Nearly Balanced And Resolvable Block Designs, Brian Henry Reck
Nearly Balanced And Resolvable Block Designs, Brian Henry Reck
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
One of the fundamental principles of experimental design is the separation of heterogeneous experimental units into subsets of more homogeneous units or blocks in order to isolate identifiable, unwanted, but unavoidable, variation in measurements made from the units. Given v treatments to compare, and having available b blocks of k experimental units each, the thoughtful statistician asks, “What is the optimal allocation of the treatments to the units?” This is the basic block design problem. Let nij be the number of times treatment i is used in block j and let N be the v x b matrix N …

Preliminary analysis of the results of atmospheric dispersion modeling for dust emission from the Katowice Steelworks (Poland) showed necessity of verification the particulate matter, lead and cadmium emission from the plant. The verification was limited to the substance emission sources influencing air pollution to the largest extent. Both scale of dust emission and its granulometric and chemical composition were re-evaluated. Further calculations of the air propagation for the pollutants were carried out and calculation results were compared with direct measurements. Thus the Katowice Steelworks impact on air quality and the level of total dust, lead and cadmium ground deposition was …

Films of monolayer protected Au clusters (MPCs) with mixed alkanethiolate and ω-carboxylate alkanethiolate monolayers, linked together in a network polymer by carboxylate-Cu2+-carboxylate bridges, exhibit electronic conductivities (σEL) that vary with both the numbers of methylene segments in the ligands and the bathing medium (N2, liquid or vapor). A chainlength-dependent swelling/contraction of the film's internal structure is shown to account for changes in σEL. The linker chains appear to have sufficient flexibility to collapse and fold with varied degrees of film swelling or dryness. Conductivity is most influenced (exponentially dependent) by the chainlength of the nonlinker (alkanethiolate) ligands, a result consistent …
Improved W Boson Mass Measurement With The Dø Detector, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration
Improved W Boson Mass Measurement With The Dø Detector, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration
Gregory Snow Publications
We have measured the W boson mass using the DØ detector and a data sample of 82 pb-1 from the Fermilab Tevatron collider. This measurement uses W→eν decays, where the electron is close to a boundary of a central electromagnetic calorimeter module. Such “edge” electrons have not been used in any previous DØ analysis, and represent a 14% increase in the W boson sample size. For these electrons, new response and resolution parameters are determined, and revised backgrounds and underlying event energy flow measurements are made. When the current measurement is combined with previous DØ W boson mass …

Electron Correlation In Double Ionization Of Excited Helium By Fast Ion Impact, L. G. Gerchikov, S. A. Sheinerman, Michael Schulz, R. Moshammer, J. Ullrich
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The correlation function between two emitted electrons has been calculated as a function of their momentum difference for double ionization of 1s2s excited He atoms by fast ion impact. A simple quantum mechanical approach is developed to take into account the dynamics of two-electron ejection as well as the effects of electron exchange and correlated electron motion in the final state. A clear difference between the correlation functions of the excited and ground state targets is reported.
Biogeochemistry Of The Middle Rio Grande Bosque: Links Among Surface Water, Groundwater, And Sediments, Susan E. Block
Biogeochemistry Of The Middle Rio Grande Bosque: Links Among Surface Water, Groundwater, And Sediments, Susan E. Block
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The potential for water contamination is great in areas where land use is both urban and agricultural. Such land uses can load the surface water and groundwater with nutrients and toxic trace metals. Water pollution can be further increased when natural watersheds have been altered by human activities. The surface and groundwaters of the Middle Rio Grande, NM, USA are part of one such ecosystem.
Because redox processes are important controls on nutrient cycling and contaminant transport, it is vital to understand the redox zonation of an aquifer. This research has been conducted to address such biogeochemical zonation in the …

Caffeine As A Repellent For Slugs And Snails, Robert G. Hollingsworth, John W. Armstrong, Earl Campbell
Caffeine As A Repellent For Slugs And Snails, Robert G. Hollingsworth, John W. Armstrong, Earl Campbell
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Most commercial products for snail and slug control contain either metaldehyde or methiocarb as the active ingredient, the residues of which are not permitted in food crops in the United States. We have discovered that solutions of caffeine are effective in killing or repelling slugs and snails when applied to foliage or the growing medium of plants. Because caffeine is a natural product and is classified by the US Food and Drug Administration as a GRAS (‘generally recognized as safe’) compound, it has potential as an environmentally acceptable alternative toxicant for the control of slugs and snails on food crops. …

Hydrogen-Induced Embrittlement Of Candidate Target Materials For Applications In Spallation-Neutron-Target Systems: Annual Progress Report (May 2001 – May 2002), Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
The primary objective of this task is to evaluate the effect of hydrogen on environment-assisted cracking of candidate target materials for applications in spallation-neutron-target (SNT) systems such as accelerator production of tritium (APT) and accelerator transmutation of waste (ATW). The materials selected for evaluation and characterization are martensitic stainless steels including Alloy HT-9, Alloy EP 823 and Type 422 stainless steel. The susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of these materials are being evaluated in environments of interest using tensile specimens under constant load and slow-strain-rate (SSR) conditions. Further, the localized corrosion behavior of these alloys …

Highest mean tiller damage (9.3%) and rodent activity (56.0%) occurred …
Methyl Anthranilate Aerosol For Dispersing Birds From The Flight Lines At Homestead Air Reserve Station, Richard M. Engeman, Jeffrey Peterla, Bernice Constantin
Methyl Anthranilate Aerosol For Dispersing Birds From The Flight Lines At Homestead Air Reserve Station, Richard M. Engeman, Jeffrey Peterla, Bernice Constantin
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The failure of traditional hazing methods to provide a lasting dispersal of birds from the flight lines at Homestead Air Reserve Station, Florida led to trials with Rejex-it® TP-40 methyl anthranilate (MA) formulation as an aerosol. A variety of civil, military and other government aircraft use the base, including combat aircraft which are particularly prone to bird air strikes due to low altitude, high speed flights. Migrating swallows and killdeer congregate at the airfield to forage on insects, and the large numbers of birds cause restrictions in airfield operations because of potential strike hazards with aircraft. MA applied by fogger …

Infrared Spectroscopy Of Aniline–Ne Clusters And The Corresponding Cluster Cations In The Nh2-Stretching Vibration Region, Naveed Piracha, T. Nakanaga
Naveed K. Piracha
The vibrational spectra of the NH2-stretching modes of aniline–Ne and aniline–Ne+ have been measured using infrared depletion spectroscopy and REMPI–TOF mass spectrometry. In the NH2-stretching vibration region of the aniline–Ne clusters, two absorption bands at 3422 and 3508cm−1 were observed. The frequency shifts from the monomer was found to be negligibly small. As for the aniline–Ne+ cluster cations, the observed frequencies of the vibrational modes were 3394 and 3488cm−1. These values agreed with ones observed for aniline–Ar+ cluster within the error limit. This fact suggests that the effect of neon to aniline in forming the cluster is not significant in …

On The Minimum Ropelength Of Knots And Links, Jason Cantarella, Robert B. Kusner, John M. Sullivan
Robert Kusner
The ropelength of a knot is the quotient of its length by its thickness, the radius of the largest embedded normal tube around the knot. We prove existence and regularity for ropelength minimizers in any knot or link type; these are C 1,1 curves, but need not be smoother. We improve the lower bound for the ropelength of a nontrivial knot, and establish new ropelength bounds for small knots and links, including some which are sharp.

Development Of A Mechanistic Understanding Of High-Temperature Deformation Of Alloy Ep-823: Aaa Task-10 Quarterly (03/01, 2002 –05/31, 2002) Report, Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
The objective of this task is to evaluate the elevated temperature tensile properties of Alloy EP-823, a leading target material for accelerator-driven waste transmutation applications. The test material will be thermally treated prior to evaluation of its tensile properties at temperatures relevant to the transmutation applications. The deformation characteristics of tensile specimens, upon completion of testing, will be evaluated by surface analytical techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The overall results are expected to provide a mechanistic understanding of high-temperature deformation behavior of Alloy EP-823 as a function of heat treatment.

Gev Electrons From Ultraintense Laser Interaction With Highly Charged Ions, S.X. Hu, Anthony F. Starace
Anthony F. Starace Publications
Ultraintense laser interactions with highly charged ions are investigated using three-dimensional Monte Carlo simulations. Results show that ultraenergetic GeV electrons may be produced for highly charged ions chosen so that their electrons remain bound during the rise time of the laser pulse, and so that the electrons are ionized when the laser is near its maximum amplitude, which satisfies the best injection condition for subsequent laser acceleration.
Face Recognition Using A Similarity-Based Measure In Image Database For Crime Investigation, V. Srisarkun, J. Cooper
Face Recognition Using A Similarity-Based Measure In Image Database For Crime Investigation, V. Srisarkun, J. Cooper
Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)
A method to handle searching a face image database (FID) is proposed to support police officers when searching criminal records from a central registration database system (CRDS). The proposed method assumes that each FID consists of a fixable object and object correlation. The proposed method employs a database search, so that all images with a similarity-based measure are retrieved. Consequently, the proposed method is much faster than sequential searching, especially when an additional set of attributes, like scar, is defined. Moreover it requires less storage space.

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics: Quarterly Progress Report 03/16/02- 06/15/02, Samir Moujaes, Yitung Chen
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
The Lead-Bismuth eutectic (LBE) has been determined from previous experimental studies by the Russians and the European scientific community to be a potential material that can be used as a spallation target and coolant for the AAA proposed application. Properly controlling the oxygen content in LBE can drastically reduce the LBE corrosion to structural steels. However, existing knowledge of material corrosion performance was obtained from point-wise testing with very limited density. Scientists have noticed that the concentration of oxygen dissolved in the liquid alloy could control the corrosion rate of steels exposed to Pb or Pb-Bi. At high oxygen concentration, …

To populate a data warehouse specifically designed for Web data, i.e. web warehouse, it is imperative to harness relevant documents from the Web. In this paper, we describe a query mechanism called coupling query to glean relevant Web data in the context of our web warehousing system called Warehouse of Web Data (WHOWEDA). Coupling query may be used for querying both HTML and XML documents. Some of the important features of our query mechanism are ability to query metadata, content, internal and external (hyperlink) structure of Web documents based on partial knowledge, ability to express constraints on tag attributes and …

Side-scan sonar, submersible observations and sampling of lava flows from the East Pacific Rise, 17_–19_S constrain the character and variability of submarine volcanic eruptions along mid-ocean ridges. Nine separate lava sequences were mapped using relative age and lithological contrasts among recovered samples. Axial lengths activated during eruptive episodes range from _1 to >18 km; individual flow field areas vary from <1 to >19 km2. Estimated erupted volumes range from <1 to >200 _ 106 m3. The largest unit is the chemically uniform Animal Farm lava near 18_370S. The youngest lava is the Aldo-Kihi flow field, 17_240–340S, probably erupted in the early 1990s from a …1>1>
