Teachers' Resource For Materials And Environmental Chemistry, Carnetta Skipworth Apr 2003

Teachers' Resource For Materials And Environmental Chemistry, Carnetta Skipworth

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In many secondary education chemistry classrooms, teachers have a difficult time introducing chemistry topics in a way that will be interesting to the high school student. The development of a materials and environmental chemistry teacher's manual will help teachers introduce a variety of selected topics in an interesting fashion to the students. This manual focuses on the subjects covered for freshman and sophomore level students. The manual uses five separate experiments to introduce topics such as the electromagnetic spectrum and solubility. The five experiments include a test on tennis shoe stiffness and energy dissipation ability, pesticides in water, grease in …

A New Class Of Entropy Estimators For Multi-Dimensional Densities, Erik G. Learned-Miller Mar 2003

A New Class Of Entropy Estimators For Multi-Dimensional Densities, Erik G. Learned-Miller

Erik G Learned-Miller

We present a new class of estimators for approximating the entropy of multi-dimensional probability densities based on a sample of the density. These estimators extend the classic "m-spacing" estimators of Vasicek (1976) and others for estimating entropies of one-dimensional probability densities. Unlike plug-in estimators of entropy, which first estimate a probability density and then compute its entropy. our estimators avoid the difficult intermediate step of density estimation. For fixed dimension. the estimators an polynomial in the sample size. Similarities to consistent and asymptotically efficient one-dimensional estimators of entropy suggest that our estimators may sham these properties.

Microlensing Of Circumstellar Envelopes Ii. Emission Lines From Radial And Azimuthal Flow During Fold Caustic Crossings., H. M. Bryce, R. Ignace, M. A. Hendry

Richard Ignace

This paper examines the line profile evolution due to bulk motion in circumstellar envelopes during microlensing fold caustic crossing events. These events have recently been shown to be a sensitive probe of stellar surface brightness profiles, thus providing a means - through both photometric and spectroscopic observations - to constrain and test stellar atmosphere models. Here it is demonstrated, through the examination of simplified line profiles, that spectroscopic studies of fold caustic crossings could also prove to be a powerful diagnostic of bulk motion in circumstellar envelopes.

Water-Soluble Organic Components In Aerosols Associated With Savanna Fires In Southern Africa: Identification, Evolution, And Distribution, Song Gao, Dean A. Hegg, Peter V. Hobbs, Thomas W. Kirchstetter, Brian I. Magi, Martin Sadilek

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles

During the SAFARI 2000 field campaign, both smoke aerosols from savanna fires and haze aerosols in the boundary layer and in the free troposphere were collected from an aircraft in southern Africa. These aerosol samples were analyzed for their water-soluble chemical components, particularly the organic species. A novel technique, electrospray ionization-ion trap mass spectrometry, was used concurrently with an ion chromatography system to analyze for carbohydrate species. Seven carbohydrates, seven organic acids, five metallic elements, and three inorganic anions were identified and quantified. On the average, these 22 species comprised 36% and 27% of the total aerosol mass in haze …

Sarcocystis neurona, Neospora caninum, N. hughesi, and Toxoplasma gondii are 4 related coccidians considered to be associated with encephalomyelitis in horses. The source of infection for N. hughesi is unknown, whereas opossums, dogs, and cats are the definitive hosts for S. neurona, N. caninum, and T. gondii, respectively. Seroprevalence of these coccidians in 276 wild horses from central Wyoming outside the known range of the opossum (Didelphis virginiana) was determined. Antibodies to T. gondii were found only in 1 of 276 horses tested with the modified agglutination test using 1: 25, 1:50, …

The Influence Of Lithophysal Porosity On The In-Situ Stress-Strain Properties Of Topopah Spring Tuff, Bahri B. Avar, Moses Karakouzian, Amy J. Smiecinski

Publications (YM)

Numerical analysis and a laboratory testing program were conducted in order to investigate the effect of lithophysal porosity on the elastic stress-strain properties of the lithophysae-rich tuff specimens and to find the locations of cavities in both analog and tuff specimens. In the first part of the study, a finite difference mesh containing circular holes was modeled for varying porosity ranges between 5 and 40% using commercially available software FLAG20' version 3.5. Elastic (Young's) modulus and Poisson's ratio were calculated for each setup and normalized with respect to matrix elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio. The moduli calculated through numerical analysis …

US ITASE is effectively a polar research vessel. It offers the ground-based opportunities of traditional style traverse travel coupled with the modern technology of GPS, crevasse detecting radar, satellite communications and multi-disciplinary research. By operating as a ground-based transport system US ITASE offers scientists the opportunity to experience the dynamic environment they are studying. US ITASE also offers an important interactive venue for research (currently eleven integrated science projects) similar to that afforded by oceanographic research vessels and large polar field camps, without the cost of the former or the lack of mobility of the latter. More importantly the combination …

Influence Of A Cyclonic Eddy On Microheterotroph Biomass And Carbon Export In The Lee Of Hawaii, Robert R. Bidigare, Claudia R. Benitez-Nelson, Carrie L. Leonard, Paul D. Quay, Michael L. Parsons, David G. Foley, Michael P. Seki Mar 2003

Influence Of A Cyclonic Eddy On Microheterotroph Biomass And Carbon Export In The Lee Of Hawaii, Robert R. Bidigare, Claudia R. Benitez-Nelson, Carrie L. Leonard, Paul D. Quay, Michael L. Parsons, David G. Foley, Michael P. Seki

Faculty Publications

[1] A multi‐platform sampling strategy was used to investigate carbon cycling in a cold‐core eddy that formed in the lee of Hawaii during September 2000. Microheterotroph biomass and 234Th‐derived carbon export rates within the eddy were 2 to 3 times higher than those observed for adjacent waters. If this eddy is representative of other cyclonic eddies that are frequently formed in the lee of Hawaii, then eddy activity may significantly enhance the areal efficiency of the biological pump and facilitate the transfer of organic carbon to organisms inhabiting the mesopelagic and abyssal‐benthic zones of this subtropical ecosystem.

Developing Into Series And Returning From Series: A Note On The Foundations Of Eighteenth-Century Analysis, Giovanni Ferraro, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

In this paper we investigate two problems concerning the theory of power series in 18th-century mathematics: the development of a given function into a power series and the inverse problem, the return from a given power series to the function of which this power series is the development. The way of conceiving and solving these problems closely depended on the notion of function and in particular on the conception of a series as the result of a formal transformation of a function. After describing the procedures considered acceptable by 18th-century mathematicians, we examine in detail the different strategies—both direct and …

Small Angle Neutron Scattering From D2o–H2o Nanodroplets And Binary Nucleation Rates In A Supersonic Nozzle, Christopher H. Heath, Kiril A. Streletzky, Barbara E. Wyslouzil, Judith Woelk, Reinhard Strey Mar 2003

Small Angle Neutron Scattering From D2o–H2o Nanodroplets And Binary Nucleation Rates In A Supersonic Nozzle, Christopher H. Heath, Kiril A. Streletzky, Barbara E. Wyslouzil, Judith Woelk, Reinhard Strey

Physics Faculty Publications

Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments were used to characterize binary nanodroplets composed of D2O and H2O. The droplets were formed by expanding dilute mixtures of condensible vapor in a N2 carrier gas through a supersonic nozzle, while maintaining the onset of condensation at a fixed position in the nozzle. It is remarkable, given the small coherent scattering length density of light water, that even the pure H2O aerosol gave a scattering signal above background. The scattering spectra were analyzed assuming a log-normal distribution of droplets. On average, the geometric radius of the nanodroplets rg was rg=13 (±1) nm, the …

[1] Airborne measurements made on initial smoke from 10 savanna fires in southern Africa provide quantitative data on emissions of 50 gaseous and particulate species, including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, methane, ammonia, dimethyl sulfide, nonmethane organic compounds, halocarbons, gaseous organic acids, aerosol ionic components, carbonaceous aerosols, and condensation nuclei (CN). Measurements of several of the gaseous species by gas chromatography and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy are compared. Emission ratios and emission factors are given for eight species that have not been reported previously for biomass burning of savanna in southern Africa (namely, dimethyl sulfide, methyl nitrate, …

Proteins Of Oxygen-Binding And Energy Metabolism In Muscles Of Antarctic Fishes: Evolutionary Adjustments To Life At Cold Temperature, Bruce Sidell, Michael E. Vayda Mar 2003

Proteins Of Oxygen-Binding And Energy Metabolism In Muscles Of Antarctic Fishes: Evolutionary Adjustments To Life At Cold Temperature, Bruce Sidell, Michael E. Vayda

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

The suborder Notothenoidei is the dominant fish group of the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica, both in terms of number of species and biomass. For about fourteen million years, these highly successful fish evolved under stable thermal conditions that result in body temperatures of about zero degrees centigrade throughout their life histories. Evolution this cold environment has led to unusual physiological and biochemical characteristics. In some cases, the characteristics contribute to overcoming constraints of cold temperature on biological processes. In other instances, mutations that probably would have been lethal in warmer, less oxygen-rich environments than the Southern Ocean have been retained …

Estimating The Accuracy Of Polymerase Chain Reaction-Based Tests Using Endpoint Dilution, Jim Hughes, Patricia Totten Mar 2003

Estimating The Accuracy Of Polymerase Chain Reaction-Based Tests Using Endpoint Dilution, Jim Hughes, Patricia Totten

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

PCR-based tests for various microorganisms or target DNA sequences are generally acknowledged to be highly "sensitive" yet the concept of sensitivity is ill-defined in the literature on these tests. We propose that sensitivity should be expressed as a function of the number of target DNA molecules in the sample (or specificity when the target number is 0). However, estimating this "sensitivity curve" is problematic since it is difficult to construct samples with a fixed number of targets. Nonetheless, using serially diluted replicate aliquots of a known concentration of the target DNA sequence, we show that it is possible to disentangle …

High-Resolution Chandra Spectroscopy Of Tau Scorpii: A Narrow-Line X-Ray Spectrum From A Hot Star, David H. Cohen, Genevieve Escande De Messières , '04, J. J. Macfarlane, N. A. Miller, J. P. Cassinelli, S. P. Owocki, D. A. Liedahl

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Long known to be an unusual early-type star by virtue of its hard and strong X-ray emission, tau Scorpii poses a severe challenge to the standard picture of O-star wind-shock X-ray emission. The Chandra HETGS spectrum now provides significant direct evidence that this B0.2 star does not fit this standard wind-shock framework. The many emission lines detected with the Chandra gratings are significantly narrower than what would be expected from a star with the known wind properties of tau Sco, although they are broader than the corresponding lines seen in late-type coronal sources. While line ratios are consistent with the …

The Adsorption Of Orthocarborane On Cobalt, L. Bernard, A. N. Caruso, Bo Xu, Bernard Doudin, Peter A. Dowben Mar 2003

The Adsorption Of Orthocarborane On Cobalt, L. Bernard, A. N. Caruso, Bo Xu, Bernard Doudin, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

The adsorption of closo-1,2 dicarbadodecaborane (orthocarborane) on evaporated cobalt thin films has been investigated by combined photoemission and inverse photoemission studies. The adsorption of these icosahedral molecules does not strongly perturb the electronic structure of the underlying cobalt. As was previously observed with adsorption on Cu(100), electron induced decomposition of adsorbed orthocarborane decreases the HOMO–LUMO gap. The X-ray photoemission spectra before and after orthocarborane adsorption confirm that the interface with cobalt is abrupt. These results suggest that chemical vapor deposition, via the decomposition of orthocarborane, may be an effective method for fabricating dielectric barrier layers, without utilizing oxides. This …

Dynamic Networks For Motion Planning In Multi-Robot Space Systems, Christopher M. Clark, Stephen M. Rock, Jean-Claude Latombe Mar 2003

Dynamic Networks For Motion Planning In Multi-Robot Space Systems, Christopher M. Clark, Stephen M. Rock, Jean-Claude Latombe

Computer Science and Software Engineering

A new motion planning framework is presented that enables multiple mobile robots with limited ranges of sensing and communication to maneuver and achieve goals safely in dynamic environments. The framework is applicable to both planetary rover and free-floating space robot applications. To combine the respective advantages of centralized and de-centralized planning, this framework is based on the concept of centralized planning within dynamic robot networks. As the robots move in their environment, localized robot groups form networks, within which world models and robot goals can be shared. Whenever a network is formed, new information becomes available to all robots in …

Engineering The Ocean, Marcia Mcnutt

IMSA Great Minds Program ®

Developments in microprocessors, artificial intelligence, and new forms of power and communications for autonomous systems are already bringing about a revolution in our ability to explore, experiment within, and ultimately understand Earth's last frontier: the ocean. It is inevitable, with this growing capability, that there will be pressure to use the same and similar technology to manipulate and enhance the ocean environment, just as we have our terrestrial environment. We will be able to fertilize the ocean to increase its productivity, adjust its climate in an attempt to halt natural and human-induced global change, harvest its internal energy to power …

Design Of The Hiv Prevention Trials Network (Hptn) Protocol 054: A Cluster Randomized Crossover Trial To Evaluate Combined Access To Nevirapine In Developing Countries, Jim Hughes, Robert L. Goldenberg, Catherine M. Wilfert, Megan Valentine, Kasonde G. Mwinga, Laura A. Guay, Francis Mmiro, Jeffrey S. A. Stringer

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

HPTN054 is a cluster randomized trial designed to compare two approaches to providing single dose nevirapine to HIV-seropositive mothers and their infants to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV in resource limited settings. A number of challenging issues arose during the design of this trial. Most importantly, the need to achieve high participation rates among pregnant, HIV-seropositive women in selected prenatal care clinics led us to develop a method of collecting anonymous and unlinked information on a key surrogate endpoint instead of pursuing linked and identified information on a clinical endpoint. In addition, since group counseling is the standard model for …

Common Raven Nests In Eastern Kentucky, John J. Cox, Nathan W. Seward, Jeffrey L. Larkin, David S. Maehr

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Although ravens were once widespread throughout Appalachia they are now considered threatened or endangered in many states of the region. We document a nesting pair of common ravens in an area of southeastern Kentucky nearly 50 km northwest of traditional nesting sites. Further, we suggest several factors that may have influenced the patterns of raven abundance in the state and offer management recommendations to assist their recovery.

Sandwich Theorem And Calculation Of The Theta Function For Several Graphs, Marcia Ling Riddle Mar 2003

Sandwich Theorem And Calculation Of The Theta Function For Several Graphs, Marcia Ling Riddle

Theses and Dissertations

This paper includes some basic ideas about the computation of a function theta(G), the theta number of a graph G, which is known as the Lovasz number of G. theta(G^c) lies between two hard-to-compute graph numbers omega(G), the size of the largest lique in a graph G, and chi(G), the minimum number of colors need to properly color the vertices of G. Lovasz and Grotschel called this the "Sandwich Theorem". Donald E. Knuth gives four additional definitions of theta, theta_1, theta_2, theta_3, theta_4 and proves that they are all equal.

First I am going to describe the proof of the …

Inverse Multiplexing In Short-Range Multi-Transport Wireless Communications, Lichen Dai, Heidi R. Duffin, James C. Funk, Charles D. Knutson Mar 2003

Inverse Multiplexing In Short-Range Multi-Transport Wireless Communications, Lichen Dai, Heidi R. Duffin, James C. Funk, Charles D. Knutson

Faculty Publications

This paper describes a mechanism for utilizing Inverse Multiplexing to significantly increase the bandwidth available to short-range wireless devices. Previous work with Inverse Multiplexing has focused on wired networks; its implementation with short-range wireless transports introduces heterogeneity in the links, which must be taken into account. A mathematical model for an Inverse Multiplexing system is derived for several scheduling algorithms. Both Process Limited and Transport Limited systems are examined. The validity of this model is shown by our implementation of an Inverse Multiplexing layer that uses IrDA and Bluetooth transports. Concepts related to Inverse Multiplexing such as usage models, negotiation, …
