Information-Theoretic Bounds On The Training And Testing Error Of Boosting, Sebastien M. Lahaie
Information-Theoretic Bounds On The Training And Testing Error Of Boosting, Sebastien M. Lahaie
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
Boosting is a means of using weak learners as subroutines to produce a strong learner with markedly better accuracy. Recent results showing the connection between logistic regression and boosting provide the foundation for an information-theoretic analysis of boosting. We describe the analogy between boosting and gambling, which allows us to derive a new upper bound on training error. This upper bound explicitly describes the effect of noisy data on training error. We also use information-theoretic techniques to derive an alternative upper-bound on testing error which is independent of the size of the weak-learner space.
Fluid Dynamics And Energetics In Ideal Gas Mixtures, John D. Ramshaw
Fluid Dynamics And Energetics In Ideal Gas Mixtures, John D. Ramshaw
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The generalization of fluid dynamics from pure to multicomponent fluids (fluid mixtures composed of different components or species) requires the introduction of new concepts, some of which are rather subtle and are less widely appreciated than they deserve to be. The purpose of this paper is to provide a simple didactic introduction to some of these concepts based on a detailed analysis of the equations governing the flow of ideal gas mixtures. The treatment is based entirely on a continuum description and makes no explicit use of the kinetic theory of gases. We include a straightforward and physically transparent derivation …

Scale And Orientation-Invariant Scene Similarity Metrics For Image Queries, James Carswell
Scale And Orientation-Invariant Scene Similarity Metrics For Image Queries, James Carswell
Articles
In this paper we extend our previous work on shape-based queries to support queries on configurations of image objects. Here we consider spatial reasoning, especially directional and metric object relationships. Existing models for spatial reasoning tend to rely on pre-identified cardinal directions and minimal scale variations, assumption that cannot be considered as given in our image applications, where orientations and scale may vary substantially, and are often unknown. Accordingly, we have developed the method of varying baselines to identify similarities in direction and distance relations. Our method allows us to evaluate directional similarities without a priori knowledge of cardinal directions, …

From Computational Science To Internetics: Integration Of Science With Computer Science, Geoffrey C. Fox
Northeast Parallel Architecture Center
We describe how our world dominated by Science and Scientists has been changed revolutionized by technologies moving with Internet time. Computers have always been well-used tools but in the beginning only the science counted and little credit or significance was attached to any computing activities associated with scientific research. Some 20 years ago, this started to change and the area of computational science gathered support with the NSF Supercomputer centers playing a critical role. However this vision has stalled over the last 5 years with information technology increasing in importance. The Holy Grail of computational science-- scalable parallel computing-- is …

Fisheries Research Report No.131 - Pilchard (Sardinops Sagax) Nursery Areas And Recruitment Process Assessment Between Different Regions In Southern Western Australia, Daniel J. Gaughan, Graeme Baudains, Ronald W. Mitchell, Timothy I. Leary
Fisheries research reports
Pilchards have been the primary target of purse seine fisheries along the south and lower west coasts of WA for nearly 15 years. Western Australia’s pilchard population consists of separate west coast and south coast breeding stocks. The adult pilchards in the south coast stock can, in turn, be further divided into three separate assemblages. These adult assemblages correspond to the purse seine fisheries at Albany, Bremer Bay and Esperance. However, while the separateness of the adult assemblages is well established, the status of the juveniles within the context of these adult groups is not understood. For example, the habitats …

We study the interplay between entropy and topological constraints for a polymer chain in which sliding rings (slip links) enforce pair contacts between monomers. These slip links divide a closed ring polymer into a number of subloops which can exchange length among each other. In the ideal chain limit, we find the joint probability density function for the sizes of segments within such a slip-linked polymer chain (paraknot). A particular segment is tight (small in size) or loose (of the order of the overall size of the paraknot) depending on both the number of slip links it incorporates and its …

Physics Faculty Publications
We report the detailed studies of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and thermoelectric power on the charge-density-wave (CDW) material Lu5Rh4Si10 in the vicinity of its transition temperature T0 ∼ 147 K. Pronounced thermal hystereses loops between heating and cooling cycles have been observed in all measured quantities, making this system very unique as compared to other isostructural compounds such as Lu5Ir4Si10. The thermal hysteresis features in Lu5Rh4Si10 are attributed to the presence of metastable states arising from pinning of the CDW phase to impurities. In addition, the measured physical quantities are magnetic field independent up to 8 T, …
Book Review - North American Box Turtles: A Natural History, Neil P. Bernstein
Book Review - North American Box Turtles: A Natural History, Neil P. Bernstein
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
While I have only studied box turtles for four years, from the beginning, I was quickly impressed at the many studies and observations that had been published on North American box turtles. At the same time, I was also frustrated by the lack of syntheses of the material. For the beginning researcher or interested layperson, organizing the studies into a cohesive whole was daunting, and I attempted my own loose compilation that took me most of a summer. However, there is now a new book that provides the background and overview that I sought. C. Kenneth Dodd, a longtime researcher …

Book Review - The Guide To Iowa's State Preserves, Cornelia F. Mutel
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The Iowa State Preserves System gives the highest protection afforded by law to sites "dedicated for maintenance as nearly as possible in [their] natural condition." To date, ninety sites have been dedicated as biological, geological, archaeological, scenic, or historic preserves, declaring that such use is the site's "highest, best, and most important use for the public benefit" (State Preserves Act of 1965). In a state as dramatically altered as Iowa, such remnants are of intense interest to professional and amateur naturalists of all inclinations, as well as to anyone who appreciates nature. Yet understanding the basic qualities of these preserve …
The Classical Limit Of The Quantum Baker's Map, Mark Morgan-Tracy
The Classical Limit Of The Quantum Baker's Map, Mark Morgan-Tracy
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
This work concerns the finding of the semi-classical form of the coherent state representation for the class of quantum baker’s maps defined by Schack and Caves. It begins by introducing the finite-dimensional Hilbert space on which the quantum baker’s map is defined. Its pertinent features including the all important symmetry operators are introduced and given a full explanation. We also introduce the finite-dimensional phase space which will give the semi-classical limit a geometrical interpretation. For a D dimensional Hilbert space, the finite-dimensional phase space is found to be a grid with D2 points. Each point corresponds to a particular pair …

Two major components of climate change, increasing atmospheric [CO2] and increasing temperature, may substantially alter the effects of water availability to plants through effects on the rate of water loss from leaves. We examined the interactive effects of elevated [CO2] and temperature on seasonal patterns of stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E) and instantaneous transpiration efficiency (ITE) in Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) seedlings. Seedlings were grown in sunlit chambers at either ambient CO2 (AC) or ambient + 180 µmol mol-1 CO2 (EC), and at ambient temperature (AT) or ambient + 3.5° …

The molecular weights of two series of PEEK polymers were determined using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The first series contains oxyalkylene linkages. The other series contains oxyethylene linkages. The synthesis of several thermally stable monomers has been investigated. These monomers include 9,9-dihexylfluorene-2,7-dicarboxaldehyde, 2,7-bis(bromomethyl)-9,9- dibutylfluorene and 2,7-bis(hydroxymethyl)-9,9-diethylfluorene. These monomers can be used to form polymers that will contain short conjugated segments separated by nonconjugated segments. The synthesis of 50 g of each of the following monomers was accomplished: bis(3-methylphenyl) phenylphosphine oxide, bis(4-methylphenyl)phenylphosphine oxide, bis(3- carboxyphenyl)phenylphosphine oxide and bis(4-carboxyphenyl)phenylphosphine oxide. These monomers will be used in a polymerization to form polybenzoxazoles. The …
Mitigation Strategies For The Removal Of Rinsate Organics And Lithium-Based Dyes From Textile Effluents, Kathryn W. Huddle
Mitigation Strategies For The Removal Of Rinsate Organics And Lithium-Based Dyes From Textile Effluents, Kathryn W. Huddle
LSU Master's Theses
Governmental agencies have set regulatory values on the concentration of dye-related color that can be released in textile mill effluents. A proprietary biotic and abiotic technology treatment train was built at a candidate facility in northwestern Georgia to reduce the organic content and dye-related color content in the textile mill’s effluent. Laboratory experimentation began with bench scale 4 L immobilized microbe (IMBR) bioreactor tests to biologically treat primary wastewater streams, namely skein dye and space dye, from this candidate facility. The biological treatment reduced the organic content levels, expressed as chemical oxygen demand (COD), from 3185±30 to 290±20 mg/L (COD …

Feeding Habits Of Blacktip Sharks, Carcharhinus Limbatus, And Atlantic Sharpnose Sharks, Rhizoprionodon Terraenovae, In Louisiana Coastal Waters, Kevin Patrick Barry
LSU Master's Theses
Little is known regarding the feeding behavior of many shark species. Even less is known about shark feeding habits in Louisiana coastal waters. The stomach contents of gillnet-captured blacktip sharks (n=356), Carcharhinus limbatus, and Atlantic sharpnose sharks (n=55), Rhizoprionodon terraenovae, were examined in this study. Roughly half of the blacktip stomachs (52%) and sharpnose stomachs (45%) contained prey items. The primary prey item in terms of percent number, occurrence, and weight for blacktips and sharpnose was the gulf menhaden, Brevoortia patronus. Both blacktips and sharpnose appear to mainly be piscivores; however, no members of Sciaenidae, the most common family of …
The Importance Of Zooplankton In The Diets Of Blue Runner (Caranx Crysos) Near Offshore Petroleum Platforms In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Sean Francis Keenan
The Importance Of Zooplankton In The Diets Of Blue Runner (Caranx Crysos) Near Offshore Petroleum Platforms In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Sean Francis Keenan
LSU Master's Theses
Blue runner (Caranx crysos), common around offshore petroleum platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, were found to forage extensively on meso- and macro-zooplankton during the summer months. Larval decapods and stomatopods, hyperiid amphipods, pteropods, and larval and juvenile fishes were common components of their diet. Feeding periodicity results suggest that blue runner around platforms were capable of feeding throughout the night at the same intensity as the day. Size selectivity indicated that larger prey, such as fish were consumed during the night and smaller decapod crustaceans were consumed during the day. Blue runner collected from open waters away from platforms …

Characterization Of The Lower Atoka Formation, Arkoma Basin, Central Arkansas, Kelly R. Lagrange
LSU Master's Theses
The Carboniferous Lower Atoka outcrops in the Arkoma Basin of Central Arkansas contain turbidite deposits in a channelized and unchannelized submarine fan setting. The objectives of the study were to determine depositional characteristics and reservoir performance of these fine-grained submarine fan deposits. Four outcrops (Highway 5, Perryville, Chula, and Danville) were studied and described in detail emphasizing sedimentary facies, vertical succession of beds, sedimentary structures, and other small-scaled features that cannot be resolved in subsurface deposits. Five distinct sedimentary facies were recognized: Facies A - massive sandstones, Facies B - thin-bedded sandstones with a mudstone drape, Facies C - interbedded …

This paper presents data to support the presence of (1) intra-annual signals in the chemical composition (δ18O and Sr/Ca) of the skeletons ofsclerosponges from the Bahamas and (2) variable rates of skeletal accretion. These conclusions are based on data obtained by using a microsampling method for the stable oxygen and carbon isotopes in which material was extracted at a resolution of one sample every 34 μm and a laser microprobe which obtained trace element data every 20 μm (Sr, Mg, and Pb). An age model was established using a combination of changes in the concentration of Pb, the …

Simulation Video Electric Single Particle Aerodynamic Relaxation Time Analyzers, Steve Farmer, Robert A. Sims
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The simulation of physical parameters provides a virtual environment for the design and optimization of instrumentation. applying physical laws and theorems to natural phenomena defines the behavior of analytical processes. Simulation provides means for the adjustment of specific operating parameters while maintaining the repeatability of constant parameters. The video Electric Single Particle Aerodynamic Relaxation Time Analyzer (VESPART) is an instrument that provides the diameter and charge-to-mass (q/m) ratio of particles. The simulation of the VESPART requires the modeling of the physical environment and application of modeling to simulations. Simulation includes characterization of the various natural forces that "feet particle motion …
Sedimentation Rates And Metal Retention In An Urban Louisiana Swamp, Renee Lynn Sanders
Sedimentation Rates And Metal Retention In An Urban Louisiana Swamp, Renee Lynn Sanders
LSU Master's Theses
Naturally vegetated areas converted to urban uses increases impervious surfaces in a watershed with corresponding increases in nutrient, sediment, and metal loadings to downstream ecosystems. Wetlands mitigate detrimental impacts by transforming or retaining pollutants. Current and historic sedimentation and metal retention rates were measured in an urban, depressional wetland in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to evaluate landscape position and watershed development on these processes. Sedimentation disks, feldspar marker horizons, and Cs137 analyses were used in three distinct landscape positions. Inflow channels had the highest elevation and water velocity while the interior was located in the lowest elevations with the longest hydroperiod. …

Predicting Electron Insert Output Factors At Nominal And Extended Source To Surface Distance, Ahmet Bulut
LSU Master's Theses
Two Varian linear accelerators were used to test the modified sector-integration method. This method can predict the electron insert factor for arbitrary inserts at different source to surface distances (SSD). The effective source distances (SSDeff) and insert factors (IF) for several accelerators are compared. The relationship of IF and SSDeff for machine type, energy, cone size, insert size and SSD is presented. The results were fed into the electron output determination module of an existing monitor unit calculator (MUCalc) which uses the modified sector integration method. Prediction and measurements were compared for various clinical inserts at several …

Techniques And Algorithms For Immersive And Interactive Visualization Of Large Datasets, Ashish Sharma
LSU Master's Theses
Advances in computing power have made it possible for scientists to perform atomistic simulations of material systems that range in size, from a few hundred thousand atoms to one billion atoms. An immersive and interactive walkthrough of such datasets is an ideal method for exploring and understanding the complex material processes in these simulations. However rendering such large datasets at interactive frame rates is a major challenge. A scalable visualization platform is developed that is scalable and allows interactive exploration in an immersive, virtual environment. The system uses an octree based data management system that forms the core of the …
Early-Middle Tertiary Deposition In The Corque Syncline, Altiplano Plateau, Bolivia, Brian A. Hampton
Early-Middle Tertiary Deposition In The Corque Syncline, Altiplano Plateau, Bolivia, Brian A. Hampton
LSU Master's Theses
Tertiary age rocks are exposed along north-south trending structures throughout the hinterland Altiplano plateau, central Andes. The east limb of the Corque syncline (SW Bolivia) contains the thickest and most continuous successions of late Eocene–Oligocene age non-marine strata (Potoco Formation) on the Altiplano. The Potoco is up to ~6500 m thick and has continuous exposure >103 km2 making it the thickest and most extensive remnant of the mid-Tertiary Altiplano basin. Basin fill during late Eocene–Oligocene time remains the most rapid and sustained period of deposition since Andean orogenesis, recording a long-term sediment accumulation rate of ~0.5 mm/my. The …
The Radiation-Induced Degradation Of Poly(Diene Sulfones) As X-Ray Resists, Gina Marie Calderon
The Radiation-Induced Degradation Of Poly(Diene Sulfones) As X-Ray Resists, Gina Marie Calderon
LSU Master's Theses
The microlithographic process, essential in the fabrication of silicon chip integrated circuits, uses high-energy radiation to transfer a pattern onto a thin film of polymer resist. Pattern transfer occurs by modifying the properties (solubility or volatility) of the polymer film exposed to radiation. Poly(olefin sulfones) exhibit a high sensitivity to x-rays, which is a desirable property for polymer resists, but typically undergo a glass transition around room temperature and a thermal degradation at moderate temperatures. The thermal properties of the poly(olefin sulfones) reduce the processing latitude for industrial microelectronics applications. Poly(unsaturated olefin sulfones) containing a carbon-carbon double bond in the …

Acoustic Remote-Sensing Of Reef Benthos In Broward County, Florida (Usa), Ryan P. Moyer, Bernhard Riegl, Richard E. Dodge, Brian K. Walker, David S. Gilliam
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
Benthic assemblages of variable density cover three progressively deeper ridges that parallel the Broward County, Florida, coast. An acoustic bottom classification survey using QTCView5 with a 50 kHz transducer showed different acoustic classes on the shallow reef-ridge and the two deeper reef-lines, which both showed the same acoustic signature. Ground-truthing showed that the differences in acoustic signature corresponded to different benthic assemblages: nearshore hardgrounds had low live cover and were dominated by algae covering substrate, the two deeper reef-ridges had the same acoustic signature and similar benthic assemblages (dominated by sponges and gorgonians). The QTCView5 was also able to differentiate …

Preparation And Anisotropic Elastic Property Of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O Whiskers, Khaliq A. Chaudhary, M. Arshad Choudhry
Turkish Journal of Physics
Flexible and superconducting Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O whiskers have been prepared by sintering the melt-quenched glassy powder at 830^oC in oxygen atmosphere. X-ray diffraction and a.c. susceptibility measurements reveal that the whiskers belong to 2212 phase with T_{c} = 79k. The whiskers possess high strength and flexibility along c-axis but were found to be weak and brittle when bent normal to the c-axis. The anisotropic micromechanical elastic property of the whiskers have been demonstrated under a low power optical microscope.
