Asymptotic And Exact Tests In 2 X C Ordered Categorical Contingency Tables With Statxact 2.0 - 4.0, Margaret Posch

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The purpose of this study was to compare the statistical power of a variety of exact tests in the 2 x C ordered categorical contingency table using StatXact software. The Wilcoxon Rank Sum, Expected Nonnal Scores, Savage Scores (or its Log Rank equivalent), and Permutation tests were studied. Results indicated that the procedures were nearly the same in terms of comparative statistical power.

Rangen 2.0 is Fortran 90 module of subroutines used to generate uniform and nonuniform pseudo-random deviates. It includes uni1, an uniform pseudo-random number generator, and non-uniform generators based on unil. The subroutines in Rangen 2.0 were written using Essential Lahey Fortran 90, a proper subset of Fortran 90. It includes both source code for the subroutines and a short description of each subroutine, its purpose, and the arguments including data type and usage.

An Unconditional Exact Test For Small Samples Matched Binary Pairs, Robert A. Malkin May 2002

An Unconditional Exact Test For Small Samples Matched Binary Pairs, Robert A. Malkin

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

When investigators have N pairs of binary data, a common test for an increased rate of response is McNemar's test. However, McNemar's is an approximate, conditional test. An exact, unconditional test exists, but requires restrictive assumptions. Critical values and power tables are presented for an exact, unconditional test free of these assumptions.

Inference For Proportional Mean Residual Life Model In The Presence Of Censoring, Ying Q. Chen, Nicholas P. Jewell May 2002

Inference For Proportional Mean Residual Life Model In The Presence Of Censoring, Ying Q. Chen, Nicholas P. Jewell

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

As a function of time t, mean residual life is defined as remaining life expectancy of a subject given its survival to t. It plays an important role in many research areas to characterise stochastic behavior of survival over time. Similar to the Cox proportional hazard model, the proportional mean residual life model were proposed in statistical literature to study association between the mean residual life and individual subject's explanatory covariates. In this article, we will study this model and develop appropriate inference procedures in presence of censoring. Numerical studies including simulation and real data analysis are presented as well.

Impervious Surfaces And Water Quality: A Review Of Current Literature And Its Implications For Watershed Planning, Elizabeth Brabec May 2002

Impervious Surfaces And Water Quality: A Review Of Current Literature And Its Implications For Watershed Planning, Elizabeth Brabec

Elizabeth Brabec

Impervious surfaces have for many years been recognized as an indicator of the intensity of the urban environment and, with the advent of urban sprawl, they have become a key issue in habitat health. Although a considerable amount of research has been done to define impervious thresholds for water quality degradation, there are a number of flaws in the assumptions and methodologies used. Given refinement of the methodology, accurate and usable parameters for preventative watershed planning can be developed, which include impervious surface thresholds and a balance between pervious and impervious surfaces within a watershed.

Magnetization Reversal Of Elliptical Co/Cu/Co Pseudo-Spin Valve Dots, Scott Whittenburg May 2002

Magnetization Reversal Of Elliptical Co/Cu/Co Pseudo-Spin Valve Dots, Scott Whittenburg

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We present our recent simulated results on Cr (5 nm)/ Cu (5 nm)/ Co (5 nm)/ Cu (3 nm)/ Co (2 nm) pseudo-spin valve dots. The simulated results agree qualitatively with the experimental results. Three different sizes of elliptical dots, 150 nm3105 nm, 175 nm370 nm, and 200 nm360 nm, were simulated. Our simulations show that in these types of dots magnetization reversal occurs by the formation of domain walls: 90° for 175 nm370 nm and 360° for 200 nm360 nm. No domain wall was observed in the reversal of the 150 nm3105 nm dots. For such dots, the simulated …

Effect Of Implanted Metal Impurities On Superconducting Tungsten Films, Betty A. Young, T. Saab, Blas Cabrera, A. J. Miller, P. L. Brink, J. P. Castle May 2002

Effect Of Implanted Metal Impurities On Superconducting Tungsten Films, Betty A. Young, T. Saab, Blas Cabrera, A. J. Miller, P. L. Brink, J. P. Castle

Physics

The superconducting transition temperature of more than 30 thin-film tungsten samples was measured using a dilution refrigerator. The samples were fabricated using a 99.999% pure tungsten target and a dc magnetron sputtering system. Individual films were then doped with metal impurity ions using an accurate ion implantation technique. The effect of the metal–ion doping on the superconducting transition temperature was measured for samples with superconducting transitions in the range of 40–150 mK. Magnetic dopant species including Ni, Co, and Fe resulted in suppressed values of the tungsten Tc. The suppression was linear with increasing dopant concentration, for concentrations …

Deep Hole Traps In N-Gan Films Grown By Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy, A. Y. Polyakov, N. B. Smirnov, A. V. Govorkov, Z-Q. Fang, David C. Look, Richard J. Molnar, A. V. Osinsky May 2002

Deep Hole Traps In N-Gan Films Grown By Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy, A. Y. Polyakov, N. B. Smirnov, A. V. Govorkov, Z-Q. Fang, David C. Look, Richard J. Molnar, A. V. Osinsky

Physics Faculty Publications

Concentrations of deep hole traps were measured in a set of hydride vapor phase epitaxy grown samples with thicknesses varying from 2.6 to 68 μm. Results were obtained from low temperature capacitance–voltage measurements before and after illumination and from deep level transient spectroscopy measurements with optical injection (ODLTS). The former revealed the presence of high densities (∼1015 to 1016 cm−3) of hole traps whose concentration decreased with sample thickness in a manner similar to that found for the dislocation density. Capacitance versus temperature measurements in the dark and after illumination suggested that these traps form a …

Depth-Dependent Investigation Of Defects And Impurity Doping In Gan/Sapphire Using Scanning Electron Microscopy And Cathodoluminescence Spectroscopy, X. L. Sun, S. H. Goss, L. J. Brillson, David C. Look, Richard J. Molnar

Physics Faculty Publications

Cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging and temperature-dependent cathodoluminescence spectroscopy (CLS) have been used to probe the spatial distribution and energies of electronic defects near GaN/Al2O3 interfaces grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE). Cross sectional secondary electron microscopy imaging, CLS, and CL imaging show systematic variations in defect emissions with a wide range of HVPE GaN/sapphire electronic properties. These data, along with electrochemical capacitance–voltage profiling and secondary ion mass spectrometry provide a consistent picture of near-interface doping by O out-diffusion from Al2O3 into GaN over hundreds of nanometers. Low-temperature CL spectra exhibit a new donor level …

Artificial Keys To The Genera Of Living Stalked Crinoids (Echinodermata), Michel Roux, Charles G. Messing, Nadia Améziane

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Two practical, illustrated, dichotomous keys to the 29 genera of living stalked crinoids are provided: one for entire animals and one for stalk ossicles and fragments. These are accompanied by (1) an overview of taxonomically important morphology, and (2) an alphabetical list by family and genus of the ∼95 nominal living species and their distribution by region. This is the first compilation of such data for all living stalked crinoids since Carpenter (1884) recognized 27 species in six genera in his monograph based on the H.M.S. CHALLENGER Expedition collection.

A Measure Of Relative Efficiency For Location Of A Single Sample, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky May 2002

A Measure Of Relative Efficiency For Location Of A Single Sample, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The question of how much to trim or which weighting constant to use are practical considerations in applying robust methods such as trimmed means (L-estimators) and Huber statistics (M-estimators). An index oflocation relative efficiency (LRE), which is a ratio of the narrowness of resulting confidence intervals, was applied to various trimmed means and Huber M-estimators calculated on seven representative data sets from applied education and psychology research. On the basis of LREs, lightly trimmed means were found to be more efficient than heavily trimmed means, but Huber M-estimators systematically produced narrower confidence intervals. The weighting constant of ψ = 1.28 …

Two-Sided Equivalence Testing Of The Difference Between Two Means, R. Clifford Blair, Stephen R. Cole May 2002

Two-Sided Equivalence Testing Of The Difference Between Two Means, R. Clifford Blair, Stephen R. Cole

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Studies designed to examine the equivalence of treatments are increasingly common in social and biomedical research. Herein, we outline the rationale and some nuances underlying equivalence testing of the difference between two means. Specifically, we note the odd relation between tests of hypothesis and confidence intervals in the equivalence setting.

Jmasm3: A Method For Simulating Systems Of Correlated Binary Data, Todd C. Headrick May 2002

Jmasm3: A Method For Simulating Systems Of Correlated Binary Data, Todd C. Headrick

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

An efficient algorithm is derived for generating systems of correlated binary data. The procedure allows for the specification of all pairwise correlations within each system. Intercorrelations between systems can be specified qualitatively. The procedure requires the simultaneous solution of a system of equations for obtaining the threshold probabilities to generate each system of binary data. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate that the procedure generates correlated binary variables that yield correlations in close agreement with the specified population correlations.

Stable Carbon And Nitrogen Isotope Composition Of Aquatic And Terrestrial Plants Of The San Francisco Bay Estuarine System, Je Cloern, Elizabeth A. Canuel, D Harris

VIMS Articles

We report measurements of seasonal variability in the C-N stable isotope ratios of plants collected across the habitat mosaic of San Francisco Bay, its marshes, and its tributary river system. Analyses of 868 plant samples were binned into 10 groups (e.g., terrestrial riparian, freshwater phytoplankton, salt marsh) to determine whether C-N isotopes can be used as biomarkers for tracing the origins of organic matter in this river-marsh-estuary complex. Variability of delta(130)C and delta(15)N was high (similar to5-10parts per thousand) within each plant group, and we identified three modes of variability: (1) between species and their microhabitats, (2) over annual cycles …

Direct Haplotyping Of Kilobase-Size Dna Using Carbon Nanotube Probes, Adam T. Woolley, Chantal Guillemette, Chin Li Cheung, David E. Housman, Charles M. Lieber

Barry Chin Li Cheung Publications

We have implemented a method for multiplexed detection of polymorphic sites and direct determination of haplotypes in 10-kilobasesize DNA fragments using single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) atomic force microscopy (AFM) probes. Labeled oligonucleotides are hybridized specifically to complementary target sequences in template DNA, and the positions of the tagged sequences are detected by direct SWNT tip imaging. We demonstrated this concept by detecting streptavidin and IRD800 labels at two different sequences in M13mp18. Our approach also permits haplotype determination from simple visual inspection of AFM images of individual DNA molecules, which we have done on UGT1A7, a gene under study as …

The Uniform Convergence Of Special Standardized Distributions, Marcia Lami May 2002

The Uniform Convergence Of Special Standardized Distributions, Marcia Lami

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this thesis, the uniform convergence of two special standardized distributions are examined. The Gamma distribution is standardized, and then the probability density function of the standardized Gamma distribution is shown to converge uniformly to the probability density function of the normal distribution. The F-distribution is standardized, and then the probability density function of the standardized F-distribution is shown to converge uniformly to the probability density function of the normal distribution. Along the way, some other interesting limits are observed.

Energetic Particles From Three-Dimensional Magnetic Reconnection Events In The Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment, Michael R. Brown, C. D. Cothran, Matthew J. Landreman , '03, David J. Schlossberg , '01 May 2002

Energetic Particles From Three-Dimensional Magnetic Reconnection Events In The Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment, Michael R. Brown, C. D. Cothran, Matthew J. Landreman , '03, David J. Schlossberg , '01

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Measurements are presented from the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX) [M. R. Brown, Phys. Plasmas 6, 1717 (1999)] showing a population of superthermal, super-Alfvénic ions with Ē≅90 eV and Emax⩾200 eV accelerated by reconnection activity in three-dimensional magnetic structures. These energetic ions are temporally and spatially correlated with three-dimensional magnetic reconnection events (measured with a 3D probe array) and are accelerated along the X-line normal to the local 2D plane of reconnection. In a typical SSX discharge, the peak reconnection electromotive force ℰ=vBL⩽(105 m/s)(0.05 T)(0.1 m)=500 V consistent with our observations. In addition, test particle simulations using magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) data from …

Preferential Orientation Of Short Chain Vapor Deposited Polyaniline Thin Films On Gold, B. Xu, Jaewu Choi, Peter A. Dowben May 2002

Preferential Orientation Of Short Chain Vapor Deposited Polyaniline Thin Films On Gold, B. Xu, Jaewu Choi, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

Vapor deposited short chain polyaniline thin films were studied using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Films grown on two different substrates, oxidized Si surfaces and Au, show distinctly different properties. Some indication of preferential molecular orientation was observed for ultrathin films deposited on Au substrates, but not on the Si substrates with the native oxide surface. Clear indication of metallic character was observed for some of the polyaniline ultrathin films, consistent with recent theory suggesting that alignment of chains parallel with a metal substrate enhance metallicity.

Zero-Bias Anomaly In Cro2 Junctions, Andrei Sokolov, C.-S. Yang, Lu Yuan, Sy_Hwang Liou, Ruihua Cheng, H.-K. Jeong, T. Komesu, B. Xu, C.N. Borca, Peter A. Dowben, Bernard Doudin

Peter Dowben Publications

CrO2thin films, with crystallites of several microns size, provide the opportunity for the investigation of the intergrain tunneling between a few crystals separated by a 1-2 nm thick Cr2O3 film. A pronounced zero-bias anomaly of the conductance is found at low temperatures. Combined photoemission and inverse photoemission temperature-dependent studies confirm the occurrence of Coulomb blockade. For the strong-tunneling case (R2), the magnetoresistance decreases strongly with bias. For the weak-tunneling case (R>>RQ), the magnetoresistance decreases by a factor two with increasing bias, as predicted by a co-tunneling model.

The Lacustrine Carbon Cycle As Illuminated By The Waters And Sediments Of Two Hydrologically Distinct Headwater Lakes In North-Central Minnesota, U.S.A., Walter E. Dean, Antje Schwalb May 2002

The Lacustrine Carbon Cycle As Illuminated By The Waters And Sediments Of Two Hydrologically Distinct Headwater Lakes In North-Central Minnesota, U.S.A., Walter E. Dean, Antje Schwalb

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The accumulation rates of CaCO3 and organic carbon (OC) in lake sediments are delicately balanced between production in the epilimnion and destruction in the hypolimnion. The cycling of these two forms of carbon makes a ‘‘carbon pump’’ that greatly affects the biogeochemical cycles of other elements. To further understand these biogeochemical dynamics, the lakes, streams, and wetlands of the Shingobee River headwater area of north-central Minnesota have been subjected to intensive hydrologic and biogeochemical studies. Williams Lake, situated close to the highest point in the regional flow system, is hydrologically closed, with no surface inlet or outlet, and ground …

Dust Emission From Active Galactic Nuclei, Maia Nenkova, Željko Ivezić, Moshe Elitzur May 2002

Dust Emission From Active Galactic Nuclei, Maia Nenkova, Željko Ivezić, Moshe Elitzur

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Unified schemes of active galactic nuclei require an obscuring dusty torus around the central source, giving rise to a Seyfert 1 line spectrum for pole-on viewing and Seyfert 2 characteristics in edge-on sources. Although the observed IR is in broad agreement with this scheme, the behavior of the 10 μm silicate feature and the width of the far-IR emission peak remained serious problems in all previous modeling efforts. We show that these problems find a natural explanation if the dust is contained in approximately five to 10 clouds along radial rays through the torus. The spectral energy distributions of …
