Dynamic Bacterial And Viral Response To An Algal Bloom At Subzero Temperatures, Patricia L. Yager, Tara L. Connelly, Behzad Mortazavi, K. Eric Wommack, Nasreen Bano, James E. Bauer, Stephen Opsahl, James T. Hollibaugh

VIMS Articles

New evidence suggests that cold‐loving (psychrophilic) bacteria may be a dynamic component of the episodic bloom events of high‐latitude ecosystems. Here we report the results of an unusually early springtime study of pelagic microbial activity in the coastal Alaskan Arctic. Heterotrophic bacterioplankton clearly responded to an algal bloom by doubling cell size, increasing the fraction of actively respiring cells (up to an unprecedented 84% metabolically active using redox dye CTC), shifting substrate‐uptake capabilities from kinetic parameters better adapted to lower substrate concentrations to those more suited for higher concentrations, and more than doubling cell abundance. Community composition (determined by polymerase …

Distributions Of Roosting Sandhill Cranes As Identified By Aerial Thermography, Tierny L. Parrish, Wayne A. Hubert, Stanley H. Anderson, Michael Pucherelli, Warren Mangus Jun 2001

Distributions Of Roosting Sandhill Cranes As Identified By Aerial Thermography, Tierny L. Parrish, Wayne A. Hubert, Stanley H. Anderson, Michael Pucherelli, Warren Mangus

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

We used aerial thermography to determine the location of sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) roosting sites during a single night over a 142-km reach of the Platte River, Nebraska. We assessed the influences of human disturbance features, screening of disturbance features by woody vegetation, distance to surrounding cropland of various types and channel width on distribution patterns of sandhill crane roosting sites with the aid of a geographic information system (GIS). We found that roosting sites were farther from bridges and paved roads than random points along the river channel; a visual woody screen mitigated the effect of bridges …

Structural And Functional Analysis Of Mutant Matal Homeodomains By Multidimensional Nmr Spectroscopy, David F. Ott Jun 2001

Structural And Functional Analysis Of Mutant Matal Homeodomains By Multidimensional Nmr Spectroscopy, David F. Ott

Honors Theses

Homeodomain proteins are transcription factors that contain a conserved 60- residue sequence, beginning with an N-terminal unstructured arm, followed by an alpha helix, a loop, and a helix-tum-helix. The yeast protein MATa1 is unusual among homeodomains in that, as a monomer, it binds very poorly to its DNA operator. However, the a1- α2 heterodimer binds to the hsg operator with 3000 times the affinity it has for nonspecific DNA. Studies have shown that most of the heterodimer's binding specificity is due to a1 rather than α2 (1,2). To identify the structural changes that transform al into a strong, sequence-specific DNA …

Transcribing Spacetime Data Into Matrices, Vatche Sahakian Jun 2001

Transcribing Spacetime Data Into Matrices, Vatche Sahakian

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In certain supergravity backgrounds, D0 branes may polarize into higher dimensional Dp branes. We study this phenomenon in some generality from the perspective of a local inertial observer and explore polarization effects resulting from tidal-like forces. We find D2 brane droplets made of D0 branes at an extremum of the Born-Infeld action even in scenarios where the RR fields may be zero. These solutions lead us to a local formulation of the UV-IR correspondence. A holographic Planck scale bound on the number of D0 branes plays an important role in the analysis. We focus on the impact of higher order …

Uniqueness Of Volume-Minimizing Submanifolds Calibrated By The First Pontryagin Form, Daniel A. Grossman, Weiqing Gu Jun 2001

Uniqueness Of Volume-Minimizing Submanifolds Calibrated By The First Pontryagin Form, Daniel A. Grossman, Weiqing Gu

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

One way to understand the geometry of the real Grassmann manifold Gk(Rk+n) parameterizing oriented k-dimensional subspaces of Rk+n is to understand the volume-minimizing subvarieties in each homology class. Some of these subvarieties can be determined by using a calibration. In previous work, one of the authors calculated the set of 4-planes calibrated by the first Pontryagin form p1 on Gk(Rk+n) for all k,n ≥4, and identified a family of mutually congruent round 4-spheres which are consequently homologically volume-minimizing. In the present work, we associate to the family of calibrated …

In this paper, a commercial FPGA coprocessor board is used to accelerate the processing of queries on a relational database that contains texts and images. FPGA designs for text searching and image matching are described and their performances summarized. A potential design for a database JOIN operator is then studied. A query optimization preprocessor is then proposed.

Mathematics As Worship, David J. Stucki Jun 2001

Mathematics As Worship, David J. Stucki

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2001

In keeping with the mission of this organization to explore the relationship of faith to our discipline, I would like to take this opportunity to investigate the relationship, if any, between mathematics and worship. There have been throughout history, at least since Pythagoras, connections made between the mathematical and the theological. Many of these such efforts have followed the Pythagorean cult in deifying number, thus making mathematics the object of worship. Othes have effectively situated theology in subservience to mathematical reason. However, these are not the only alternatives.

Once we admit the possibility of a connection between mathematics and theology, …

On Periodic Points On Maps Of Trees And The Expansive Property, Fred Worth Jun 2001

On Periodic Points On Maps Of Trees And The Expansive Property, Fred Worth

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2001

In this paper, we consider the expansive property (A homeomorphism, f, of a metric space, X, onto itself is called expansive if there is a positive number, ε, such that if x and y are distinct points of X, then there exists an integer, n = n(x,y), such that d(f n(x), f n(y)) > ε. It should be noted that n may be negative.) and how it relates to shift homeomorphisms of a tree with a single, surjective bonding map. We also consider some results regarding the periodicity of points in self-maps of trees.

Thml: Theological Markup Language For The Christian Classics Ethereal Library, Harry Plantinga Jun 2001

Thml: Theological Markup Language For The Christian Classics Ethereal Library, Harry Plantinga

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2001

This document describes the Theological Markup Language (ThML), an XML markup language for theological texts. ThML was developed for use in the Christian Classics Ethereal Library (CCEL), but it is hoped that the language will serve as a royalty-free format for theological texts in other applications. Key design goals are that the language should be (1) rich enough to represent information needed for digital libraries and for theological study involving multiple, related texts, including cross-reference, synchronization, indexing, and scripture references, (2) based on XML and usable with World Wide Web tools, (3) automatically convertible to other common formats, and (4) …

Gravitational Acceleration In Hades, Andrew Simoson Jun 2001

Gravitational Acceleration In Hades, Andrew Simoson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2001

Does acceleration due to gravity increase or decrease upon descending from Earth’s surface? The answer—as we show—depends on one’s model for Earth’s density. For our Earth, gravity increases before it collapses to zero at Earth center.

Protection Of Cave Spring Cave Biota And Groundwater Basin, G. O. Graening, A. V. Brown

Technical Reports

This is the fourth in a series of reports on the status of endangered biota and of environmental quality in Cave Springs Cave (CSC), Benton County, Arkansas (Brown et al., 1998; Graening and Brown, 1999, 2000), funded by the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission (ANHC). As a result of these studies, Cave Springs Cave is now one of the most thoroughly studied cave ecosystems in Arkansas. This series of studies has spawned a renewed interest in cave ecosystems and their vulnerable condition. There are now many projects focusing upon the documentation of subterranean biodiversity and its protection. Partners include the Arkansas …

Summarizing Data Sets For Classification, Christopher W. Kinzig, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Gary B. Lamont, Robert E. Marmelstein Jun 2001

Summarizing Data Sets For Classification, Christopher W. Kinzig, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Gary B. Lamont, Robert E. Marmelstein

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper describes our approach and experiences with implementing a data mining system using genetic algorithms in C++. In contrast with earlier classification algorithms that tended to “tile” the data sets using some pre-specified “shapes”, the proposed system is based on Marmelstein’s work on determining natural boundaries for class homogeneous regions. These boundaries are further refined to construct a compact set of simple data mining rules for classification.

Fine Structure On The Green Band In Zno, D. C. Reynolds, David C. Look, B. Jogai Jun 2001

Fine Structure On The Green Band In Zno, D. C. Reynolds, David C. Look, B. Jogai

Physics Faculty Publications

An emission band at 2.4 eV, called the green band, is observed in most ZnO samples, no matter what growth technique is used. Sometimes this band includes fine structure, which consists mainly of doublets, repeated with a longitudinal-optical-phonon-energy spacing (72 meV). We have developed a vibronic model for the green band, based on transitions from two separate shallow donors to a deep acceptor. The donors, at energies 30 and 60 meV from the conduction-band edge, respectively, are also found from Hall-effect measurements.

Evidence For Shallow Acceptors In Gan, D. C. Reynolds, David C. Look, B. Jogai, Richard J. Molnar Jun 2001

Evidence For Shallow Acceptors In Gan, D. C. Reynolds, David C. Look, B. Jogai, Richard J. Molnar

Physics Faculty Publications

Two low-temperature photoluminescence lines in GaN, in the region of energies commonly interpreted as longitudinal optical-phonon replicas of free excitons, donor-bound excitons, or acceptor-bound excitons, are reinterpreted as acceptor-bound excitons (A0X’s) collapsing to n=2 and n=3 excited states, respectively, of the acceptors involved. Application of this model to two sets of A0X-related lines in hydride-vapor-phase-grown GaN gives acceptor energies of 85±1, and 115±1 meV, respectively. The existence of such shallow acceptor states, if confirmed, is of great technological importance.

The Role Of Interfaces In The Magnetoresistance Of Au/Fe/Au/Fe/Gaas(001), Axel Enders, T. L. Monchesky, Kenneth Myrtle, R. Urban, Brett Heinrich, Jurgen Kirschner, X.-G. Zhang, W. H. Butler

Axel Enders Publications

The electron transport and magnetoresistance (MR) were investigated in high quality crystalline epitaxial Fe(001) and Au(001) films and exchange coupled Au/Fe/Au/Fe/GaAs(001) trilayer structures. Fits to the experimental data were based on the semiclassical Boltzmann equation, which incorporates the electronic properties obtained from first-principles local density functional calculations. The fits require a surprisingly high asymmetry for the spin dependent electron lifetimes in Fe, τ/ τ =10 at room temperature. Despite the large atomic terraces at the Au/vacuum and Fe/GaAs interfaces the scattering at the outer interfaces was found to be diffuse. The origin of MR in Au/Fe/Au/Fe/GaAs(001) structures …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Parity violation in p-wave neutron resonances of 121Sb, 123Sb, and 127I has been measured by transmission of a longitudinally polarized neutron beam through natural antimony and iodine targets. The measurements were performed at the pulsed spallation neutron source of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Five statistically significant parity violation effects were observed in 121Sb, one effect in 123Sb, and seven effects in 127I. The weak interaction rms matrix elements and the corresponding spreading widths were determined.

Smartreminder: A Case Study On Context-Sensitive Applications, Arun Mathias Jun 2001

Smartreminder: A Case Study On Context-Sensitive Applications, Arun Mathias

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Designing context-sensitive applications is challenging. We design and implement SmartReminder to explore designing context-sensitive applications and to demonstrate how the SOLAR system can be used in developing such applications. SmartReminder is an application that reminds the user based on contextual information. Current appointment-reminder applications remind the user about their appointments at an arbitrarily specified time. For instance, they might remind the user ten minutes before each appointment. SmartReminder, on the other hand, uses contextual information, like location, to better estimate the appropriate reminder time for each appointment. It reminds the user based on where they are, where they need to …

Implementing A Database Information System For An Electronic Baseball Scorecard, Tiffany M. Wong

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

We present our design and implementation of a database system of information storage and retrieval for an electronic baseball scorecard. The program uses the relational MySQL database to hold information and a Tcl API to handle interactions between the database and the user interface code. This paper discusses the inner workings of how information storage was broken down inside the database, how queries were internally constructed in accordance with the user's input, and how statistics for players and teams were calculated and returned to the user. Finally, we discuss some limitations attached to our current implementation of the program and …

Efficient Compression Of Generic Function Dispatch Tables, Eric Kidd Jun 2001

Efficient Compression Of Generic Function Dispatch Tables, Eric Kidd

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

A generic function is similar to an overloaded operator, but provides a way to select an appropriate behavior at run-time instead of compile-time. Dujardin and colleagues have proposed an algorithm for building and compressing generic function dispatch tables. We present several modifications to their algorithm, including an improvement to Pseudo-Closest-Poles and two new algorithms for compressing pole tables. The two new compression algorithms are simple and fast, and one produces smaller output than the original.

An Armored Data Vault, Alex Iliev Jun 2001

An Armored Data Vault, Alex Iliev

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

We consider the problem of secure long-term archiving of network traffic, an instance of the problem of storing data securely. We approach the problem using secure hardware, which enables the enforcement of flexible access policy. The policy cannot be circumvented by anyone, even insiders, and so we are assured that access to the data is as originally intended. The policy can be expressed as any feasible computation, as it will be checked inside the secure hardware without possibility of interference. We discuss our design of a device to perform such network data archiving and have implemented a prototpe device. We …

Ecomrisk.Org : A Site To Classify And Organize The Risks Of Performing Business On The Internet, Aidan Stanley Marcuss Jun 2001

Ecomrisk.Org : A Site To Classify And Organize The Risks Of Performing Business On The Internet, Aidan Stanley Marcuss

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

As the use of the Internet and other computer networks to transact business grows, there is an ever increasing need for those taking part in those transactions to understand the risks of doing so. While there are many web sites that have created valuable databases of specific vulnerabilities for certain types of hardware and software, there is a lack of focus on attempting to analyze the interaction of businesses, their systems, computer networks, and their customers and the risks that are created by either intended or unattended interactions. EcomRISK.org is a web site that presents a clear taxonomy to classify …

An Empirical Study Of Training And Testing Error In Boosting, David D. Latham Jun 2001

An Empirical Study Of Training And Testing Error In Boosting, David D. Latham

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Bounds have been proven for both training and testing error for the boosting algorithm AdaBoost, but in practice neither seem to produce a particularly tight bound. In this paper we share some observations of these bounds from empirical results, and then explore some properties of the algorithm with an eye towards finding an improved bound for the performance of AdaBoost. Based on our empirical evidence, the error of a hypothesis which labels examples probabilistically based upon the confidence of the vote of the weak hypotheses forms a tighter bound for the training error.

Finally, we outline and provide data from a demonstration of this application.

Optimizing The Dimensional Method For Performing Multidimensional, Multiprocessor, Out-Of-Core Ffts, Jeremy T. Fineman Jun 2001

Optimizing The Dimensional Method For Performing Multidimensional, Multiprocessor, Out-Of-Core Ffts, Jeremy T. Fineman

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

We present an improved version of the Dimensional Method for computing multidimensional Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) on a multiprocessor system when the data consist of too many records to fit into memory. Data are spread across parallel disks and processed in sections. We use the Parallel Disk Model for analysis. The simple Dimensional Method performs the 1-dimensional FFTs for each dimension in term. Between each dimension, an out-of-core permutation is used to rearrange the data to contiguous locations. The improved Dimensional Method processes multiple dimensions at a time. We show that determining an optimal sequence and groupings of dimensions is …

Tcp/Ip Implementation Within The Dartmouth Scalable Simulation Framework, Michael G. Khankin Jun 2001

Tcp/Ip Implementation Within The Dartmouth Scalable Simulation Framework, Michael G. Khankin

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

This paper discusses TCP/IP networking, and in particular, the DaSSF implementation of TCP/IP. The paper reviews the protocols, outlines the implementation design, and demonstrates some tests. In addition, some performance and memory usage analysis is performed. We find DaSSF TCP/IP to be a viable option to the existing SSF. DaSSF TCP/IP is faster and uses less memory so we can simulate larger, more complex, models.

Fisheries research reports

A survey of recreational boat-based and shore-based fishing in the Swan-Canning Estuary Basin was conducted between August 1998 and July 1999. During the survey 1,302 interviews were conducted at boat ramps. The majority of these (62%) were not involved in fishing or crabbing activities, with a further 18 per cent fishing in the adjacent ocean. Of the remainder, 139 boats had been crabbing and 154 angling (29 were both crabbing and angling) within the Swan-Canning Estuary Basin. In addition to the interviews at boat ramps, 378 shore-based fishing parties were interviewed.

The survey estimated the total annual boat-based recreational fishing …

The Differential Impact Of Sexism In Latino Men And Women’S Psychiatric Symptoms, Astrid Magalij Reina-Patton

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study assessed the reliability of the Spanish and English versions of the Schedule of Sexist Events General Form (SSE-G). The extent to which Spanish and English-speaking men and women differed in their responses on the SSE-G was investigated, as was the degree to which men and women differed in their report of psychiatric symptoms. Further, the extent to which the SSE-G predicted psychiatric symptomology for Spanish and English-speaking men and women was assessed, as was the extent to which sexism (i.e., gender-specific stress) accounted for additional variance in symptoms, above and beyond that accounted for by acculturation, language, and …
