Blood from each fish was analyzed for δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity and hemoglobin (Hb), and samples of blood, liver, or carcass were analyzed for Pb, zinc (Zn), or both. Fish collected downstream of all four smelters sites had elevated Pb concentrations, decreased ALAD activity, or both relative to their respective reference sites. At E. Helena, fish from …

Occurrence And Potential Adverse Effects Of Semivolatile Organic Compounds In Streambed Sediment, United States, 1992–1995, Thomas J. Lopes, Edward T. Furlong
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The occurrence and potential adverse effects of select semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in streambed sediment were assessed at 536 sites in 20 major river basins across the United States from 1992 to 1995. Fifty-six SVOCs were detected at one or more sites, and one or more SVOCs were detected at 71% of sites. The northeastern and Great Lakes regions and large metropolitan areas have the highest SVOC concentrations. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were detected most frequently and at the highest concentrations. Concentrations of PAHs and phthalates were about 10 times higher at sites influenced by urban activities than at sites …

Order-Disorder Phase Transitions In Kno2 , Csno2, And Tlno2 Crystals: A Molecular Dynamics Study, Chun-Gang Duan, Wai-Ning Mei, Robert W. Smith, Jianjun Liu, M. M. Ossowski, John R. Hardy
Physics Faculty Publications
The order-disorder phase transitions of KNO2 , CsNO2, and TlNO2 have been studied using parameter-free molecular dynamics simulation. It is found that the phase transitions in nitrites investigated are driven by the rotations of the NO2 2 ions about different axes together with displacements of cations and anions. We successfully reproduce the high-temperature phases of these nitrites, i.e., the NaCl-like structure for KNO2 and CsCl-like structure for Cs(Tl)NO2. Based on the investigation of the radial distribution function of the cations and anions, we explain why KNO2 and Cs(Tl)NO2 form quite different low-temperature phases.
La Révolution Scientifique, Les Révolutions, Et L'Histoire Des Sciences. Comment Ernest Coumet Nous A Libérés De L'Héritage D'Alexandre Koyré, Marco Panza
MPP Published Research

Life History Of The River Shiner, Notropis Blennius (Cyprinidae), In The Arkansas River Of Western Arkansas, Laura Hudson, Thomas M. Buchanan
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The reproductive cycle, food habits, and age and growth of the river shiner, Notropis blennius (Girard), in the Arkansas River of western Arkansas were studied from May 1996 through October 1997. Based on gonadosomatic indices and mean ovumd iameters of females, tubercle development in males, and the first appearance of young-of-year in samples, the breeding season extended from June through August in both 1996 and 1997. The river shiner is a diurnal, generalist feeder that forages on a wide variety of food items. In all four seasons, detritus dominated the diets of adults and juveniles in terms of volume and …

Measurements of peroxycarboxylic nitric anhydrides (PANs) made in Houston, Texas during TexAQS (Texas Air Quality Study) 2000 showed a relatively abundant PAN compound that had not been identified in previous studies in North America [cf. Williams et al., 2000]. This compound was hypothesized to be peroxyacrylic nitric anhydride { CH2=CHC(O)OONO2, APAN} based on the work of Tanimoto and Akimoto, [2001]. APAN was synthesized and characterized on one of the two GC systems used to make those measurements, subsequent to the TexAQS 2000 field study, confirming that APAN was observed during TexAQS 2000, both on the ground and in airborne measurements. …

The cross section and the proton structure function F2 for neutral current deep inelastic e+p scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 30 pb-1. The data were collected in 1996 and 1997 at a centre-of-mass energy of 300 GeV. They cover the kinematic range 2.7 < Q2 < 30000 GeV2 and 6-10-5 < cursive Greek chi < 0.65. The variation of F2 with cursive Greek chi and Q2 is well described by next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD as implemented in the DGLAP evolution equations.

In this paper we describe e-SpatialTM technology, comprising an innovative software solution for deploying integrated web-based spatial applications within Oracle 9i Database environments. The two main components of the solution are the iSMARTTM database development technology and the i-SpatialTM Information Server (iSIS). This technology allows Oracle users to build and deploy both spatially enabled and standard Internet applications without requiring any application-specific GIS source code. It can be deployed on any Oracle supported hardware platform and on any device running a Java Virtual Machine, thus providing full support for wireless, PDAs and other mobile devices. In particular, we describe a …

Can Long-Term Variability In The Gulf Stream Transport Be Inferred From Sea Level?, Tal Ezer
CCPO Publications
Recent studies by Sturges and collaborators suggest a simple, but powerful, technique to estimate climatic changes in the transport of the Gulf Stream from the difference between the oceanic sea level calculated with a simple wind-driven Rossby wave model and the observed coastal sea level. The hypothesis behind this technique is tested, using 40 years of data (1950 to 1989) obtained from a three-dimensional Atlantic Ocean model forced by observed surface data. The analysis shows that variations in sea level difference between the ocean and the coast are indeed coherent with variations of the Gulf Stream transport for periods shorter …

Some New Approaches To Formulate And Estimate Friction-Bernoulli Jump Diffusion And Friction-Garch, Chihwa Kao
Center for Policy Research
In this paper we propose a friction model with a Beroulli jump diffusion and a friction with GARCH to examine the exchange rates movements in Taiwan. The proposed model resolves the estimation problem associated with the stepwise movements of observed exchange rates. The specification maintains the desirable economic properties associated with movements in exchange rate returns and is empirically tractable. The AIC apparently favors the model based on Friction-GARCH model.
