Subdifferential And Superdifferential Optimality Conditions In Nonsmooth Minimization, Boris S. Mordukhovich Apr 2003

Subdifferential And Superdifferential Optimality Conditions In Nonsmooth Minimization, Boris S. Mordukhovich

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper concerns first-order necessary optimality conditions for problems of minimizing nonsmooth functions under various constraints in infinite-dimensional spaces. Based on advanced tools of variational analysis and generalized differential calculus, we derive general results of two independent types called subdifferential and superdifferential optimality conditions. The former ones involve basic/limiting subgradients of cost functions, while the latter conditions are expressed via Frechet superdifferentials provided that they are not empty. All the superdifferential and major subdifferential optimality conditions obtained in the paper are new even in finite dimensions. We give applications of general optimality conditions to mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints.

Optimal Surface Temperature Reconstructions Using Terrestrial Borehole Data, M. E. Mann, S. Rutherford, Raymond S. Bradley, M. K. Hughes, F. T. Keimig Apr 2003

Optimal Surface Temperature Reconstructions Using Terrestrial Borehole Data, M. E. Mann, S. Rutherford, Raymond S. Bradley, M. K. Hughes, F. T. Keimig

Raymond S Bradley

We derive an optimal Northern Hemisphere mean surface temperature reconstruction from terrestrial borehole temperature profiles spanning the past five centuries. The pattern of borehole ground surface temperature (GST) reconstructions displays prominent discrepancies with instrumental surface air temperature (SAT) estimates during the 20th century, suggesting the presence of a considerable amount of noise and/or bias in any underlying spatial SAT signal. The vast majority of variance in the borehole dataset is efficiently retained by its two leading eigenvectors. A sizable share of the variance in the first eigenvector appears to be associated with non-SAT related bias in the borehole data. A …

Relaxing The Problem-Size Bound For Out-Of-Core Columnsort, Geeta Chaudhry, Elizabeth A. Hamon, Thomas H. Cormen Apr 2003

Relaxing The Problem-Size Bound For Out-Of-Core Columnsort, Geeta Chaudhry, Elizabeth A. Hamon, Thomas H. Cormen

Computer Science Technical Reports

Previous implementations of out-of-core columnsort limit the problem size to $N \leq \sqrt{(M/P)^3 / 2}$, where $N$ is the number of records to sort, $P$ is the number of processors, and $M$ is the total number of records that the entire system can hold in its memory (so that $M/P$ is the number of records that a single processor can hold in its memory). We implemented two variations to out-of-core columnsort that relax this restriction. Subblock columnsort is based on an algorithmic modification of the underlying columnsort algorithm, and it improves the problem-size bound to $N \leq (M/P)^{5/3} / 4^{2/3}$ …

Stupid Columnsort Tricks, Geeta Chaudhry, Thomas H. Cormen Apr 2003

Stupid Columnsort Tricks, Geeta Chaudhry, Thomas H. Cormen

Computer Science Technical Reports

Leighton's columnsort algorithm sorts on an $r \times s$ mesh, subject to the restrictions that $s$ is a divisor of~$r$ and that $r \geq 2s^2$ (so that the mesh is tall and thin). We show how to mitigate both of these restrictions. One result is that the requirement that $s$ is a divisor of~$r$ is unnecessary; columnsort sorts correctly whether or not $s$ divides~$r$. We present two algorithms that, as long as $s$ is a perfect square, relax the restriction that $r \geq 2s^2$; both reduce the exponent of~$s$ to~$3/2$. One algorithm requires $r \geq 4s^{3/2}$ if $s$ divides~$r$ and …

Parallel Computation Of The Topological Skeleton Of Vector Fields, Thomas Wischgoll, Gerik Scheuermann Apr 2003

Parallel Computation Of The Topological Skeleton Of Vector Fields, Thomas Wischgoll, Gerik Scheuermann

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Vector fields occur in many of the problems in science and engineering. In combustion processes, for instance, vector fields describe the flow of the gas. This process can be enhanced using vector field visualization techniques. Also, wind tunnel experiments can be analyzed. An example is the design of an air wing. The wing can be optimized to create a smoother flow around it.

To analyze such kind of datasets topological methods that clearly show the whole structure of the vector field in one picture are a very good tool. During the last years, many extensions were proposed for this method. …

The Orbit And Pulsation Periods Of The Γ Doradus Variable Hr 6844 (V2502 Ophiuchi), Francis C. Fekel, Gregory W. Henry

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We obtained spectroscopic and photometric observations of the γ Doradus variable HR 6844 (=V2502 Ophiuchi). Radial velocities show that this star is a single-lined binary with a period of 4.4852 days. The primary is an F1 V star, while the secondary is likely an M dwarf. Velocity residuals to a circular orbit have a period of 1.3071 days and an amplitude of ∼3 km s-1. Three periods of light variation were detected, 1.30702, 1.4350, and 0.62286 days. The first period is essentially identical to that found in the radial velocities and has the largest amplitude, a peak-to-peak value of 0.067 …

Spectroscopy Of Early F Stars: Γ Doradus Candidates And Possible Metallic Shell Stars, Francis C. Fekel, Phillip B. Warner, Anthony B. Kaye

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We obtained high-resolution spectroscopic observations of 34 γ Doradus candidates. From the red-wavelength spectra, we determined spectral classes, radial velocities, and projected rotational velocities. The spectra of seven late A or early F stars show metallic lines that have composite profiles consisting of a narrow component near the center of a broad line, indicating that they may be shell stars or binaries. Several stars, including HD 152896, HD 173977, HD 175337, and HD 195068/9, show large line profile asymmetries. Two stars, HD 11443 (=α Trianguli) and HD 149420, are ellipsoidal variables and not γ Doradus stars. The percentage of binary …

Fully Scalable Texture Coding Of Arbitrarily Shaped Video Objects, H. Danyali, Alfred Mertins Apr 2003

Fully Scalable Texture Coding Of Arbitrarily Shaped Video Objects, H. Danyali, Alfred Mertins

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents a fully scalable texture coding algorithm for arbitrarily shaped video object based on the 3D-SPIHT algorithm. The proposed algorithm, called Fully Scalable Object-based 3D-SPIHT (FSOB-3DSPIHT), modifies the 3D-SPIHT algorithm to code video objects with arbitrary shape and adds spatial and temporal scalability features to it. It keeps important features of the original 3D-SPIHT coder such as compression efficiency, full embeddedness, and rate scalability. The full scalability feature of the modified algorithm is achieved through the introduction of multiple resolution dependent lists for the sorting stage of the algorithm. The idea of bitstream transcoding without decoding to obtain …

Low Bit Rate Wideband Wi Speech Coding, C. H. Ritz, I. Burnett, Jason Lukasiak Apr 2003

Low Bit Rate Wideband Wi Speech Coding, C. H. Ritz, I. Burnett, Jason Lukasiak

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper investigates waveform interpolation (WI) applied low bit rate wideband speech coding. An analysis of the evolutionary behaviour of wideband characteristic waveforms (CW) shows that direct application of the classical WI algorithm may not be appropriate for wideband speech. We propose a modification whereby CW quantisation is performed using classical WI decomposition for the low frequency region and noise modelling for the high frequency region. Wideband WI coders incorporating this modification and operating at 4 kbit/s and 6 kbit/s are described. Subjective testing of these coders shows that WI is a promising approach to low bit rate wideband speech …

We prove a multidimensional version of the theorem that every shift of finite type has a power that can be realized as the same power of a tiling system. We also show that the set of entropies of tiling systems equals the set of entropies of shifts of finite type.

Blind Deconvolution Of Dynamical Systems Using A Balanced Parameterized State Space Approach, Ah Chung Tsoi, L. S. Ma Apr 2003

Blind Deconvolution Of Dynamical Systems Using A Balanced Parameterized State Space Approach, Ah Chung Tsoi, L. S. Ma

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

In this paper, the problem of blind deconvolution of dynamical systems is considered using a state space approach. A balanced parameterized canonical form is used as a model for the underlying dynamical system instead of the more common controller or observable canonical form. The results are compared with those obtained using a controller canonical form. It is shown experimentally that using the balanced parameterized canonical form is more robust than the ones using a controller canonical form.

Field Study Of Hydraulic Conductivity In A Heterogeneous Aquifer: Comparison Of Single-Borehole Measurements Using Different Instruments, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, Brian R. Zurbuchen Apr 2003

Field Study Of Hydraulic Conductivity In A Heterogeneous Aquifer: Comparison Of Single-Borehole Measurements Using Different Instruments, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, Brian R. Zurbuchen

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

This field study compares three techniques for estimating the vertical distribution of horizontal hydraulic conductivity Kr in a heterogeneous aquifer and evaluates possible support volume effects. The dipole flow test (DFT), multilevel slug test (MLST), and borehole flowmeter test (BFT) are based on different kinematic flow structures and the shape and the size of the support volumes. The experiment design employed an identical characteristic linear scale for all tests. Vertical profiles of Kr ranging up to 260 m/day from tested wells in an alluvial aquifer exhibit a strong correlation in spite of the differences between test hydraulics. Results …

Increasing Expression Yields Of Circularly-Permuted Myoglobins, Casey Kulla Apr 2003

Increasing Expression Yields Of Circularly-Permuted Myoglobins, Casey Kulla

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

The permuted myoglobin HGL16 is known to be structurally and functionally similar to the wild-type (wt) sperm whale myoglobin (swMb) yet is less stable to chemical denaturation by 5.2 kcal/mole. Given published reports that stabilities of myoglobin mutants are correlated to expression yields and our own confirmation of this correlation, we are eager to increase expression yields of our destabilized permutants to facilitate protein characterization. One method, fusing HGL16 to Maltose-Binding Protein (MBP), increases yields but appears to destabilize the fused HGL16. Another method for increasing yields, overexpressing protein in the form of inclusion bodies, is particularly useful as it …

Rapid Multiplexed Data Acquisition: Application To Three-Dimensional Magnetic Field Measurements In A Turbulent Laboratory Plasma, Matthew Joseph Landreman , '03, C. D. Cothran, Michael R. Brown, M. Kostora, J. T. Slough

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Multiplexing electronics have been constructed to reduce the cost of high-speed data acquisition at the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX) and Redmond Plasma Physics Laboratory. An application of the system is described for a three-dimensional magnetic probe array designed to resolve magnetohydrodynamic time scale and ion inertial spatial scale structure of magnetic reconnection in a laboratory plasma at SSX. Multiplexing at 10 MHz compresses 600 pick-up coil signals in the magnetic probe array into 75 digitizer channels. An external master timing system maintains synchronization of the multiplexers and digitizers. The complete system, calibrated and tested with Helmholtz, line current, and magnetofluid …
