Two-Active Electron Approach To Multi-Electron Systems In Intense Ultrashort Laser Pulses: Application To Li–, G. Lagmago Kamta, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

The interaction of Li with an ultrashort intense laser pulse is investigated by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) in the dipole approximation using a two-active electron approach. We describe the numerical solution of the TDSE and give a more detailed presentation of a technique for obtaining angular distributions for double ionization by intense ultrashort laser pulses. We show how selection rules observed in the angular distributions for double ionization by an intense laser field can be derived from the symmetry properties of the wave function. In an attempt to elucidate the mechanisms for double ionization in the multiphoton …

The Babar Mini, Duncan Brown May 2003

The Babar Mini, Duncan Brown

Physics - All Scholarship

BaBar has recently deployed a new event data format referred to as the Mini. The Mini uses efficient packing and aggressive noise suppression to represent the average reconstructed BaBar event in under 7 KBytes. The Mini packs detector information into simple transient data objects, which are then aggregated into roughly 10 composite persistent objects per event. The Mini currently uses Objectivity persistence, and it is being ported to use Root persistence. The Mini contains enough information to support detailed detector studies, while remaining small and fast enough to be used directly in physics analysis. Mini output is customizable, allowing users …

Discovery, Visualization And Analysis Of Gene Regulatory Sequence Elements In Genomes, Daniel F. Simola May 2003

Discovery, Visualization And Analysis Of Gene Regulatory Sequence Elements In Genomes, Daniel F. Simola

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

The advent of rapid DNA sequencing has produced an explosion in the amount of available sequence information, permitting us to ask many new questions about DNA. There is a pressing need to design algorithms that can provide answers to questions related to the control of gene expression, and thus to the structure, function, and behavior of organisms. Such algorithms must filter through massive amounts of informational noise to identify meaningful conserved regulatory DNA sequence elements. We are approaching these questions with the notion that visualization is a key to exploring data relationships. Understanding the exact nature of these relationships can …

A Progressive Folding Algorithm For Rna Secondary Structure Prediction, Samuel J. Stearns May 2003

A Progressive Folding Algorithm For Rna Secondary Structure Prediction, Samuel J. Stearns

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

RNA secondary structure prediction is an area where computational techniques have shown great promise. Most RNA secondary structure prediction algorithms use dynamic programming to compute a secondary structure with minimum free energy. Energy minimization algorithms are less accurate on larger RNA molecules. One potential reason is that larger RNA molecules do not fold instantaneously. Instead, several studies show that RNA molecules fold progressively during transcription. This process could encourage the molecule to fold into a structure that is not at the global lowest energy level. Additionally, dynamic programming algorithms do not allow for a important type of structure called a …

Aspects Of Financial Dualism In Less Developed Country., Rajalaxmi Mallik Dr. May 2003

Aspects Of Financial Dualism In Less Developed Country., Rajalaxmi Mallik Dr.

Doctoral Theses

One significant aspect of the economic dualism that characterises less developed countries (LDCS) is financial dualism. This is manifested through the co-existence of formal-lenders (FLs) and informal-lenders (ILs), in the credit markets of LDCS, which stands in stark contrast to the integrated, organised and efficiently functioning credit markets of the developed countries. FLs refer to the large institutional lenders, like commercial banks and other government owned banks that are subject to various central bank regulations. The ILs on the other hand are a heterogeneous lot and consist of non-institutional lenders like indigenous bankers, moneylenders, traders, landlords etc., who are outside …

Selective Corrosion In Duplex Stainless Steel, Wen-Ta Tsai, Kuen-Ming Tsai, Chang-Jian Lin, Yan Fu

Journal of Electrochemistry

In duplex stainless steel, the two constituent phases, namely ferritic (α)and austenitic(γ) phases, have different crystal structure and chemical composition. They may thus exhibit different corrosion resistances in aqueous environment. In this investigation, an electrochemical technique with spatial resolution was employed to measure the potential difference between these two constituent phases in 2205 duplex stainless steel. Image analyzing techniques were also used to examine the preferential corrosion between α and γ phases. The experimental results showed that ferrite had a higher potential than austenite in0.01 mol/L NaCl solution. In 2 mol/L H2SO4+x mol/L HCl solution, two distinct peaks appeared in …

Spatially Resolved Spectroscopy Of Coma Cluster Early-Type Galaxies - Iii. The Stellar Population Gradients, D. Mehlert, D. Thomas, R. P. Saglia, R. Bender, G Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

Based on Paper I of this series (Mehlert et al. 2000), we derive central values and logarithmic gradients for the Hβ, Mg and Fe indices of 35 early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster. We find that pure elliptical galaxies have on average slightly higher velocity dispersions, lower Hβ, and higher metallic line-strengths than galaxies with disks (S0). The latter form two families, one comparable to the ellipticals and a second one with significantly higher Hβ, and weaker metallic lines. Our measured logarithmic gradients within the effective radius are ⟨△Mg b⟩ ≈ −0.037, ⟨△⟨Fe⟩⟩ ≈ −0.029, ⟨△Hβ⟩ ≈ +0.017 and ⟨△σ⟩ …

Study Of Scalar Mesons And Related Radiative Decays, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Masayasu Harada

Physics - All Scholarship

After a brief review of the puzzling light scalar meson sector of QCD, a brief summary will be given of a paper concerning radiative decays involving the light scalars. There, a simple vector meson dominance model is constructed in an initial attempt to relate a large number of the radiative decays involving a putative scalar nonet to each other. As an application it is illustrated why a_0(980)-f_0(980) mixing is not expected to greatly alter the f_0/a_0 production ratio for radiative \phi decays.
