An important problem in studying the etiology of colon cancer is understanding the relationship between DNA adduct levels (broadly, DNA damage) in cells within colonic crypts in distal and proximal parts of the colon, following treatment with a carcinogen and different types of diet. In particular, it is important to understand whether rats who have elevated adduct levels in particular positions in distal region crypts also have elevated levels in the same positions of the crypts in proximal regions, and whether this relationship depends on diet. Quantum chemistry has been a staple of undergraduate curricula for several decades. For the most part, however, it has been the rare course in quantum chemistry that advances much beyond the hydrogen atom (or perhaps H2) in terms of describing the electronic structure of real molecular systems. Driven in part by staggering advances in computer technology during the last 15 years or so, which have rendered possible on a laptop calculations that once would have taxed the largest mainframes available, this situation now seems to be changing (1–3).

On Misorientation Distribution Evolution During Anisotropic Grain Growth, Elizabeth A. Holm, Gregory N. Hassold, Mark A. Miodownik

In order to study the development of texture and boundary character during annealing, three-dimensional grain crystallography and crystallographically mediated grain boundary properties were incorporated into a finite temperature Monte Carlo model for grain growth. Randomly textured microstructures evolve normally, with growth exponent n=0.96. While texture remains random, the steady-state boundary misorientation distribution favors low-angle boundaries. To first order, low-angle boundaries increase by lengthening, not by proliferating. In contrast, microstructures with a strong single-component texture develop four-grain junctions and highly curved grain boundaries, which alter evolution. The boundary misorientation distribution narrows and shifts to low angles, and no steady state …

We have applied techniques from differential motion estimation to the problem of automatic elastic registration of medical images. This method models the mapping between images as a locally affine but globally smooth warp. The mapping also explicitly accounts for variations in image intensities. This approach is simple and highly effective across a broad range of medical images. We show the efficacy of this approach on several synthetic and clinical images.

The Edge Of The Universe-Noneuclidean Wallpaper, Frank A. Farris

Mathematics and Computer Science

A simple mathematical model of a two-dimensional universe, called the Poincaré Upper Halfplane, illustrates the possibility of a universe with an unattainable edge. In this article, I describe this model -a famous example of a noneuclidean geometry-and explain how conversations with an analytic number theorist led me to create wallpaper patterns for its inhabitants. These are interesting not only for their high "Gee whiz!"factor, but also as a window for observing the features of this unusual geometry.

In this paper, we study stochastic functional differential equations (sfde's) whose solutions are constrained to live on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to such sfde's. We consider examples of geometrical sfde's and establish the smooth dependence of the solution on finite-dimensional parameters.

Specific heat and Faraday rotation magnetometry were used to determine the axial magnetic phase diagram of the dilute hexagonal antiferromagnet Fe0.85Mg0.15Br2. In contrast to metamagnetic pure FeBr2, the first-order line of transverse phase transitions, H1(T), is disconnected with the antiferro-to-paramagnetic phase line Hc(T) and extends down to Ht=0 at Tt≈8.7 . Quantifying economic damages and restoration measures for injuries to coral reefs has been a difficult task. In the U.S., habitat equivalency analysis (HEA) has emerged as a novel tool that combines biological and economic information to identify replacement habitats of an appropriate scale to substitute for the interim losses resulting from coral reef injuries. There is an increasing use of artificial structure in coral reef restoration (for references, see Spieler et al., this volume). Often artificial reef structures are chosen for a restoration project simply because they were used elsewhere. To use artificial substrate effectively in coral reef restoration certain basic knowledge is required: (1) what is the artificial substrate expected to accomplish relative to the goals of the restoration effort and (2) what are the expected interactions of the selected substrate’s composition, texture, orientation, and design with the damaged environment and the biota of interest. Degradation Of Reef Structure, Coral And Fish Communities In The Red Sea By Ship Groundings And Dynamite Fisheries, Bernhard Riegl

Reef degradation was investigated on 66 Egyptian Red Sea reefs—60 reefs for dynamite damage (using line transects) and six ship grounding sites (using 1 m sample squares). Ship groundings and dynamite fishing caused similar damage, reduction of the reef to rubble (65% of reefs were dynamited, mostly leeward, 58%). Changes in coral (line transect study) and fish communities (point count study) in impacted sites were documented. On impacted reefs, coral cover decreased, bare substratum and rubble increased, and fish dominance shifted away from Pomacentridae. Oceanographic conditions result in a stable pattern of coral communities (windward Acropora, leeward Porites). …

Strong Enhancement Of Superconducting TC In Ferromagnetic Phases, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick, Dietrich Belitz, Thomas Vojta, Rajesh S. Narayanan

It is shown that the critical temperature for spin-triplet, p-wave superconductivity mediated by spin fluctuations is generically much higher in a Heisenberg ferromagnetic phase than in a paramagnetic one, due to the coupling of the magnons to the longitudinal magnetic susceptibility. Together with the tendency of the low-temperature ferromagnetic transition in very clean Heisenberg magnets to be of first order, this qualitatively explains the phase diagram recently observed in UGe2.

We study a class of integrodifferential equations and related ordinary differential equations for the initial value problem of a rigid sphere falling through an infinite fluid medium. We prove that for creeping Newtonian flow, the motion of the sphere is monotone in its approach to the steady state solution given by the Stokes drag. We discuss this property in terms of a general nonautonomous second order differential equation, focusing on a decaying nonautonomous term motivated by the sedimenting sphere problem

Current trend to miniaturization requires precise control of micro- and domain structure of ferroelectric materials at the nanoscale level. This is essential for future applications of ferroelectric thin films in non-volatile memories, microactuators and pyroelectric arrays. In this work, the seeding effect on the nanoscale properties of ferroelectric Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) thin films is investigated using scanning force microscopy (SFM) capable of simultaneously resolving topographic and domain features on the surface of the films. Many methods have been described to identify regulatory motifs in the transcription control regions of genes that exhibit similar patterns of gene expression across a variety of experimental conditions. Here we focus on a single experimental condition, and utilize gene expression data to identify sequence motifs associated with genes that are activated under this experimental condition. We use a linear model with two way interactions to model gene expression as a function of sequence features (words) present in presumptive transcription control regions.
