Some Extensions Of Loewner's Theory Of Monotone Operator Functions, Daniel Alpay, Vladimir Bolotnikov, A. Dijksma, J. Rovnyak, A. Dijksma
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Several extensions of Loewner’s theory of monotone operator functions are given. These include a theorem on boundary interpolation for matrix-valued functions in the generalized Nevanlinna class. The theory of monotone operator functions is generalized from scalar- to matrix-valued functions of an operator argument. A notion of -monotonicity is introduced and characterized in terms of classical Nevanlinna functions with removable singularities on a real interval. Corresponding results for Stieltjes functions are presented.

The research focused on the sending of video from a security capture device over a high speed radio network. The first stage of the research involved the design …
Using Simulated Annealing In Geostatistics, Wesley Wells
Using Simulated Annealing In Geostatistics, Wesley Wells
Theses : Honours
Simulation methods are now used extensively for estimation and prediction in mining and petroleum industries and also in environmental management. In this thesis we describe the method of simulated annealing and examine in detail the GSLIB implementation algorithm SASJM. In the context of two case studies involving both sample and exhaustive data sets, we demonstrate this algorithm and then investigate the effect on the outcome of varying the different algorithm parameters. We also consider the effect of varying the weighting given in the simulated annealing objective function to the reproduction of each of the sample histogram and semivariogram. For the …
Invasion Of Indigenous Vegetation In South-Western Australia By Leptospermum Laevigatum (Gaertn.) F. Muell. (Myrtaceae), Anya Lam
Theses : Honours
The current paradigm of biodiversity conservation requires the assessment of alien plant invaders, and their potential negative impacts on indigenous species and communities. Leptospermum laevigatum (Gaertn.) F. Muell. (Victorian tea tree/ Coast tea tree) is indigenous to eastern Australia. It has invaded ecosystems within its natural biogeographic range, within new ranges in Australia and overseas. The species is listed as a high priority weed in the Environmental Weed Strategy for Western Australia. However, the basis for its listing has been casual observation rather than focussed research. This study of L. laevigatum is unique in being the first to …
Cave Breakdown By Vadose Weathering, R. A. L. Osborne
Cave Breakdown By Vadose Weathering, R. A. L. Osborne
International Journal of Speleology
Vadose weathering is a significant mechanism for initiating breakdown in caves. Vadose weathering of ore bodies, mineral veins, palaeokarst deposits, non-carbonate keystones and impure, altered or fractured bedrock, which is intersected by caves, will frequently result in breakdown. Breakdown is an active, ongoing process. Breakdown occurs throughout the vadose zone, and is not restricted to large diameter passages, or to cave ceilings. The surfaces of disarticulated blocks are commonly coated, rather than having fresh broken faces, and blocks continue to disintegrate after separating from the bedrock. Not only gypsum, but also hydromagnesite and aragonite are responsible for crystal wedging. It …
Collapse Dolines And Deflector Faults As Indicators Of Karst Flow Corridors, France Šušteršič
Collapse Dolines And Deflector Faults As Indicators Of Karst Flow Corridors, France Šušteršič
International Journal of Speleology
The paper concerns collapse dolines, which appear to be one of the best-defined surface karst phenomena. Despite this appearance, one may find quite different views in the literature, and some of the aspects of their morphogenesis have been overlooked completely. Among these aspects the most obvious is the question of the ongoing development of the closed depression. Five of the most common collapse doline types found in Slovenia are considered in terms of general systems theory, leading to a conclusion that cave roof collapse remains the crucial event in a collapse doline’s development. However, the collapse event itself may be …
Karst Subsidence In South-Central Apulia, Southern Italy, Marco Delle Rose, Mario Parise
Karst Subsidence In South-Central Apulia, Southern Italy, Marco Delle Rose, Mario Parise
International Journal of Speleology
Subsidence in the karst of Apulia (Southern Italy), one of the classical karst areas of Italy, is described in this paper. The carbonate rocks that make up the geological structure of the Apulia region are affected by subsidence, which is of different type and intensity depending upon geological, topographical, and hydrogeological conditions. In particular, we discriminate between inland subsidence and coastal subsidence. Inland subsidence is generally restricted to the presence of individual cavities, either empty or partly or totally filled with deposits produced by dissolution of soluble rocks underground. Locally, such subsidence can cause severe effects on anthropogenic structures above. …
Federating Heterogeneous Digital Libraries By Metadata Harvesting, Xiaoming Liu
Federating Heterogeneous Digital Libraries By Metadata Harvesting, Xiaoming Liu
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation studies the challenges and issues faced in federating heterogeneous digital libraries (DLs) by metadata harvesting. The objective of federation is to provide high-level services (e.g. transparent search across all DLs) on the collective metadata from different digital libraries. There are two main approaches to federate DLs: distributed searching approach and harvesting approach. As the distributed searching approach replies on executing queries to digital libraries in real time, it has problems with scalability. The difficulty of creating a distributed searching service for a large federation is the motivation behind Open Archives Initiatives Protocols for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). OAI-PMH supports …
A Policy-Based Resource Brokering Environment For Computational Grids, Ahmed Hamdan Al-Theneyan
A Policy-Based Resource Brokering Environment For Computational Grids, Ahmed Hamdan Al-Theneyan
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
With the advances in networking infrastructure in general, and the Internet in particular, we can build grid environments that allow users to utilize a diverse set of distributed and heterogeneous resources. Since the focus of such environments is the efficient usage of the underlying resources, a critical component is the resource brokering environment that mediates the discovery, access and usage of these resources. With the consumer's constraints, provider's rules, distributed heterogeneous resources and the large number of scheduling choices, the resource brokering environment needs to decide where to place the user's jobs and when to start their execution in a …

Video Indexing And Retrieval Techniques Using Novel Approaches To Video Segmentation, Characterization, And Similarity Matching, Waleed Ezzat Farag
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Multimedia applications are rapidly spread at an ever-increasing rate introducing a number of challenging problems at the hands of the research community, The most significant and influential problem, among them, is the effective access to stored data. In spite of the popularity of keyword-based search technique in alphanumeric databases, it is inadequate for use with multimedia data due to their unstructured nature. On the other hand, a number of content-based access techniques have been developed in the context of image indexing and retrieval; meanwhile video retrieval systems start to gain wide attention, This work proposes a number of techniques constituting …

Dartmouth Scholarship
We report the identification of the optical afterglow of GRB 980613 in R- and I-band images obtained between 16 and 48 hr after the gamma-ray burst. Early near-infrared (NIR) H and K' observations are also reported. The afterglow was optically faint (R ≈ 23) at discovery but did not exhibit an unusually rapid decay (power-law decay slope α < 1.8 at 2 σ). The optical/NIR spectral index (βRH < 1.1) was consistent with the optical-to-X-ray spectral index (βRX ≈ 0.6), indicating a maximal reddening of the afterglow of ≈0.45 mag in R. Hence, the dimness of the optical afterglow was mainly due to the fairly flat spectral shape rather than internal reddening …
Site-Specific Modification Of De Novo Designed Coiled-Coil Polypeptides With Inorganic Redox Complexes, Anna Fedorova, Michael Y. Ogawa
Site-Specific Modification Of De Novo Designed Coiled-Coil Polypeptides With Inorganic Redox Complexes, Anna Fedorova, Michael Y. Ogawa
Chemistry Faculty Publications
A stepwise procedure for preparing of site-specific binuclear metallopeptides is described. The modification procedure involves the alkylation of a cysteine side chain by reaction with [Ru(bpy)(2)(phen-ClA)](2+), where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine and phen-ClA = 5-chloroacetaniido-1,10-phenanthroline, followed by the coordination of a ruthenium pentammine complex to a histidine residue located elsewhere along the sequence. The apo and metalated versions of the peptides C10H21(30-mer) and H10C21(30-mer) display circular dichroism spectra having minima at 208 and 222 nm, with theta(222)/theta(208) = 1.04 to indicate that these peptides exist as a-helical coiled-coils in aqueous solution. When the ruthenium polypyridyl complex is attached to C10H21(30-mer), the …

Flux Recovery From Primal Hybrid Finite Element Methods, So-Hsiang Chou, Do Y. Kwak, Kwang Y. Kim
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
A flux recovery technique is introduced and analyzed for the computed solution of the primal hybrid finite element method for second-order elliptic problems. The recovery is carried out over a single element at a time while ensuring the continuity of the flux across the interelement edges and the validity of the discrete conservation law at the element level. Our construction is general enough to cover all degreesof polynomialsand gridsof triangular or quadrilateral type. We illustrate the principle using the Raviart–Thomas spaces, but other well-known related function spaces such as the Brezzi–Douglas–Marini (BDM) or Brezzi–Douglas–Fortin–Marini (BDFM) space can be used as …
Impact Spherules From Western Australia: A Textural Analysis Of Really Old Tiny Rocks, Dawn C.S. Ruth
Impact Spherules From Western Australia: A Textural Analysis Of Really Old Tiny Rocks, Dawn C.S. Ruth
Honors Papers
The fourth shale macroband of the Dales Gorge Member of the Brockman Iron Formation in the Hamersley Basin in Western Australia contains a 2.49 billion years-old impact ejecta layer (Hassler and Simonson,2001). The S4 layer is the least studied Paleoproterozoic impact layer in the Hamersley Basin. It displays textures and replacement minerals not seen in other layers. Analysis of this layer will help our understanding of the processes that form impact ejecta, especially in the Paleoproterozoic.
It is believed that these ejecta settled in a deep basin environment; laterally extensive beds and mud-sized grains are evidence of the deep basin …

Validation Of The Ce-Qual-W2 Version 3 River Basin Hydrodynamic And Water Quality Model, Scott A. Wells
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
CE-QUAL-W2 Version 3, a 2-D (longitudinal-vertical) hydrodynamic and water quality model for river basins combining both river and stratified river-estuary and lakereservoir flow, is a development product of the Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, MS, USA. With the development and release of any revised or reformulated model codes, significant model validation is required. This includes comparison of model results to simple analytical solutions for hydrodynamics and water quality transport, as well as comparison to laboratory and field data. In this paper, the model is compared to numerous analytical solutions for mass transport (1-D advective mass transport) and hydrodynamics (impulsive wind …

In Situ Hydraulic Testing And Water Quality Sampling In The Hyporheic Zone Of The Columbia River, Hanford Reach, Washington, Evan V. Arntzen
Dissertations and Theses
Several chemical and radiological contaminants are present in an unconfined aquifer underlying the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site in southeast Washington State. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], previously used as an anticorrosive in plutonium production reactors on the shoreline of the Columbia River, is of particular concern because of its conservative nature, toxicity to humans and aquatic life, and proximity to protected salmon spawning habitat. Hydrogeologic data are abundant from the unconfined aquifer, but are lacking from the hyporheic zone through which Cr(VI) is transported into the river. A hydrogeologic study was conducted near one known Cr(VI) plume to determine the …

Transparent Fault Tolerance For Web Services Based Architectures, Vijay Dialani, Simon Miles, Luc Moreau, David De Roure, Michael Luck
Vijay Dialani
Service-based architectures enable the development of new classes of Grid and distributed applications. One of the main capabilities provided by such systems is the dynamic and flexible integration of services, according to which services are allowed to be a part of more than one distributed system and simultaneously serve different applications. This increased flexibility in system composition makes it difficult to address classical distributed system issues such as fault-tolerance. While it is relatively easy to make an individual service fault-tolerant, improving fault-tolerance of services collaborating in multiple application scenarios is a challenging task. In this paper, we look at the …

Apatite fission-track (AFT) and structural data outline the Late Cretaceous−Cenozoic history of the southern Tan-Lu fault zone (TLFZ), one of Asia's major faults, the Triassic–Jurassic Dabie orogen, Earth's largest track of ultrahigh-pressure rock exposure, and its foreland, the Yangtze foreland fold-thrust belt. The fission-track analyses utilized the independent (φ-), Z- and ξ-methods for age determination, which yielded within error identical ages. Ages from Triassic–Jurassic syn-orogenic foreland sediments are younger than their depositional age and thus were reset. A group of ages records rapid cooling following shallow emplacement of granitoids of the widespread latest Jurassic−Early Cretaceous “Yanshanian” magmatism. Most ages are …

Deformation Associated With A Continental Normal Fault System, Western Grand Canyon, Arizona, Phillip Resor, David Pollard
Phillip G Resor
In the western Grand Canyon, the Colorado River cuts through a series of moderate offset normal faults that mark the transition between the Colorado Plateau and the Basin and Range tectonic provinces. Both hanging wall and footwall rocks are exposed over > 1,000 m of vertical section, and contain relatively simple pre-existing structures. The area thus presents an opportunity to investigate processes of continental extension without cross-cutting fault patterns and large rotations typical of much of the Basin and Range. We have mapped 8 km of the Froggy Fault, including ~ 600 m of vertical section, and deformed strata of the …

High-Order Interaction Of Solitary Waves On Shallow Water, Prof. Tim Marchant
High-Order Interaction Of Solitary Waves On Shallow Water, Prof. Tim Marchant
Tim Marchant
The interaction of solitary waves on shallow water is examined to fourth order. At first order the interaction is governed by the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, and it is shown that the unidirectional assumption, of right-moving waves only, is incompatible with mass conservation at third order. To resolve this, a mass conserving system of KdV equations, involving both right- and left-moving waves, is derived to third order. A fourth-order interaction term, in which the right- and left-moving waves are coupled, is also derived as this term is crucial in determining the fourth-order change in solitary wave amplitude. The form of …
