Hierarchical Text Classification And Evaluation, Aixin Sun, Ee Peng Lim Nov 2001

Hierarchical Text Classification And Evaluation, Aixin Sun, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hierarchical Classification refers to assigning of one or more suitable categories from a hierarchical category space to a document. While previous work in hierarchical classification focused on virtual category trees where documents are assigned only to the leaf categories, we propose atop-down level-based classification method that can classify documents to both leaf and internal categories. As the standard performance measures assume independence between categories, they have not considered the documents incorrectly classified into categories that are similar or not far from the correct ones in the category tree. We therefore propose the Category-Similarity Measures and Distance-Based Measures to consider the …

Estimation Of Error In Large Area Underwater Photomosaics Using Vehicle Navigation Data, C. Roman, H. Singh Oct 2001

Estimation Of Error In Large Area Underwater Photomosaics Using Vehicle Navigation Data, C. Roman, H. Singh

Christopher N. Roman

Creating geometrically accurate photomosaics of underwater sites using images collected from an AUV or ROV is a difficult task due to dimensional errors which grow as a function of 3D image distortion and the mosaicking process. Although photomosiacs are accurate locally their utility for accurately representing a large survey area is jeopardized by this error growth. Evaluating the error in a mosaic is the first step in creating globally accurate photomosaics of an unstructured environment with bounded error. Using vehicle navigation data and sensor offsets it is possible to estimate the error present in large area photomosaics independent of the …

Packaging Predictable Assembly With Prediction-Enabled Component Technology, Scott A. Hissam, Gabriel A. Moreno, Judith Stafford, Kurt C. Wallnau Oct 2001

Packaging Predictable Assembly With Prediction-Enabled Component Technology, Scott A. Hissam, Gabriel A. Moreno, Judith Stafford, Kurt C. Wallnau

Gabriel A. Moreno

This report describes the use of prediction-enabled component technology (PECT) as a means of packaging predictable assembly as a deployable product. A PECT results from integrating a component technology with one or more analysis technologies. Analysis technologies allow analysis and prediction of assembly-level properties prior to component assembly, and, presumably, prior to component acquisition. Analysis technologies also identify required component properties and their certifiable descriptions. This report describes the major structures of a PECT. It then discusses the means of validating the predictive powers of a PECT so that consumers may obtain measurably bounded trust in design-time predictions. Last, it …

Starting on October 1, 1995, the monitoring of seismicity within the southern Great Basin near Yucca Mountain was performed with a new digital network. This network features three-component recording with 24-bit A/D conversion in the field. Continuous data are collected at 20 sps, and event triggered windows are collected at 100 sps. A seismic bulletin of events is made by automatically associating triggers among stations, classifying the local earthquake events, and locating the earthquakes and computing their magnitudes with conventional methods. This report covers the operational and seismic results of the fifth full year (FYOO) of the improved, digitally based, …

Complementary Ansatz For The Neutrino Mass Matrix, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz, Salah Nasri Oct 2001

Complementary Ansatz For The Neutrino Mass Matrix, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz, Salah Nasri

Physics - All Scholarship

We propose a simple Ansatz for the three generation neutrino mass matrix M_\nu which is motivated from an SO(10) grand unified theory. The Ansatz can be combined with information from neutrino oscillation experiments and bounds on neutrinoless double beta decay to determine the neutrino masses themselves and to reconstruct, with some assumptions, the matrix M_\nu.

Dopamine Adsorption At Surface Modified Carbon-Fiber Electrodes, Bradley Bath, Heidi Martin, R. Mark Wightman, Mark Anderson Oct 2001

Dopamine Adsorption At Surface Modified Carbon-Fiber Electrodes, Bradley Bath, Heidi Martin, R. Mark Wightman, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry at high repetition rates was used to characterize adsorptive properties of dopamine (DA) at native and modified carbon-fiber microelectrode surfaces. Disk electrodes were fabricated from Thornel P55 fibers, and cylindrical electrodes, from Thornel T650 fibers. Their surfaces were modified by physisorption of 2,6-anthraquinone disulfonic acid (2,6-AQDS) or chemisorption of 4-carboxyphenyl or catechols. Chemisorption was accomplished via electrochemical reduction of diazonium salts. The degree of DA adsorption and its oxidation kinetics were found to vary for the two types of native carbon fiber electrodes and with the different chemical overlayers on the carbon surfaces. 2,6-AQDS measurably increased DA …

Modeling Axisymmetric Optical Precision Piezoelectric Membranes, James W. Rogers Jr. Oct 2001

Modeling Axisymmetric Optical Precision Piezoelectric Membranes, James W. Rogers Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The US Department of Defense (DOD), as well as the National Aeronautics and Astronautics Administration (NASA) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are interested in developing and deploying precise, compliant, light-weight, space-based structures. More specifically, the Air Force’s core competencies ‘Aerospace Superiority’ and ‘Information Superiority’ demand ever-increasing depth and breadth of capability. Whether used for energy transmission or optical reconnaissance, current launch restraints limit rigid space-based optical reflector size. To support this requirement, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is developing a large space-based optical membrane telescope. Inflatable reflectors can conceptually break this barrier, but controlling such a compliant structure …

Assessment Of Criticality Safety For Cylindrical Containers To Be Used In The Processing Of Spent Fuel, William Culbreth, Daniel R. Lowe, Jason Viggato

Separations Campaign (TRP)

The UREX process separates uranium from transuranic wastes (TRU) and fission products (FP). Nuclear reactors require fissile isotopes that will absorb neutrons and break apart into smaller nuclei while releasing a large amount of energy as well as multiple neutrons. Fissile isotopes in spent fuel include not only 235U, but also 239Pu, 241Pu, and several isotopes of americium (Am) and curium (Cm).

TRU contains the actinides with atomic numbers greater than that of uranium. This includes Pu, Np, Am, and Cm. When TRU is separated from uranium, the TRU still poses a significant risk of sustaining a …

An Improved Method For Determining Snowmelt Onset Dates Over Arctic Sea Ice Using Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer And Special Sensor Microwave/Imager Data, Sheldon D. Drobot, Mark R. Anderson Oct 2001

An Improved Method For Determining Snowmelt Onset Dates Over Arctic Sea Ice Using Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer And Special Sensor Microwave/Imager Data, Sheldon D. Drobot, Mark R. Anderson

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Ablation of snow over sea ice is an important physical process affecting the Arctic surface energy balance. An improved understanding of the spatial and temporal variations in snowmelt onset could be utilized to improve climate simulations in the Arctic, as well as monitor the Arctic for signs of climate change. Utilizing an updated approach for monitoring snowmelt onset over Arctic sea ice, spatial variability in passive microwave derived snowmelt onset dates is examined from 1979 through 1998. The improved technique, termed the advanced horizontal range algorithm (AHRA), utilizes temporal variations in 18/19G Hz and 37 GHz passive microwave horizontal brightness …

Investigating The Light Scalar Mesons, Joseph Schechter, D. Black, Amir H. Fariborz, Salah Moussa, S. Nasri Oct 2001

Investigating The Light Scalar Mesons, Joseph Schechter, D. Black, Amir H. Fariborz, Salah Moussa, S. Nasri

Physics - All Scholarship

We first briefly review a treatment of the scalars in meson meson scattering based on a non-linear chiral Lagrangian, with unitarity implemented by a "local" modification of the scalar propagators. It is shown that the main results are confirmed by a treatment in the SU(3) linear sigma model in which unitarity is implemented "globally". Some remarks are made on the speculative subject of the scalars' quark structure.

Targeting Alphas Can Make Coyote Control More Effective And Socially Acceptable, Michael M. Jaeger, Karen M. Blejwas, Benjamin N. Sacks, Jennifer C.C. Neale, Mary M. Conner, Dale R. Mccullough

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Research at the UC Hopland Research and Extension Center (HREC) has improved our understanding of how to reduce sheep depredation while minimizing the impact on coyotes. Analysis of a 14-year data set of HREC coyote-control efforts found that sheep depredation losses were not correlated with the number of coyotes removed in any of three time scales analyzed (yearly, seasonally and monthly) during corresponding intervals for the next 2 years. Field research using radiotelemetry to track coyotes supported and explained this finding. For example, in 1995, dominant “alphas” from four territories were associated with 89% of 74 coyote-killed lambs; “betas” and …

Quantitative Comparison Of Fecal Coliform And Fecal Streptococci Counts Of Six Ponds In Charlotte Sounty, Virginia, Melissa Dunn Back Oct 2001

Quantitative Comparison Of Fecal Coliform And Fecal Streptococci Counts Of Six Ponds In Charlotte Sounty, Virginia, Melissa Dunn Back

Theses & Honors Papers

Performing testing to detect for the presence of fecal coliform and fecal streptococci are the acceptable standard methods for judging the quality of water. Their presence and quantitation are presumed to be a predictive indicator of potentially more serious organisms being present. This study was initiated to look at the differences in fecal coliform counts between irrigation ponds and livestock ponds. The hypothesis was that livestock ponds would have a significantly higher count of fecal coliform and fecal streptococci than irrigation ponds. This hypothesis was accepted. Six privately owned ponds in Charlotte County, Virginia were used to evaluate for the …

Simultaneous Determination Of Enantiomers Of Structurally Related Anticholinergic Analogs In Human Serum By Liquid Chromatography–Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry With On-Line Sample Cleanup, Vladimı́R Čápka, Yan Xu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Trihexyphenidyl, biperiden and procyclidine are anticholinergic drugs produced as racemates for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. This paper describes a simple and sensitive LC–MS method for the simultaneous determination of these compounds in human serum. An on-line sample clean-up procedure was used, where serum samples were directly injected into a “restricted-access media” pre-column. After the exclusion of the serum proteins, the drug molecules were eluted to a β-cyclodextrin analytical column for chiral separation. The quantitation was done by electrospray ionization MS using diphenidol as an internal standard. The method developed has limits of detection of 1 ng/ml, at least two-orders-of-magnitude …

Magnetic States Of Discontinuous Co80fe20al2o3 Multilayers, Christian Binek Oct 2001

Magnetic States Of Discontinuous Co80fe20al2o3 Multilayers, Christian Binek

Christian Binek Publications

Discontinuous metal–insulator multilayers [Co80Fe20(t)/Al2O3(3 nm)]n were studied by SQUID magnetometry and AC susceptometry. CoFe forms ferromagnetic particles in the Al2O3 matrix. In this paper, we focus on the field dependence of the AC susceptibility of samples with t=1.3 nm. We find strong evidence for transitions from a superpara- to a superferromagnetic and, finally, to a reentrant superspin glass previous state.

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Between 34 and 15 million years (Myr) ago, when planetary temperatures were 3-4°C warmer than at present and atmospheric CO2 concentrations were twice as high as today, the Antarctic ice sheets may have been unstable. Oxygen isotope records from deep-sea sediment cores suggest that during this time fluctuations in global temperatures and high-latitude continental ice volumes were influenced by orbital cycles. But it has hitherto not been possible to calibrate the inferred changes in ice volume with direct evidence for oscillations of the Antarctic ice sheets. Here we present sediment data from shallow marine cores in the western Ross …

Exchange Bias In Fe0.6zn0.4f2 Heterostructures, Christian Binek Oct 2001

Exchange Bias In Fe0.6zn0.4f2 Heterostructures, Christian Binek

Christian Binek Publications

The previous exchange bias field, He, is measured in Fe0.6Zn0.4F2/Fe heterosystems prepared from Fe layers of 14 and 5 nm thickness which are deposited on top of the compensated (1 1 0) surface of the antiferromagnet. Deviations from a linear dependence of He on the magnetization of the Fe layer are attributed to ferromagnetic domains. Moreover, piezomagnetism and its influence on He are evidenced.

Modeling The Effects Of Transforming Growth Factor-Beta On Extracellular Matrix Alignment In Dermal Wound Repair, J. C. Dallon, J. A. Sherratt, P. K. Maini

Faculty Publications

We present a novel mathematical model for collagen deposition and alignment during dermal wound healing, focusing on the regulatory effects of TGF. Our work extends a previously developed model which considers the interactions between fibroblasts and extracellular matrix, composed of collagen and a fibrin based blood clot, by allowing fibroblasts to orient the collagen matrix, and produce and degrade the extracellular matrix, while the matrix can direct the fibroblasts and control their speed. Here we extend the model by allowing a time varying concentration of TGF to alter the properties of the fibroblasts. Thus we are able to simulate experiments …

Highly Plasma Etch-Resistant Photoresist Composition Containing A Photosensitive Polymeric Titania Precursor, Tony D. Flaim, Douglas J. Guerrero, Michelle R. Fowler, William Joseph James, Vladimir Petrovsky, Harlan U. Anderson

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A composition is derived from an addition polymerizable organotitanium polymer which upon exposure to an oxygen plasma or baking in air, is converted to titanium dioxide (titania) or is converted to a mixed, titanium-containing metal oxide. The metal oxide formed in situ imparts etch- resistant action to a patterned photoresist layer. The composition may also be directly deposited and patterned into permanent metal oxide device features by a photolithographic process.

Mantle Control Of Plate Boundary Deformation, Timothy I. Melbourne, Don Helmberger Oct 2001

Mantle Control Of Plate Boundary Deformation, Timothy I. Melbourne, Don Helmberger

Faculty Scholarship for the Cascadia Hazards Institute

The seismic wavefield propagating along the recently instrumented Pacific-North American plate boundary (California) displays remarkable variation, with regional shear waves arriving at coastal stations up to 20 seconds earlier than equidistant stations in eastern California. Broadband modeling of this data reveals that coastal paths sample fast upper mantle typical of Miocene-aged ocean plate (> 50 Km thickness). Inland paths sample slower uppermost mantle, with the seismic lithosphere, or lid, measuring less than 5 Km thick, characteristic of the Basin and Range extensional province. The boundary in the uppermost mantle between these provinces is sharp, expressing the juxtaposition of the stronger …

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

Periodic magnetic nanodot arrays have been produced on an area as large as 1 cm×1 cm by direct nanolithography using interferometric laser radiation. The dots are formed by the local annealing of sputtered amorphous Co–C films in regions where the laser intensity is highest. At room temperature the dots exhibit ferromagnetic order and are embedded in a paramagnetic matrix. The onset of room-temperature ferromagnetism is caused by nanoscale chemical and morphological changes during dot formation and reflects the phase separation of magnetic Co-rich clusters. The present single-step nanolithography is potentially an efficient method for fabrication of patterned magnetic arrays.
