Reproduction In West Virginia Populations Of The Southern Two-Lined Salamander (Eurycea Cirrigera), Timothy R. Brophy, Thomas K. Pauley

Faculty Publications and Presentations

We describe reproduction in West Virginia populations of the southern two-lined salamander (Eurycea cirrigera) and provide insights into the behavioral ecology of this wide-ranging urodele. The first signs of reproduction are evident well before the arrival of Spring. Sexually mature adults inhabit the cold, rocky streams of southwestern West Virginia in early February. Females arc known by the presence of large oocytes visible through the body wall and males by their extremely swollen heads. Breeding occurs in the stream during late March and is marked by the presence of gravid females with sperm caps in their posterior cloacae. Eggs are …

Hydrographic Conditions Off Northern Chile During The 1996-1998 La Niña And El Niño Events, Jose Luis Blanco, Mary-Elena Carr, Andrew C. Thomas, P. Ted Strub

CCPO Publications

The evolution of oceanographic conditions in the upwelling region off northern Chile (18°-24°S) between 1996 and 1998 (including the 1997-1998 El Niño) is presented using hydrographic measurements acquired on quarterly cruises of the Chilean Fisheries Institute, with sea surface temperature (SST), sea level, and wind speeds from Arica (18.5°S), Iquique (20.5°S), and Antofagasta (23.5°S) and a time series of vertical temperature profiles off Iquique. Spatial patterns of sea surface temperature and salinity from May 1996 to March 1997 followed a normal seasonal progression, though conditions were anomalously cool and fresh. Starting in March 1997, positive anomalies in sea level and …

Embedding Problems And Finite Quotients, Ted Chinburg, Darren B. Glass Jan 2002

Embedding Problems And Finite Quotients, Ted Chinburg, Darren B. Glass

Math Faculty Publications

We give a condition on a family of solutions of quotients of an embedding problem which implies the embedding problem has a solution. This shows, in particular, that to solve an embedding problem associated to the maximal extension of a number field unramified outside a fixed finite set of places, it suffices to find a solution for each finite quotient of the embedding problem. This statement is not true in general over global function fields, but one can prove variants of it in this case in which extra conditions on the embedding problems or on the ramification of solutions are …

Field Relations, Structural Geology, And Geochemistry Of The Jonestown Volcanic Field, Lebanon County, Southeastern Pennsylvania, Tristan J. Ashcroft Jan 2002

Field Relations, Structural Geology, And Geochemistry Of The Jonestown Volcanic Field, Lebanon County, Southeastern Pennsylvania, Tristan J. Ashcroft

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The Jonestown Volcanic Field is a five kilometer by fifteen kilometer area of volcanic and hypabyssal rocks, basalt and diabase, located in southeastern Pennsylvania. These igneous rocks presently occur within an allochthonous belt of Ordovician deep water sedimentary rocks and Taconic flysch rocks known collectively as the Hamburg Klippe. Detailed field mapping during this project has revealed that the contacts between the igneous rocks and the flysch are not conformable. The volcanic rocks are associated with the Ordovician limestone that is adjacent to these volcanics. This limestone also is not conformable to the Hamburg Klippe sediments, rather it shares outcrop …

The Use Of A Synthetic Binary Solid Solution To Model Igneous Textural Evolution, Elizabeth Scott Jan 2002

The Use Of A Synthetic Binary Solid Solution To Model Igneous Textural Evolution, Elizabeth Scott

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Crystallization experiments using a synthetic igneous analog have shown that grain boundary migration can take place in melt-present environments (Means and Park, 1994). In order to evaluate the importance of metamorphic processes during the textural evolution of a crystal mush, microstructural evidence is needed to link them with final igneous textures. In natural magmatic systems, plagioclase may provide a microstructural link; plagioclase solid solution enables the process of chemical zoning and preserves a record of crystal morphology (and chemistry) during growth. If metamorphic processes are common, they should affect the zoning patterns of plagioclase crystals.

Permutational Labeling Of Constant Weight Gray Codes., Inessa Levi Jan 2002

Permutational Labeling Of Constant Weight Gray Codes., Inessa Levi

Faculty Bibliography

We prove that for positive integers n and r satisfying 1 < r < n, with the single exception of n = 4 and r = 2, there exists a constant weight Gray code of r-sets of Xn = {1,2,... ,n} that admits an orthogonal labelling by distinct partitions, with each subsequent partition obtained from the previous one by an application of a permutation of the underlying set. Specifically, an r-set A and a partition •K of Xn are said to be orthogonal if every class of n meets A in exactly one element. We prove that for all n and r as stated, and i = 1,2,..., I J taken modulo [ J, there exists a list Ai, A2,..., A(n\ of the distinct r-sets of Xn with \A\ n Aj+1| = r - 1 and a list of distinct partitions TTI, 7T2,..., irin\ such that TTJ is orthogonal to both Ai and Ai+i, and 7Tj+i = TTiAj for a suitable permutation A* of Xn.

An Additional Source Of Data On Northeastern Illinois Woodlands Around The Time Of Settlement, Jon Mendelson Jan 2002

An Additional Source Of Data On Northeastern Illinois Woodlands Around The Time Of Settlement, Jon Mendelson

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

A new source of data on early postsettlement woodlands, witness trees in woodlot subdivision surveys, is described. Subdivision surveys of Thorn Grove, Will County, Illinois (1848-1856), using 92 witness trees, are compared to the presettlement 1834 Public Land Survey (PLS) including the same area. The woodland described in the subdivision surveys was richer in species, lower in density and composed of smaller trees than the woodland described in the PLS. Decreased density and tree size suggest beginning deforestation, but surveyor bias is a possibility.

Solid Phase Extraction Of Pesticides With Determination By Gas Chromatography, Anwar A. Bhuiyan, Harry O. Brotherton Jan 2002

Solid Phase Extraction Of Pesticides With Determination By Gas Chromatography, Anwar A. Bhuiyan, Harry O. Brotherton

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A simple, rapid, and effective method for the extraction of fifteen organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides based on the use of solid phase Bond Elut C-18 cartridges was studied as an alternative method to those based on extraction with organic solvents. Solid phase extraction is an attractive chromatographic sample preparation technology that reduces analysis time, costs, labor, and solvent consumption relative to traditional liquid/liquid extraction methods. The sample recoveries with the use of solid phase extractions were excellent for most pesticides. Analyte concentration by a factor as great as 1000-fold was achieved readily. The adsorbed pesticides were eluted from the solid …

Land Use Patterns In Relation To Lake Water Quality In The Webber Pond Watershed, Problems In Environmental Science Course (Biology 493), Colby College, Colby Environmental Assessment Team, Colby College Jan 2002

Land Use Patterns In Relation To Lake Water Quality In The Webber Pond Watershed, Problems In Environmental Science Course (Biology 493), Colby College, Colby Environmental Assessment Team, Colby College

Colby College Watershed Study: Webber Pond (2002)

The Webber Pond watershed was chosen as our study site. It is a characteristic New England lake located in Vassalboro, Maine. Webber Pond is a popular site for recreation and is home to a wide range of flora and fauna. Like all other lakes in Maine, it is a young lake. However, intensive human activity in the watershed contributes a substantial amount of nutrients and the lake has algal blooms anually in the summer months.

The purpose of this study was to asses the impact of land use and development on the water quality of Webber Pond. Physical and chemical …

Thermoelectric Properties Of Bi2sr2co2o9 Whiskers Under Hydrostatic Pressure, F Chen, Kevin L. Stokes, Ryozi Funahashi Jan 2002

Thermoelectric Properties Of Bi2sr2co2o9 Whiskers Under Hydrostatic Pressure, F Chen, Kevin L. Stokes, Ryozi Funahashi

Physics Faculty Publications

We report the temperature dependence of thermopower (S) in the ab plane of Bi2Sr2Co2O9 {BC-222} single crystalline whiskers under high pressure up to 1.2 GPa. Special modifications were made to our high-pressure transport measurement system to improve the measurement accuracy of S for whiskers with high resistance. Pressure improved the contact resistance dramatically. We observed a slight decrease of S and four-wire electrical conductivity (sigma) under high pressure. As a result, the power factor (S2sigma) was decreased less than 20% by pressure. From the temperature dependence of sigma, the band gap of BC-222 whiskers increase very slightly …

Synthesis And Magnetic Properties Of Copt–Poly(Methylmethacrylate) Nanostructured Composite Material, Jiye Fang, Kevin L. Stokes, Jibao He, Weillie L. Zhou, Charles J. O'Connor, Daniela Caruntu Jan 2002

Synthesis And Magnetic Properties Of Copt–Poly(Methylmethacrylate) Nanostructured Composite Material, Jiye Fang, Kevin L. Stokes, Jibao He, Weillie L. Zhou, Charles J. O'Connor, Daniela Caruntu

Physics Faculty Publications

We have prepared nanometer-sized CoPt particles dispersed in a poly~methyl methacrylate~PMMA!matrix, as a novel nanostructured magnetic plastic, through a soft chemical processing route. In this work, CoPt nanoparticles were successfully synthesized from a solution phase reduction system in the presence of capping ligands and stabilizing agents at high temperature. The CoPt nanoparticles were annealed at 400 °C for 3 h, and were subsequently re-dispersed inmethylmethacrylate~monomer! . The polymerization was induced by a UV source and the hardness of final product was adjusted by varying the amount of monomeric cross-link agent. Annealed bare CoPt nanoparticles as a ‘‘core’’ material and CoPt–PMMA …

Application Of Plasma Resonance Condition For Prediction Of Large Kerr Effects, A. De, A. Puri Jan 2002

Application Of Plasma Resonance Condition For Prediction Of Large Kerr Effects, A. De, A. Puri

Physics Faculty Publications

Resonance like enhancement of magneto-optic Kerr effects (MOKEs) have been attributed to numerous effects, one of them being plasma resonance of free charge carriers, which is analytically and numerically investigated here. Analytical expressions for frequency dependent enhancement of MOKE are obtained in the general framework of the Drude model, which are then applied to well known expressions describing MOKE. The derived expressions are numerically tested for various optical constants. It is known that for certain materials, the resonance like enhancements in the Kerr spectrum occur in the near vicinity of Re[εxx]=1, which is generally near the …

Cyclotron Frequency Coupled Enhancement Of Kerr Rotation In Low Refractive Index-Dielectric/Magneto-Optic Bilayer Thin-Film Structures, A. De, A. Puri Jan 2002

Cyclotron Frequency Coupled Enhancement Of Kerr Rotation In Low Refractive Index-Dielectric/Magneto-Optic Bilayer Thin-Film Structures, A. De, A. Puri

Physics Faculty Publications

We investigate the enhancement of magneto-optic polar Kerr rotation over a broad range of optical frequencies. The Drude model for the dielectric tensor is considered. Resonance-like peaks in the Kerr rotation and ellipticity caused in the vicinity of a plasma edge is extended throughout the visible spectrum by deriving an expression for the cyclotron frequency such that Re(ϵxx)∼1 at any given incident photon energy and plasma frequency of the material. The Kerr rotation obtained by use of this expression was studied for the case of InSb and further enhancement of Kerr rotation was achieved in the …

Energy Flow And Fluorescence Near A Small Metal Particle, Purna C. Das, Ashok Puri Jan 2002

Energy Flow And Fluorescence Near A Small Metal Particle, Purna C. Das, Ashok Puri

Physics Faculty Publications

We examine the classical energy-balance equation for a fluorescing system consisting of a molecule near a small, spherical metal particle capable of sustaining electromagnetic resonances and irradiated with laser light. From the energy-flow distribution in the entire system, we obtain the enhancement factor for the fluorescence emission of the adsorbed molecule. Numerical results demonstrate that the electromagnetic interactions of the molecule and the surface can be understood in terms of energy flow through the entire system and applied to investigate spectroscopic properties of adsorbates in similar systems. Absorption and emission rates of the adsorbed molecule are determined considering the energy-flow …
