Antarctic Oversnow Traverse-Based Southern Hemisphere Climate Reconstruction, Paul Andrew Mayewski Jun 2003

Antarctic Oversnow Traverse-Based Southern Hemisphere Climate Reconstruction, Paul Andrew Mayewski

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

On 2 January 2003, the U.S. component of the International Trans Antarctic Scientific Expedition (U.S. ITASE) (Figure 1) arrived at the South Pole after completing more than 5000 km of oversnow traverses that included much of west Antarctica and a portion of east Antarctica (Figure 2). During the traverses, which were performed from 1999 through 2003, U.S. ITASE focused on collecting data that will allow the reconstruction of sub-annual scale climate variability and changes in the chemistry of the atmosphere over the last 200+ years.

ITASE is a multi-disciplinary research program supported by 19 nations and endorsed by the Scientific …

A New Confidence Interval For The Difference Between Two Binomial Proportions Of Paired Data, Xiao-Hua Zhou, Gengsheng Qin Jun 2003

A New Confidence Interval For The Difference Between Two Binomial Proportions Of Paired Data, Xiao-Hua Zhou, Gengsheng Qin

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Motivated by a study on comparing sensitivities and specificities of two diagnostic tests in a paired design when the sample size is small, we first derived an Edgeworth expansion for the studentized difference between two binomial proportions of paired data. The Edgeworth expansion can help us understand why the usual Wald interval for the difference has poor coverage performance in the small sample size. Based on the Edgeworth expansion, we then derived a transformation based confidence interval for the difference. The new interval removes the skewness in the Edgeworth expansion; the new interval is easy to compute, and its coverage …

Orthogonal Macroelement Scaling Vectors And Wavelets In 1-D, Douglas P. Hardin, Bruce Kessler Jun 2003

Orthogonal Macroelement Scaling Vectors And Wavelets In 1-D, Douglas P. Hardin, Bruce Kessler

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We develop a {\em macroelement} based technique for constructing orthogonal univariate multiwavelets. We illustrate the technique with two examples. In the first example we provide a new construction of the symmetric, orthogonal, continuous scaling vector given in \cite{GHM}. In the second example, we construct a continuous orthogonal scaling vector with three components. The components of this scaling vector are symmetric or antisymmetric and provide approximation order 3, (equivalently, the components of $\Psi$ are orthogonal to polynomials of degree 2 or less.) We believe this second example to be new.

Dendrochronology-Based Fire History Of Jeffrey Pine – Mixed Conifer Forests In The Sierra San Pedro Martir, Mexico, Scott L. Stephens, Carl N. Skinner, Samantha J. Gill Jun 2003

Dendrochronology-Based Fire History Of Jeffrey Pine – Mixed Conifer Forests In The Sierra San Pedro Martir, Mexico, Scott L. Stephens, Carl N. Skinner, Samantha J. Gill

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Conifer forests in northwestern Mexico have not experienced systematic fire suppression or logging, making them unique in western North America. Fire regimes of Pinus jeffreyi Grev. & Balf. mixed conifer forests in the Sierra San Pedro Martir, Baja California, Mexico, were determined by identifying 105 fire dates from 1034 fire scars in 105 specimens. Fires were recorded between 1521 and 1980 and median fire return intervals were less than 15 years at all compositing scales. Significant differences in mean fire return intervals were detected from 1700 to 1800, 1800 to 1900, and 1900 to 1997, most often at intermediate spatial …

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Lesni Potok stream drains a forested headwater catchment in the central Czech Republic. It was artificially acidified with hydrochloric acid (HCl) for four hours to assess the role of stream substrate in acid-neutralisation and recovery. The pH was lowered from 4.7 to 3.2. Desorption of Ca and MP and desorption or solution of Al dominated acid-neutralisation; Al mobilisation was more important later. The stream substrate released 4.542 meq Ca, 1, 184 meq Mg, and 2,329 meq Al over a 45 in long and I in wide stream segment, smaller amounts of Be. Cd, Fe, and Mn were released. Adsorption of …

Three-Dimensional Model Of Modern Channel Bend Deposits, M. Bayani Cardenas, Vitaly A. Zlotnik Jun 2003

Three-Dimensional Model Of Modern Channel Bend Deposits, M. Bayani Cardenas, Vitaly A. Zlotnik

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

We present a three-dimensional model of heterogeneous modern channel bend deposits developed through purely structure-imitating interpolation (kriging) of hydraulic properties. This model, augmented with ground-penetrating radar data and directional variograms, agrees with detailed observations in similar modern environments and leads to a process-based interpretation of the presented hydraulic conductivity structure. Integration of all available information permitted delineation and characterization of the modern streambed as a distinct hydrostratigraphic unit without coring or outcrop studies. Our results imply that the modern streambed is commonly oversimplified in available analytical and numerical models of groundwater-surface water interactions where it is assumed to be homogeneous …

Optical Photometry And X-Ray Monitoring Of The "Cool Algol" Bd+05˚706: Determination Of The Physical Properties, Guillermo Torres, Jeff A. Mader, Laurence A. Marschall, Ralph Neuhauser, Alaine S. Duffy

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present new photometric observations in the BVRI bands of the double-lined eclipsing binary BD +05706 conducted over three observing seasons, as well as new X-ray observations obtained with ROSAT covering a full orbital cycle (P = 18.9 days). A detailed light-curve analysis of the optical data shows the system to be semidetached, confirming indications from an earlier analysis by Torres et al. (published in 1998), with the less massive and cooler star filling its Roche lobe. The system is a member of the rare class of cool Algol systems, which are different from the ‘‘ classical ’’ Algol systems …

Stormwater Pollution Prevention Bmp Workshop, Demonstration, And Evaluation, Findlay G. Edwards

Technical Reports

With the recent promulgation of Phase II of the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Stormwater Pollution Control regulations, many construction companies, consulting engineers, architects, and regulating agency personnel are unaware of the new stormwater pollution reduction requirements. In addition, they are typically unaware of Best Management Practices (BMPs) that are available to mitigate stormwater discharge pollution and the proper methods of installing and maintaining BMPs. The Water Quality Goals and Objectives were to train engineers, contractors, architects, and governmental officials on the new Phase II Storm Water NPDES regulations and Best Management Practices available for construction projects. The Original …

Aquifer Characterization And Quantitative Assessment Of Over Exploitation Of The Shallow Aquifer In Ai Maqam Ai Saad Area The Eastern Region, Abu Dhabi Emirate, Ismail Mohammed Hamad Ai 8adi

Accounting Dissertations

Al Maqam-AI Saad area is located to the west of Al Ain city on Al Ain-Abu Dhabi

Highway. This area was chosen to be studied because of the rapid decline of the

water level in the shallow aquifer as a result of continuous heavy withdrawal of the

ground water. In 1990-1991, the area was recognized as one of the major ground

water depressions in the Eastern Region where more than 40 meters of draw down

were noted in the center of depression . The objective of this study is to determine the

hydraulic status of the aquifer by means of …

Validation Of The A Posteriori Error Estimator Based On Polynomial Preserving Recovery For Linear Elements, Zhimin Zhang, Ahmed Naga Jun 2003

Validation Of The A Posteriori Error Estimator Based On Polynomial Preserving Recovery For Linear Elements, Zhimin Zhang, Ahmed Naga

Mathematics Research Reports

In this paper the quality of the error estimator based on the Polynomial Preserving Recovery (PPR) is investigated using the computer-based approach proposed by Babiiska et al. A comparison is made between the error estimator based on the PPR and the one based on the Superconvergence Patch Recovery (SPR). It was found that the PPR is at least as good as the SPR.

Practical Non-Parametric Density Estimation On A Transformation Group For Vision, Erik Learned-Miller, Christophe Chefd’Hotel Jun 2003

Practical Non-Parametric Density Estimation On A Transformation Group For Vision, Erik Learned-Miller, Christophe Chefd’Hotel

Erik G Learned-Miller

It is now common practice in machine vision to define the variability in an object's appearance in a factored manner, as a combination of shape and texture transformations. In this context, we present a simple and practical method for estimating non-parametric probability densities over a group of linear shape deformations. Samples drawn from such a distribution do not lie in a Euclidean space, and standard kernel density estimates may perform poorly. While variable kernel estimators may mitigate this problem to some extent, the geometry of the underlying configuration space ultimately demands a kernel which accommodates its group structure. In this …

A Comprehensive Approach To The Analysis Of Maldi-Tof Proteomics Spectra From Serum Samples., Keith A. Baggerly, Jeffrey S. Morris, Jing Wang, David Gold, Lian-Chun Xiao, Kevin R. Coombes

Jeffrey S. Morris

For our analysis of the data from the First Annual Proteomics Data Mining Conference, we attempted to discriminate between 24 disease spectra (group A) and 17 normal spectra (group B). First, we processed the raw spectra by (i) correcting for additive sinusoidal noise (periodic on the time scale) affecting most spectra, (ii) correcting for the overall baseline level, (iii) normalizing, (iv) recombining fractions, and (v) using variable- width windows for data reduction. Also, we identified a set of polymeric peaks (at multiples of 180.6 Da) that is present in several normal spectra (B1–B8). After data processing, we found the intensities …

Предсказание Термодинамики И Упорядочения В Металлических Сплавах Из Первых Принципов, Николай Заркевич

Nikolai A. Zarkevich

Mobility Of Taxol In Microtubule Bundles, Jennifer Ross, D. Kuchnir Fygenson Jun 2003

Mobility Of Taxol In Microtubule Bundles, Jennifer Ross, D. Kuchnir Fygenson

Jennifer Ross

Mobility of taxol inside microtubules was investigated using fluorescence recovery after photobleaching on flowaligned bundles. Bundles were made of microtubules with either GMPCPP or GTP at the exchangeable site on the tubulin dimer. Recovery times were sensitive to bundle thickness and packing, indicating that taxol molecules are able to move laterally through the bundle. The density of open binding sites along a microtubule was varied by controlling the concentration of taxol in solution for GMPCPP samples. With [63% sites occupied, recovery times were independent of taxol concentration and, therefore, inversely proportional to the microscopic dissociation rate, koff. It was found …

Efficient And Practical Constructions Of Ll/Sc Variables, Prasad Jayanti, Srdjan Petrovic Jun 2003

Efficient And Practical Constructions Of Ll/Sc Variables, Prasad Jayanti, Srdjan Petrovic

Computer Science Technical Reports

Over the past decade, LL/SC have emerged as the most suitable synchronization instructions for the design of lock-free algorithms. However, current architectures do not support these instructions; instead, they support either CAS or RLL/RSC (e.g. POWER4, MIPS, SPARC, IA-64). To bridge this gap, this paper presents two efficient wait-free algorithms for implementing 64-bit LL/SC objects from 64-bit CAS or RLL/RSC objects. Our first algorithm is practical: it has a small, constant time complexity (of 4 for LL and 5 for SC) and a space overhead of only 4 words per process. This algorithm uses unbounded sequence numbers. For theoretical interest, …

Distributed Planning And Control For Modular Robots With Unit-Compressible Modules, Zack Butler, Daniela Rus Jun 2003

Distributed Planning And Control For Modular Robots With Unit-Compressible Modules, Zack Butler, Daniela Rus

Computer Science Technical Reports

Self-reconfigurable robots are versatile systems consisting of large numbers of independent modules. Effective use of these systems requires parallel actuation and planning, both for efficiency and independence from a central controller. This paper presents the PacMan algorithm, a technique for distributed actuation and planning for systems with two- or three-dimensional unit-compressible modules. We give two versions of the algorithm along with correctness analysis. We also analyze the parallel actuation capability of the algorithm, showing that it will not deadlock and will avoid disconnecting the robot. We have implemented PacMan on the Crystal robot, a hardware system developed in our lab, …

A Surface-Based Approach For Classification Of 3d Neuroanatomic Structures, Li Shen, James Ford, Fillia Makedon, Andrew Saykin

Computer Science Technical Reports

We present a new framework for 3D surface object classification that combines a powerful shape description method with suitable pattern classification techniques. Spherical harmonic parameterization and normalization techniques are used to describe a surface shape and derive a dual high dimensional landmark representation. A point distribution model is applied to reduce the dimensionality. Fisher's linear discriminants and support vector machines are used for classification. Several feature selection schemes are proposed for learning better classifiers. After showing the effectiveness of this framework using simulated shape data, we apply it to real hippocampal data in schizophrenia and perform extensive experimental studies by …

Thickness Dependence Of Magnetic Blocking In Granular Thin Films, Scott Whittenburg Jun 2003

Thickness Dependence Of Magnetic Blocking In Granular Thin Films, Scott Whittenburg

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Interparticle interaction among single domain nanosize magnetic particles embedded in nonmagnetic matrix was studied. Attention was paid to concentrated Cu–Co granular thin films with a fixed magnetic volume fraction 20%. By analyzing theoretical models and comparing with experimental results, a dimensional constraint on the magnetic properties was found. As the film thickness reduces toward the thin limit the interparticle interaction plays important roles in modifying the magnetic behavior. The dipolar interaction energy was calculated among magnetic particles including far-neighbor interaction for films with different thickness values. When magnetization variation is included in the calculation, the resulting calculated interaction energy versus …

Suprathermal Electron Isotropy In High-Beta Solar Wind And Its Role In Heat Flux Dropouts, N. U. Crooker, D. E. Larson, S. W. Kahler, S. M. Lamassa, Harlan E. Spence

Physics & Astronomy

[1] Time variations in plasma beta and a parameter which measures isotropy in suprathermal electron pitch angle distributions show a remarkably close correspondence throughout the solar wind. The finding implies that high-beta plasma, with its multiple magnetic holes and sharp field and plasma gradients, is conducive to electron pitch-angle scattering, which reduces heat flux from the Sun without field-line disconnection. Thus the finding impacts our understanding of signatures we use to determine magnetic topology in the heliosphere.

Weighing Matrices And Self-Orthogonal Quaternary Codes, C. Charnes, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

We consider families of linear self-orthogonal and self-dual codes over the ring Z4 which are generated by weighing matrices W (n, k) k ≡ 0 (mod 4), whose entries are interpreted as elements of the ring Z4. We obtain binary formally self-dual codes of minimal Hamming distance 4 by applying the Gray map to the quaternary codes generated by W (n, 4).
