Infrared Spectroscopy Of H-Bonded Bridges Stretched Across The Cis-Amide Group: Ii. Ammonia And Mixed Ammonia/Water Bridges, A. V. Fedorov, John R. Cable, Joel R. Carney, Timothy S. Zwier

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Clusters of two model cis amides, oxindole and 3,4-dihydro-2(IH)-quinolinone, containing one and two ammonia molecules have been studied in the IR hydride stretch region using resonant ion-dip IR spectroscopy. The spectra confirm that ammonia is able to form hydrogen-bonded bridges across the adjacent amide N-H and C=O sites in a manner very similar to that of water. Such bridged structures require that ammonia assume the role of a hydrogen bond donor. Further similarities of the hydrogen bonding capabilities of ammonia and water have been revealed by investigations of ternary clusters containing an amide, one ammonia, and one water molecule. Experimentally, …

Stochastic Functional Differential Equations On Manifolds, Rémi Léandre, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed

Articles and Preprints

In this paper, we study stochastic functional differential equations (sfde's) whose solutions are constrained to live on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to such sfde's. We consider examples of geometrical sfde's and establish the smooth dependence of the solution on finite-dimensional parameters.

The paper reports on the temperature dependence of the electrical and thermal conductivity, Hall constant, and Seebeck coefficient of Bi2−xInxSe3 (x=0, 0.2, 0.4) single crystals measured over the temperature range from 2 to 300 K. One single-valley conduction band model is used to interpret relations among transport coefficients. The data analysis relies on the use of a mixed carrier scattering mechanism consisting of acoustic scattering and scattering on ionized impurities. The effect of In incorporation into the Bi2Se3 crystal lattice on the individual components of thermal conductivity is evaluated and discussed. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.

The Structure And Stability Of Expanding And Converging Near-Stoichiometric Flames, Raymond Addabbo Aug 2001

The Structure And Stability Of Expanding And Converging Near-Stoichiometric Flames, Raymond Addabbo

Dissertations

The stability of expanding and converging premixed flames is investigated theoretically. These configurations are inherently unsteady and represent simple examples of positively (expanding) and negatively (converging) stretched flames. A new model is employed in this study that incorporates both hydrodynamic and diffusional-thermal effects. The model expands earlier works by incorporating variable transport properties, variations in the mixture strength and a more realistic dependence on viscosity.

The expanding flame is shown to remain stable at small radii provided the thermal diffusivity exceeds the mass diffusivity of the deficient reactant. However, once the flame achieves a critical size, a cellular instability appears, …

Asymptotic Methods In Applied Waveguide Problems, Helen Martynov Aug 2001

Asymptotic Methods In Applied Waveguide Problems, Helen Martynov

Dissertations

Some of the most challenging problems in acoustics and electromagnetics involve the study of scattered fields in waveguides caused by targets of elaborate shape. The complexity of the resulting scattered field depends on the geometry of the scatterer, and exact solutions exist only for the simple geometries.

The asymptotic methods developed in this dissertation give the approximate solutions for the scattered fields in two practically important geometries: an object placed inside a stratified waveguide, and a waveguide with multiple abrupt width transitions. The solutions for these geometries are obtained by approximating the field near the target or junction by the …

Structural, Transport And Magnetic Studies Of Perovskite Bi1-X Cax Mn O3, Hyungje Woo

Dissertations

This dissertation presents an investigation of the fundamental physics of the perovskite system Bi1-xCaxMn03. This material belongs to a group of simple perovskites called the manganites which are of technological importance for magnetic device applications as read-head sensors.

The Bi1-xCaxMnO3 system is known to exhibit charge ordering (and high sensitivity to magnetic fields) for a much broader range of x than the well-characterized La1-xCaxMnO3 system. However, the properties of Bi1-xCaxMnO3 over the entire doping range are not well understood. …

Detection Of Vapor Phase Mercury Species By Laser Fluorescence Methods, Xiaomei Tong Aug 2001

Detection Of Vapor Phase Mercury Species By Laser Fluorescence Methods, Xiaomei Tong

Dissertations

Elemental and compound mercury are often both volatile and air stable. Several mercury species emissions have been identified in off-gases from industrial processes. The high toxicity of mercury species and the presence of mercury species in municipal waste and coal have prompted a demand for a cost-effective, accurate, and rugged technique for real-time, continuous detection of mercury species vapors. Real-time, continuous emission measurements are important for process control, monitoring, and remediation. At present, there is no commercial continuous emission monitoring (CEM) technique or instrumentation to reliably monitor volatile mercury species emissions from industrial stacks. Conventional measurement methods, such as cold …

Electrostatic Micro Actuators For Mirror And Other Applications, Xingtao Wu

Dissertations

Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) based electrostatic micro actuators are becoming important building blocks for innovations in optical signal processing and computing systems due to their inherently small size, high density, high speed and low power consumption. Generally, the principle of operation in these systems can be described as: an electrostatic attractive force causes a mechanical rotation, translation or deformation of a mirror plate, controlling the power, phase or direction of a light beam while it propagates through some medium or through free space. The fast paced, competitive research and development efforts widely being undertaken, both in academia and industry, are demanding …

Computationally Efficient Search For Large Primes, Wieslawa E. Amber

Theses

To satisfy the speed of communication and to meet the demand for the continuously larger prime numbers, the primality testing and prime numbers generating algorithms require continuous advancement. To find the most efficient algorithm, a need for a survey of methods arises. Concurrently, an urge for the analysis of algorithms' performances emanates. The critical criteria in the analysis of the prime numbers generation are the number of probes, number of generated primes, and an average time required in producing one prime. Hence, the purpose of this thesis is to indicate the best performing algorithm. The survey the methods, establishment of …

Stimulated Emission Of Polarization-Entangled Photons, Antia Lamas-Linares, John C. Howell, Dik Bouwmeester Aug 2001

Stimulated Emission Of Polarization-Entangled Photons, Antia Lamas-Linares, John C. Howell, Dik Bouwmeester

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Entangled photon pairs—discrete light quanta that exhibit non-classical correlations—play a crucial role in quantum information science (for example, in demonstrations of quantum non-locality1,2,3,4,5,6,7, quantum teleportation8,9 and quantum cryptography10,11,12,31). At the macroscopic optical-field level non-classical correlations can also be important, as in the case of squeezed light13, entangled light beams14,15 and teleportation of continuous quantum variables16. Here we use stimulated parametric down-conversion to study entangled states of light that bridge the gap between discrete and macroscopic optical quantum correlations. We demonstrate experimentally the onset of laser-like action for entangled photons, through …

Designing A Terminal Area Bird Detection And Monitoring System Based On Asr-9 Data, Seth Troxel, Mark Isaminger, Beth Karl, Mark Weber, Arthur Levy

2001 Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada, Third Joint Annual Meeting, Calgary, AB

Conflicts between birds and commercial aircraft are a noteworthy problem at both large and small airports [Cleary, 1999]. The risk factor for United States airports continues to increase due to the steady rise in take-off/landings and bird populations. There is a significant bird strike problem in the terminal area as shown by the incidents reported in the National Bird Strike Database [Cleary and Dolbeer, 1999]. The focus of bird strike mitigation in the past has centered primarily on wildlife management techniques. Recently, an Avian Hazard Advisory System (AHAS) has been developed to reduce the risks of bird strikes to military …

Simultaneous Projectile And Target Ionization In He⁺ + Ne Collisions, J. Fiol, Ronald E. Olson, A. C.F. Santos, G. M. Sigaud, E. C. Montenegro

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cross sections for single and multiple ionization of the target atom with simultaneous ionization of the projectile have been measured for 1-4 MeV collisions of He+ with Ne. The observations are interpreted using the n-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. The 11-body calculations include the L-shell electrons of the Ne and the K-shell electron on the He+. In this model, each electron interacts with both nuclei and with all the electrons belonging to the other centre. For single ionization from both centres, it is found that the dynamical electron-electron (e-e) interaction produces a clear signature in the …

A New Method For Impregnating Nafion Solution Into The Electrode Of Pemfc, Qian Tang, Ming Han, Bao-Lian Yi, Zhi-Yin Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

We have developed a new method for impregnating Nafion solution into the catalyst layer of homemade hydrophobic electrode using capillary process. Those electrodes show better performance and higher utilization of catalyst (detected by CV and TEM) than traditional spray method in PEMFC. According to the results of SEM photograph and linear_analysis of sulfur and platinum for the electrode cross_section, we can conclude that the resin is uniform in the catalyst layer and has almost same depth as catalyst in the impregnated electrode. While in traditional method resin is not uniform in the catalyst layer and penetrates into the diffusion layer, …

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present millimeter and submillimeter wavelength observations and near-infrared K -band imaging toward the bright gamma-ray burst GRB 010222. Over seven epochs the flux density of the source was constant wit h an average flux density 3.74 ± 0.53 mJy at 350 GHz and 1.05 ± 0.22 mJy at 250 GHz, giving a spectral index α = 3 . 78 ± 0.25 (where F∝ να). We rule out the possibility that this emission originated from the burst or its afterglow and we conclu de that it is due to a dusty, high redshift starburst galaxy (SMM J14522+43 01). …

Microstructure And Electrochemical Properties Of The Melt_Spinning Zr_(0.9)Ti_(0.1) (Ni,Co,Mn,V)_(2.1) Alloy, Ming-Fen Wen, Yu-Chun Zhai, Lian Chen, Min Tong, Hua Zhen, Rong-Jun Ma Aug 2001

Microstructure And Electrochemical Properties Of The Melt_Spinning Zr_(0.9)Ti_(0.1) (Ni,Co,Mn,V)_(2.1) Alloy, Ming-Fen Wen, Yu-Chun Zhai, Lian Chen, Min Tong, Hua Zhen, Rong-Jun Ma

Journal of Electrochemistry

The microstructure and electrochemical properties of Zr 0.9 Ti 0.1 (Ni,Co,Mn,V) 2.1 alloys prepared by both the melt_spinning method and the conventional induction melting were investigated. XRD studies show that Zr 0.9 Ti 0.1 (Ni,Co,Mn,V) 2.1 alloys at as_cast,melt_spinning and annealing are all face center cubic structure with C15 laves phase, the higher the melt_spinning rate, the more the amorphous content. The electrochemical measurements show that melt_spinning alloys have better active behavior, low discharge capacity(<280 mAh/g); but after annealed, the alloys are activated completely with 30 cycles, the capacities about 340 mAh/g are higher than those of as_cast and melt_spinning alloys;the annealec alloys have a better cycle stability than that of as_cast alloy, and the higher the melt_spinning rate is, the more stable the alloy becomes; at 300 mAh/g current density, the capacity of annealed 40 m/s alloy is up to 85% of the maximum capacity after 800 cycles, the capacity decay rate is about 6.9%.

The current increased exponentially with the overpotential at the high potential region. A good linear relationship between ln( I/η ) and η 1/2 was observed. A model system Au/SAM/Hg was constructed and its I~V curve was measured. Similar phenomena were observed. There was also a linear relationship …

Uneven Anodic Dissolution Of Iron Induced By Magnetic Field, Zhan-Peng Lv, De-Lun Huang, Wu Yang Aug 2001

Uneven Anodic Dissolution Of Iron Induced By Magnetic Field, Zhan-Peng Lv, De-Lun Huang, Wu Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The effects of magnetic field on anodic dissolution of iron in sulfuric acid were studied by potentiostatic polarization measurements and scanning electron microscopy observation. Magnetic field would reduce the surface film coverage fraction on electrode by enhancing the film dissolution process, thus made the electrode prone to active dissolution state. With increasing the applied potentials, magnetic field would accelerate the anodic dissolution, change the oscillation state or passive state to active dissolution state, or maintain the passive state, respectively. Potential for onset of passivation moved in the noble direction when magnetic field was imposed. At specific anodic potentials, denting occurred …

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Study On A3 Steel In Anti-Corrosive Pigment Extract Solution, Zhi-Jun Gu, Yong-Gui Liao, Zhi-Gang Zhang, Qi-Long Guo, Fang-Teng Su, Wen-Yun Hu, Yan-Zhen Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

The corrosion behaviors of A3 steel in different pH, 3.5%NaCl, modified zinc phosphate and aluminum triphosphate extract solutions have been studied by EIS. Results show:(a) The resistance increases with the increase of pH value under the same circumstances, but the capacity is the reverse.(b) Zinc phosphate, because of its low solubility, shows no inhibitive performance for A3 steel in 3.5% NaCl extract solutions. (c) Aluminum triphosphate has good inhibitive performance for A3 steel in 3.5% NaCl extract solutions at a pH of 6, probably because the triphosphate ion can complex with the corrosion_product, such as ferric and ferrous ions, and …
