Solving Fuzzy Linear Programming Problems With Linear Membership Function, Rafail R. Gasimov, Kürşat Yeni̇lmez Jan 2002

Solving Fuzzy Linear Programming Problems With Linear Membership Function, Rafail R. Gasimov, Kürşat Yeni̇lmez

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we concentrate on two kinds of fuzzy linear programming problems: linear programming problems with only fuzzy technological coefficients and linear programming problems in which both the right-hand side and the technological coefficients are fuzzy numbers. We consider here only the case of fuzzy numbers with linear membership functions. The symmetric method of Bellman and Zadeh [2] is used for a defuzzification of these problems. The crisp problems obtained after the defuzzification are non-linear and even non-convex in general. We propose here the ``modified subgradient method'' and use it for solving these problems. We also compare the new …

Effects Of Nonequilibrium Atmospheric Pressure Plasmas On The Heterotrophic Pathways Of Bacteria And On Their Cell Morphology, Mounir Laroussi, J. Paul Richardson, Fred C. Dobbs Jan 2002

Effects Of Nonequilibrium Atmospheric Pressure Plasmas On The Heterotrophic Pathways Of Bacteria And On Their Cell Morphology, Mounir Laroussi, J. Paul Richardson, Fred C. Dobbs

OES Faculty Publications

To date, most research on the interaction of nonequilibrium, atmospheric pressure plasma discharges with bacteria has concentrated on the germicidal effects. Therefore, published results deal mainly with killing efficacy and little attention is given to physical mechanisms and biochemical pathways and their potential alterations when cells of microorganisms are exposed to the plasma. In this letter, an attempt to investigate the effects of plasma exposure on the biochemical pathways of bacteria is presented. In addition, using electron microscopy, we investigate if any gross morphological changes take place when cells are exposed to a lethal dose of plasma. We are testing …

A Comparison Of Various Methods For The Preparation Of Polystyrene And Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Nanocomposites, Dongyan Wang, Jin Zhu, Qiang Yao, Charles A. Wilkie Jan 2002

A Comparison Of Various Methods For The Preparation Of Polystyrene And Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Nanocomposites, Dongyan Wang, Jin Zhu, Qiang Yao, Charles A. Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Polymer−clay nanocomposites of styrene and methyl methacrylate have been prepared by bulk, solution, suspension, and emulsion polymerization as well as by melt blending. Two different organic modifications of montmorillonite have been used:  one contains a styryl monomer on the ammonium ion while the other has no double bond. The organic modification as well as the mode of preparation determines if the material will be exfoliated or intercalated. Exfoliation is more likely to occur if the ammonium ion contains a double bond which can participate in the polymerization reaction, but the mere presence of this double bond is not sufficient to …

Synthesis, Characterization And Thermal Analysis Of Organotin(Iv) Derivatives Of 4-(N-Maleoyl)Butanoate, Khadija Shahid, Saqib Ali, Moazzam H. Bhatti, Muhammad Mazhar, Sohail Mahmood, Sadiqur Rehman

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Organotin(IV) derivatives of the type R_{4 - n}SnL_{n} where R = Me, n-Bu, Ph, L = 4 - (N-maleoyl)butanoate and n = 1 or 2 were synthesized by refluxing R_{3}SnCl and R_{2}SnCl_{2} with (4-(N-maleoyl)butanoate in the presence of triethylamine using dry toluene as solvent. These compounds were characterized by IR, multinuclear NMR and mass spectrometry. We also studied their thermal behavior and calculated the degradation pattern, energy of activation (E_{a}) and order of reaction (n).

An Xps Investigation Of Thermal Degradation And Charring Of Pmma Clay Nanocomposites, Jianxin Du, Jin Zhu, Charles A. Wilkie, Jiangqi Wang Jan 2002

An Xps Investigation Of Thermal Degradation And Charring Of Pmma Clay Nanocomposites, Jianxin Du, Jin Zhu, Charles A. Wilkie, Jiangqi Wang

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Poly(methyl methacrylate)–clay nanocomposites have been studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is clear that as the polymer undergoes thermal degradation, the clay accumulates at the surface and the barrier properties which result from this clay accumulation have been described as the reason for the decreased heat release rate for nanocomposites. The surface composition of the clay changes as the nanocomposite is heated and the changes are affected by the organic-modification that were applied to the clay in order to prepare the nanocomposite.

A Sufficient Condition For The Uniqueness Of Positive Steady State To A Reaction Diffusion System, Joon Hyuk Kang, Yun Oh Jan 2002

A Sufficient Condition For The Uniqueness Of Positive Steady State To A Reaction Diffusion System, Joon Hyuk Kang, Yun Oh

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we concentrate on the uniqueness of the positive solution for the general elliptic system { Δu + u(g1(u) - g 2(v)) = 0 in R+ × Ω, Δν + v(h 1(u) - h2(v)) = 0 u|∂Ω = v| ∂Ω = 0. This system is the general model for the steady state of a competitive interacting system. The techniques used in this paper are upper-lower solutions, maximum principles and spectrum estimates. The arguments also rely on some detailed properties for the solution of logistic equations.

Review Of Soil Conservation Legislation : Carnarvon Horticultural Area, Jean-Pierre Clement Jan 2002

Review Of Soil Conservation Legislation : Carnarvon Horticultural Area, Jean-Pierre Clement

Agriculture reports

Lower Gascoyne Management Strategy The Carnarvon horticultural area has suffered considerable erosion damage following flooding of the Gascoyne River. Factors contributing to the erosion include a move to greater vegetable production, the carrying out of unauthorised earthworks and general confusion about the laws that apply to land management and erosion control. With this context, the purpose of this report is: • to clarify the laws applying to erosion control in the Carnarvon horticultural area; • to identify the public authorities with management responsibility for erosion control; and • to suggest a model by which erosion controls and management responsibilities can …

Plane Wave Diffraction By A Dielectric Loaded Open Parallel Thick Plate Waveguide, Bahatti̇n Türetken, Ali̇ Alkumru Jan 2002

Plane Wave Diffraction By A Dielectric Loaded Open Parallel Thick Plate Waveguide, Bahatti̇n Türetken, Ali̇ Alkumru

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A uniform asymptotic high-frequency solution for a two-dimensional diffraction problem of plane electromagnetic waves by a dielectric loaded open parallel thick plate waveguide is investigated rigorously using the Fourier transform technique in conjunction with the mode matching method. This mixed method of formulation gives rise to scalar modified Wiener-Hopf equations of the second kind for which the solution contains a set of infinitely many constants satisfying an infinite system of linear algebraic equations. A numerical solution of this system is obtained for various values of plate thickness, incidence angle and permittivity, and the effect of these parameters on the diffraction …

Two-Phase Westward Encroachment Of Basin And Range Extension Into The Northern Sierra Nevada, Benjamin E. Surpless, D. F. Stockli, T. A. Dumitru, E. L. Miller Jan 2002

Two-Phase Westward Encroachment Of Basin And Range Extension Into The Northern Sierra Nevada, Benjamin E. Surpless, D. F. Stockli, T. A. Dumitru, E. L. Miller

Geosciences Faculty Research

Structural, geophysical, and thermochronological data from the transition zone between the Sierra Nevada and the Basin and Range province at latitude ~39°N suggest ~100 km westward encroachment of Basin and Range extensional deformation since the middle Miocene. Extension, accommodated primarily by cast dipping normal faults that bound west tilted, range-forming fault blocks, varies in magnitude from150% in the Wassuk and Singatse Ranges to the east. Geological and apatite fission track data from exhumed upper crustal sections in the Wassuk and Singatse Ranges point to rapid footwall cooling related to large magnitude extension starting at ~14-15 Ma. Farther to the west, …

Thermochronological Constraints On The Timing And Magnitude Of Miocene And Pliocene Extension In The Central Wassuk Range, Western Nevada, D. F. Stockli, Benjamin E. Surpless, T. A. Dumitru

Geosciences Faculty Research

Apatite fission track and (U-Th)/He thermochronological data provide new constraints on the timing of faulting and exhumation of the Wassuk Range, western Nevada, where east dipping normal faults have accommodated large-magnitude ENE-WSW oriented extension. Extensional deformation has resulted in the exhumation of structurally coherent fault blocks that expose sections of preextensional mostly granitic upper crust in the Grey Hills and central Wassuk Range. These fault blocks display westward tilts of ∼60° and expose preextensional paleodepths of up to ∼8.5 km, based on the structural reconstruction of tilted preextensional Tertiary andesite flows that unconformably overlie Mesozoic basement rocks. Apatite fission track …

A Power Scheduling Software Package For Planetary Habitats, Gary W. Huband Jan 2002

A Power Scheduling Software Package For Planetary Habitats, Gary W. Huband

Legacy ETDs

Mankind has established a permanent presence in space with the International Space Station. The next step is building habitats on the Moon or Mars. However, these habitats will have to be nearly self-sustaining because replenishment from Earth will be costly. Power for life support and other electrical devices will be limited and must be monitored and allocated. This thesis develops the framework for power scheduling software to perform these tasks.

The software includes a graphical user interface (GUI) to allow the user to interact with the power schedule, a database and server, and a simulation for the effects of device …

On The Spectral Properties Of The Regular Sturm-Liouville Problem With The Lag Argument For Which Its Boundary Conditions Depends On The Spectral Parameter, Mehmet Bayramoğlu, Kevser Özden Köklü, Oya Baykal

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, the asymptotic expression of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Sturm-Liouville equation with the lag argument y''(t) + \lambda^2 y(t) + M(t)y (t - \Delta(t)) = 0 and the spectral parameter in the boundary conditions \lambda y(0) +y'(0) = 0 \lambda^{2}y(\pi) + y'(\pi) = 0 y(t - \Delta(t)) = y(0)\varphi(t - \Delta(t)), t - \Delta(t) < 0 has been founded in a finite interval, where M(t) and \Delta(t) \geq 0 are continuous functions on [0, \pi], \lambda > 0 is a real parameter, \varphi(t) is an initial function which is satisfied with the condition \varphi(0) = 1 and continuous in the initial set.

Precursors For Copper Chemical Vapor Deposition, Muna Bufaroosha Jan 2002

Precursors For Copper Chemical Vapor Deposition, Muna Bufaroosha

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The main objective of this study was to synthesize precursors that are capable of producing copper films of high quality by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). We investigated some copper(I) and copper(II) complexes as precursors for chemical or photochemical vapor deposition. In chapter 2, we synthesized a series of Cu(hfac)2(amine) adducts, where hfac- is hexafluoroacetylacetonate and the amines are: dimethylamine, isopropylamine, allylamine, pyrrolidine, and piperidine. The efficiency of these adducts compared to Cu(hfac)2(H2O) as Cu-CVD precursors was examined under hydrogen. We found that among these amine adducts, Cu(hfac)2(allylamine)2 gave the best …

The Combined Effects Of Salinity And Sulfide On The Growth And Physiology Of The Freshwater Marsh Plant Pancium Hemitomon J.A. Schultes, James Wesley Pahl Jan 2002

The Combined Effects Of Salinity And Sulfide On The Growth And Physiology Of The Freshwater Marsh Plant Pancium Hemitomon J.A. Schultes, James Wesley Pahl

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Vegetative response to saltwater intrusion into coastal freshwater wetlands is governed by the combined effects of increased salinity and porewater sulfide concentrations. I conducted a series of experiments to address the primary hypothesis that growth of Panicum hemitomon is adversely affected by an interaction between salinity and sulfide stresses associated with saltwater intrusion, and the mechanisms for decreased growth are alterations in the metabolic and morphological adaptations needed for a plant to survive in a flooded environment. I exposed marsh sods to a factorial treatment arrangement of three salinities (0, 2, and 4 ppt) and three porewater sulfide concentrations (0, …

Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystal L-Shaped Bent Waveguide And Its Application To Wavelength Multi/Demultiplexer, Yoshihiro Naka, Hiroyoshi Ikuno Jan 2002

Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystal L-Shaped Bent Waveguide And Its Application To Wavelength Multi/Demultiplexer, Yoshihiro Naka, Hiroyoshi Ikuno

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The bent waveguide is a key element for integrated optical signal processing waveguide devices. We propose a new type of two-dimensional photonic crystal L-shaped bent waveguides with additional pillars at the corner. Using the FDTD method based on the principle of multidimensional wave digital filters we simulate its transmission characteristics and show an excellent transmission of light in L-shaped bent waveguide. As an application we design compact size multi/demultiplexer composed of the L-shaped bent waveguides and directional couplers and realize multi/demultiplexer with low-insertion loss and high extinction ratio device whose size is of the order of the wavelength of light.

Biological Reduction Of Perchlorate In Ion Exchange Regenerant Solutions Containing High Salinity And Ammonium Levels, Tina M. Gingras, Jacimaria R. Batista Jan 2002

Biological Reduction Of Perchlorate In Ion Exchange Regenerant Solutions Containing High Salinity And Ammonium Levels, Tina M. Gingras, Jacimaria R. Batista

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

The most promising technologies to remove perchlorate from water are ion exchange and biological reduction. Although successful, ion exchange only separates perchlorate from water; it does not eliminate it from the environment. The waste streams from these systems contain the caustic or saline regenerant solutions used in the process as well as high levels of perchlorate. Biological reduction could be used to treat the regenerant waste solutions from the ion exchange process. A treatment scheme, combining ion exchange and biodegradation, is proposed to completely remove perchlorate from the environment. Perchlorate-laden resins generate brines containing salt concentrations up to 6% or …

End To End Congestion Control In High-Speed Networks, Sarangapani Jagannathan Jan 2002

End To End Congestion Control In High-Speed Networks, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes an adaptive methodology to prevent congestion in packet switched networks such as the Internet, where the internal network nodes convey very little information to the ingress nodes. Two architectures of preventing the congestion are presented: the first one when the traffic arrival rates, and bottleneck queue levels are known and the other when these are unknown. In the latter, the network traffic is estimated online using an adaptive system by measuring the buffer occupancy. In both architectures, the congestion is controlled by adjusting the transmission rates of non real-time and certain real-time sources in response to the …

The Impact Of Using Computer Supported Collaborative Learning Tools On Moral Reasoning In A Multi-Institutional Computer Ethics Module, Joe Griffin, Frances Grodzinsky, Pat Jefferies Jan 2002

The Impact Of Using Computer Supported Collaborative Learning Tools On Moral Reasoning In A Multi-Institutional Computer Ethics Module, Joe Griffin, Frances Grodzinsky, Pat Jefferies

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

Concerns about the increased use and abuse of information technology have evolved into more formalized evaluations of computer ethics in many organizations. This trend extends to most of the universities where they provide different modules related to professional computer ethics. Although these formalized evaluations have become more common, very little is known about the effects of collaborative learning on students’ moral reasoning and how to assess it. This study uses an experiment, involving students in three universities: University of Limerick in Ireland, De Montfort University in England and Sacred Heart University in the USA. The authors will describe the implementation …

Group-Fitted Ab Initio Single- And Multiple-Scattering Exafs Debye-Waller Factors, N. Dimakis, Grant Bunker Jan 2002

Group-Fitted Ab Initio Single- And Multiple-Scattering Exafs Debye-Waller Factors, N. Dimakis, Grant Bunker

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy is one of the few direct probes of the structure of metalloprotein binding that is equally applicable to proteins in crystals, solutions, and membranes. Despite considerable progress in the calculation of the photoelectron scattering aspects of XAFS, calculation of the vibrational aspects has lagged because of the difficulty of the calculations. We report here initial results that express single- and multiple-scattering Debye-Waller factors as polynomial functions of first shell radial distance for metal-peptide complexes, enabling quantitatively accurate full multiple-scattering XAFS data analysis of active sites of unknown structure at arbitrary temperatures without the use …

Correlation Functions Near Modulated And Rough Surfaces, Andreas Hanke, Mehran Kardar Jan 2002

Correlation Functions Near Modulated And Rough Surfaces, Andreas Hanke, Mehran Kardar

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In a system with long-ranged correlations, the behavior of correlation functions is sensitive to the presence of a boundary. We show that surface deformations strongly modify this behavior as compared to a flat surface. The modified near surface correlations can be measured by scattering probes. To determine these correlations, we develop a perturbative calculation in the deformations in height from a flat surface. Detailed results are given for a regularly patterned surface, as well as for a self-affinely rough surface with roughness exponent ζ. By combining this perturbative calculation in height deformations with the field-theoretic renormalization-group approach, we also estimate …

Efficient Parallel Computation On Multiprocessors With Optical Interconnection Networks, Min He Jan 2002

Efficient Parallel Computation On Multiprocessors With Optical Interconnection Networks, Min He

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation studies optical interconnection networks, their architecture, address schemes, and computation and communication capabilities. We focus on a simple but powerful optical interconnection network model - the Linear Array with Reconfigurable pipelined Bus System (LARPBS). We extend the LARPBS model to a simplified higher dimensional LAPRBS and provide a set of basic computation operations. We then study the following two groups of parallel computation problems on both one dimensional LARPBS's as well as multi-dimensional LARPBS's: parallel comparison problems, including sorting, merging, and selection; Boolean matrix multiplication, transitive closure and their applications to connected component problems. We implement an optimal …
